My friends and I loved the original location and went again right before it shut down a couple years ago... so we were very excited to hear it reopened in a new location and were happy to discover it's just as good. We went for dinner - 4 adults, 2 kids; most of the party arrived early and they were able to seat us early for our 7pm reservation, which I was happy about since dinner took a bit longer than I'd expected. Food: Kids: Hannah Pizza, no basil (forgot to take a pic but the kids liked it and it looked good) Apps: Polpettone, Insalate di calamari and Pane e Olio - all very good, the meatball was bigger than expected and one would have been enough for the 4 adults to each taste it. The bread helped to soak up the flavors/sauces of the other dishes. Pasta: Rigatoni and Gnocci - both very solid pastas with good flavors. Not oily or heavy. Entree/Star!: JW Pollo al Forno and JW potatoes - just as good as we remembered and not to be missed! Must get! Also got the soft shell crab special (tis the season!) and it was perfectly cooked- crispy on the outside but not over-breaded, and super juicy inside! Dessert: Strawberry-rhubarb crostata - very well balanced, not too sweet, perfect ending despite being quite full. I love strawberry-rhubarb season! If you do too - definitely save room. A few nitpicks but it was mostly driven by one odd waitress. The rest of the staff were great and attentive: - The waitress was a bit weird when we requested to put in the kid's pizza order first while we perused the menu for ourselves. We do that all the time, and it's a family-friendly restaurant so her reaction confused us - We asked if one meatball was enough to share for the four of us - she indicated it was much smaller than what actually came out. It was really good, so we didn't mind having extra but one would have sufficed - They were already out of one app we ordered, so I asked to sub the bruschetta, but asked if they could leave the tomatoes off one piece (just put the bean puree) - but the waitress said no changes allowed. Usually that's indicated on the menu, so again I was a bit surprised by her reaction. - there was a long gap between the pasta and main course. Not a huge deal, and the waitress did at least kindly acknowledge that the food should be coming out shortly. Overall, highly recommended. Definitely get the chicken and potatoes! read more

Heavy doors! Geez. But, great and spacious ambiance greeted by a tall woman in a lavender sweater. She sweetly asked about how many are we and our proof of vaccination and IDs. One of us took forever to find his proof (not NYer tho) and she patiently waited. Now, this assured me that this establishment is taking the vaxxed only customers seriously. Nice and classy ambience. Menus were handed to us. Drinks were served. We went straight to the main course section 'cuz we were famished. The font on the menu is kinda non-traditional that took me a while to decipher! So, I ordered shrimp with polenta (gamberi saltati). Did the chef read my mind? 'Cuz it came out of the kitchen in a flash! Few minutes later, I'm gustatorily satisfied. It was good! Barbuto has always been a fan favorite for many years and last night I went with a couple girlfriends to celebrate a birthday. I was extremely excited because I've heard nothing but great things. The food is delicious (get the meatball!) ... the service is horrible. We waited over 30 minutes to even be acknowledged by our server and completely ignored the entire dinner. I had to ask twice for the birthday cake and after the cake came, we waited for plates/forks for over 15 minutes and decided to walk up to the bar for plates, forks and a knife and cut the cake ourselves. Mind you - there's a $10 cutting fee. Overall, not the level of service that I was expecting at a well-known established. I've lived in New York for over 10 years and this was by far the worst service I've experienced. read more

One of the best restaurants I've ever visited. Last night, we had such a wonderful date night here with our friends. Our server was quite pleasant, the space is lovely, the service is excellent, and the food was truly delectable. Carbonara, linguini, bucatini, and rigatoni are among the pasta dishes we order. The bucatini had the least flavor, but it was still manageable. The steak was incredible--so delicious and tasty! Dessert was also delicious! We appreciated not being rushed through our lunch and being able to take our time with everything. Simply go here whether you need to impress someone or simply want to spoil yourself! read more

