We had been here one other time and had basically the same experience as the second time. The idea of the menu really is delicious, V really puts some thought into the menu & ingredients which is great for Juneau. They have great Taco Tuesday specials (1xtaco for $2.50) and Thirsty Thursday Specials (3xtacos + 1 beer for $11). BUT the service is absolutely horrible! There is always 1 guy that takes care of the tables and we've had different servers each time but they are so horrible! I was a server for 5 years in Juneau and it was painful to watch and be treated so poorly. There was only 3 tables occupied & he forgot multiple drinks from each table (including our first order). He took everyone's drink order then went to the kitchen and gossiped with the cook, while we could hear them the whole time! Everyone was looking at each other confused. Then when he finally came out again he forgot another women's order for the 3rd TIME! We finally got our drinks and ordered some nachos (which I highly recommend to share even the half order), and 2 tacos each. The nachos came out timely and were delicious. Then our tacos came out and they were cold! They had been sitting in the kitchen while the cook chatted with some diners and we finished our nachos. The shells were stale, the meat was cold and we were just over it. If you want to enjoy the menu, order to-go. If you go in you'll most likely be ignored, then you'll get to listen to them talk about you in the kitchen 10 ft away. Had the bulgogi tacos--fabulous! Alaska Brewery beers, followed with a sumptuous flan. Normally like to start with dessert, and this flan is the bomb. Thicker consistency than normal flan, but quite good. Had my best Juneau dining experience here. Relaxed atmosphere. Met the owner and talked a bit. The bartender provided fabulous service! This has to be one of the most well-executed unique food experiences of my life. So many times, fusion food ends up being interesting, but ends up being less tasty than either cuisine would have been on its own. V's Cellar Door is a delightful exception. The flavors of Mexican and Korean spices work startlingly well together, with the tanginess of Korean kimchi layering over the sweeter spices of the Mexican influence. While there are straight Mexican options on the menu (the Tacos al Pastor were exceptional), I cannot recommend the fusion options strongly enough. V also makes it easy to take a risk with her "two bite guarantee": if you take two bites and don't like the dish, you can send it back for another, no charge. I was never tempted to take advantage of it, because I liked everything I ate, but it gives peace of mind when taking a risk on more unusual dishes. The restaurant itself is an intimate space, with only 10 or 12 tables in an underground room. The decor is modern and relaxing, with indirect lighting, warm colors throughout, and pleasing artwork. While our server was very new and had a few issues with our order, she was very cheerful, and unlike many many servers in Juneau, she clearly cared that we enjoyed our meal, which made our time there extremely pleasant. All in all, V's Cellar Door is one of the best restaurant experiences I've had in a long time, and I strongly recommend it. read more

AMAZING! The flavors are, as Jamie Oliver would say..."RIDICULOUS!" The Korean spices fused into the Mexican flavors add some serious punch. The service is lovely, the décor is hip, warm and inviting (they say they have had a recent remodel). Didn't expect all of this out of a "cellar". Has nice selection of wine by glass or bottle, beer in bottle or tap (they actually had Elysian Night Owl Pumpkin Ale when we went!) Can't wait to try MORE on this interesting menu! Well, not even sure if the food is good yet. Been sitting here over an hour, and ordered within five minutes of sitting down. The lady was rude telling us it'd take 15-20 minutes to get our food, and we were confused why she was kind of salty about it. Just not friendly. And now it's been an hour and still no salad or burrito, or explanation or apology. Sooo not too stoked. read more

First, the food was delicious. I had a fusion chicken taco with some great Asian sauce on top. I would definitely eat it again, but order the food to go. The ambiance was a bit too dark and it was too loud to enjoy friendly conversation. Going there for an hour lunch will not be enough time to enjoy your food, so if it is possible, call your order in ahead of time or plan for an hour and a half. read more

