Wailua Shave Ice was exactly what we needed after spending the day in the Kauaʻi heat. There was a small line when we arrived, but the three employees worked through it quickly while staying friendly and upbeat the entire time. The cashier even noticed we were kamaʻāina and gave us a discount, which was a nice surprise and definitely always appreciated. I ordered the root beer float with vanilla ice cream, and it completely lived up to my expectations. The portion was generous, the shave ice had the perfect texture, and they definitely did not skimp on the syrup or the scoop of ice cream at the bottom. By the time we left, the line had grown quite a bit, but after trying it myself, I can honestly say it is worth the wait. Be patient with the staff because they're working hard, and the end result is absolutely worth it.

I can see why they were voted best Hawaiian ice 5 years in a row! Simply THE BEST. I think what makes their shaved ice stand out are the toppings and the quality of their flavors. These aren't regular dyed syrups anyone can buy from a grocery store. House made, fresh ingredients is what sets this place a part. Service is quick with a kiosk or you can place your order with a worker in the front. Clean and spacious shop that offers free parking and restrooms. The taste will blue you away and I wish this place had another location in California because I'll be dreaming about it until I go back! Mahalo!!!

Wow! Wow wow! This was one of my favorite shaved ice places ever. The fact that they have a vegan foam for the ube iced was awesome. So many times I have to skip out of the foam or the whipped cream because it's dairy. Back in the mainland and I'm already missing this place. Everyone there was wonderful and helpful in answering my questions. It's nice and cool in the shop. There are a few tables and a couple of benches. I wish I would have gone to this place in the beginning of my trip so I could have returned multiple times. But now I know for my next visit.

This establishment is located in a large shopping center with plenty of parking out front. This shave ice was DELICIOUS, I ordered the lava flow, so soft and flavorful, I would absolutely return. During the weekdays it was relatively empty and service was very fast. During the weekend however it was packed with a line out the door, so I'd definitely aim for a weekday if possible.

I'm not a shave ice person and even the places that people rave about are not my thing. We happened to be at this plaza and my son and I got ice cream a few doors down but my husband wanted to get shave ice. I tried some of what he got and I was surprised how much I liked it. My husband got the strawberry mango and added some mochi. The syrup wasn't too sweet but was flavorful. The ice was fine and light and the flavoring was spot on. The toppings made a difference for me and I ended up liking it a lot. Most of the shave ice places I've tried only had the syrup. We've been trying a couple of shave ice places and this one has been my favorite so far. I'll probably be back to try their other flavors before we leave this area.

Arrived 5:30pm after a day on the north side of the island. Plenty of parking. The place has a welcoming atmosphere and an open feeling. It was fairly busy with a steady flow of customers. We ordered the Triple Coconut and the Strawberry Mango. We paid at the counter and shortly thereafter my name was called. The shave ice had a wonderful texture. The natural ingredients deliver a healthy and satisfying treat. The Strawberry Mango was fantastic with mango juice, strawberry purée and mango chunks. The Triple Coconut was flavor and texture delight with coconut milk and flakes. We look forward to returning! Highly recommended!

This shaved ice definitely exceeded my expectations. This location was recommended to me by a friend as a must try, and I'm so glad I did. The flavors are both very refreshing and not overly the top sweet. The shaved ice itself is fluffy and melts in your mouth. I was a bit overwhelmed on which option to chose as there's quite a few combo mixes to chose from. There was quite a bit of a line when we arrived, but it seemed to move quick, and our orders also came out pretty quick. Definitely a must try if you're in the area.

Hands down best shave we have ever had!!!! Planning to go back again. We are staying 30 minutes away but it's worth the drive. Nothing artificial tasting and huge portions. It is literally one of the best things we have ever had! We got the Ube, root beer float, and the Lava flow. All of them were insanely delicious. If you want authentic shave ice with amazing quality ingredients and fresh fruit, it's worth the drive!!!!!

