Um, what?! How is this vegan?! Whatever meat alternative they used, the texture was perfect. Also amazing seasonings and sauces. It was packed with flavor and lots of veggies. And it was super filling, too! I also grabbed a coconut water cause I need my electrolytes. I took my meal to-go, but kind of regretted it because the inside is so cute! Retro diner chic. I saw mention of this vegan Mediterranean restaurant after I failed to secure a reservation at Pura Vita, a nearby vegan Italian spot we liked on a previous vacation (review: https://yelp.to/FHUmsvRN-m). It was a further walk from our hotel, but we had no trouble securing a table for two here. The menu looked mostly Italian, so we were quite pleased with the choices. Jamie ordered the $25 Spaghetti Carbonara, a fresh tasting, gluten-free rendition with bits of vegan gianciale, green peas and an impressive whole "egg" yolk on top (Photo 8). I must've been in a "meatier" mood and went with the $26 Tagliatelle Bolognese, another gluten-free delight. The sauce had a savory umami flavor anchored by chopped mushrooms, carrot, and onion (Photo 9). The pasta had a surprising al dente texture. We shared the salty-savory $14 Grilled Artichokes with olives, capers, roasted peppers, lemon, and mint (Photo 10). Although portions were just right, we still found room for the generous $12 Brownie Sundae with vanilla ice cream, fudge sauce, coconut whip, and brandied cherries (Photo 7). What a find. It offers a fresh, modern take on vegan Italian cuisine. Drinks & Appetizers We started with two cocktails: the Strawberry Girl (alcoholic) and the Let It Be (non-alcoholic). Both were excellent. For appetizers, we ordered the Moroccan Cigars, served with a light, tangy yogurt-style dipping sauce with just the right amount of heat. The cigars themselves were delicate, filled with plant-based meat, and lightly fried. Think of an elevated, artisanal taquito. A perfect lead-in to the main course. Entrées We ordered two dishes: the Spicy Rigatoni Vodka with the chicken Parmesan add-on, and the Spicy Meatball Pizza. Pro tip: absolutely add the chicken Parmesan to the rigatoni. The vodka sauce was bold and spicy without overpowering the dish, and the chicken Parm was beautifully cooked with excellent texture, a natural and well-balanced pairing. The pizza was exceptional. True to its name, there was a meatball in nearly every bite. It's topped with ricotta and dusted with parmesan, and we added red chili flakes for an extra kick. The crust is very thin and artisanal, and every component, the marinara, meatballs, sausage, ricotta, and parmesan, worked in perfect harmony. The dough alone is worth finishing every last piece. Dessert We ended with the Brownie Sundae, which was the one minor letdown of the evening. The ice cream appeared to have been pre-scooped, as it was quite firm with visible ice crystals, not ideal. The brownie itself, however, was absolutely delicious, though the portion felt a bit small relative to the dish as a whole. Overall, the sundae was just okay. I'd likely skip it next time and explore other dessert options. Service & Atmosphere The service was fantastic, and the overall ambiance was warm and inviting. The pacing of the meal was particularly impressive. Drinks, appetizers, entrées, and dessert all arrived at just the right tempo. Nothing felt rushed, and nothing lingered too long. Parking There is no dedicated parking for the restaurant. Crossroads is located on Melrose Avenue, a busy shopping district with heavy foot traffic and limited street parking. That said, we visited on a Sunday afternoon and found street parking without much trouble. If spots near the restaurant are taken, driving a few blocks into the surrounding neighborhood usually turns up more options, just be prepared for a short walk. Civico makes a point of advertising gluten-free and vegan options, which naturally creates the expectation that staff are knowledgeable about dietary restrictions and food allergies. Unfortunately, that was absolutely not my experience. We went to Civico tonight for my husband's birthday dinner. As soon as we were seated, I proactively informed the staff that I have a gluten allergy. Nobody asked, but I made sure to tell them because my allergy is serious. A staff member later brought complimentary bread and pesto to the table. Since it wasn't on the menu and I couldn't verify what it was, I specifically asked whether the bread was gluten-free. He confidently told me that both the bread and pesto were gluten-free and even added that they bake the bread in-house. I asked again to confirm because I have an allergy. He assured me it was gluten-free. I then started eating the focaccia. About five minutes later, the same employee returned to the table and casually informed me that the bread was actually NOT gluten-free -- it was vegan. Let that sink in. I had explicitly disclosed a gluten allergy. I specifically asked whether the bread was gluten-free. I asked twice. I was told with complete confidence that it was safe for me to eat. By that point, I had already consumed it. I immediately stopped eating and was horrified. I am highly sensitive to gluten and became sick almost immediately. As I write this, I am feverish, nauseated, and dealing with the consequences of a mistake that should never have happened. What is even more shocking is what happened next: nothing. No manager came over. No meaningful apology was offered. Nobody checked on me. Nobody seemed to appreciate the seriousness of serving an allergen to someone who had clearly disclosed an allergy and specifically verified the food before eating it. In Los Angeles, where allergy awareness is standard practice and most restaurants take these matters seriously, this level of negligence is frankly inexcusable. This wasn't a complicated situation. This was bread -- bread usually has gluten. I asked if it contained gluten, assuming the answer was yes but he placed it on the table saying gluten free bread. Who does that?! I was told it did not have it with attitude from the guy as if I was asking a dumb question. That information was wrong and he shouldn't have said it without realizing he was hurting someone by being overly confident. If staff cannot accurately identify whether bread contains gluten, they should not be answering allergy questions. The confidence with which incorrect information was given is what makes this so concerning. As for the food itself, the gluten-free pasta and the rest of the meal were fine, but entirely unremarkable. Nothing we ate came close to making up for the experience. The bigger issue is trust. Once a restaurant demonstrates that its staff do not understand allergens and cannot reliably communicate ingredient information, it's impossible to feel safe dining there. I will never return, and anyone with celiac disease, a gluten allergy, or serious food sensitivities should think carefully before relying on the staff's guidance.
