[[HIGHLIGHT]]My first time here and it's a cute bar![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Very small place with good food![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I ordered the guacamole that was very bomb that had a little kick to it! It was 5/5 for sure! I tried the green chicken enchiladas that were very good!! Good flavor and spice. The customer service was 4/5 pretty good just could have came back more often to check on us. I will try Barama again! Enjoyed my time and food. Parking available on the street!

Wow .. amazing ... hidden gem! [[HIGHLIGHT]]Upscale Mexican food at a casual fare - all day happy hour at the bar, cute little dining area.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The restaurant next door has a Michelin star and it's the same chef. Menu is constantly changing and being updated to even more delicious food. Staff is always awesome and friendly. Great margs too!

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Really like the vibes of this place. It was very chill and I liked the decor.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I was with a group and we all sat at the bar. The bartenders were really nice and gave us good recommendations. We only ordered drinks, no food. The margaritas were good and the Snake's blood drink was pretty good. I also liked that they had non alcoholic mixed drink options as well. Not sure every drink was worth the price but I would go back to try the food.

4++ [[HIGHLIGHT]]this might be the most 'chic' restaurant I've ever been to that specializes in Tex-Mex.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]I came here on a weeknight and the place was pretty chill.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I was able to get a seat at the bar right away. I like that they have a pretty straightforward simple menu. Everything seems reasonably priced in the mid range and there are offerings that are in the upper range as well. I came here, hoping to just have kind of a casual dinner by myself and a drink. This place definitely did not disappoint. I ended up ordering one of the 'bacos' and I thought it was tasty. It had me all nostalgic for the chef's old restaurant - Baco Mercat. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Just a great place to enjoy a meal with friends or by yourself at the bar.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Hidden gem, indeed! I was invited to Bar Ama for a small birthday dinner - table for 6. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Clean, dim setting and not too crowded.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Our waiter Nate was great! I ordered his favorite items and wasn't disappointed at all. I had the Snakes Blood (whiskey with hibiscus) and the chicken ranchero plate (I think). It was sooo yummy. The order consists of one large soft taco with a good portion of shredded chicken on top. It was SO flavorful. I couldn't tell exactly what it was, but it almost tasted Mediterranean. There were many appetizers and desserts involved as well. Everything was delicious. The queso was especially popular, we reordered that maybe 3 times. Service was lovely. Everyone was nice and very attentive. Great place to pop in with colleagues after hours if you work nearby

Truffle Caviar Nachos

I tried this spot during Dine LA this year (specifically Le Dräq, which is the newest restaurant inside of Bar Ama) and overall the food wasn't anything exciting, but that's not to say it was "bad" either. We tried several things from the DineLA menu (i.e. Pesto Cauliflower, Caesar Brussels), as well as some other additions that we thought sounded too good to not try (i.e. Truffle Caviar Nachos, Lobster Flauta). The only things that truly stood out would be the le dräQ bäco (wagyu short rib "taco") and the pineapple upside-down cake, which reminded me of an apple crisp. Both of those were very delicious and flavorful, but most of the other food options we tried were a bit underwhelming from a flavor perspective. The lobster flauta was fine, but tasted more like cheese than it did lobster, and the caviar truffle nachos, which I'd expect to have that wow-factor solely based on its description alone, simply fell short and was not nearly as flavorful or unique as I expected (the $25 price point also did not warrant the portion or the taste in my opinion; a few items here seemed priced a bit high for what you get, but I chalk that up to the current state of our economy more than anything else rather than to the fault of the restaurant themselves). On the flip side, the service was amazing and they were very attentive. [[HIGHLIGHT]]And the overall ambiance of the restaurant/bar is chic and cute.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] TL;DR: While a lot of the food was just average in my opinion, I didn't have any complaints on the service or ambiance. I think this would be a nice spot to grab drinks at, with a couple light bites (including the wagyu bäco - in my opinion, the standout that you must try if you do come here), but I wouldn't come here solely for the food expecting culinary excellence.

