Brought my nephew who's visiting from California. The menu has gotten bigger since the last time I came! I ordered the mushroom burger melt and added arugula and it was super yummy! From the service to the food, everything was stellar! The menu options were extensive, I took a while choosing as everything sounded delish. I ended up ordering the shroom po'boy & to share amongst the others in my party, were the cauliflower wings & carne fries. I can't remember ever having a po'boy but I knew & heard of it. I was worried it was going to be spicy & I can't quite remember if the waitress said it wasn't too spicy or that it already came mix in. But either way it unfortunately wasn't at the comfortable spice level I was hoping for. However, did not stop me from eating it. It was packed with flavor & the brine they used to mimic the fishiness was on the money! I chose sweet potato fries as the side & they tasted great too. The apps we shared were nothing short of delicious. You had to roll us out mid way from all that food. I tried a bit of my friend's chiken & waffles w some of the fruit & I would order that in the future. We had planned on splurging w our meals so we kept w our waters but after seeing some of the pics posted of their concoctions, it seems like a must-try for next time! From what I could gather, Vegan Avenue has been a long-time staple of San Antonio, which I was happy to see given how it can be hard for vegan establishments to hold on. For our dinners, I got the chik'n parm sub and my dad got the fajita plate. My plate came with a decent-sized sub and a plentiful side of sweet potato fries. My dad's plate was HUGE as well---with lots of veggie-based protein "mimicking" carnitas. We both found are plates filling and flavorful. I would have liked if they had bottles of ketchup versus handing out ketchup packets, but that was a minor concern. They obvious do not want our business. Sunday afternoon, not busy, we walked in and there was no welcome. We wanted to sit at a booth as they were all taken, so we thought. (My back cannot handle the hard chairs.) We settled on a table with 4 chairs while my husband went back to the car to get my chair pad. But when they came with the waters, I asked if they could wipe and clean the table first. I had already switched out one chair with food on it. The first person pretty much ignored me and walked by while the server seemed nice and complied willingly. I tried to be friendly and said, I guess you had a busy brunch huh? My husband returned from the car and as we began to sit down, we realized they were busing and cleaning off the booth that was empty when we walked in. We assumed the people were outside, there is an outdoor patio area, where a couple was taking photos . So, all they had to do was clean the booth and we could have sat there? They knew this but would not allow us, even after they cleaned it off. We tried to talk to them, they said it as reserved for only 4 people. Well, isn't our table of 4, also for 4 people? They were not busy and had many tables still open. No one waiting. The rush was obviously over. Their attitude was never accommodating or welcoming. We decided to leave because if this is the beginning, the rest would not go well as they acted like we were not worth their trouble. Really? Just moved here one year now, every place we have eaten, we eat out twice a week, has been friendly and accommodating. They may some problems, but the attitude was always a smile and with open arms. Damn... when do these service charges stop? The dining experience was a mixed bag. There was a 4% service charge, but it's unclear if this is for credit card payments or if it is applied to all checks. The Mushroom Po' Boy was decent: the remoulade had a nice taste with a hint of spice, and the mushrooms were juicy and well-sized. However, the bread was just okay and the sandwich felt a bit small for $17. The Karma Curry Bowl, priced at $17, was a large portion with lots of veggies like broccoli and carrots, plus quinoa. Love this spot! It's been one of my favorite restaurants for a while now. They have such a great selection for vegans but especially for people who are also gluten free or soy free. I appreciate how they list each allergen online on the menu and when you order. This time I got the carne asada fries, which are soooooooo yummy, definitely a favorite when I want to indulge. I stopped here on a road trip and was excited to find an all vegan restaurant. It was a little pricey, but the food was excellent. I just wish they were a bit more environmentally friendly. I started with a cookies and cream milkshake. It was very good. I can't remember the last time I had a vegan milkshake. I also had the Cheezy Mushroom Burger with sweet potato fries, since they were out of regular fries. The burger was amazing and they nailed the sweet potato fries as well. For sustainability... The milkshake came in a plastic container with a big plastic straw. There were also two ketchup packets on my plate when I was served. I get that it's a fast food place, but a bottle of ketchup would have been nice. For cost, the milkshake was $9, which felt steep. The burger was $17, but I've had more expensive vegan burgers that weren't as good. There was a service charge of 4%, plus tax and a tip. It was $35 for a modest meal for one, so it adds up quick. The atmosphere was very chill and lowkey. This looks like a fun place to go to with a group, whether it's at the bar or in a booth. Very disappointed! Walked in told waiter it was a party of 6 and a high chair. I asked if we could put two 4 top tables together. Mind you we used to eat her often and put these exact two tables together. He told me he couldn't do that because he might need those two 4 top tables for other customers. A dear friend invited me to eat here, and I am so glad she did! Though I am not a vegan I am always up for trying new things and eating at new places. Our server, Justine was absolutely fabulous! She was so friendly and made great recommendations, and even shared how she makes her own vegan alternatives to meat substitutes. She was an absolute delight. I tried the fried oyster mushrooms with grits and hot honey (or agave), and it was amazing! My husband is from New Orleans so I am a very harsh critic on grits and these were definitely on point. The mushrooms were just a tad bit over fried but the flavor was delicious, so I forgave it. I had the basic drip coffee with the caramel almond creamer and it was the perfect balance. The portions are very big so you don't feel so bad about the price, but there are many other things. I would like to try here, so I will definitely be back. I came here tonight since I was going to be in the area and I got there around 9:30 PM.