2 friends and I had lunch after our Whitney Museum visit. We were well greeted when we arrived. One of us has food allergies and our waiter Ryan was very attentive to the allergy alert. All of our appetizers, main dishes and desserts were absolutely delicious with suggestions by Ryan. Our fried calamari with fresh greens was an unexpected delight. This is a really cute place at Greenwich near The Whitney Museum. It caught my eye every single time I passed it. The interior did not disappoint; even the menu was aesthetically pleasing to me. Branding and design are definitely on point...but unfortunately the food wasn't as good. The pasta was too salty and thick for my liking, and it's probably my fault for not knowing that the salmon pizza I ordered wouldn't have cheese and tomato but... it's pizza I wanted cheese and tomato. Our expectations were high when we were finally able to make it to Jonathan Waxman's new location of Barbuto. The problem with high expectations? You are almost always disappointed. - Food was mediocre, especially the mushroom pasta which was tasteless and we didn't finish. Pizza was bland and really meh. - The decor felt pretty cold and impersonal. The place apparently used to be an ice factory and it doesn't seem like much effort was put into making the place feel warmer - Service was spotty. We had to ask several times for things - We initially asked if we could say "hi" to the manager (we live in the neighborhood and wanted to welcome them), they never came - Chef Jonathan Waxman came onto the floor, but spent all his time with two tables of friends. He didn't seem remotely interested in how other tables were doing I ordinarily would give less stars but since it's a pandemic, four stars. Genuinely hope this feedback is helpful. Outstanding meal in a beautiful room. I came by myself at around 9PM on a weeknight and was seated promptly at a high top table by the bar, where I could take in the whole room and vibe. I had what has to be one of the best salads in NYC--a brilliantly eat-able kale salad (kale chopped fine and massaged well with fine evoo) with perfectly balanced, anchovy-kissed dressing and breadcrumbs in place of croutons. Rest of meal: a beautiful pasta with lobster, peas, and fresh herbs; a heavenly piece of pistachio cake with lemon curd; and a perfect cocktail with dinner and espresso with the cake. Finally made it to Barbuto! We took our kids with us for lunch. The atmosphere is very open & spacious, not fancy but still elegant. Service was super fast...they say they allot 2 hours for parties of 4 but we were out of there in an hour. They were attentive but felt rushed. It worked out in our favor though because we had time to walk the high line before visiting the museum. We started off with breadsticks & focaccia...which I personally think should be included!!! They were both delicious. For our mains, the kids enjoyed the Hannah pizza & frutta de mare. We had the pasta bolognese, which was spicy but perfect, and the gnocchi with pesto and snap peas, which was super tasty! For dessert we enjoyed the chocolate pudding (more of a mousse) and the pistachio lemon cake...more lemony but very rich & filling! Would recommend trying Barbuto out! Great location!!! Way back when, I was a big fan of the original Barbuto. Every Sunday, sometimes a second time during the week for great food and charming service in a well managed restaurant. When they reopened, I waited until the frenzy died down. Now, after 4-5 visits, it's not worth it. A visit two nights ago confirmed this. My partner and I had a reservation, which we confirmed. We were on time, but we stood at the host stand, waiting, for ten minutes before a server told us she couldn't help us. We had to wait for the hostess. That was another 5 minutes. We should have left. Our server took our drink orders after handing us one page greasy, torn menus, and got one order wrong. Somehow, "Lambrusco" became "Gruner."We didn't make it an issue. We ordered the salad , gnocchi and chicken. The salad came without flatware or plates. The GM brought them. It was fine. Gnocchi and chicken weren't. Gnocchi were rubbery and in a sauce that was mostly olive oil. Somehow, the chicken was dry and overcooked, and also undercooked. Both were more cold than hot, as if they sat under heat lamps for too long. We ate about 1/3 of each platebefore we gave up. The absent waiter showed up, said nothing and took them away. No ask about the food or taking it home. Dessert was good, but we didn't come for dessert. That's pretty much the way it's been each time. You make the choice: the view is unsurpassed and it's "the legendary Barbuto," You want good food, good service, and a clean menu? Move on. read more