I came here once last year and really enjoyed the food but I came back this weekend and was beyond impressed~ We came here after specifically looking for piri piri chicken (this dish is originally from Portugal) and have had trouble finding a dish similar to it in LA. Stumbled upon the menu for Bar Ama for their fajitas with piri piri chicken. Ordered the fajitas and it was amazing! The piri piri chicken fajitas had the piri piri sauce and seasoning, so juicy and tender. It was sauteed with green bell peppers and onions. It also came with two different salsas, and one mayo sauce along with rice & beans mixture and four flour tortillas. Their guacamole is also one of my favorites! I'll be back to get more fajitas next time.

The food here is incredible! They are so friendly and welcoming, everything was ready in minutes. They're off menu, secret item. Puffy tacos are an absolute must, but you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. They have a great happy hour as well. [[HIGHLIGHT]]One of our favorite restaurants downtown Los Angeles, highly recommended if you're looking for elevated Mexican food and a casual environment.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

At long last I finally tried Bar Ama, chef Josef Centeno's Tex-Mex cantina. I have dined at his adjacent Italian-Japanese omakase tasting menu Orsa and Winston; they share restrooms. That was during the pandemic, when both restaurants were serving in the adjacent alley. Bar Ama entwines traditional Tex-Mex offerings with lots of fresh vegetables, plus a selection of off-the-menu puffy tacos (an ode to chef's hometown of San Antonio). The restaurant has a regular menu, while the bar has a Super Nacho Hour menu. Note that during the first 2 hours of service, the bar menu is also available in the dining room, and there are deals to be had. I ordered a medley of dishes off both menus and had lots of leftovers. From the Super Nacho Hour menu: 1) Ama's margarita. Classic, with a chile-salt rim. 2) sweet potato mole dorados. Two crispy empanada-like half circles of deliciousness topped with a pretty complex mole. 3) Squash blossom quesadilla. Although I could see the squash blossoms, there wasn't a lot of flavour. The chile crunch dipping sauce was smoky but not too spicy. Had I not been dining solo, I would have ordered the Super Nachos, which looked nice on an adjacent table. From the regular menu: 4) Grilled baby corn. Delish! Tiny baby corn with the husks still attached perfectly grilled. 5) Mom's green chicken enchiladas. Apparently based on chef's mom's recipe; classic and comforting in the best way, baked and served in a hot cast iron skillet. Definitely has some spice! Off the menu (just ask): 6) shrimp puffy taco. There were several filling options, but the server recommended this one. It was fab. This crunchy dish as well as the crispy dorados were finished here so as not to lose the texture. Dessert was a plate-size bunuelo, a disc of fried dough flavoured with cinnamon sugar and honey. Also finished at the restaurant. Overall a very good and ample meal. So many other things I'd like to try in the future.

Came back over this past week with some friends and had a better experience than last time apparently! We sat at the bar for a few drinks and snacks and I didn't make a huge mess this time around The nachos were killer, just as yummy as last time. I also tried the sweet potato dorados and a pulled chicken taco which were great Margs were yummy but what stood out the most was the spicy rim. Tasted more than just salt and Tajín, a nice sweetness to it that added a lot to the margarita

Nice vibes for a cocktail with friends or colleagues! We also had food and I loved the aguachile! Definitely a place to keep in my back pocket.

Cool spot with a great vibe for Mexican fusion food! I repeat this is not your typical Mexican street taco menu. With that said nacho (happy) hour is a great deal and an awesome way to try everything! Tortillas thin and light made of flour and the filling is meaty! I had the shredded chicken and ground chicken. I also forgot to mention they are vegan and plant based friendly! So for those of you that enjoy that give them a chance. Queso also great and desserts? Order them all and share. The tapioca was so light i could eat 2 every day. Rice pudding thicker but not sugary. Come and enjoy and try something different. Parking lot nearby one block away, street parking pay attention to signs. Must try: squash blossoms and puffy bread!! And all desserts lol.

