I bought 2 crabs this afternoon. I specifically ask the counter help to make sure they had all the claws because that is what all the kids are looking for. The counter help gave me a count up to 10 to verify they were all there. I should not have trusted these guys. When I got home I realized when cleaning them they were missing 2 claws. This review is only for the deli inside 99 Ranch Market. If you have been looking for a place to get Taiwanese breakfast, look no further than your local 99 Ranch Market!!! Inside the market is a deli that serves food similar to that served at Shau May with the pick and choose 2-4 items dish. I don't know the words in Chinese, but they serve the normal Taiwanese breakfast food like soy milk, congee (porridge) with pork and preserved egg ($1.99), cruller (the long bread stick thing), EGG PANCAKE!!! (my favorite for $1.69), and steamed bun with barbecue pork. They only serve breakfast from 9 to about 11. I would try to get there by 10:30 since they might run out of stuff by then and might not want to make anymore since they would be getting ready for lunch at that time. They have some tables on the side too so you can enjoy your Taiwanese breakfast while scratching off some California Lottery Scratchers. You never know, you could win it big! read more

I love 99 Ranch for the constant Manager's specials that they always have. I come here for the produce because I will find fresh apples all the time at good prices. They don't have a good selection of organic produce, so if you're into that, be sure to look elsewhere. They have a fish section too, where the people will actually fry the fish for you. It's super convenient because you can remove the head and get the fish cleaned all at one place without an additional cost. Really nice for just picking up already made fish for dinner! They also have a bakery in the market. The bread isn't the best I've had but they have reasonably priced bread and for the location and convenience, I continue to support Bread Farm. This location also has a food section where people can buy pre made bento boxes for just $5. The portions are really good and is perfect for on the go meals. The quality isn't too great, but it's cheap and convenient! 99 Ranch can be pretty busy on certain days, especially in the evenings. I suggest going there before the rush because they always just have two or three registers open, which slows down the process a lot. I seem to always wait there for quite a bit until it's my turn. Join their rewards programs for points. You get $10 back every $1,000 you spend, which isn't the best deal, but it's better than nothing. read more

This place was a godsend when it first opened. It greatly reduced the distant journeys my papa used to take to West Covina to get the ingredients he needed to make certain dishes. They've got a wide selection of Asian fare, as well as your run-of-the-mill items you'd find at a Vons or Albertsons. The best thing about this place is that they sell fresh fish that they will fry for you in-store! That meant our house wouldn't smell of fish for days anymore. There's also a locksmith in-store as well as a little food place. Food's pretty good there, but there's a food court just down the way with a much better selection (not to mention the other restaurants in the area). And of course, one can't forget the big tanks of live fish and bins of shellfish. My sister loves tormenting the crabs, and I made her stop yesterday and she scowled at me and told me the crabs don't have nervous systems. Frankly, this new remodel makes it look way nicer than the 99 Ranch of my childhood. I also think someone in the comments was complaining that it's too cold? Uh, well, it's better than it being too warm. You have all your traditional goods, meat section, seafood section, bakery and other fresh goods. There's a ton of check out lines and it moves pretty quickly for how congested it is most of the time. The staff mostly speaks English if you aren't sure where something is and need to ask. So i just got back from taking my grandma to the market ... when i walked back to my car i noticed a dent in my door...whoopee... =( any who on to my review.. 99 ranch always has whatever i need if im cooking asian food. Their produce is cheap! usually way cheaper than any american super market. They have swimming fish and fish thats dead which is always smelly. i dont understand how those asian ladies pick up fish and toss them around with their bare hands! Dont you mind that your hands now smell fishy and later you need to dig into your purse to get your wallet, pay, and get back into your car without washing your hands? sigh. somethins fishy.. stuff is not that clean there. I understand why this location is receiving such low rating. There is zero social distancing at the register. Before I got a chance to load my purchases onto the cart (I bough a lot of items and it takes time to put things back in the cart) another customer is right next to me bagging her items in a bag. The cashier should assist customers with bagging before they ring up another person. There is also a bagging person in front of the register standing around doing nothing. First of all.. I been to this 99 ranch market many times so I am not writing this review base on a one-time visit. How can this market have "A" rating posted on the front entrance when it has a "C" rating at the Meat section? I was there at around 8:30pm and one of the butcher was cleaning/wiping the meat cooler display. He was spraying 409 and wiping the entire meat section glass with a single sheet of paper towel. As I waited to be serviced, I watched him finish wiping the glass and gone over to the sink to the sink to wash his hands... so I thought to myself, wow they are pretty sanitary until I spotted him washing his hands with the latex gloves on.. Ever since they had renovated the market, it's been a better place to shop. Before, it was dingy and dirty, and now cleaner and organized (at least to me)... My favorite is the Asian Kitchen - the little kitchen corner next to the bakery. They have their Chinese round bento boxes that are $5 a meal and you get a lot of food with that. Different proteins range from chicken, pork chops, pork belly and fish. Anytime I'm too lazy or busy to cook dinner, their bento box serves me well. One star off: Not a fan of their bakery - overpriced lil pastries and drinks. Their tea machine always seems to be breaking down and hardly ever fixed. Disorganized too - seems like they can't ever figure out who's suppose to be ringing up as cashier. I like the old bakery - at least each woman in that section knew what to do. read more

