This place is great for brunch. Upon entering you can find very enticing pastries by Machine Shop Boulangerie such as almond, chocolate, ham and gruyere croissant. Their pastries are very delicious, buttery and crunchy. On the right corner you can find some Dutch goodies such as strop waffles. The staff is super friendly and welcoming. Very knowledgeable on the pastries. I ordered the stir fry vegetable. I asked the waiter what kind of veggies in it and I was told it has zucchini and squash. I asked for wheat toast. When my order was served I noticed that my toast was white bread. I was told that they were out of it. The did not notify me and just changed it to white. Also in my veggies there were some red potatoes. I am on low carb diet. If I knew that there would be potato I would've ordered something else. That's why I took a star down. Winkel is a solid spot for a brunch with family. Came here with my parents for a brunch before a show. The service was friendly and the food was good. Nothing fancy and a decent price. We arrived around 12pm and didn't have to wait. I ordered an omelette with pears and brie and my husband ordered the veggie dog. The eggs were solid but I thought the pears were a little under cooked. I didn't really like the salad but the potatoes and onion were very good as a side. We had the pork and gouda omelette - yum, every version of the eggs benny on the menu - yum x3, a smash burger which was deemed better than smash burger itself, chicken and waffles - delicious, and we shared the bread pudding french toast which I'm still thinking about. But the best part was the lovely staff, everyone was so kind and attentive but Mr. Lowell the manager was 11/10! What a warm, kind, and considerate man. I was intrigued by a few interesting items on the menu! We ordered the deep fried french toast, which was a different twist on conventional french toast selections. Although I think it was leaning a bit too much on the burnt side, I think the flavor of the french toast was delicious and sweet. The candied bacon was a nice addition and the overall dish reminded me of the taste of funnel cakes! The eggs benedict was great: flavors were yummy and the hollandaise sauce was well done. This is my favorite brunch spot in Philly. Everything is always fresh and no frills. I take everyone here (my family when they visit, girl's brunch, colleagues etc). Had to ask for my daughter's hot chocolate like 4 times before it came to our table and it was not worth the wait -- tasted like it was made with water. Great brunch spot with Dutch roots. We visited on Saturday around 10:45 am and got seated immediately which we weren't expecting. The place filled up pretty quickly come 11:30. We sat outside, next to a fairly busy street on the edge of the sidewalk next to cars flying by so maybe request a seat against the wall if possible. On to the food: Service was super quick and the food came out lightning fast. Our waiter was extremely pleasant and let us know about the rotating brunch specials and they all sounded delicious. We opted for the Omelette of the Day, French Toast Special (Blueberry Bread Pudding), and Chicken and Waffles with scrapple gravy. The omelette had roasted tomato, cheddar, and candy bacon and came with a side of smashed potatoes and salad. The omelette was pretty good, although the roasted tomatoes were whole cherry tomatoes and made cutting it a bit messy. The potatoes look super basic, but surprising had great seasoning, so don't judge a book by the cover. The salad was nice and refreshing. The French toast was delicious! It was fried blueberry bread pudding, so it was so moist and bursting with flavor. The chicken and waffles were also good. The brined chicken was tender although a fairly small portion and the waffle was just ok and pretty flat, but the added scrapple gravy was a nice twist on a classic dish. We were in the area and chose Winkel for my daughter's 18th birthday breakfast. Myself, my daughter and 2 of her dear friends were very excited after reviewing the menu and reviews. We ordered the following: Deep Fried French Toast: nutmeg, cinnamon, clove, almond custard, whipped cream, powdered sugar Belgian Waffle with Braised & Fried Chicken: whipped cream, scrapple gravy, maple syrup Blackberry & Bacon pancakes The breakfast was extremely underwhelming. The blackberry and bacon pancakes were a nice thought that honestly just doesn't come across well when all is said and done. The flavor of the blackberries doesn't much complement the pancakes and the odd pieces of bacon don't really add anything from a flavor perspective other than being "different." The deep fried French toast was probably the best of the dishes but still not something either of the young ladies who ordered it would be interested in trying again. I tasted a bit