Everyone told us to go to JoJo's- sorry JoJo- THIS place is the sh%#! Please walk, run, waddle your way HERE! Set in a little strip mall, so lots of parking! Friendly staff. Nice air conditioning inside. They also sell merch. We shared the Almond Joy and the Lava Flow. Both delicious! The Almond Joy had great texture with the almonds and toasted coconut. And the Lava Flow was juice and perfectly sweet. No high fructose corn syrup here!

First of all, the staff here are so friendly and willing to help with recommendations for flavors. The shave ice itself is delicious and the flavors are so fresh. I appreciate how they're honest about how there are artificial flavors in the rainbow shave ice, but trust me I'm not eating shave ice for health benefits LOL. Mochi comes with the rainbow shave ice and was the perfect addition. Not all of the flavors come with mochi, but it's definitely worth paying extra for it. I think it's only a few dollars. Lava flow comes with haupia (coconut) foam. Light and airy. I wish we came more than once so I could've tried more flavors. There's also indoor seating and air conditioning!

If I could eat shaved ice every day this is where I would do it. We ordered the Ube, Cookies and Cream and Love Potion#9 and they were ALLL so delicious. If you love ube anything ... you'll love this! It wasn't too sweet and the foam was yummy--I'll definitely be craving it. Light, fluffy, and full of flavor! My daughter loved the fresh strawberries on the Love Potion #9; perfectly blend. My husband who never eats dessert loved the Cookies and Cream. Highly recommend this place!! Super cute spot with very few seats though...would expect more places to sit especially since it's so crowded! Service was great...staff was super helpful. Self-serve kiosks for ordering made for fast ordering as well.

The only shave ice place where my family keeps coming back! Saw a long line of people so decided to just stand in it since it was for shave ice. Tried a different one each time we came. They use real fruit juice so it's not as bright colored or sweet like the other places! What we got: Kauai Orange Dream ($6.50): orange, coconut milk, and haupia foam on top. Tastes like orange juice in my opinion. Shave ice was soft and absorbed the juice pretty well so you don't get just plain ice at the end after drinking up the juice. Light coconut milk taste since the orange flavor overpowers it. Lava Flow ($6.50): pineapple, coconut, and strawberry. It has strawberry and pineapple pieces on top. Light tasting flavors, but it was so refreshing! Love Potion #9 ($6.50): strawberry, vanilla, and milk. Probably my favorite one out of the 3 I tried. It was like a vanilla milk shake topped off with strawberry sauce and pieces. Service: The guys behind the counter was super nice and they actually remembered me when I came back the next day! Place gets pretty packed and they have seating area along the truck and some tables on the side. Delicious, flavorful, and not too sweet. I highly recommend trying this out. It tastes similar to Taiwanese shave ice but with different toppings. I had the triple coconut and my friend had ube. This is a must try in Kauai! read more

Shaved ice was pretty good, very refreshing. They also sell apparel, hats, shirts, pins, and stickers. The reason I'm leaving 3 stars is the bathrooms, which were horribly filthy. It reeked and I've seen Port a potties cleaner then this. Makes me wonder how dirty the rest of the establishment may be based on the cleanliness in the bathrooms. read more

GET DA MANGO ONE. Just get it. Trust me. Now that that's been said, I think the reason why I love this little red trailer can be summarized in one word: "refreshing". Unlike most places that use sticky, almost sicky sweet surgery syrups, Wailua's fresh juices are the equivalent of a breath of fresh air in the shave ice business. The tasty, season-appropriate, flavors combinations (or wonderful lack thereof; triple mango & triple coconut!) with minimal toppings leave you feeling cooled down, satisfied, and...refreshed! Another reviewer mentioned that she was personally disappointed with the lack of add-ons like ice cream, mochi, etc., but I feel like those, while undeniably delicious, make shave ice too heavy. More of a dessert than shave ice. Kinda like getting a milkshake when all you needed was a smoothie. Also, the staff is very friendly and the area in general just has a comfortable vibe. Oh, and follow Wailua on FB to get updated on limited time flavors! Wished so bad that I could try the lychee one but I live on Oahu. Regardless, just get Da Mango One. Shoots! read more