Crunchy Duck Quesoritto

[[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant environment is good.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The service was nice. My friend commented the Fish Taco are the best fish taco they've ever had-- really crunchy and tasty! The Crunchy Duck Quesoritto though, is not crunchy at allit's just not that goodtoo much meat flavor for me.

The Lucky Tiki in Highland Park is the sister location of the original Lucky Tiki in West…read moreHollywood. This spot opened about a year ago, and has a cool speakeasy style entrance at the Highland Park Bowl bowling alley. It is a small space, and I would highly recommend making a reservation on Resy. You have 90 minutes to drink and dine. I parked behind the bowling alley where there is a medium sized pay parking lot. Park in a space, remember your space number painted on the ground, and go to the pay station at the end of the lot. I found the parking machine to be extremely finicky as did other people. After ten minutes of failure, I ended up moving my car to another space, and then it worked. This has nothing to do with the Lucky Tiki, but FYI if you park there. We walked around to the front of the bowling alley, and checked in. Seating options include at the bar, tiki hut booths, and high top tables. The décor inside is a tiki lovers paradise. The room has a high ceiling with many tiki lamps, floats, puffer fish, tiki huts, thatch, ropes, barrels, netting, carvings, a hanging canoe, and a large tiki right in the middle of the space. In addition to the great décor, when you order certain drinks, special effects are triggered. There was also great tiki music playing all evening. We sat at the bar since we always enjoy talking to the bartenders. We actually ran into Skipper Christian in the parking lot on the way in, and he ended up being our main bartender, with Nick and Jo also working behind the bar. We put in a food order right away. The chicken potstickers ($12) came with five tasty bites, and the garlic teriyaki dipping sauce was good. We also had the giant pretzel ($16) which comes with mustard, beer cheese, and ranch sauces. This was excellent, and the perfect filling snack before a bunch of drinks. My first drink was the Siren's Song (Flor de Cana Eco rum, lemon juice, cassis, Oloroso sherry, apricot foam topper, $19). This drink is served in a great mermaid with skull mug and triggers special sound effects and bubbles fill the air. Those bubbles on top of the drink had a great light citrusy apricot flavor, probably the best flavored bubbles I've ever had. The drink itself was very good and balanced with some complexity. She wasn't sure what to order at first, and Christian asked her what flavors she liked. He ended up making a spin on a Tradewinds with some mango and pineapple to go along with the apricot and coconut. It was nicely balanced and not too sweet, even with all that fruit in there. My second drink was the Sun of Suns (Tierra de Acre mezcal, coconut cream, Giffard mango liqueur, pineapple juice, lime juice, $17). This was coconut and pineapple forward with some good smokiness in the background. Her second drink was the Whatever Floats Your Boat (Ford's gin, lemon juice, velvet falernum, orgeat, passion fruit syrup, guava soda, topped with hazelnut passion fruit foam, $19). It is served in a cool boat mug, and triggers thunder sound effects and lighted mechanical Polynesian tiki characters paddling a canoe over the bar. This was another good balanced drink. It was a little gin forward and the passion fruit popped out, maybe from being both in the drink and the foam top. That creamy hazelnut passion fruit form on top is delicious. I'd happily have a glass of that on its own. We were still a little hungry so we ordered the Hawaiian pizza (marinara, diced pepperoni, red onion, pineapple chunks, hot capicola ham, $16). It was another good tasting, perfectly sized snack, and the crust was light and airy. We were already fifteen minutes over our time limit, but we got the green light to stay longer to order a third drink to share. We ordered the Tiki Diablo (Flor de Cana Eco rum, Worthy Park 109 rum, Alma Tepecha chile liqueur, orange juice, lime juice, mango syrup, guava soda, $24). This drink serves two people, is served in a cool volcano bowl with glowing red lava around it, and comes with a fire show. Unfortunately, right after it was served, the host came over and said we were over our time and had to leave shortly. Christian made up for it by giving us two tall pours to go enjoy in the bowling alley bar area which was fine. We were happy we got some extra time inside. The drink was also very good, balanced with a little complexity. We had a great time. There is so much great décor to look at. The drinks and food were very good, and some of the the drink presentations and special effects were the icing on the cake. All of the bartenders were very friendly and a lot of fun. We purchased up a few zombie glasses to take home as a souvenir. I'd definitely recommend visiting the Lucky Tiki in Highland Park!

