We ordered an: Old Fashioned- perfectly made with high west Wood Ash Rye Whiskey- It came out with a beautiful presentation with the smoked cedar, but that's it, I prefered the regular old fashioned better :P Pork Belly + Watermelon- WOW this was incredible!! This was my first time dining in St George and we had a blast. The restaurant is very cutting edge and we came for Brunch. Please make sure to make it a stop while you're there. It's in the cute down town area and in a fantastic hotel. We had a group of 8 that they easily accomodated with a reservation. We had Champagne, delicious meals including steak and eggs that were amazing, Croque Madame that was totally ledgit and some amazing biscuts that can stand up to any southern food restaurant. Plus the wait staff were kind and accomplished. We stayed for almost 2 hours because we were having so much fun. I'll make it a stop on the way to and from Vegas anytime. read more

Wow. This place is simply amazing. It's located in the cutest little part of town. The hotel has valet parking but there is also a public parking garage across the street. The food is amazing, y'all. I mean really, really, amazing. I really enjoyed our food coming out a little staggered because we were sharing dishes and it gave us time to really enjoy each dish as well as each other's company. We started at the bar with some of their signature cocktails. You can tell they mean business when you pull up to the bar. They have all the ingredients at the ready for whatever you wish. "The Gathering" was a super refreshing mule kinda drank, "The Mirage" was tropical and a perfect compliment to the St George heat. The food was so dreamy. You have to try the biscuits and "the local" salad was perfect to share. I had the "Pappardelle Pasta" and it was one of the best pasta dishes I've ever eaten. The texture of the homemade pasta and the slightly spicy tomato mushroom ragu was amazing and reminded me of something I ate in Italy. It was an experience. I cannot recommend this dish enough. My Husband had the Swordfish with chimichurri sauce and WOOOOW. It was so amazing! The flavor of the swordfish was out of this world. We were looking forward to this new 'fine dining' place in St George. The aesthetics are very beautiful and 'set the table' of our anticipation for a solid experience. From the get-go we noticed only one server trying to run around and meet peoples needs. Service was very slow due to this. It took 8-10 minutes for her to get around to taking our order and later we watched our order cool when it was up and waiting for her to pick it up. It cooled for 6-8 minutes before finally bring brought to our table. (Tip to owners, get more staff). I heard people rave about their biscuits, but mine were flat and cold. They were ok, but not rave-worthy. The "Belgium sipping chocolate" tasted like nestles...disappointing to a chocolate snob. The French toast was ok. This tapas style place is worth going to in St.George!! It's inside of a hotel, and everything is for sharing between friends, family, significant other ... The ambiance is simplified rustic charm. The food was wonderful, the hummus w/scallion oil & harissa was sooo good!! We had the crispy potatoes: fingerlings w/pork belly, jalapeño creams, topped w/ melted pepper jack & cheddar cheese! The crunch came from the crispy pork belly!! The pollo ala brasa has a wonderful smoked flavor w/Latin spices!! This & the hummus was our favorite out of the five items we tried!! Our server Jaxson was wonderful & conscientious server!! This place was the highlight of our trip to Southern Utah!! Their smoked old fashion was very delightful!! Very chic, and nicely designed interior. Interesting menu. Everyone raves about the pork belly, because IT IS that good. The execution and the composition showed some serious experimentation from the chef and were delicious. Get it! I had swordfish special which was well cooked and had some nice flavors, the white rice was bland though. Husband had pasta, he really liked the sauce, but it arrived a little cold. The key lime pie was really authentic and delish! Also we had some plain grilled veggies which were done perfectly. It's a cool restaurant in old town St George, modern and inventive. This is really only in reference to the host @ the podium, whom we never got past. My husband & I went for our wedding anniversary. Admittedly, we didn't make a reservation because it was a Thursday. However, the host seemed positively disgusted with the idea that we would expect to just walk in. We were enjoying ourselves & not in a rush so we went to wait in the bar area. We enjoyed a couple overpriced drinks, but after an hour of sitting there and catching side glances from said host who seemed more as if he wished we'd simply go away, we ultimately paid our tab and went across the street for a much friendlier, welcoming evening... along with two other couples who made similar comments to us as we were waiting for the crosswalk to turn. read more