Went here for dinner on a Monday night.. 3 of us with a 7:30 reservation and we arrived about 10 minutes early. We were immediately seated (good so far) and then sat there for about 20 minutes before a waiter came and asked us for drink order. By that time, we wanted to also order our appetizers, but was told by waiter that he can't take drink order and food order together. ‍. Everyone who was seated after us, all around us, were waited on and received drinks, then apps, then main course.... While we sat. Our waiter was horrible!!! I think we were sitting at the designated "ignore us all night" table. He took everyone's orders at tables all around us but absolutely sucked at coming to our table. We finally waved him down after 50 MINUTES we placed app order and were about to add our dinner order to it but he said he'd be back. 20 minutes later our apps arrived. We ate burrata and also prosciutto with melon. Both were really nice. We finished our apps and our waiter still hasn't returned. I finally stopped him as he was walking my IGNORING us. By 8:45, 75 minutes after our reservation , we still had not placed our dinner order and our waiter was MIA. We finally flagged down another server, asked for our check, and paid for our apps and drink. We thought we were going to have a nice dinner with friends, we left frustrated, annoyed and hungry. Had our friends back our house and cooked a pot of pasta for them. What an incredible bummer. read more

I've never written a bad review, but I wish I had read one before we came here, so I guess it has to be me. We came here to celebrate our anniversary, and asked the wait staff right away to take our time. We were still on cocktails when they brought out our salad. OK. Then they brought out the pasta while we were still eating the salad. We tried to eat that right away instead of finishing our salad so the gnocchi wouldn't get cold. But before we could finish either the appetizer OR first course, they brought out the chicken! It literally wouldn't all fit at the table. We had to send the chicken back to be kept warm in the kitchen so we would have space on our table for everything, and it was weirdly difficult to get them to do so. I wish I could say it was because we were taking so much time with each course, but no, they literally brought all three courses within 30 minutes of sitting down (!), despite our explicit request to take our time. It was late, but not yet the end of the night, the kitchen was still open, there was no reason to be rushed like this. I honestly can't understand it, but it really ruined the evening for us to feel like we had to keep pushing back in order to make time and space for ourselves, when our goal was simply to have a long meal together. Our first waitress was very sweet and apologetic for the speed of things and the way the kitchen handled stuff, but when she ended her shift everyone else was pretty rude. They didn't offer us dessert, and didn't say goodbye when we left, which just seems like basic courtesy. The food was good, yes. But there are so many places to get a good plate of pasta in NYC where you're NOT rushed, and can actually enjoy a night out. Basically, if you're only in it for the food, Barbuto is fine. But if you're looking for a night out that's focused on the actual experience of spending time with people over dinner, this is NOT the place to do it. What's good food if you don't have the time to enjoy it? Also worth noting, the atmosphere is sort of scene-y, with loud music and people who look like they live in the Hamptons most of the time. Not cozy or intimate in any way, which would have been fine if we weren't rushed, but seems indicative of this same approach to dining. Finally! After forced to shutter in March 2020 due to the pandemic, the acclaimed restaurant has resurrected. There is of course, the signature dish of roast chicken simply dressed with salsa verde, but simplistic food is even harder to master and replicate. While chef Waxman been keeping busy with other ventures during the dormant time, reopening Barbuto has always been on his mind, just getting the right timing and the opportunity has always been blocked...until now. While it's exciting to see new restaurants joining the dining scene in NYC, sometimes it's comforting to walk into an old friend, knowing just what's in the menu and could taste the bite before the plate arrives. The menu is still seasonally based on Italian flavors, but there will surely be surprises along the way. read more

