I've been here a couple of times once with an ex-girlfriend that lives in the area who is a big food eater and so I expected better. Last few times I've been with less savvy eaters and it still sucks. I just don't get the hype. I've been to the downtown location of Voodoo many, many times. This was my first time at this Voodoo location on Davis St, but I felt I knew what I was getting to. The overall experience, ordering system, donut quality, etc. Were comparable. There were several customers ahead of us, but the queue was moving pretty quickly. It also helped that all the registers were open, and the employees were fulfilling orders like bosses. Today I indulged myself with seasonal specialty items. I got a peppermint cannolo, dashing pumpkin and threw in a buttermilk bar for good measure. This also ended up being one of each donut type including yeast raised, cake, and buttermilk. I enjoyed the peppermint cannolo. The dough had the perfect thickness, and the peppermint custard filling really packed in the peppermint flavor. The cashier who helped me recommended I try the dashing pumpkin since it was her favorite seasonal flavor. It was a round, dense donut with cream cheese frosting on top. The donut did not disappoint. Always a hit with friends to bring back memories of Oregon. Visited them before Halloween to pick some for my out of state friends. Chose their Halloween special box and an assorted half dozen. The lady on the counter was very nice to substitute the bacon donut with a Frankenstein one. She also offered to walk the boxes to the door as I had to carry 3 big ones. We came here with family from out of town who really wanted to check them out. I think my favorite would have to be the huge fried Memphis Mafia banana fritter with cinnamon, chocolate, peanut butter and chocolate chips. It's a monster! Well if I did one thing in Portland, this was it! I've seen and heard so much about it that I had to pop in. Only a stones throw from my hotel so I just took a lil walk down the block. There was no line as it was 3pm so I just chose a few I thought I'd like and they boxed them up! My total came to like $13.50 as they were all different sizes and prices. The guy described the hibiscus as having a floral flavor but I didn't get that while tasting it. The ODB wasn't anything to write home about, a bit on the heavy side and the chocolate coconut cake was just that..I wasn't blown away so I'm not sure what the hype is about but I'm glad I went I guess. The place was slow mid afternoon but a few folks did walk in right after my so a line started to form. It's a bright pink building so you can't miss it! Originally tried to go to their first location, but the line was too long so this was the alternative spot. Got the maple bacon bar, banana cream pie, mango tango, and the dirt. The maple glaze was too sweet for me but the bacon was so tasty. The banana cream pie was not too sweet at all and the cream was thick. The mango was also filled too the brim but also a bit too sweet. And the dirt was an oreo topped doughnut and not as sweet as expected. The doughnuts were also pretty chewy which was a pleasant texture. I wished I had gotten some of the more traditional doughnut flavors as well because I might have liked them more. They have crazy toppings and flavors and also more traditional ones like old fashioned. I am a sucker for Jelly donuts and the raspberry Romeo slaps! Had to try this place because I heard it was popular in the Portland area. The atmosphere of the shop was nice. The lady at the front was kind and provided good descriptions of the donuts. However, I felt that the selection was a bit too sweet. Everything felt a bit too "young" and there weren't many mature donuts for the older audience. My personal fav is PBJ (I am not a huge fan of their icing/glazing - too sweet for me) - it's a fluffy donut coated with runny peanut butter and filled with jelly. Out of this world. Also really like dirty old bastard - peanut butter drizzle with Oreo and chocolate glaze. If you haven't noticed, I am a sucker for peanut butter. Full disclosure :) My friend's fav is the chocolate coconut and ring of fire (cinnamon and spicy). Both are fun and yummy. Their cakey donuts aren't too dense and has a good pleasant texture. We saw the lines on 3rd Ave in downtown Portland and even when it was raining the lines were crazy long and looping. We headed to this location on Davis Street in Kerns which was about 1-1/2 miles from each other and easier to find than the one in downtown, plus there's ample free parking on their private lot. It is less busy as well, so our wait for donut bliss was much shorter! Yay! The shop was not very big inside. A few tables and one booth... there was even some sort of a pinball machine inside but the line went fast as there were like 3 or 4 stations open ready to take your order. There are pink picnic benches outside as well as a pink wall with a black painted silhouette of the voodoo doll. It was fresh, the dough light, the frosting melted in your mouth and we layered on thick. On top there's a pile of oreo chunks that finish off the donut with a perfect flavor. The Portland Cream was also very good. The chocolate frosting on top was thick and had vanilla "eyeballs" drawn on top. The cream inside was sweet and filling.