When I hit the five star button, Yelp apparently describes it as "Woohoo! As good as it gets!". I would say that perfectly describes the Cellar Door operation that V is running. The praise for V's Cellar Door begins when you are walking downtown right past the Subway and Salt, the two opposite ends of Juneau's culinary spectrum. This positions V's in a geographic and culinary niche of appeasing the sandwich-tired without breaking the bank. The only thing beckoning you inside is the sign they place on the street, the unfairly humble praise on this website, or your new best friend that 'know's a place'. Once you walk (or stumble) down the stairs, there is no wait for seating, and no hostess to appease to. The informalities end there--the chairs are modern, the waitstaff wear ties, the lights are dimmed, the art consists of unique designs with a uniform color scheme, and the music is best described as a Pandora playlist of Kenny G that consistently thumbed down anytime a vocalist uttered a note. The allusions to foreplay in the musical choices are not accidental. I haven't spent a better 14 dollars since I lost my virginity, and when I have made eye contact with tourists taking their first bite of the fusion nachos-- I know I am not alone. V's addition of ginger infused salsa, cabbage, sesame seeds, and 'fusion sauce' to chips and cheese draws comparisons to such cliches as sliced bread and world peace. The portions are certainly enough to accommodate the most American of appetites; I could certainly never eat an entire plate (despite my valiant attempts). This is the kind of food that makes you realize how shit the entire Juneau culinary scene is, and (if you aren't from Juneau) sets an unfair expectation of it. For real, I live in Portland-- recently decorated the best food city in the country-- and there is nothing I have experienced that draws comparison to V's, which some in Juneau would consider a Subway alternative. Seriously, I have gone crazy trying to replicate the salsa at home--and I'm sure V is more than a little annoyed when I call trying to extract her recipe. The culinary genius carries to several other items: the fusion tacos, the burritos, and the shrubs (their original cocktails that they promote like it's the second coming). This is certainly a superior location for your taco Tuesday needs than the flight deck, at least for a normal rainy Juneau day. With heaping praise comes light notes of improvement that extend the virginity metaphor. Sometimes it takes too long for the nachos (an appetizer) to come, like 30 minutes. Sometimes they are out of the Alaskan Summer and they have no palatable substitution. Sometimes the music cuts out (I AM STILL LISTENING PANDORA) and the atmosphere becomes extremely awkward. The intimacy that normally works towards V's advantage makes it clear to you, the diner, that the whole restaurant can hear your conversation and you realize that maybe you shouldn't be talking at all. And then you're eating the nachos in silence, and enjoying them, and you want to share that experience with your dining partners, and they want to share it with you, but you both know that any words of praise will be overheard by those at the next table, and you don't want them to know how good of an experience you're having, because you want to afford them the thrill of their own personal culinary discoveries. And then Kenny G comes back on. It should be noted that this perspective comes from a vegetarian diner, but I have heard nothing but great things about her Korean chicken. It should also be noted that I would do disgusting things for a fusion breakfast burrito. TL;DR: Go to V's. Get the Fusion Nachos. Ruin El Sombrero for yourself. Tip them a month of Pandora One. read more

Went to dinner here tonight based on reviews... Ordered the pork tacos and was very disappointed. The tortillas tasted like they had been microwaved and were falling apart. On the inside of the tacos was a little bit of pork that tasted like it had been soaked in some sort of chili sauce and a lot of cilantro. Did not come close to what the menu described. We are typically not fond of Mexican food but this was truly delicious!! The spicy flavors of both Korean and Mexican were toned down by V's fusion sauce. Her sauce made the fusion nacho's out of this world. We added the bulgogi beef. We were so tempted to order a second plate of those nachos. There were layer upon layer of different flavors tantalizing your mouth. V really has a way with food. My husband also quite enjoyed the gin drink created by V. We also could not understand why there weren't more people there. There is a sign out front and you have to walk down the stairs to get there. We were so glad we came upon it and decided to be brave in trying something new. It was really a treat. read more

Fun and hip decor, friendly and informative service, and an interesting Korean-Mexican fusion menu. Our server described the non-alcoholic Shrubs in such mouth-watering terms that I had to try one. Blueberry-pomegranate Shrub was delicious. Nice selection of beers, too. Our server also explained the two-bite rule -- if after two bites you do not like what you ordered, you can send it back to the kitchen for a do-over. That made ordering easy. Dinner was slow because a large (I mean, like half the restaurant large) group had just ordered. I loved the flavors in my infused rice bowl with bulgogi and kimchi rice. I wish it had been served hotter -- I had expected a steaming hot dish and was surprised that it was just warm. My partner thoroughly enjoyed the infused burrito with spicy chicken. Horrible service. Our waiter for the night was slow with the menu. Then she stood there waiting for our order before we could look at the menu. Drinks were not listed on the menu, we had to ask if they had other drinks beside water. After ordering, our waiter never came back to check on us. Another waiter shyly brought us our drinks and later some silverware. That was nice of him. We waited for over an hour and never got our food. While new families arriving were getting food quickly (same dishes we had ordered) and they were being serve by a different waiter that was attentive to them. We watched another couple waiting for service and no one waited on them. One went up and found two menus somewhere. They waited for someone to take their orders and no one showed up at their table: not even to give them water. They got up and left. We finally let the other waiter know we had waited over an hour and we canceled our order. Then our missing waiter spoke up and said the food was setting on the counter, did we wanted her to bag it for us? No telling how long it was setting there on the counter. We never got a good apology and no offer of restitution other then the two drinks were free and have a good night. I never left a restaurant before in my life and we eat out a lot. I also never felt the need to do a review before until now. While the other reviews say the food is good, we never got a chance to try it nor will we ever go back to try it since no offer of restitution was made for the bad service. read more