I was wayyyyy disappointed. we had a VERY early reservation so you were still slightly able to see in the restauran but it soon became too dark to see our....menus, food, you name it. we asked for extra candles( & we weren't the only ones- a 4 top near us got 4!) thus a huge impact on our meal. food was ok, not great. bread course: some foccaia was great, some stale & dry. breadsticks were great. calamari salad: a mess of overdressed greens w/ squid buried here & there. hanger steak: again just a mess! steak was cut up & mixed w/ the rest of the dishalthough steak was cooked nicely, icky. chicken: ok...just ok. sad. side of potatoes... we do much better at home. Overrated restaurant all around. The only reason I am even giving it two stars was because the service was excellent. Our server was pleasant and timed our meal well. They were very attentive and great about refilling water, replacing silverware, etc. Now the food... pizza was ordinary, giant meatballs were decent but nothing special. The highlight of our appetizer course was a small $8.00 bread and focaccia basket with some tasty olive oil. Linguine with clams had only 4 clams and no seafood flavor whatsoever. The Amatriciana was disgustingly over sauced and the guanciale was tough and burned. The chanterelle mushroom pasta was an appetizer size and had a strange vinegar flavor in the stuffing. The skirt steak was actually inedible. It had a metallic flavor and a strange aftertaste. It sat uneaten after everyone tried a bite and realized there was clearly something wrong with the meat. Typical case of a celebrity chef riding on the coattails of his reputation. There are thousands of better choices for Italian in NYC, so skip this one and move along. read more

Barbuto is terrific. Really cool far west village location and it's a large space with a big bar (where we had a great house martini prior to dinner, the best way to eat out). The team is friendly from the get go and we felt taken care of by the friendly staff. We went for the roast chicken and it didn't disappoint. Don't expect it to be life changing but it is among the best roast chicken in NYC: juicy with great flavor and an amazing crispy skin served with their version of a chimichurri sauce. Delicious. Also want to acknowledge the calamari salad which is maybe the best version of fried calamari I've ever had. Great place and I'm happy it's here! read more

This place was really a disappointment. My wife is Italian and I spend 3 months a year there - Italian food, or even inspired by Italian cuisine, this ain't. Tagliatelle with clams, swimming in butter with few clams and grossly undercooked pasta. The pizza with salmon was more interesting, although the crust was over-cooked and the salmon just slapped on. The duck was probably the best thing ordered by the table. The service was also poor. There are better places in the area, I imagine people still come here for the location, which is nice. read more

I tried Barbuto on the strength of its inclusion in the NY Times' "100 Best Restaurants in New York" supplement. It was a decent meal, but nothing remarkable. The space is pleasant and airy, with lots of windows. The vibe is very informal, from the servers to the table settings to the way the diners dress. Our server was young, friendly, and reasonably attentive, but not particularly experienced or knowledgeable; we could have been at a corner pub. Apparently bread and bread sticks are extra, or maybe need to be specifically requested, since we weren't served any and I only saw two tables in the (full) restaurant that had any. They looked good, though. Wine by the glass is uniformly pricey; I see no reason other than profit not to include at least one choice for the budget-minded. We're big pizza fans but we passed on Barbuto's; the crust looked puffy at the edge and soft, while we prefer thin and crisp, but to each his or her own. Our calamari salad was excellent, with fried squid and a variety of greens with a flavorful dressing. My partner had tagliatelle with clams. It was OK, but a little bland and dry. I had the much-hyped roast chicken. It was moist, including the breast--I'm assuming it was brined--and the skin was crisp and overly salty. Certainly a good roast chicken, but not one I'd go too far out of my way for. It came with no sides, just a good portion of chicken on a plate. The vegetables we ordered were apparently quickly stir-fried and on the crunchy side. Good, not exceptional. The pistachio cake with lemon curd was excellent--the best dish of the meal. Overall, not at all a bad meal, but not a memorable one. Service was eager if not polished. Given the reputation and price point, I'd never put it on my list of best restaurants in New York.
