BEWARE: The self serve frozen hot pot bar has rotten fillings! I was skeptical of the frozen self serve hot pot buffet bar. It looked sort of unhygenic but I bought it anyway. Well I bit into one and the filling was all rotten and sour, tasted like dirty chemicals. It ruined an entire hot pot. Anyway, the rest of the market is OK and you can get some good deals here. I would say stay away from their fresh breakfast foods (Egg Crepe was way overcooked, and Daikon cake was overcooked and dry). Great place for Asian groceries. It is much newer and bigger than other 99 Ranch Markets nearby, namely San Gabriel or Alhambra. If those are closer to you, then I still think it's more worth it to drive to this one. Everything seems fresher and more selection here. Also, people seem more friendly here, they actually say 'excuse me' and 'thank you', much more civilized than in 'crude' Alhambra. I found that many veggies and fruits are actually cheaper than Vons or Ralphs as well. I found apples for as little as $.69/lb here on occasion while Vons is $.99/lb at the lowest, and more than that on average, and then comparing the canned foods and other produce and meat, there's no comparison, 99 Ranch is the better market. read more

Be careful! They may charge an item twice! That's our first visit to the store on our way home for convenience. A bag of Greenmax Oatmeal was one of the items we bought. After returning home, I accidentally found it was charged twice -- with about 10 items in between the two charges. How could that happen? This one was easy to spot, since it's priced $4.99 and many of the daily food items in the store are much less than that. Never shop at this store again. read more

The 1-star is because of their decent produce section, but that's where the pros end for me. First of all, parking is a nightmare, which I don't actually blame on them. There's just too many businesses on that strip mall for the relative size of the lot. But the real adventure is when you finally do find an elusive spot. If I could give negative stars for customer service I would. For the record, I'm not a high maintenance customer at all. I know I'm pretty much in for the real Hunger Games going into an Asian Market. But if you're going to have a service station for seafood, can a girl get some, you know, service??? Unlike other people, I actually took a number, like a good customer, and waited my turn. There were only 2 ahead of me. I stood there patiently for at least 10 minutes, making eye contact with their several staff as they helped other people. I was next, but imagine my surprise when one of them advanced the number board 5 people past me, took another customer, and when I looked at him and politely spoke up saying that I was next, he just sneered, shrugged his shoulders and proceeded to help another customer (in Mandarin) that I was certain got there after me. At that moment one of their guys just finished, who helped the customer right before me. He saw my exchange with the other guy, but rather than help or let me know that I'd be next, he just pointedly stared at me, while walking past, and disappearing to some unknown corner. Completely infuriated and disgusted by how I was treated, I proceeded to get in line to pay for the other things I came in for, left, and went to another store for what I needed from the counter. By the way, I also wasn't impressed by their cashiers. They sort of just bark at you, and act like you're inconveniencing them for making a purchase. If not for the fact that this is the closest Asian market to me, I'd probably never come here again. I'd rather make the extra effort and go to the nearest 168 Market. But now and then I may have to pop in for an ingredient at a self-serve aisle that I won't find at my neighborhood western market. I just better make sure to go when they've just opened, and that I don't have to speak to their generally rude and unhelpful staff. read more

This place can definitely be scary if you go to the section where they have all the live animals you just want to make your pets.. Sorry, these guys won't last very long in your aquarium. They have a great selection of asian snacks and anything else you need. The Tupperware here is much cheaper than it is at Ralph's and they have the same good brands too. Super rude and horrible service at fish department!! Every time when I go to the fish department and ask for a live fish or salmon fish, those old Chinese guys looks extremely rude and impatient, they even sometimes threaten you through their eyes and want you to shut up, just grab whatever they are ready for you, instead of picking one you want. Sigh, such rude service attitude, does your manger know that? I guess they may have mental issues, or why did treat a client in such a rude way who was actually nice and polite to you? I prefer this Ranch 99 location because the crowds are manageable and they have a decent selection of produce, noodles, meat, and sales. Yes, the other location is larger and in a more popular shopping center with stores such as Daiso or Boba Avenue (highly recommend their Hokkaido milk tea!), but the parking and traffic in the store can get so crazy. I do love the 99 cents/lb chicken drumstick specials and other veggie deals. Wouldn't recommend their salmon sashimi (not fresh). AU 79 is on the opposite size of the plaza, FYI. Their "food court" option is a separate location a few stores down (few minutes walk) and has Daikokuya at the same level of quality to the Little Tokyo location! read more

