I grew up at this place. I remember when it use to be called Pop n Fresh Pies and then they changed the name to Bakers Square because they wanted people to know they had food too. Great job marketing department...now you seem to only bake stuff. I'm being sarcastic! This place was always a fun place to hang out with friends and get a slice of pie. My favorite is the chocolate peanut butter. I remember just falling for it when I first had it. I did make the mistake in my younger years and actually eat food here. I was young...we all make mistakes. I will say that the corn bread was really good. This place is about pies. When we were kids my Mom would buy the whole Banana Cream Pie and bring it home. It was not my favorite but it was my Dad's favorite. He would eat it with a fork right out of the pie tin. This place will always hold some amazing memories for me. Once again my granddaughter & I drove 10 miles to dine here last Wednesday, July 17th. The restaurant was extremely crowded & it was before 5 p.m. We were, however, seated almost immediately. Waitress, Emily, came over & stated she would return to take our order as she had a few tables ahead of us. Nice. We waited only about 15 minutes for our food as Emily kept coming over to our table to apologize for slow service. "We did not expect to be this busy so we are short staffed". Food was hot & I told Emily to give the Chef a compliment as it probably was crazy in the kitchen. Again, we have not had any problems with food or service every Wednesday since February 2019. I've never really been drawn to Baker's Square, but my wife wanted to go there for Mother's Day. Very good stuff. Here's why -- 1) SELECTION & PORTIONS -- They really have a wide variety of very good food. Something I liked was that they offered a reduced portion size called "just right" and they knock a couple dollars off your order to eat what a normal person should eat anyway. 2) CORRECTION OF ORDER -- My pregnant wife forgot to ask for something removed from her salad in order to keep it pregnancy-safe. We offered to purchase the meal that we messed up on, but our waiter just said it was OK and quickly brought us back the same meal without feta cheese. 3) JUST SPECIAL -- This place is very comfortable and cozy. They gave flowers to all the mothers on Mother's Day. They gave my daughter a pack of crayons and coloring sheets right away, and all the staff were friendly. Definitely a heavily Caucasian crowd, so don't come here to meet a cross-section of Chicago's ethnic diversity. But for good ol' American cooking and a place with good hospitality, stop in and eat. read more

I came with a group of 16 people last week to celebrate Pi Day at this location. The staff was welcoming and made us feel like we were not an inconvenience. We had one waitress for our group. She was not polished but was very nice. She tried to make us as comfortable as possible. Our food came out quickly, and it was reasonably priced. I took a start off due to some errors with the pies. Some people in our party were given the wrong pie. In my case, I ordered the caramel apple sundae. I just received a piece of apple pie. The waitress took it back when she realized her error, but It definitely felt disorganized. I also got the impression that the staff was not ready for the crowds that would be coming that day for pies. As we were leaving, they were virtually out of pie and turning people away. Bakers Square has breakfast? Really? This is the conversation that took place every single time my boyfriend suggested we go to Bakers Square for breakfast. We finally made it there...no questions asked. Luckily it was a Friday morning so most people were at work and we had the place to ourselves (with the exception of the over 90 crowd). The breakfast combo is pretty cheap at around $5.99 and you get SO much food. We had a table full of french toast, biscuits, eggs, Belgian waffles, coffee, sausage links, English muffin and country brown potatoes and their were only two of us! before the meal we thought we would want some pie for the road but no way! Myself and 3 other people went here on a thursday around 1 p.m. to have a small family get together. Aside from the face masks and the customers being spread out, it was business as usual. We ate here in the past. The food we had was hot, fresh and tasted great. The employees were VERY polite and helpful. We got a whole pie to go when we left. That also was fresh and great. Their menu is a little bit smaller and the pie selection was cut back also a bit. But there truly is something for everyone. Plenty of free & easy parking. Located at the corner of Harlem & Foster. Reasonably priced meals. MOSTLY...a very kind, polite and fast wait staff. A few of the waitresses leave you in the corner and forget about you, which is frustrating. Especially when you ask for crackers for the soup and she never brings them back. Don't ask us if there is anything you can do if you aren't going to do it! POSITIVES: Free pie Wednesday. Huge comfortable seating. When you order coffee they leave a pot on the table so you don't have to wait for re-fills. They are very kid friendly, teenage friendly, young adult friendly, regular adult friendly and senior citizen friendly (MOST of the staff) We were there for breakfast one time, and the waitress took her break so she could drive a regular customer home because she did not want the elderly lady slipping or falling in the snow. 3 words here: Free Pie Wednesday! My favorite, I'd have to admit is the Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie. I can go for me a slice of that almost anytime! (But I dont, so do not worry!) This place is nostaligic and sorta special to me because I would spend hours there with friends eating and smoking and drinking coffee for hours upon hours when I was in high school and college. My experience at this Bakers Square was astonishingly disappointing tonight. My family has been coming to this location for many years, and have watched it slowly fall to terrible maintenance, sub-par service, and average food. Tonight, the entire restaurant smelled like some combination of old food and dirty mop water, making it wholly unpleasant to sit even for a slice of pie and a cup of coffee. The waitstaff was abuzz, but struggled to get several elements of our meal right - with only perhaps 20 customers in the restaurant. I was uncomfortable for the majority of our visit, and will likely not return anytime soon. read more