We made a reservation there for brunch. When we got there, we stood at the service desk while multiple people walked right by us and didn't even acknowledge us. Finally, someone came by and took us to our seats. We ordered the French toast, the WAR burger, and a Turkey sandwich. We waited 40 minutes for the burger and French toast and then an extra 5 for the Turkey sandwich. I don't know what was going on because I could see food on the countertop and I saw our waiter go over there multiple times and talk to the people cooking, but never came to us to say anything about it. The turkey sandwich was mediocre at best, not worth the money and DEFINITELY not worth the time we waited to get it. The WAR burger came to us COLD and really did not taste that good. The only decent part of the meal was the French toast, but it didn't even come warm. For a very high rated place to eat, the food was very underwhelming and the service was very neglectful. The restaurant wasn't busy either, and we could see the waiter and the chefs talking to each other and laughing. I get it, things happen in the kitchen. They might've been short staffed. The LEAST they could've done is let us know that the food was going to take a long time. Also, the menu was limited, so it doesn't make sense why it took so long. There's not a lot of variety happening in the kitchen. This place was so high rated and we were so excited to go, but we could not have been so disappointed! Never coming back here again! read more

I've been here 3 times. 2 dinners and 1 brunch. It's such a fun setting I love it!! The first two times were great, and we loved what we had. Pasta, sliders, biscuits, lamb korma, and service was awesome. Brunch was another story. The breakfast was lacking (out of blue corn so couldn't order those-which I get there are supply issues), potatoes were overcooked and very crunchy and the biscuits were burned on top and hard (which was embarrassing they would serve them that way since I brought friends and raved about them beforehand). When our waitress asked how things were I said I was a little disappointed in the breakfast, she just gave me a dirty look, walked away and was not so nice after that. Okaaaaayy. I mean she did ask! My wife had the shrimp... she had 5 shrimp will vegetables... she rated it a 2, it was 24 dollars... the Barata salad was good I rated it a 4.5... the biscuits were good a 4, and the Brussels sprouts were deep fried in canola oil.. talking about inflammatory and bad for you.. I gave it a 3.. they were dry.. pomegranate seeds and maple syrup would have improved the taste but beep fried in canola oil... horrible The service was good.. the food was over priced and not that good as a whole. We were on a road trip to lake Powell and stopped in at St George for the night. We stayed at the Advenire hotel ( wonderful), in the hotel is Wood Ash Rye. It's the best restaurant we've ever eaten at in all of Utah! Creative menu with something for everyone. The menu is meant to be shared, that's a good thing because I loved every item that came out. Stayed at the hotel here and this review is based on our experience with the bar and to-go service. We didn't sit down and eat here, but did order a couple drinks from the bar to take up with us. Food and drinks are unsurprisingly pricey, but I just got a local beer from the can that was fine. Wife got a tea since they actually had loose leaf teas in metal canisters. This is where things did get dicey, but at least the bartender took care of the problems we ran into. My wife and I are both picky about our teas, so we could immediately tell that the iced (pre-brewed) was WAAAYYY over-steeped. Bartender did warn us beforehand that they normally can't swap it out after we take it up to the room, but we asked nicely and he did make an exception. Not only did he swap it out for the hot tea, he went ahead and just gave me the leaves in a basket without starting the steeping in the hot water in the small kettle it also comes with. So we could tailor it ourselves and get the right steep. It was a LOT of leaves in the basket, which probably explains why the teas taste so bitter. So, moral of the story is that it's nice a fancy bar also (unexpectedly) has a decent loose leaf tea selection. Most folks don't care, but the tea-shaped heart wants what it wants, LOL. Still, if you're a tea connoisseur (some would say tea snob, lol) like my wife and I, might want to plan accordingly. My wife also grabbed a turkey and rice soup for a snack. I had a bite and very flavorful. Maybe more broth and less hearty than I would have preferred but no worries. read more