Sons GF and my daughter decided they wanted to make Thai food for dinner so off to 99 Ranch we went. Being Chinese would help here because it is difficult for us Anglos to find the correct ingredient when we get the urge to make Asian food. We spent almost an hour searching for what we needed and marveling at the array of exotic foods. This place has had a makeover since I was here last and it is much nicer. I use to know this store inside and out, but on a recent visit I saw that they're remodelling! How exciting. I guess they have to compete with the Asian markets popping up nearby. They have new prepared foods up front, a bakery in front, East West bank. Produce: Usually very good produce, but it seems to last a bit too long in my fridge. I'll tell you now it isn't organic. Meat: Fresh fish is great, the red meats I'm wary of since once I got a nice red steak that once I cut into before cooking was brown. SAY WAHT? The chicken is obviously horomone fed as it is double the size of Trader Joes organic chicken. Hey, more bang for your buck! The have extensive frozen asian foods and canned goods. Employees are not helpful or very nice, but they're Asian and I SADLY expect that. Customers are the same, they'll just block the way and think its okay when there is a line of people trying to just GET INTO the store. The cashiers really need to stop THROWING my products to the bagging person after scanning them at the register. They are really unfriendly and rude. On occasion if they see you taking your ATM card out of your wallet to slowly they will reach over and take the ATM card out of your hand without saying a word and swiping the card for you. Then they violently turn the ATM reader over to you for you to enter your pin. As soon as you do, they start going through the Cashback options and amount confirmation screens on their own. I do not need them to deal with my ATM card purchase options! If you do ANYTHING the cashier don't like they will at a minimum give you the biggest SIGH! read more

I come here a lot to buy stable vegetables/fruits/meat/fish. I find everything here to be fresh, but not the best looking. That's okay, I don't buy things so they can look pretty. I buy them so I can eat them. I only like to buy fish where I can see the entire fish. If I can only see a portion of the fish, all packaged up and shrink wrapped, my immediate thought is "not fresh". That is not the case here. All the fish are laid out on ice like I'm used to (I'm from Taiwan) and I can see how clear their eyes are, or how fresh they look. I also like buying meat here. It's so much cheaper than American grocery stories like Vons or Ralph's. They also sell cuts you don't normally find in American markets, although don't try getting briskets here. I've never seen them sell briskets. Ever. I'm okay with the snack selection here. They always have everything I want so I have no complaints. The cashiers here I find all have a bit of attitude, but that can be easily ignored. Just swipe your card and hand it to them and let them thoroughly check your identity and you'll be fine. Let me tell you , I have been to so many markets around the nation and 99 ranch still brings me back for the most variety of hardcore Asian food . (Though Canada's TNT is better I'm sorry to say ) From countless snacks to cheap seafood,ethnic fruit ( jackfruit, durian , dragon fruit anyone ? ) to generally fresh veggies , this is considerably a good Asian supermarket . As for sanitation&&service ... Well come on when are Asian supermarkets free of reeking odor , rundown restrooms and apathetic employees ? But seriously , 99 ranch does a better job than most other supermarkets around ... Don't buy these Taiwanese snack/desert! The filling it only tiny bit and taste less and it probably was sitting for quite a while, it's hard, a lot of bread with little filling and just not worth the $$$! I got two, one with red bean and the other with cream, it seemed like they might water down the filling... will not buy these again! This place shares its lot with a lot of food places and food courts. Parking is either a hit or miss. During the weekends you will most likely not be able to find parking spots. Also, customer service is horrible here as well. Every time I come here, I feel like the employees are trained not to say anything. The cashiers can be really rude. An experience I had with a cashier was when I gave them my keys to scan my rewards card, she just threw my keys down like it was groceries without a care in the world. After scanning all my groceries, she doesn't even tell me what the total was. After everything is said and done, she doesn't even say "Thank you for shopping at 99 ranch or something along those lines", she just simply gave us a cold blank stare. However, I am giving this place 2 stars because of the remodel. It looks a lot better than what I had grown up to. Everything is easy to find to an extent, however, because it is predominantly asian things can get hectic, and people can be fairly rude. Last tip: When driving around in the parking lot beware of drivers not paying attention to cross traffic and drivers who don't yield to pedestrians and don't stop at the provided stop signs in front of the store. read more

