My meal came to a total of $288.52 for 2 family buckets, 5 drinks,2 orders of rice & okra. 3 adults 1 child & a 2 yr old. My granddaughter the 2yr could/would not eat the mild backyard sauce. We presumed it be too spicy. When I asked our waitress for a little butter so the baby could eat the rice, she informed me of the $3 charge for the butter. At that time I could only estimated the meal at $230 and ask for courtesy butter for my granddaughter because she couldn't eat the mild sauce. Our waitress had passed our party over to the lead for the night Desiree. who told me there was absolutely NOTHING she could do,even though I was sitting there with a approx. $230 worth of food. She suggested I send the owner Han an email with my concerns. My family meal soured because Desiree had no customer service whatsoever and couldn't give my 2yr old granddaughter a little butter for her rice. Customer service goes a long way in my book. For a $288.52 Meal, I don't think a little butter for a 2 yr old as a courtesy is asking too much. Thanks anyway Desiree, keep your butter. Wondering if Han feels the same as you(if he does I'm definitely making the right decision to never return) Appreciate your quick response Han. When you say your staff offered options,you must mean pay $3 for butter because my 2yr old granddaughter could not eat mild sauce it was too spicy or don't get it. So I've lived in the area for about a year and just recently gave this place a shot. I didn't try it sooner because the photos on here made it look sort of janky. However, it's rather nice. Not Michelin star nice but clean with cute decor. The service was very good and the food was even better. If you love seafood and can eat a lot, I highly recommend getting a family bucket. You get the best bang for your buck. I've tried restaurants similar to this in both LA and NYC. This one is just as good as the ones in big metropolitan cities. So glad it's less than 10 minutes says from my apartment. read more

IT ISN'T WORTH IT! On Mother's Day we were craving some seafood boil and had no other choice but to order from backyard bayou. We've been to the Dublin location and actually talked to the owner before and he told us about the union city location. When we called in we did put in a big order about 190$ worth of food. However, when we grabbed our food they were missing 50$ worth of food and most of the clams were not open and full of sand. Decided to try this place for their Cajun crab and honestly I was not impressed the flavor is barely there in terms of the entire crab and I feel like it mostly the juice/ sauce. I think it's a little over hype but I would go back for the other stuff they had. read more

This place is good but I always order their popcorn shrimp and Cajun fries .. They always forget to give the spicy mayo even tho noted on my doordash instructions .. sometimes they feel like giving it .. most times no .. that I even had to make my own spicy mayo and bring it to work just so I can have my order correct I wish the owner Han would respond and reach out to me because I love this place food but I hate how they always mess up edit: the owner has reached out to me and I will give them two more stars for customer relations and I know how hard a Yelp review can penalize your efforts even though you can be trying .. anyway I hope they do better In the future and The owner Han was pretty kind about the mishap and noted he will be taking steps for correction hopefully in the future .. it is nice when businesses respond to their customers because that's who they serve .. read more

Great food (especially the garlic noodles!) Ate so much that we had to roll ourselves out. I'd definitely love to come back here. We got the lobster mac n cheese, shrimp, clams, garlic noodles, gumbo, corn bread, sausage, corn, fried okra...and I think thats it. For three people that was a bit ambitious, but we enjoyed all of it. The only items that stood out to me were the garlic noodles and the shrimp. I would say the quality is pretty good. Ive been a few times to this location, not super wild about the food accept 1 particular item, but im pregnant and craving, and its mothers day, so i decided to order from door dash, i also think that the fact that they hired somegirls from my old favorite lunch spot picnic sandwhich bistro in fremont factored in, idk if they are still working there but they provided greast customer service at both places and i want to support the business for them.. 30 minutes into my wait i get a call asking if i was willing to wait an hour for my food bc the kitchen was backed up. 10 minutes later i get a text saying the restaurant closed and i would get a refund in 7 days. I dont know what happened, and i dont care. They should have completed the orders they had in que before closing, PERIOD. Its mothers day, and i spent my money, And waited like 45 minutes just to get canceled on. My two friends and I decided on this place for a birthday dinner for our friend. First off, the employees of Backyard Bayou are very sweet and accomodating. My friend and I showed up before the guest of honor, and we had to wait over 45 minutes for her to show up. Still, our waitress continued to check on us, didn't rush us, and made sure everything was fine. So why the three stars? Well, the food. I'm not a huge seafood eater and I most definitely do not like eating with my hands. So crawfish and crab type feasts are not my thing. I do, however, enjoy cajun and southern style types of food. We ordered mac n cheese, and each one of us had a po'boy. Everything looked good, but the miss came with the seasoning. For example, I've been to Louisiana and I've been to tried and true cajun joints. You can't just toss Bay Seasoning on everything or actual cajun spices and call it cajun. The cornmeal seasoning on the shrimp was dry and flavorless. The shrimp were pretty flavorless, to. Plus, the bread was cut oddly and there was too much bread. We took a risk on this place and found ourselves stuck in the middle. There was no description of the item but our assumptions lead us wrong. We both ordered the catfish basket. I assumed because it was called a basket it would consist of more than just 5 pieces of fish. Especially considering that it was $16. Service was wonderful, food was good, not great. Would not recommend the garlic noodles the waitress was honest and said they're a hit or miss people either love them or don't care for them. We were the latter, use fettuccine instead of egg noodles and tasted like heavy garlic salt and not enough fresh garlic kind of gross. But besides that all the other food was good, fries were perfect, muscles and shrimp (head off) hit the spot with the mix seasoning mild had no spice she brought us medium on the side for dipping and that was much better. I will always stick to take out from this place because it is small! When I picked up my order, the place was a little dirty. I waited longer than usual to get help even though a girl up front was sitting folding napkins and sorting through utensils. She told me to head to the counter. Maybe they were short staffed on a Sunday afternoon. I ordered 2lbs of shrimp but ended up with only 1lb. It turned out 1lb was enough for 3 people! I shared and still has leftovers the next day. The shrimp were perfectly cooked and the mussels were so plump and juicy. The Bayou sauce was loaded with garlic. I liked the flavor but the sodium just weighs you down after a few minutes! The hot wasn't really spicy in my book. There wasn't much of a difference between mild and hot. I am just happy that there is a legitimate place that just serves shrimp, crab, lobster and mussels around here. Most of all this place has DECENT prices and an interesting menu! From bags of seafood, fried seafood, fresh oysters, mac and cheese, chicken wings or lobster rolls. Rice too! Asians gotta have rice tho! There's something for everyone. I have been to this place a couple times and have had multiple items from here. First time i came here i had the shrimp which was seasoned well and served the right way in a nice big bucket. The second time i came here i tried to Po Boy Shrimp. I have been to New Orleans a couple times and know what good Po Boys taste like. A Po Boy has two really good parts. Good sauce and good batter for the fried item. My Po Boy from here had excellent sauce, not too spicy but did have a little kick. The batter and shrimp on the other hand was terrible, rock hard and difficult to chew. Sadly the sandwich overall would have been much better with a light breading and letting the shrimp dominate a lot more than the breading did. Fries were really well prepared especially the garlic cajun ones! Service was a little slow on this visit but overall very friendly! Wife enjoyed the lobster mac n cheese along with the tasty cornbread. I just really wish that Po Boy would have hit the spot! read more