It's not surprising given the neighborhood and decor, but I think they lean towards more Japanese spirits and beers. Happy hour specials were still going on. I'm not sure if they thought they were gonna get that much business on a holiday but I think there's only maybe one or two people behind the bar. Since it was early when we got there, it was still not that crowded. I got the special which was a shot of Japanese whisky and a beer. Great price! Haha. PROTIP: Study the menu beforehand, eat on the Patio, order the Wngs and Short Rib and Try Son Nong Dan across the street. SUMMARY: Go to Koreatown and get better food for less I finally visited the much hyped Mulberry the other night, expecting a fantastic experience based on all the hype and social media. What I got was an overpriced meal on Sawtelle that watered down what should have been a showcase for excellent Korean food.  Mulberry is cramped and dark on the inside and excellent on the patio. There are some interesting tables inside near the back, but the Patio is where the action is, especially when the sun is out.It has shades of Hatchet Hall's ambiance and a great vibe. Service comes fast and is very good. They do know what they are doing from a service perspective. Drink orders arrive quickly, and food is served fairly fast. We knew what we wanted before going. Korean Pancake, Wings, Dumplings, Acorn Noodles and Short Ribs.  Korean Pancake - small and just ok flavor. The sauce was good, but for $17, you could get a giant, better tasting pancake almost anywhere else. Fried Chicken Wings - probably one of the two stars of the night--had a fantastic crust and were very plump and juicy. Sauce and pickles were excellent and you get two types of wings with each order, both were excellent.  Acorn Noodles - a very good mix of flavors, good nori, the hard-boiled egg (a surprise) was good--expensive for $22Steamed Dumplings - well made and cooked well, but the lackluster sauce served with them didn't help. A well-crafted dumpling that needs a much more flavorful sauce to accompany it.  Beef Short Ribs - The other star on the menu, along with the wings. Very tender and great taste. Use the salt! We ordered the extras which you don't have to do. Small piece for $49. It's a No Tip restaurant so you get the automatic 20% charge - which I did not mind. Pay the help. Our bill came to $200 for a meal that was probably worth $100.You can go to some of the AYCE Korean BBQ places and get better quality, more food and be happier. The hype for this place will die down. If you like Sawtelle go to Son Nong Dan across the street for an overall better experience and better pricing.

We decided to get a drink to celebrate Father's Day, only to strike out at the first two bars we tried--I guess a lot of places are closed at 9:30 on a Sunday. This is how we ended up at Thunderbolt, a buzzy bar in Echo Park, just far enough away that we'd never made our way over. I loved it immediately. Thunderbolt has the friendly, comfortable atmosphere of a neighborhood bar and the hip aesthetic and high-level cocktails of a millennial boozer destination. (Not that young people can't or shouldn't hang out here, but it seems especially geared toward people like us, who drank at Walker Inn a decade ago.) We ended up sitting next to a guy who regularly drives up from Palos Verdes. I guess the place gets pretty busy, but it was ideal on a Sunday night. Happening but not crowded, with just enough space at the bar for us to grab two seats together. The bartender was great, super helpful and welcoming. He also made excellent drinks. Thunderbolt is one of those bars with an encyclopedic illustrated book for a menu. Not a long menu, just a detailed one, with a lot of information available about each drink. We got a Liquid Picnic and a Barcelonnette--just one round to close out the weekend. Both were delicious. The Liquid Picnic was a smooth, savory gin martini made with London dry gin, tomato, citron, vermouth, rosemary, and black pepper. I learned from the book that it used clarified tomato water. (There was also further reading about the clarification process.) The Barcelonnette was a mezcal sour with Suze, passionfruit, and lime, the foam made without egg white through some geeky mixologist process.