This review is for the Fish Dept again. The Guy who speaks Mandarin only did a horrible job of cleaning the fish (a ribbon belt fish) that my mom bought there today. 99 Ranch Markets are great for your exotic asian food needs. They huge asian grocery stores in short. They have a ton of imported asian food, plus fresh seafood and meats. They also sell a ton of asian cookware, including Hot Pots. If you know what you need, it's easy to get around, otherwise, bring an asian friend that speak fluent chinese...kinda hard to explain certain things in english to them. Overall it's a good place when you want to find asian goods. read more

Clean, lots of rooms between the aisles (compared to the older Von's or Ralph's) and great selection of Asian goods. What also makes this Market a place to check out is the bakery, Bread Farm. Great selection of freshly baked asian pastries and goodies. Another reason is the Produce and Seafood section. Plenty of fresh seafood and product to select from. This 99 ranch market will suit most of your Asian grocery needs. It even has a little Asian bakery inside. Their meat and vegetables seem to be fresh. I love coming here to get a bottle of ramune or Chinese yogurt cause those are my favorite snacks and this location sells them for cheap. The one thing I do not have a liking towards is how the lines for the registers are designed because they are kind of hidden. The lines go into the isles and are oftentimes confusing to figure out which line belongs to which register. read more

There's always sales going on. You can find cheap produce & lots of freezer items that are discounted. The vegetables are more on the more dirtier side compared to Trader Joes, Whole Foods & Sprouts. As long as you wash it, you'll be good! Most of the items are much cheaper too. Everything is generally pretty organized and stocked. They do get very crowded on the weekends and lines get long! Parking is easy in a large lot and also since people are always coming just for 15-20 mins to get groceries. I'm here shopping for food pretty much each month, each time I visit my gf's parents house in arcadia. The ranch 99 here is basically like any typical one you'd come across, but what is particularly interesting is that it is cheaper to buy meat here than next door at pavilions. it might just be from the past experiences I've had, but buying steaks here seem to be better buys(?) Besides that, the fish frying/cleaning service is great for quick meals, and the selection of items are bit limited since the place is more suited as a general asian supermarket. read more

The staff is usually friendly, and provides great service. The other patrons in the store look at me like I'm crazy, or lost. "I know what I'm doing here. It's ok" I like getting my fish fried here. They have several types of fish to choose from; Tilapia, Catfish, Pompano, Milkfish, live crabs, live lobster, live clams... a seafood lovers dream. For no extra cost, they will cut up the fish, clean it, and fry it up ready to eat upon arrival. Also they have all the hard to find ingredients necessary to make good Asian cuisine at home. If I'm craving udon, or ramen, or chicken satay, and dont have the money to eat out, or its late at night and nothings open... This 99 Ranch isn't too shabby. Considering where it's located, there usually isn't a hard task in getting parking. It does get a little busy in there at times, but I do like the location... being next to a food court and restaurant and all. This supermarket is a little on the small side, but even so the parking is usually horrendous. The selection of meats and vegetables is pretty standard, it's a little on the small side. They don't have short ribs for instance that isn't frozen. The market is a little bit older and doesn't have new products to choose from. This is one of the worst 99 Ranch ever. If they don't want to go out of business they need a new manager. The line always has 10 to 20 people waiting because they don't open enough cashiers. You have to stand in line in the aisles so this blocks people from trying to get items. I see numerous people leaving theirs carts or meat or seafood because they are tired of waiting. Shopping at Ranch 99 is an adventure. The aisles are narrow (because there's so stuff in the store) and on weekends it's as packed as Disneyland mainstreet in July. But oh there's so much stuff in that store, and oh are the prices good. You want Taro Root, Star Fruit or Durian? This is the place. Ube ice cream? Yes. Fresh seafood? They run so much volume through that store that you have no choice - fresh is your only choice. The staff is friendly, though communication in English is often basic. But if you want Asian food groceries and dirt cheap produce, Go to Ranch 99. If you want a rice cooker or an electric hot water pot, Ranch 99 is it. Just about any Chinese item one could name is there. The also have a great selection of other ethnic Asian foods (Japanese, Filipino, Korean, etc). Parking is horrible, the feel while inside bustling, but when I want Asian groceries, dishes, or small appliances, I just can't stay away. Give it a try. read more