Yup, 3-star average is about right. I don't ignore the fact that I live in LA and privileged enough to be within 20-min driving distance from a major Asian supermarket. If I lived in mid-west, this would be a 5-star review. But the truth is competition makes the consumer more discerning, and that is what is happening here The Arcadia 99-Ranch is actually better than the one in San Gabriel Focus Plaza where the food is always constantly on the brink of rotting and the customer service is non-existent. (C'mon, all you expats who have lived in China, go visit and you will relive some painful memories!) But the Arcadia 99-Ranch has some very distinct points of improvement that could make this the best location in East LA. Here are my $0.02: 1. Freezing!!! Seriously, if it's hot outside on a summer day, this is a plus. But any other times, you should go in with a winter coat. I swear it's ALWAYS around 50 degrees in there, not just the vegetables or frozen section. Really big waste of energy and really not necessary. 2. Pet peeve - pushy Chinese natives who don't understand the concept of taking a number and staff who don't reinforce it. I am standing there with a number and watched 3 ladies go right up to the guy and he takes their order. I finally bust out the Chinese and ask if he was still calling out numbers, since it stopped at 75 and I am holding 99. Really, it's a cultural thing but I think it should be enforced. 3. No Express Line- Chinese people like their grocery shopping, I get it. But it's super annoying that they don't at least turn their customer service counter into a 10 or 15-item or less line. I sometimes forget stuff and want to buy 2 items for a dish and end up turning around and walking back out because the lines looked like it's at least a 25-30 min wait. Seriously, the lines can get like the drive-thru line at In-n-Out. That's it. Other than that, Arcadia 99 Ranch is just a star below the 99 Ranch Nogales, which in my opinion if you are going into the heart of Chinese suburbia, it's worth a visit. STORE: great place to get asian ingredients and items; esp love the veggies i can get there. they can fry fish for you but it may be difficult to get exactly wat you want w/the language barrier. BAKERY: after recently visiting jj's, i realized i'd rather come here. although the selection isn't as wide, i think the value is better...with still plenty of yumminess to choose from. just the other day i got a humongoid =p pineapple milk bun for less than $2. i also took notice of their creme puffs. okay, so the filling isn't the custard heaven of beard papa's, but at 90 cents a piece and a choice of vanilla or red bean, i found a new friend!! Since it's Memorial Day & I wanted to do some more cooking, I was at a loss as to what supermaket I could go that was open & not too crowded. Since I had already been cooking BBQ the days prior, I thought for variety's sake I could cook some Asian food! Off to 99 Ranch I went. Although quite a few of my Asian friends & parents' friends have griped about the prices at this market compared to other companies, they do have competitive prices on select items; you just have to know what to get & price shop. This market also carries brands that possess a higher quality than other markets' offerings. Case in point: a particular brand of soy sauce (w/ lower sodium) vs. another brand of soy sauce (w/ higher sodium) @ another market. I'm happy to report that parking on this particular day was a breeze and the lines, not too long. The parking setup is less of a headache than the branch in San Gabriel. I'm acknowledging that though some of the cashiers may usually not be patient & are really just looking to get the job done, my cashier today was pleasant & efficient; she even smiled as she handed me my change. I made haste home & made Shoyu ramen w/ green onions & fish cake. (What I mean by ramen are the hand sliced Japanese noodles not the blasphemous chemically frozen ones in a packet). The cost? Half of what it would cost to eat a bown of ramen @ a restaurant (though it can be nice to have ramen @ a restaurant sometimes so I'm not knocking it). Really, picking out the ingredients & making it myself was half the pleasure. The other half of the pleasure comes from savoring what I just made. Asian Kitchen has this amazing wrap dish as my friend simply put it--a Chinese burrito. It was delicious with the right amount of veggie to meat and peanut sauce. I only come to this 99 ranch when I'm desperate and in a hurry. It is hard to find parking and the store is old and dirty. They are always running out of certain produce, such as cilantro. The quality is hit and miss. I got garlic last time and it was all really old and turning color. Their sauce, instant noodle, and snacks selections are also pretty limited. They don't have fresh food like the 99 ranch on Valley inside Focus Plaza. read more

