We just love this place. Not only the building is pretty cool, but the ambiance resembles an old world German tavern. lol. We love Peruvian food. Rosita, the owner is amazing. The wine list is long and they have good beer on tap. Burnt Ceasar rocks. Anticucho is my favorite. We had fried seafood platter it was delicious. Their ceviche is always on point. The food was not very good. The Lomo Saltado was very salty, the ceviche was raw and had no lemon, the seco de carne tasted a bit rancid. The service was fine but could have been better. They serve complimentary chips with creamy aji sauce to start, very delicious. For my entree I got the Lomito saltado - amazing flavor and meat was very tender. All day, everyday, one of my fave Peruvian spots. Normally, I'm a die-hard Lomo Saltado (steak sautéed in soy sauce served over rice, tomatoes, fries, and grilled onions) consumer, and while theirs is fantastic, my go-to dish here is the Ají de Gallina (shredded chicken over rice with this rich, delicious yellow sauce - not to be confused with aji amarillo spicy yellow sauce made from hucatay). It's warm and so filling, I never finish more than half, but it's just as good the next day! The ceviche Classico is always solid as a starter. Other dishes that are solid, Chaufa Camarones, Steak a Lo Pobre and the Grilled Caesar. Pro tip: make sure to order the three sauces on the side: array of house-made sauces to try. rocoto, aji amarillo, and huacatay -- aka Southern Cone Marigold or Peruvian black mint. These give a punch to any dish on the menu. The Amarillo is also served on complimentary crisps they bring out to the table. Drinks are beer/wine only including a delicious sangria. Ceviche was excellent, and so was the beet & arugula salad, fried bananas, and chocolate cake (my dining partner has a sweet tooth!) Minor criticism of the salad, I would have liked more beets and hazelnuts, as the salad was about 90% arugula. We opted to order the following: Causa Trio: A sampler of their seafood on mashed fried potatoes. It was tasty and didn't feel too fishy but it was a little pricey. Aji De Gallina: This shredded chicken dish was our favorite, very saucy, and flavorful and wasn't dry. I did like the generous portion that was given Lomito Saltado: We got an extra egg for an additional $2. It was a good portion. The fries were crispy and salty and there was tender pieces of beef. It was a little pink for my taste but otherwise, still a solid, traditional choice. Tuna Ceviche: The tuna was very fresh, little pieces of chili so be careful if you aren't a huge fan of spicy. I thought it was good but also this portion didn't feel like it was as big as the entrees. Free chips: These were really addicting. Very salty and topped with a spicy cheese sauce. We had to get more. They should sell these! Overall, good experience and great service. They are dog friendly and were accommodating with our requests. Let me start with the service. This place is very hospitable, they are on top of everything and so nice. I think it was the owner who served us. She took the time to give us some culture background on the food. Place is super clean. Now the best part of this review is the food. Wow!!!! So much flavor, I got the lomo saltado and it was perfectly seasoned, beef was so tender and the fries freshly made. We also had their ice cream, it was made from a fruit lucuma from Peru. Aji does many of the Peruvian classics so well, whether it's your classic Lomito Saltado (beef, onions, tomatoes with fries over rice), the popular Aji de Gallina (shredded chicken, creamy ají sauce, Parmesan cheese, with potatoes and rice), or the variety of ceviche (halibut, tuna). I went there with my party during Happy Hour some months ago, and the waitress strongly suggested that the Happy Hour deals are so worthy. She said most people do not take advantage of these specials for whatever reason, but they should be considered a must-try. I would be lying if I said this is the best Peruvian Restaurant in Long Beach. At first I was a bit upset because there is not distinction with the outside dining that the restaurant next door and this restaurant share. I sat at the wrong side for 10 minutes lol. However, I order their Lomo Saltado and WOW! It was amazing!! The meat they use is not your standard minute that many other good Peruvian restaurant use. It juicy and soft!! The meat so seasoned nicely and tomatoes are amazing. I thought it was different that they don't mix their fries with the saltado, but either way it was pretty bomb. Solid place for Peruvian. Ordered two dishes: ceviche mercado and lomo saltado. They were both delicious but thought it could use some improvements. The ceviche needs more of a base or more carbs such as chips to balance out the acidity. There were only two yucca fries so I had the rest of the meal packed up for to go as it got too acidic. Taste wise I wouldn't change a thing. The other dish, the beef was more cooked than what I typically am used to. But other than that no issues. Our server was a gem. Despite it being a full house, she answered our questions and stopped by multiple times. Reservations recommended. Will come back to try other options on the menu. read more