This is the worst 99 Ranch Market. I knew that their staffs were not friendly, helpful, and could be very rude. I thought that their customer service had improved because when I shopped at the bakery and the ready-to-go hot food section around noon today, the staffs were nice and friendly. But this is a wrong impression. When I checked out at Aisle Six, the cashier, Xiao Ling was extremely rude!!! She said something in some language, but her voice was very low, and I could not hear what she said or asked me. I nicely told her a few times, "I cannot hear you, could you please repeat what you just said?" She first told me that the total price was $80 something. But after she charged me for the third bag, she told me that the total price was $100 something. I was very confused. How could she charged me an additional $20 by giving me the third bag? I questioned her, "Didn't you just say that the total price is $80? Why it is over $100 now?" She raised up her voice, "Just look at the screen." Though I was confused, I didn't continue to ask her. Yet, she asked me for my ID card, because I needed to pay with my credit card. I showed her my ID. Then I stuck my credit card into the card reader machine. But she asked me to show her my ID again. I was like, "Didn't you just see my ID?" She replied back with anger, "I told you to show me both cards simultaneously." I just didn't get her point. I asked her back, "Didn't you just see my ID? Couldn't you remember my name!?" Then her temper went out of control. She yelled at me, "You told me to raise up the volume of my voice. Then I raised up my voice. But now you say that my attitude is bad?" At that moment, I replied back to her, "OK. I must report you to your manager. What is your name?" I asked her what her name was a few times, but she turned around and hid her name tag from me. A guy, probably the cashier's manager came to this check-out counter and asked Xiao Ling and me what happened. During the time I told him what happened, Xiao Ling argued with me. I told that manager, "I have to file a complaint. What's her name?" He pulled me to the customer service section and asked me what happened again. I told him that I asked Xiao Ling a few times what she tried to say because I could not hear her. Then I said that I asked Xiao Ling why the total price was $80, but after she added the third bag to the shopping list, the total price jumped up to over $100. The manager's attitude was at least very nice. He told me that could be some kind of misunderstanding. I asked him for that cashier's name again. During the conversation with the manager, I heard some other staff said behind me, "She has nothing to do, so she is filing a complaint." "I thought that she was a student, so she must be easy to bully." I didn't turn my back to see who said something rude, unprofessional, and disrespectful like that!!! Today is Sunday. Most of the supermarkets and department stores are full of customers. But this supermarket is an exception. The store had only some customers. Then another female staff asked me, "Do you need help? Don't you need to file a complaint? Why don't you file a complaint first, then you can check whether you miss something in your shopping bags." Seriously this was not a good customer service action. Plus, this female staff also said, "Oh. I didn't even know which cashier caused the trouble." That was very obvious, so they tried to cover up Xiao Ling's rude customer service treating the customers. When I walked over to Aisle Six again, Xiao Ling was gone. The male manager came back after a few minutes. I told him, "She must apologize to me." The male manager replied, "OK. But it is the manager's responsibility to apologize to you because we didn't train our staffs well." Even the Hispanic lady who helped me with packing the food was friendly, I can't believe that Xiao Ling and other staffs were so rude and mean. Because the staffs at the bakery and the hot food section and the male manager were still friendly, I am not giving no star to this 99 Ranch Market. I will still shop at this supermarket, but the executive team must train their staffs never to say things like above to their customers. read more

