The appeal of this place is you can get late night skewers and eats in a sorta unique environment. You enter and are surrounded by lights and projector scenes and you can squirrel away in a little booth compartment. It's meant to try to replicate some places in China- it doesn't quite succeed but it at least feels cute, tho a little dingy. You order by scanning a QR code and then the food is brought and skewers you order are haphazardly dumped onto a plate that sits over some candles, all mixed together. You get a container to put your extra sticks. After delivering food they don't really check on you and you go up to pay at the front. The thing I felt could be the most improved is that the plate used to keep the skewers warm is entirely ineffective. They cook the skewers in the back and put them there, but they still get cold and are unappetizing after a bit, especially if half the candles under your plate are out. A little tiny adjustable grill or warmer at each table would be best, but instead it just feels a bit cheap. You can add your own seasoning from containers at the table. I actually liked the eggplant dish with rice much better than any of the skewers. I've visited a few times and it's always a great experience when with friends. Lots of variety, delicious eats, fun videos, and karaoke lyrics on the walls. They have bright lights while the room is pretty dark. There's only a few tables so if you're coming in on a weekend late that you might have a wait and need to join the waitlist. I love that they have a scannable menu and you can order directly through online. It's a great late night spot when you're having a few drinks or just grabbing some food with friends until the late night. The service is great and they're pretty quick once you order. I always love to have beef and lamb and enoki wrapped in bacon as well as the cucumbers. They have a few drinks on the menu, but for me it's usually a night after. We tried a variety: pork belly, chicken, beef, lamb, chicken skin, fish cake, and the cucumbers and totaled $80 for three. The issue was with the environment. It was dark, noisy, and so stuffy, and the lack of air flow was so uncomfortable. Not only was it hot, there were mosquitos biting our ankles as we ate! I used to love this place after few years ago but not so much anymore. The quality of the food has just gotten so bad. It's like the cook always forgets one or two ingredients, and a different dish will come out bland every time you come. The flavor is always off now, sometimes nonexistent. Half the time you're just eating dry, unseasoned meat. I won't bother ranting about the super long wait times and the poor service too; those haven't ever changed in the years I've been coming and probably never will. But the drop in food quality is the biggest disappointment. I go here about once a month (3 times in the last month), and I've finally come to accept the fact that the food just won't ever be as good as a few years back, and it's time to look for a better alternative. Everything you order comes out cooked so it's nice that you don't have to wait for the skewers to cook at your table like other places. My group ordered the crispy pork appetizer, jellyfish cucumber and marinated cucumbers. All were delicious that we ordered multiple plates of them. As for the skewers we got the chicken, beef, lamb, squid, bacon wrapped enoki, bean curd and fried chicken skin. All were cooked to perfection and none of them were tough or chewy. They have different powders on the table that you can put on your plate to accompany the skewers. They are priced pretty fairly with each order being about $6. My group was there for 4 hours and each one of us paid about $260 for a party of 7. We liked that this place was opened late and was a chill environment. What an interesting restaurant experience! Xinjiang BBQ is located in a tiny plaza that has a good amount of parking as well. The plaza is initially pretty hard to locate while driving on the street so just be on the lookout. The decor is really interesting as well. It gives somewhat of a *nightclub* type of vibe and, for some reason, there is a super large projector in the front of the restaurant that's showing random messages that people in the restaurant can send in via a google form QR code. Just really odd, but I'm not complaining - it's kind of cool actually too, the more I think about it. The service is quick and the food comes quicker. You order via a QR code at your table and the ordering site is very easy to use. It's perfect, since we could order skewers throughout the meal, instead of all at once. The main skewers that we got were the beef and pork belly. The prices are very reasonable as well, going for about $1.50 per skewer. I also highly recommend getting the cucumber salad! It's a big portion for a reasonable price and it has a very clean and fresh taste, allowing for a good contrast between the saltiness of the meat. Overall, I had a great time and really just had an ~interesting~ experience here. A lot of aspects of this restaurant were very odd to me, but I still enjoyed it and had fun. Arrived here pretty late on a Saturday night since my friend said it closes at 4am! I miss those pre-covid restaurant days where we were able to go to HK style cafes at 2-3am and have a post drunken meal. This place scratches the itch somewhat! We came with a party of 6 at about 2am and ordered a few items on the menu. Chicken skin came crispy and tasty. Protein such as beef tongue, beef skewers and lamb skewers already tasted pretty good for our drunken state. The place has some crazy interior design and tables are oddly aligned but enough to enjoy with a group of friends. Overall food and service was pretty good. Its always great to see the different visuals they have on the projects inside the restaurant (I notice that they have different environments every time I visit, so its always something new when I go). This place is pretty nice for people who don't really want to interact too much with servers/staff since all the ordering is done through your phone. The staff will bring your food, but other than that there's very little interaction with you and servers. Although this is a skewer place with lots of different options for meat, I would highly recommend their cucumber salad! My friends and I go through at least two plates when we go. Mainly the skewers which were tasty but all too much of the same. The chicken wings were great, I recommend those. I would also get the lamb soup with bits of noodle. The texture was great. The stir fried clams were terrible and full of sand. It was like exfoliating your teeth and we just had to send it back. Flavor of this was also very disappointing. They do have a fairly annoying projector with constant moving images that they warn can cause seizures. This one feels like a karaoke bar inside with all the lights and projectors, and the lamb porridge, while plain on first bite, actually works out in the end-- balances the stronger flavors. I work for a high end restaurant and this place is my #1 place to go with coworkers after a tiring shift. Being in hospitality, I can tell you, there's nothing wrong with this place. Some places need their guest to feel worshipped, this is not that kind of place. Let me explain: Tucked inside the most unassuming plaza, XinJiang BBQ is easily missed. Their bright neon sign is towards the back of the plaza so you can drive straight past the entire plaza and not see it. Thankfully, I usually come between 11PM-2AM so the lights are bright and helpful. The seating is done quickly and without the traditional hospitality flare. They know you're here to drink, be loud, and stuff your face with skewers. Their main focus is to get you seated so that you can enjoy your evening with your friends. So why did I mention hospitality? I know Yelp elites tend to have objects lodged in their posteriors regarding "hospitality". As someone who has worked in the industry for over 15+ years, I can tell you there's a time and a place for hospitality. When you want to chug soju and cram skewers into your mouth, you know you're not there for expert friendly service. They bring you what you want and that's it. Food is great and only gets better the more you drink! My party's favorite will always be the cucumber salad side dish. Garlicy, savory, served chilled. Refreshing when you're going heavy on the meat and alcohol. Intestines are crispy, lamb skewers are seasoned with the perfect amount of cumin. You MUST try the oysters and clams! Loveeeed my first experience dining at XinJiang. My friends drove from San Diego, and they liked XinJiang near their place, so we had to try the one in LA!