Every Bakers Square restaurant I go to has great customer service. I had a waiter named Angelo and he was very detailed with specials and very attentive to my girlfriend and I. She ordered the strawberry crepes, in which I had the chicken pot pie (which is amazing and filling!). This Bakers also got a recent make over, which is nice. Makes the area feel more loungish, and the prices aren't bad at all. I typically go here 1-2 a week. Also, I order pies from here all the time. I've been going to the Bakers Square in Melrose Park for years with my Mom. They were totally awesome there, they knew us and on days when my Mom was fussy and didn't like the food, they wouldn't charge us for it even telling them they didn't have to do that. So after my Mom passed away in May 2015 my friend and I started going to this Bakers Square. Let me tell you that this Bakers Square is a HIT or MISS. The first time we had awful service. I complained there, I complained online and never even heard a sorry. We always seem to go on Free Pie Wednesday so of course it's more crowded than normal. The next time we noticed the last server wasn't there. We finally got a very nice server and her name is Shannon. We ask for her if she's there. This restaurant gets so loud we asked if we can sit in the other section by the washrooms where its nice and quiet. Sometimes they let us and most times they don't. They tell us there's no server working over there and that section is not available and it's closed. I get so angry with this. I have complained many times, taken the online survey and never get any kind of response. Some of the people work there are pretty nasty but lately we've been getting good service. Now I noticed they put a Regional Manager's name and phone number on the receipts but I have had a big complaint lately. Baker's Square is the only place I feel comfortable going alone. I'm served fast, the food is great and the pie is even better. My favorites are... Griddle Combo with yummy scrambled eggs, bacon, and the best French toast I've ever tasted. They always give me a little pitcher of honey for my tea and they are usually pretty good. I love their Pot Roast. I make pretty bad pot roast and theirs is so good. They have great Chicken Pot Pies too. My friend loves their fish and of course the pie is the best. I've never had a problem at any location with ordering pies. And I've ordered from 5 locations. They used to give a Senior Discount but they no longer offer that on free pie day. When we asked this young girl says "we don't so discounts". When we went back we asked someone else and they just don't give double discounts on Free Pie Day. So that makes sense. I'm thinking that this location has so many complaints and that's the reason they are putting this manager's name and phone number on the receipt now. read more

This rating would be zero but yelp makes you place one star. I had a pie reservation. Made online with credit card information included. I arrived at 630pm to the store. When I entered the line was ridiculous. Those with reservations and without were all placed in the same line. After waiting 20 minutes and now stuck in a corner just past the door. A server announces "anyone want to pay in cash." Many state yes. She says then go over there. So all the people BEHIND me in. Line just turn around and go. Some of these people had just walked in! My wAit time to pick up your stupid, overpriced pies increased again, while others left, no reservation, no wait time, because your staff do not know how to move people correctly. read more

I've been to this restaurant twice. First, let's state the obvious--at least 1/2 the dining room is in there with a BYGO coupon--so how in the world would they pay enough servers? Expectations need to be managed by reality, folks. Anyway, last time I had a cheeseburger and yesterday I had the Southwestern Benedict, and I find the food to be quite well prepared and tasty. True--I asked for ketchup and the girl forgot, and it took a bit to get our pie--but we both ate for under $20 bucks! Our server was friendly and efficient and the food was hot when served. I would definitely recommend this place for what it is. One note: dress warmly..part of the seating area is cold because of the very large entry way and the fact that people are going in and out at quite a clip. read more