I bought a package of Tofu Strip Dau Hu Tuoi on August 26th at this store without looking at the expiration date. When I opened the package at home, the Tofu Strips were covered with mold and the expiration date on the package showed 9/22/15. I guess this market sell expired and spoiled foods. I am reviewing the small deli that is right next to the bakery section. The bento boxes in the bamboo crates are always delicious. The rice is cooked to perfection. This is also the only place where I know you can get 潤餅/Run Bing/Taiwanese burrito. It's pretty much the worst 99 Ranch in LA. The floors are disgusting, there are flies all over the fruit, and if you're within 50 feet of the meat and seafood section, it smells horrible. Some of the frozen food I bought looked like it had been thawed and refrozen, and there were patches of what looked like mold growing. Their prices may be cheap, but so is the San Gabriel branch. I sometimes find out how ridiculous they offer the price discount differently from other store, for example they mark the waffle on sale 2 for $3, you have to get exactly two same flavors to get that price, if you buy one vanilla , one chocolate flavor they won't give you on sale price which is very frustrating. 99 ranch also have a reward system, you earned one point for one dollar purchase, after 1000 points which means after spending $1000 you can get $10 reward, No kidding, how generous the store is, you are actually getting back 0.01%. read more

I wasn't going to write a review but now I have to voice my epiphany I was waiting at the fish counter to buy some live shrimp and taking pictures of live shrimp for Yelp when one of the gents behind the counter gave me a head nod to see if I needed help. I asked for 2 pounds of live shrimp and made some friendly small talk with him, meanwhile some old asian lady full of piss and vinegar was waiting for another gent to pick out her shrimp. When he packed hers up to hand to her, she waved him off and said "I don't want it give it to her, " and flicked my shoulder with her hand. If I had been paying attention to the going on around me instead of chatting with the fish monger I would have been prepared for her unprovoked aggression and tripped the old biddy but alas I wasn't. Gee people, don't you know you catch more flies with honey than vinegar. Was it my fault my fish monger was picking out the larger shrimp while hers wasn't because she was nasty to him. After I got home and cooked up the shrimp a huge smile floated accross my face. Yummm! Live shrimp is just so damn good. I cracked up and my family thought I was nuts because it just hit me that the pissy old lady just missed out on some amazing tasting shrimp. There is a God and he must love food. You don't have to be Asian to love this place. I keep coming back since the first time I visited it. It is super convenient and the following are the reasons why i like it so much. 1) it is located in my neighborhood, CONVENIENCE. 2) the prices are very affordable. 3) it's big enough to find everything you need (specially when you follow new recipes on pinteres LOL). 4) The meat selection, specially the seafood, is GREAT. Fresh meat & animals still alive....ya relax, I'm referring to fishes, crabs, etc. 5) if you want to avoid the smell in your kitchen of fried seafood, they fry it for you for FREE (from 10am-9pm)** 6) I love their fruits selection. Always fresh. 7) they have a bakery at the entrance and they offer a huge selection of bread and desserts. 8) there's always someone offering you a sample of anything you can imagine (food or drinks). 9) you can buy hot food to go. 10) if you sign with them to become a member, you get $ reward vouchers to spend in your future purchases. BUT like any other place, there are few things that are not that great....most employees don't speak English so It has been difficult (few times) to get a clear answer about "where to find an item on specific". Also, everything is marked on Chinese and at the bottom you see the tiny letters written in English so if you're in a rush, that could be a pain in your eyes ^_^ and finally, the parking lot is terrible. Despite the new renovations, this place still looks sort of bad and messy. In fact for some reason, I feel like it's dirtier and messier AFTER the renovations. Regardless, this is the place to come if you need somewhere close to shop for your Asian grocery necessities. I still prefer to shop at whole foods or pavilions for my produce and meat, but then again I like to eat organic and shop for groceries in nice environments where people don't push, shove, and talk obscenely loud. In general I tend to not like Chinese supermarkets very much. I don't understand why Chinese supermarkets are always so dirty and messy in comparison to Korean supermarkets. I used to like coming here to buy groceries. There was no one at the time in line at the seafood section, so I immediately went up to one of the employees. He told me with a bad attitude in Chinese, "GET A NUMBER THEN COME TO ME." What the F? There was no one in line waiting, it was the first time someone told me to get a F**King number when there was no one in sight waiting. Someone needs to tell that new ass employee (if he is new because it was my first time seeing him) we shouldn't need a F***ing number and speak in a better manner. I have pretty thick skin with people, but that guy got me upset that I wanted to write a damn review about him. I went there again today, and didn't want to get my damn fish because his pissy ass face was there.
