I chose the three course Easter brunch special and I would give it a 4.5 out of 5 stars. -Beet Lakes (gf) I've never had latkes so I have no baseline to compare this dish but it was delicious. -Bucatini with Creamy Mushroom Sauce: Bucatini pasta tossed in housemade creamy mushroom sauce, roasted king oyster scallops, fried garlic, and spring onion. The roasted King Oyster mushroom was good but I wish the dish was more flavorful. I didn't taste the garlic nor spring onions but I do like the "butter" taste of the dish overall. -Bunny Peanut Butter Cheesecake (gf) was good but nothing to get excited about. I love the bunny chocolate on top, so cute! The chocolate tasted like cherries. -Bourbon Iced Coffee I had to yah know! I wanted to splurge on alcoholic coffee today. Calvin who took care of me was great! It was a good balance of attention and letting me enjoy my meal. I had an outstanding brunch Crepe on Saturday at the Veg Café. This cozy and inviting place is on the second floor of a historic old house at the corner of 25th and J Street. It is easy to miss, being upstairs and all, but it is definitely worth finding! Three of us enjoyed brunch together and we all got the same thing - Savory Spring Crepe, which was a wonderful blend of vegetables (think banana squash and kale) and curry folded into a most delightful gluten-free crepe. This might have been the best crepe I have ever had. What a wonderful medley of flavors. I could eat this forever. As I mentioned, the atmosphere at the Veg Cafe is very chill. Ive been coming here for years.. Sadly it was the worst experience EVER encountered and we will not be coming back. We weren't greeted at the door.. It felt like we were greeting them? How ironic. lol.. We sat ourselves, waited awhile to receive our waters.. We began to order the same order as we typically do every time over the years. We asked for our food to be well-done per usual. However, this time the order came out wrong and undercooked. Fine, we had no issues with waiting for our meal..mistakes happen.. After some time, the waitress who goes by the name Soul.. comes over and pulled up a chair.. to explain that we cannot have the meal cooked the way we requested? Like what? lol...Mind you, we've been coming here for years... She kept rambling on with her condescending tone and covert hostility with her explanation. At this point, I asked her to cancel the order.. she still insisted on speaking over me...and at me.. therefore I had to keep on respectfully asking her to just "cancel the order again" no problem... no further explanation needed. She cuts me off while I'm talking and says "yea, you said that like 5 times already" and turns around to make a catty "roaring" noise under her breath (which was childish and very rude) she still proceeded to ramble on to make her point? What is up with this lady being so argumentative?! Never in my life, have I've encountered someone like her here. We spend $70-100+ every time we come here and tip generously. (Of course not this time, not deserving) Then, when we ask to speak to the Manager because her appalling behavior.. he goes on defending her actions..and her "feelings".. like what? It is not our responsibility to cater to your employee's feelings. This is the food/restaurant industry. He goes on justifying her actions.. stating she was the longest employee employed there and was the one who trained him? Yet, again. Still siding with his friend.. instead of handling the customer concerns respectfully and professionally. From that moment on I knew he was not listening.. since they seem to be buddy buddy. I proceeded to ask the Manager if I can speak to upper management or the Owner? Shockingly, he said "he was the manager and Owner" ...lol the statement was quite contradicting.. because he just mentioned that the waitress Soul "trained him".. that's quite odd.. or shall we say fraudulent much? I came here with a friend on a Tuesday night for dinner & it was almost a full house. We ordered the fried chicken burger, beyond gyro, & mushroom calamari all to share and it was all pretty good. My favorite was the gyro! The feta they make in house is so good! The fried chicken burger tasted a bit too salty but still good & that was my friends favorite, overall great meal and ambiance. Super cute place in midtown, it's located upstairs of Thai Basil and had to walk upstairs to find out! First of all, the view is nice and that curry bowl was so deliciously filled with lentils, rice and creamy korma sauce mixed with I believe sweet potatoes which was a nice surprise. The seasonal sandwich was awesome too with mushrooms and I believe pesto sauce on toasted bread. The French fries were so well seasoned and starchy textured and I enjoyed the wedge potato a lot while waiting for my main dish! We asked the server if potatoes would be too much after all the food we ordered and they were hinting a yes but still said go for it so we did, and no regrets! I ordered the Sausage and hash browns and let me tell you as someone who isn't vegan that their plant based sausage tasted pretty close to the real thing. My hash browns that day were overly crispy and it was difficult to eat since I have braces. Also ordered the blue butterfly iced tea, and unfortunately didn't find it to have much flavor, if any. But their dessert, stole my heart away. Ordered the chocolate sweet potato pudding, died and went