of it and found the almond custard to be amazing but the fried French toast itself was not wonderful. Finally, the chicken and waffles. If you're going to make chicken and waffles please make sure you can make an excellent piece of fried chicken. My daughter's friend ate her plate so slowly that I knew she didn't like it. I asked to taste the chicken and immediately said "what on earth, did they boil this?" After coming to read the menu description, yup they braised it before frying it. Not sure why they did that, it ruined the fried chicken. Our waiter was very nice, extremely outgoing and gave lots of recommendations. Winkel continues to delight with the addition of hot chocolate on the beverage menu and a recently added Fisherman's pancake on their waffle/pancake line up. Even more heartwarming was learning of chef Joncarl Lachman's decision to travel to the Ukraine for 8 days to work with chef Jose' Andres in his World Central Kitchen. The other World Central Kitchen volunteers and the Ukrainians fleeing for safety are lucky to have this warm charmer of a human being to work with and be fed by. My husband arranged a getaway trip to Philly and put together an itinerary which included Winkel for breakfast today. Wow! What a find! It's in a great space with a very pleasant atmosphere, high ceilings, music and noise not annoyingly loud like so many restaurants these days. I ordered the blackberry pancakes and my husband ordered Hete Kip (spicy chicken) uitsmijter, a "Dutch open-faced sandwiches w/ two sunny eggs" which was served with pickles, salad, and toast. Both were wonderfully delicious. The pancakes were the best I've ever eaten, sweet and flavorful with a firm golden brown outer texture and a soft, moist, and fluffy interior. Every bite was delightful. The food together with the very friendly and attentive staff (the manager came up to us and every diner to ask how our meal was -- something extra special these days and greatly appreciated by customers like me), made our visit to Winkel, a Philadelphia treasure, a very memorable one. I have been to Winkel several times when I have been in Center City Philadelphia. I keep coming back because they really have exactly the right formula for a breakfast/brunch/lunch place: warm and genuinely friendly welcome, terrific and attentive service, and surroundings that are both comfortable and on point. My most recent visit was last week, on a weekday late morning. They were comfortably busy but we did not have to wait for a table. I had a delicious salmon benedict, which included a small salad and very tasty potatoes. My colleague was ready for lunch so he had an excellent chicken sandwich (he said :-) ); even though he has a very robust appetite, he ended taking about a third of it home with him. Both of us had coffee which was good and they were not kidding when they said on the menu that the cup was bottomless. Never once did we have to ask for refills; our server seemed to always be there pot in hand to give us more. I'll definitely be back again and again. Nobody does it better. read more

Yes, there was a wait for weekend prime time brunch, but it was sooo good. I got an omelette and Im a salad girl so I absolutely love when my breakfast comes with salad (yay!). On to the food review: The coffee was actually perfect, not bitter, definitely fresh and they do have almond milk for the non dairy eaters! The omlette was nicely cooked; however there were few contents inside. The mushrooms were far and few between and I found the overall omlette lacked any flavor. I've gone with the big breakfast twice and it's great every time. 3 eggs, a variety of meats, toast and potatoes yum. The girlfriend went with the omelette special of roast pork, Cooper Sharp, ong hots and broccoli rabe. I think they forgot the broccoli rabe nonetheless very delicious. Also came with potatoes and choice of toast. Rival Brothers coffee is very good and tasty. I had a fantastic brunch at Winkel. I arrived with memories of the delicious apple pie they use to sell when the location was More Than Just Ice Cream. Now that apple pie is like a distant memory. At the forefront of my mind is the stack of large fluffy and delicious pancakes I had at winkel. Maybe the best pancakes I've ever tasted. Fighting with the pancakes at the forefront of my mind is the brunch special which I was lucky enough to try as well. It was a French toast made of various pastries sold at Winkel. There is nothing quite like it in Philly as far as I know. It was an amazingly tasty collection of flavors. And there was the meat... perfectly cooked fatty bacon, and I mean fatty in a good way. Thick scrapple that was lightly fried to perfection, which is hard to do when the scrapple is thick. Service was efficient and friendly. Brunch doesnt get any better. read more