Peruvian food oh my!!! So glad to have found this authentic and fresh Peruvian restaurant! We didn't have one item on the menu we didn't like from the causa trio, aji de gallina, empanadas, pescado a lo macho,fried bananas and flan. The causa trio was a good to try all the flavors from spicy tuna, shrimp and crab. The tempura shrimp and crab were my favorite. Also tried all the empanada flavors, but first place goes to the Asada. It didn't even need the sauce that came with it. It was juicy and flavorful and could stand on its own. Chicken was good, but the corn was a different taste that it took send place. The aji de gallina is a MUST! I read the description of chicken breast with sauce. As simple and basic as this dish was the sauce was something I have never tasted before. We asked our server and it's made with a yellow Peruvian pepper. It's so good I plan to learn to make it at home since I'm a visitor in the area or at least find it somewhere near me. The pescado a La macho had a nice fillet of fish with bay scallops, shrimps and a few pieces of octopus. Cost wasn't too bad in compare to the quality and taste of food you're getting. The fried bananas are always a fan favorite with those crispy outer edges. The flan for me was a little too think and rich, but I do understand that is a preference. I can't wait to come back here and try more of the dishes. I have to try and come back here anytime I'm in Long Beach again. read more

Long Beach has revived in the past few years, with Aji symbolic of the high level ethnic cuisine that has made inroads of late. Never having been to Peru, all we knew were some of the chains and empanada joints, having no knowledge of the superb seafood, including the sublime causas, cebiche, and seafood. The common denominator is potatoes, but amped up to an extraordinary flavor and texture. As an example, causes consist of a layer of cold ground potatoes covered with crab, shrimp, etc with a slightly creamy, spicy, and tangy sauce. The difference is that the ancient Peruvians were the first to cultivate potatoes and now have over 800 varieties, almost none resembling your basic Idaho. As a consequence, you will experience potatoes likely as you have never tasted before. Decor is basic with wooden tables and booths. Service is efficient and attentive, all servers speak Spanish and some speak Japanese in addition to English!). Proces are highly reasonable, especially considering the superb quality of the food. Only restaurants in which you can "taste the love" receive my highest rating. We eat at Aji whenever we are in the South Bay and are never disappointed. read more

My husband and I came here for the first time on a date night yesterday, and I think we'll make this one of our regular spots! First - there is good street parking in the area, and there is a small back alley with free "1 hour" parking, although I doubt anyone checks or tickets the cars. Walking in - the place was pretty empty on a Tuesday night but it had a really cool loft vibe, and they were playing Latin music that made for cool ambiance. We came for Long Beach restaurant week, which was a GREAT value for $35 each, and their restaurant week menu had more options than I've seen anywhere else. We tried: APPETIZER - Causa Spicy Tuna: fish was fresh, but the texture was not my favorite - Anticucho de Carne: "street food", grilled steak pieces, probably my favorite item that I tried ENTREE - Aji de Gallina - shredded chicken in a creamy sauce with rice and potatoes, good but VERY heavy, and the chicken was not the freshest - Steak a Lo Pobre - skirt steak with chimichurri, rice with fried egg, plantains - good but needed more sauce, and the flavor was a little too smokey DESSERT - Lucuma ice cream - kind of maple-y, not a flavor I'm crazy about - Flourless chocolate cake - very rich and dense, I loved chocolate so I liked it a lot, and the portion was very big I was happy with everything - my only critique is that I wish the entrees came with more veggies or a salad. Instead it was lots of rice and starch. I would definitely come back, and next time I'd like to try the Ceviche and Lomo Saltado. I've eaten at Aji a dozen times if not more. Last nights dinner was again delicious. It's what happened toward the end of our meal. Why would management allow or ask staff to start cleaning the restaurant while 2 tables of 4 people are still eating. We had food sitting on our table when the stacking of chairs began, when the sweeping began and when the mopping with cleaner began. It's one thing to start putting things away but never should this happen. I've eaten at restaurants all over the world and this has never happened. Okay so WOW this food is incredible. I was very impressed with everything that our party of four ordered. I had the shrimp fried rice which is a fusion of Chinese and Peruvian. It was so delicious.