Cajun spot in the union city landing complex. This is a huge complex so there is ample parking. On weekends this place is quite busy so come prepared to wait. I would suggest hopping on the Yelp waiting list as it saves a ton of time. I came in on a Tuesday and it was still quite busy. Got seated very quickly though. I ordered a catfish po boy and their small bucket with 2 pounds shrimp and 1 pound mussel. I got the backyard style for the seasoning. The food came out quickly. The catfish was fried perfectly and melted in my mouth. The Cajun fries that came with it were seasoned perfectly. The shrimp was cooked great and the flavoring was a little sweet, salty and had a good Cajun spice. I enjoyed the flavor. Overall, great food, but a bit on the pricey side. Backyard Bayou is guaranteed to leave something out of your bag that you ordered. The food is expensive and they have the nerve to forget items that you spent your hard earned money. It appears that Backyard Bayou employs Filipino college students and they treat their own kind with respect and dignity. I'm an African American male and I pay attention to things like this. Me and three friends came here for indoor dining on a Friday after work. The restaurant seemed pretty full but we were able to get seated right away. Although the restaurant was busy, service was quick and friendly. My table ordered fries to share, three pounds of shrimp "backyard style", garlic noodles, and a fried oyster po boy. The taste of the fries reminded me of McDonald's fries, which to me is a good thing because I love McDonald's fries lol. The shrimp was cooked well and the sauce was flavorful. I'm pretty tolerant of spicy food and felt like medium was very doable. The garlic noodles were mediocre. The texture of the noodle felt like pasta noodles (linguine?). When ordered, I was expecting something chewier. The garlic taste was good/strong, but it was a bit salty. The oyster po boy was really good and it comes with the McDonald's fries. If I were to come back, I would probably add the po boy to my order. The price was about what I expected at ~$20 per person excluding drinks. When my group went, we were able to check in on Yelp to get a 25% discount on the garlic noodles. If you decide to get it, I would recommend doing that. Kickin Crab used to be my go-to spot for crawfish, but NO MORE. We started going to Backyard Bayou when we moved up to Union City a few years ago because the drive was just too far to KC. Well, Backyard Bayou used to be my backup B, but with how consistently good the flavor has been and how fresh the seafood has been, has now become my main squeeze. The service is usually top notch, the servers are attentive, and the food comes out quick and piping hot. I always get 3 lbs of the crawfish, Backyard Style, Hot, with an additional pound of shrimp. The Hot has a good kick to it that will leave your lips burning in a good way. Also get the garlic noodles because they are dabomb. read more

Yelped this place and I thought i would try it as i cant eat any meat today cuz of Lent. It is in Union City its close by so again i thought i would give this place a try. Due to Coronavirus, I was able to come in and order for take out only. I got the garlic noodle with Shrimp for my boyfriend and he said it was kinda bland and he add salt, pepper, parmeasan cheese, and added my fries to it. He said it was only okay. I got the selfie bucket with clams, shrimp, and crawfish. The crawfish taste frozen not good at all. And i told the girl i didnt want thick sauce so she recommended to get the backyard flavor with extra garlic butter. but the sauce was thick. Bad service. I don't care how good they are, they treat customers like shit. They automatically remove you from the wait-list without notifying you nor telling you how long they would do that. It doesn't even let me "communicate" as you said. This indicates that you need to improve your service and train your staffs to handle the situation better.