When it comes to breakfast and to chain restaurants in my area.... I prefer this Baker's Square over the local IHOP, Denny's, etc.. It is not as crowded as a Denny's on a Saturday morning and the food is not bad at all. I really like their white bread, it is almost like sourdough'ish in its texture and taste. Not sure what brand they use but I like it. I usually always get their plate called 'The Square Breakfast' and it has always been consistent. The service is very good and the managers make a point of going around asking if everything is OK. But not to the point where it is annoying or disruptive. read more

Today we sat down to eat here and watched as the waitress addressed all the tables except ours. We waited over 10 minutes and decided to leave. Not once did a waitress even make eye contact with us. When we left we told her about it and she said we weren't her table. We told the manager and watched as the waitress went into the back laughing. Seriously? Letting customers have a conference call? Entered the restaurant to find two people having a conference call in the restaurant for the rest of us to hear. The employees were too timid to ask them to put on headphones or leave. They confined us to one half of the restaurant rather than seating the rest of us who didn't want to listen to the meeting to the other half of the restaurant. It was very disruptive. Does their company know their employees are having a conference call in a public space? The four square breakfast is a deal. The food was good. This is the Bakers Square closest to our house so it's where I usually go. First thing I noticed walking in is that the glass in the door and inside windows is so dirty that you can hardly see through the glass! Then I get seated at a booth where the sun is streaming in. So it necessitated a move. So I ordered the honey mustard chicken which is pretty hard to screw up. It comes smothered in honey mustard sauce that used to be so good. However, not today. It was sickeningly sweet. Very few mushrooms but a lot of onions. Plus a large onion skin that was sautéed with the rest of the onions. My waitress was the only bright spot today. I don't know what's happened to this location but it must be poor management and indifference to the restaurant in general and what's going on in the kitchen. Wow, what happened to Bakers Square. This used to be such a good restaurant! My daughter and I stopped in one day last week for lunch while out shopping. We thought we would go share a sandwich and grab a piece of pie. Pie selection was very limited. I guess the waitress told the table behind us that they changed pie distributors. I had ordered my Thanksgiving pies 2 weeks ago and today I get an email (the day before Thanksgiving), stating that my order did not go through their system, and they had not received a confirmation from the backup system that my order was received either. So, I would have to call the store and see if they had my order and then go in and pay for them as the system was issuing credits for prepaid orders. When I got to the store were cars in line for "prepay", how did they get their orders to go through? I purchased an individual piece of pie as a treat for myself while doing my holiday cleaning. It was not that great. The pies do not look up to standard as years prior. They now come in plastic containers, no boxes. These pies used to be a staple at our Thanksgiving table, but it doesn't look like the stores will survive much longer with so many locations closing. Quality has gone downhill. read more

So I ordered online. Curbside pick- up for set for 2:00pm today. Just to be sure curbside was still an option-I called. According to J. yes-not a problem. I got a message to text that I had arrived-I did that at 1:57..... no response or acknowledgment. A few minutes later, I text again. No response. (Terrible system). I tried calling.....was left holding. 10minutes later I decide to go in.... yes, standing in line while also on the phone. Watching the phone ring as I'm the one calling. I finally get to talk to someone..... I'm listening as they tell a dif customer on the phone that u can't get the free pie online. I did. U just have to write in on, not add it.... the excuses were, I'm the only one here, corporate makes the policy, are u with Grubhub? "Your order is almost ready" says a dif girl..."how do u know that-u hv not taken my name?" now it's 2:20..... very frustrating. The other thing I noticed..... for the few people that were dining in-of course mask has to be off. But they sat customers right were the order pick-up line is? !!!!!! Why? Ok went there for breakfast big mistake. The whole menu only has one page for breakfast items. So no choices. I went with the basic 2 eggs with toast and hashbrowns. Worst experience ever. I can't believe how bad this place has gotten. We came here for my husband's first fathers day with his son, and we placed our order and didn't see a waitress at all the rest of the time. We waited an hour...... no one checked on us, or even asked if we were ok....... We left after an the hour with still no food and no waitress that asked if we were ok. The manager was only checking on customers that were upset, and no one else, you see customers getting upset get on the tables and start serving yourself if you have too. They just try to put us on a wait list to sit down even though there are more than enough seats in the restaurant. They reported that they were understaffed, but they had enough time to be screwing around in the kitchen making all sorts of noise and disturbing diners. And the understaffed kitchen staff was out front smoking cigarettes not even 15 feet away from the front door which made going in a very unappetizing choice. We left after purchasing a pie to go and couldn't even get comped after waiting almost 10 minutes for the hostess to acknowledge our presence. read more