My boyfriend and I love stopping here to do our grocery shopping after our hikes in the mountains. Parking here can be a problem, mostly because nobody here seems to know how to park! (Insert bad asian driving joke...it's ok, I'm asian, so I can make that joke). There's always someone (or two) people blocking traffic doing a 50 million point turn to either get in or out of a parking spot. The store itself is very, very clean and sometimes reminds me of an asian costco in that there are stations where ladies cook and let you sample the food. on more than one occasion, this has led my boyfriend and I to pick up stuff we weren't even the market for. The hot food station at the front of the store is pretty darn awesome. The bento boxes are pretty good for food on the fly and the "run bing" was awesome. read more

This market is one of the better 99 Ranch Markets. Its cleaner, its friendlier, its more spacious, and it has more items to choose from. And it has a good bakery attached to it. It has plenty of parking in the lot and its near a food court with Shiao Mei Take out. One of the better Shiao Mei's around here. Watch out on the weekends though, gets packed and then parking becomes a nightmare! They have a lot more vegetables to choose from. They took out the 99 Ranch Card. read more

This 99 Ranch is pretty good, not my favorite but it's the closest to where I live. The produce section is awesome in this market, they have a a great selection of veggies and fruits, especially the harder to find ones like lychee and rambutan. I also like how they have an aisle dedicated to cookware and bowls; they had some cute blue rabbit soup bowls last time I was there. They also have a great section of premade items like babaofan (dessert rice with red bean) which I love. And as with all Asian bakeries the bread is legit (located on the right as you walk in). Another plus is the huge amount of parking available for this store so you shouldn't have trouble finding a spot. The only thing I don't like about this location is the fishy smell that emanates from the back of the store because of the fish tanks and fresh seafood. read more

Whenever I pass through the 626, I always stop by this Ranch 99 location. It's closer to the 210 and it isn't as congested with hoards of impolite Asian drivers in the San Gabriel location (Focus Plaza.) The parking lot gets full quickly. I don't even bother; I automatically go to the spots closest to the intersection corner of Duarte/Golden West. Thank goodness they remodeled the inside of the supermarket. It used to be terribly dingy looking. (Like the food court area next door. Le sigh.) Anyways...this is SPECIFICALLY for the deli specialty section, next to the bakery. I always get the "Ren Bing" aka Taiwanese burrito. They are reasonably priced with the quality. I don't know many places which make them. The cashier said they sell them at the Rowland Height's location on Gale. Anyways, the "Ren Bing" wrap is usually made well. I've had the one at 168 supermarket and it was too doughy, tasted like pure starch. Anyways, I fill them up with red yeast meat, curry vegetables, egg, peanuts, sauce, and EXTRA CILANTRO. I usually eat half an order at a time. The ladies are nice enough to distinguish each order with the different sides of aluminum foil (silver or gold side.) The railroad bento boxes aren't half bad to eat. In comparison to some Taiwanese eateries/cafes, I don't feel as guilty grabbing them. There's plenty of flavor and not too "Westernized". They have a wide variety of choices that are SAVORY, unlike some Ranch 99s which have the basic spare ribs or unagi rice bowl on rotation. My favorite has been the braised pork belly. The pork belly portion is pretty generous. (Especially with the fatty goodness. Hehe.) They paired it off with two types of pickled vegetables. read more

If you've never been to 99 ranch get ready to be blown away by products and ingredients not typically found in your average everyday market. However for me, this is typical and average. Most of the ingredients I use daily. Boring right? This is the only market that I send my students to. When studying international cuisine most if not all of the classes take "field trips" here. Can you imagine the look on their faces? Classic. Black chicken, chicken feet, tongue of all kinds, variety of seafood, durian albeit frozen, dried ingredients like mushrooms and seaweed, fresh veggies, sake and cooking wines, etc. Prices reflect average costs across the board so be on the look out for those sale ads and stock up on those reduced priced items. read more