to heaven. Absolutely recommend ordering that! It's light and fluffy and just the perfect treat! Our server was wonderful. Kind and helpful with a lovely and fun personality. I can't recall her name but she was great. Note: plenty of street parking available for brunching. Since it was a cold day we started off with tea, which they have some unusual selections all flavorful. I liked mine so much I found it on the internet and ordered some. Saint Ginger is the name. Between the three of us we had Crepe Florentine, Moroccan Bowl, and Pesto gnocchi. We all agreed the Crepe Florentine was the best, although the Moroccan Bowl was a close second. The Pesto gnocchi was delicious but a bit heavy as you might imagine with the stated ingredients. It would have been good if we all shared a little bit of the gnocchi and spread the intensity around. When I ordered my food and used my American Express, it accepted the payment and then quickly declined payment. I had to then re-order my food and use a different card which eventually worked. Easy to miss, to walk right on by without noticing the sign on the corner indicating the cafe is open and it is ABOVE the Thai restaurant. Walking up the stairway felt like climbing up into a karaoke bar but once you get to the top the atmosphere is lovely. The seating is well thought out and the second floor feels like you were invited to a dinner party. The food was excellent. For a large portion The Works was a solid hit. The alternatives to conventional ingredients worked well and the tastes were interesting and satisfying. As I was waiting for my takeout order I enjoyed a well-made cappuccino and took in the view. Not that many true vegan options exist so I am glad this is a good one. It will be interesting to see if they can expand the menu a bit in the future. I ordered the Curry Bowl because I love a good curry dish served with rice. The Curry Bowl was underwhelming because the rice was room temp and the curry has a tad of warmth to it, but not even luke warm. I didn't bother to asked if it's supposed to be served room temp, because I did not the possibility to have it heat up in a microwave. The flavor was bland because it had a very mild taste of curry and the rice was more on the dry side. Sadly, the curry sauce was not enough to help with the dryness. I told the server after I order my meal that most likely I will order a dessert and a coffee. Maybe I was not cleared and the server wasn't not a coffee with dessert kind of person. My cappuccino came before the Ukrainian Babka Cake. I was surprised it was not hot but luke warm as I took a few sips while waiting for my dessert. I was actually wanting a hot drink, but does not seem possible here. When I order hot drinks anywhere I always had to worry to burn my tongue. It is definite the extreme opposite here. I never had Ukrainian Babka Cake but I had open mind to see if it's to my personal linking. The texture was interesting. It had a dense spongy texture with a bit of crispy outer to texture. Again, pretty bland but I am glad it was not overly sweet. I mentioned bland, I meant it's lack of any flavor, but sweet. They told me they used agave, but there should be other way to add more flavor to it. I Googled the traditional recipe and it uses honey. There are so many vegan honey recipe such as adding dandelion to the homemade vegan honey for flavor. Why can't agave be adding some more flavor to it? Or simply switch to maple syrup would have better flavoring to it. This definitely is one of the places with tons of good reviews, but I was underwhelmed. Reviewers had failed on this one. read more

We had a lovely Saturday fall brunch at the "secret garden" this morning (along with our puppy dog, one of the perks of outdoor dining). We arrived a little after opening at 10 am and had the garden to ourselves. I ordered the chik'n (made with battered oyster mushrooms) with pumpkin waffles. It was amazing - a savory, spiced waffle made for a unique flavor profile and the oyster mushroom "chikn" is ingenious vegan invention and delicious. My partner got the breakfast crepe, which was light and full of fresh vegetables in a warm coconut curry sauce. They have coffee service with brunch and we enjoyed oat milk lattes. Given how the current covid times have restaurants switching to cheap plasticware and increasing single-use waste, I really appreciated Veg still using real plates and silverware (and I felt safe while doing so). + 1 for Lovely garden ambiance + 1 Excellent service. + 1 for no plastic waste. Disheartened - and honestly confused - by the recent negative reviews. Veg is still one of the best vegan restaurants in Sac. Looking forward to going back soon! read more

I was super impressed with their ability to craft delicious vegan food with interesting combinations of ingredients that you can't just find anywhere. Their fig and tomato bruschetta- of the gods. I believe it had a drizzle of basil oil (or else some very bright green olive oil) and shaved parm on top to really just pack in the flavor. 1000/10 would eat again. The peach and ricotta flatbread was also amazing. It had so many textures and flavors to it. I would have happily had five of those as my meal. The Work was where I found myself a little underwhelmed. They were basically loaded steak cut fries. They tasted great and are a good choice if you want something comforting and filling!