Don't judge. I grew up on Bakers Square. Both sisters worked at my suburban outpost location in high school so I have fond memories of chain smoking Marlboro Lights in the back while gulping down diet Coke and Oreo pie. Again, don't judge. I was 17-years-old. The truth of the matter is I always enjoy my meal far more than I should at any Bakers Square. The tuna melt is never a let down. I always order it with a side of honey mustard that I'm convinced is laced with crack it's so good. I unabashedly dunk my sandwich in it along with pretty much anything else on my plate. BS always has some kind of meal deal where you can get 1/2 a sandwich, cup of soup, side salad and a slice of pie for something ridiculous like $9. I mean, seriously.... so cheap. Really, though, it's all about the pies. You can't go wrong. I'm a slave to the Oreo, but the Peanut Butter Cup is nothing to shake a fist at. You don't really want to admit how good the pies are because of all the amazing bakeries and such in Chicago, but for reals... the pie is the shizz. I'm also consistently impressed with the diet Coke at Bakers Square. It always has the perfect amount of carbonation. Sounds silly, but it's important. This location loses a star for lousy service. Slower than molasses and inattentive, but it certainly won't stop me from coming back. read more

WARNING: Are you craving a good piece of pie that tastes home made? Do you have a sweet tooth from time to time? If you answered YES -- this is the place to GO -- excellent pies, but go elsewhere for your dinner. SERVICE: The service is not great (unless you are sitting in Angelo's section). He is an outstanding Server, and will take very good care of you! I recommend that you ask if Angelo is working and have the Host seat you in Angelo's section. Otherwise, take your chances on getting crappy service here. Unfortunately, over the years, the managment has changed, but nothing has improved. The bottom line is the service still sucks. If you want good service, don't go here. BEWARE: We ordered the chicken pot pie which was extremely salty (very high in sodium). Also, it did not contain chicken breast, but instead it was filled with mostly dark meat and very little chicken pieces. When we found a piece of chicken it was connected to a piece of bone (or other tissue that we could not recognize unless we send it to a Lab for I.D.). Bottomline: Stay away from the chicken pot pie. Although the crust was wonderful -- light, flaky and pretty good -- the inside of the pot-pie was very disappointing -- ugh! RECOMMENDATIONS: The butternut squash soup is pretty good. The summer salads are fairly decent. Also, the chicken salad with walnuts, dried cranberries and other goodies is flavorful and robust. If you want a simple and lighter dinner, such as soup and salad, I recommend the flat-bread sandwiches. For example, the Mediterrean and Italian beef sandwiches are filled with an explosion of flavors. We tried the Cuban sandwich and it fell flat for us -- skip it. The honey dijon chicken breast dinner is consistent (order the sauce on the side or they will drown the chicken in the honey-dijon mustard sauce). Please keep in mind that the butternut squash soup is seasonable -- starting in mid-October -- not sure when they discontinue serving it though. We usually go to dinner elsewhere (Chicago, Park Ridge, Oak Park, Evanston or Rosemont) and go to Baker's Square for dessert. Once in a while we go here for soup and sandwich, but that's about it. Baker's Square is not really a dinner place, but if you feel like dinner stick to a sandwich and soup (or as my niece likes to say "sang-wich"). FREE SLICE of pie every Wednesday: They serve a FREE slice of pie at lunch or dinner time. It gets very crowded so if you are going for dinner and/or lunch plan to arrive early -- otherwise, you will be waiting for a table/booth and/or parking spot. The restaurant is family friendly (older kids -- not toddlers or babies) and it has an open-floor plan. It is also a neighborhood favorite for the senior citizen crowd, so if you don't mind being surrounded by the "blue hair" crowd, go for it. read more

This location has been remodeled and the menu seems revamped. Lots of selections, but it was nice to see that they still had some of the classics. The only thing that could be better about Bakers Square is the restaurant portion of the whole place. It's ALL ABOUT the pie. All of their pies are incredible. They won't let you down. I won't even give you my personal favorites because I don't want to sway you from the fruit pies which are all freaking WONDERFUL I just personally prefer pies full of sugary nuts and oreos and chocolate and cream (not all in one). Anything you try, you're going to like it. They're reasonably priced as well. If Baker's Square happened to expand their menu I think that they'd be able to improve their business, which I'd really like to see. read more