Wood Ash Rye is such a wonderful oasis of culinary craftsmanship in the weird desert of St. George where not a lot of high end cooking exists. My lovely girlfriend and I dressed up nice and enjoyed handmade biscuits with salt and butter on top! Delightful spicy chicken wings! And gorgeous Duck Tacos! My only regret is that we were too full when dessert came around. I would've loved to cap my meal with some milk and cookies. Next time for sure. The ambience and decor is awesome! Unfortunately, the service is lacking. Someone needs to train them better on what customer service means. We stood at the hostess station for at least 5 min with multiple workers walking past us with zero recognition. We were finally seated and service was sooo slow even though there were only 2 other tables in the entire restaurant. We would have given fewer stars but the food and drinks were pretty good. We had the brisket hash and biscuits and gravy. The brisket hash is where it's at. So flavorful and delicious. The biscuits and gravy were good but would have been better hot. They came out cold. Unfortunately we sat for the next 15 minutes, no one talked or acknowledged us. This was strange because it was a calm Monday night and the restaurant wasn't even that busy. We made eye contact with workers, and even the manager. Nothing.. so we decided not to spend our money on a business that can't even greet their guests for 15 minutes. Ambiance and environment is trendy. The hotel bar is a cool idea and the open kitchen is nice. Decided to try out the bar area after dining in the restaraunt a couple days ago. Jake took good care of us even though they got busy a couple times and the wait was longer than we expected, but they were doing their best. Tried the wings and they're worth getting. Had a problem with the martini, but Jake quickly remedied that to our satisfaction. Manhattan was meh, but they were out of my favorite vermouth so that made a difference for my taste. Also had to try the chocolate tier and it was worth trying especially if you like a lot of rich chocolate. My preference is still the buttermilk pie though. That's some of what I remember that we have tried, but I want to taste the whole menu. This is my favorite place in St. George right now. I left a review four years ago, and W.A.R. has been through many changes, but it's somehow even better. i've gone a few times in the last month or so, and really wanted to get a sense of the new and changing menu with family and friends. Wow. Impressed. They're really doing it, and they're doing it consistently. Shout out to an exceptional server who has helped us a couple of those times, Cassey I believe (spelling?) was her name. On one occasion, one of the dishes we ordered just didn't work for the person I was sharing the meal with, and both our server and the chef were very gracious, and they simply took it off the bill no questions asked. That was last night and I think I want to go back tonight, lol. Good luck, guys, you're doing an outstanding job. Whoever the new chef is, give him a raise and never let him go. For the most part this meal was great and the service was good as well. We did have a couple hiccups. We tried a lot from the menu. Brussel sprouts were amazing and so was the bread with jam and the carrots. The potatoes were pretty good as well. We also got the beef Wellington and 14 oz steak. The beef Wellington came as what I called deconstructed and not at all what we were expecting. We asked for medium rare and got very rare. I was a guest at the hotel and had both dinner and breakfast - as other reviews state this place is just odd. It has all the elements to make it seem like it would be a great experience. It looks beautiful inside and the menu appears mouth watering at first glance. Dinner menu - the duck tacos were messy you had to build them yourself, the meat isn't pre shredded that was a bit confusing and again messy to put together. A few other plates we had like the pasta and carrots, lots of seasoning and rich not in a good way. Breakfast was more bizarre - the food that came out didn't match what the menu said in the description, and the chicken for the fried chicken sandwich wasn't white and juicy it came out more like a chicken fried steak....I don't know I'm stumped I gave this place two shots and I won't be back sadly. read more
