Went to this location on Jan 8th, 2025. Weird way to start a review but that date is important. Because I'm not sure there ever will be a harder service day. At the very least 60% of the restaurants in the Conejo Valley were closed. And 70% of the residents lacked power - couldn't make their dinner. Every table was occupied and almost every seat at the community table was taken. And the line for take out was 3 people deep, approx 15 people. As tough an environment to serve as that was, that team put out great food with such incredible professionalism and attention to detail. Those people were locked in. No evidence of exhaustion even though they'd been at it for hours. It reminded me of that episode of the Bear where Richie works at that high end restaurant. Just dedicated people intent on doing a great job. We were Urban Plates fans from the beginning. Now we're fans for all time. This restaurant deserves a special recommendation for the quality, freshness, and variety of its healthy food selections. Last night we had the grilled salmon, carrots, beets, and asparagus. After attending a concert at California Lutheran University last week, Dear Hubby and I suggested to our group of friends who'd been to the event to try Urban Plates. Some hadn't had a chance to have dinner before the show, so they could pick a savory option. Some just wanted something sweet. Like me - I was ready for a mug of herbal tea and a dessert. I chose their flourless chocolate cake. Others had a chocolate chip cookie. Upon entering, we noticed that the restaurant has changed the traffic flow. It used to be that you'd turn right and proceed to walk the gauntlet of food prep stations. Salads / soups / sandwiches came first, then hot main dishes or sides, and then finally, desserts and beverages. Now you proceed straight back to the ordering counter where the menu board hangs overhead. From there, you order and pay, collect a table number on a stand, and select whichever open table you prefer. Runners bring out your food and beverage selections as they become available. A side service stand offers utensils, water, napkins, and other necessities. The large, open indoor space, with high ceilings and interesting naturalistic décor provides a welcoming atmosphere. Whether you are flying solo, or with a friend or a date, or even a family group, you can feel welcome here. In nicer weather, the generously sized outdoor patio offers a fresh air option. The flourless chocolate cake was extremely rich and creamy, with a fudgy taste. It was on the border of being too sweet, but paired with hot tea and water, and savoring the bites, I enjoyed it slowly. Next time I'll try something different. The oversized chocolate chip cookies looked yummy, too. Eating out is getting expensive everywhere, but their portions provides a decent value for the ticket price. All the staff was doing their side-work and all the cocineros (chefs) were all having a great ole time, laughing, telling jokes and cooking like their very life depended on it...This is my kind of restaurant. However, we came in on a Monday evening (July 7th to be exact) and we were the only patrons in the entire restaurant!! Inquiring minds want to know, why is that? Why so slow? Wanted Thanksgiving turkey dinner but not at $26 apiece would've been a $70 plus dinner. Opted for brace beef mushroom bowl but they ran out of mushrooms. So we settled for chicken dinners mashed for me, small brown potatoes for the wife both with steamed broccoli. Everything lukewarm barely, broccoli way overcooked, gravy for mashed potatoes was half full small container, asked for another said they charge for it. Paid for another half full container for $1.10. Could not believe barely 2 tablespoons of gravy for that. Not super steady customers put enough to know the menu and everything we like, first time we had this experience thought it was pretty ridiculous. read more

Our server was also the person who rang me up and she was above and beyond - I had the Beets + Avocado Bowl... an organic based quinoa blend w/ roasted beets, avocado, raw walnuts, pickled red onions, hemp seeds, shaved cabbage, and miso-lemongrass dressing.... Like wow! While the Chili Glazed Tofu Bowl also caught my eye among other meals that also happen to be apart of the $13 Everyday Value selection (which also features salads, burgers, sandwiches and various bowls). Aside from savory lunch and/or dinner... You can also partake in desserts.... Additionally they offer so many sides in plenty of sizes - like family style (good for sharing more).