I hesitated to write a review at all - what's there to say in the 600-something review for Wailua Shave Ice that hasn't been mentioned thus far? In the end, what compelled me was simply how ridiculously addictive their bowls are. Once my mom and I tried the Triple Coconut (one of the best, if not THE best frozen dessert I've ever had) and the Lava Flow (Mom's fav), we were hooked, and returned the following days during our visit to Kauai to enjoy the Almond Joy and Pineapple Strawberry offerings. I am not a creature of habit (especially not while on vacation in a place such as Kauai where there are countless activities to partake in and sights to behold and poke to inhale). My mom is also not a huge fan of desserts; she's more of a flavored-protein-powder-in-oatmeal-is-sweet-enough-and-more-fibrous-anyway kind of woman. Alas, the feather-light shave ice, all-natural juices and supplemental ingredients used here are rich in flavor and converted us both from our stubborn ways, and my mom is now considering introducing a shaved ice maker to her home. I opted for this shaved ice truck instead of others in the area because of tire aesthetic but now I know, don't pick based on aesthetic! Lol, their shaved ice was tasty but not the authentic Hawaiian shaved ice you may be thinking of. The foam on top was also a bit strange in texture as well as taste. I would recommend walking down a little further to find the authentic stuff! read more

Next level shave ice. Located in Kapa'a Town in an empty lot next to an antique store. Wailua Shave Ice is a food truck with counter seating and picnic tables. Tried the Love Potion, Coconut ³, and Orange Dream. All were amazing! There are layers of flavors, topped with fresh fruit. The ice is shaved to a unique and snowy texture. The bowl of shave ice is huge, but it's very light and refreshing. Perfect on a warm afternoon. There's even a water cooler to wash your hands. Good people. Not your usual shave ice spot. There isn't a usual menu listing 50 different artificial flavors. It's finely shave ice and a preset menu of combinations of flavors. Good for those like myself who occasionally choose a strange set of flavors and have to eat around ones i don't like as much! Another plus, I appreciate the real and local ingredients Wailua Shave Ice uses like pineapples and li hing. Coconut x Coconut x Coconut: luxurious coconut milk, haupia "foam" replacing a typical snow cap and roasted coconut flakes for some crunch. This is one of the best sweet treats i've ever had. Owner Brandon Baptiste and his staff (Josh Tamaoka and Micah "Bao Bing" Chinese shave ice Youns) are so friendly. They've taken shave ice to the next level. It's a cross between shave ice and snow. So fluffy and ingredients are real. No artificial flavor. It's hard to explain how the texture is. I usually say I've had better, but this time I can say this is better. It's $6.50 each. Shave ice is a must when visiting Kauai. I live on Oahu and have tried some delicious shave ice. On Kauai this is one of the more popular shave ice spots. They serve it out of a cute little food truck off of the main highway in downtown Kapaa. We tried the wailua sunrise, pineapple and orange. This one has the least sugar, it is mostly the sugar from the fruit juices. We sat at the high top chairs one of the windows on the truck. One of the girl was kind enough to ask if we wanted to try their famous coconut concentrate that they serve on their shave ice. Unfortunately the one we ordered didn't come with it so it was a kind gesture that she asked. Very reasonable prices and 10% off you order when you check in for all you regular Yelpers! read more

Cute little shaved ice truck on the main street. We ended up getting the Love Potion #9 and adding ice-cream. It was a decent size, but maybe a bit smaller than I'd hope for the price. The shaved ice was definitely a different texture than normal and that's what made it unique and delicious!!! Fast service and quite a few tables surrounding the truck for seating. This shave ice was good. The ice is soft and the flavorings tasted of real fresh fruit, however, the flavor seemed very light compared to the shave ice I had the day before elsewhere. Tasted a little more like watery juice than the flavorful shave ice I expected. Wasn't bad, just wasn't blow my socks off good. Maybe it was just the flavor I chose, but my husband said his wasn't as strong either. We still enjoyed the treat. read more

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWASY STOP HERE!!! this place is bomb and has the cutest seating area with great locally owned stores to browse when waiting for your order of shaved ice. I ordered the local favorite - "Almond JOY" - its to die for, but you gotta eat fast with the coconut milk and hot chocolate on the top. Can't get over how delicious this place is. A great little shave ice truck with natural, homemade syrups. The lava flow was delicious with pineapple syrup, drizzles of strawberry purée and capped off with coconut cream and slices pineapple and strawberries. The hubby enjoyed his with pineapple and orange. The flavors were great and not cloyingly sweet like the typical shave ice syrups. Not too many flavor options, but I appreciate that they make everything from scratch. There are a couple of picnic tables right next to their truck for you sit and enjoy your shave ice. read more

It's good, but not great. I had shaved ice like twice a day for the week I was in Kaua'i. Experienced a handful of places, this one being my first one because it is so hyped. And I gotta say it doesn't live up to its hype. I'm so disappointed, it's like the prettiest shaved ice I have ever seen but lacked flavor. Lava flow: pineapple juice, coconut foam, strawberry purée , pineapple, and strawberry topping. I loved the coconut foam, and I get it all the ingredients are fresh and local but again it lacked flavor. I just felt like I was eating a watered down fruit juice. Overall the customer service was organized and they took care of the crowd with ease. Also they were located in a spot with a lot of picnic tables so groups will be fine. read more

The shave ice here is delicious! The fresher ingredients lead to a smaller menu but all was good. The lines were very long most likely due to Memorial Day weekend but we didn't wait that long and the staff got our order correct and in our hands fairly quickly. That's the last nice thing I have to say. The latte comes from a second window, where a different employee was actively hostile. Busy morning, so I asked if the drink was mine. She snapped that my name was written on the cup. It was -- facing her. I was apparently supposed to read it through the cup. Here's the real problem: someone clearly put thought into the roasting side of this business, and then handed the entire customer-facing operation to people who received no training whatsoever. Not in the coffee, not in basic hospitality. You can teach someone to smile. You can teach them to answer a question without contempt. Nobody bothered. Average coffee, worse service, priced for people who won't be back anyway -- and given the volume of visitors, that model probably works fine for them. It won't work for me. Kauai has cafés run by people who are genuinely obsessed with what they're doing. Go find one of those. Serious coffee drinkers should walk right past this place.

I love wailua shave ice and I make sure to tell others about it too. I love that they use fresh fruit juice as an alternative to syrup. The fresh fruit on top is definitely a winner in my books. I've tried their lychee, da mango one, love potion #9, the lava flow, ginger ale, and coconut. All sooo delicious. They have excellent service and are full of aloha. Not only do I love all their shave ice flavors, but what impressed me was that they serve your shave ice in a chilled bowl. And if you want it to go, it's in a nice big cup. Portions are big and flavors are on point. I love the lava flow with the fresh riped pineapple on top which is some of the best I've ever had. Wailua shave ice is like no other shave ice you'll find on Kaua'i. They use real fruit for their syrup so it's healthier and better tasting than the shave ice found at other places. I love shave ice but stopped eating it cause the syrups used where way too sweet and sugary, but Wailua shave ice solved that problem for me! Nice and light and refreshing. This is a shave ice unlike what you've ever experienced before, shave ice with a gourmet twist. All the flavors have great balance and fresh flavor. Had the Lihing Punch and Love Potion #9. Both were topped with fresh fruit. The ice is perfect consistency, soft and not grainy in the least. The flavorings taste of fresh fruit and not overly sweet like most classic shave ice stands.
