Worst dining experience ever!!! I'd give them a negative star if i could. We were standing by the door waiting to be seated for about 10 minutes. I finally went up to ask the tall guy who was at the desk for help and was told he was busy. Barely gave me the glance and went back to counting money. He came back up and avoided any chance of eye contact. I went up to the lady at the bar wearing glasses, i asked if someone can assist us to get seated. This girl completely ignored me. We had to ask someone wiping the tables to see if she can help us and we finally got seated. This girl was kind and smiled at us. We were then approached by a rude black waitress (one with the colored hair) who grabbed ( yes, grabbed!) the menu from me while i was reading it, to point out that that was the drinks menu. She even got frustrated at me when i didn't write down the order on the paper (this was my first time eating here, i wouldn't know). Instead if helping me, she rudely asked me to write them. I stopped in here while staying nearby for business. I've heard good things and it looked like they have a good selection of vegetarian/vegan items. They have indoor and outdoor seating but my colleague and I opted to eat inside at the bar. Unfortunately the bar area where we sat hadn't really been cleaned yet nor was it a priority. Minus a star for that. Granted they were busy but yeah, wipe the bar off first. I ended up doing that myself. We got some beers and figured out the menu. Basically they have a few pads with all the options in columns. Choice of tacos hard/soft/bowl and many more options than I can list here. Choose your protein, BBQ tofu in my case and another was portobello mushrooms. Then a whole lot of additional choices. A bit overwhelmed I asked the bartender what he recommended in terms of all the toppings. He said stick with around 5 total including protein or else it'll just be a mess. So I did. The highlight was the sauces. Both of the sauces (dirty and Barrio hot sauce on separate tacos) were delicious. Great flavors and great heat. Everything was fresh in my tacos and cooked well. I rate the ambiance four out of five. I rate the service 3 out of five for being average. I rate the Three pitchers of Margarita we had a two out of five. Lastly, I rate the food an abysmal two out of five. Such an absolute letdown was the tiny tiny El pastor bowls we received, The tacos were lame AF. The sides of rice and beans were exceptionally small. Who in the world is stingy with rice at a nice Spanish spot? I think they give you about three or four tablespoons worth of rice for $1.50. This is not good. I love the playful willingness to try new combos of flavors and ingredients, but none of the food we got worked. We came for brunch and basically got one of each item on offer. They love the flavor of chipotle but the smokiness is overapplied and not offset with spice or acidity. It all tastes like the sum of its parts, as if someone opened a can of beans, another of corn, and dropped an egg on it. The ideas are good but the execution is just okay. This place is great for killing a taco craving at a good price. They also have excellent margaritas with lots of flavors and if you go during happy hour, they're all half price! I think it only applies to the general flavors if memory serves, but one of my favorites was a special flavor marg, the "Marigold." I like that this place does build your own tacos (you fill out a piece of paper with your meat/topping/shell selections, like at subway and they make them). The servers have always been really nice too, and I like the free chips and salsa before the food. It's a good happy hour place to come with coworkers, or just when wanting $3 tacos and $3 margs (during happy hour). It's a livelier vibe, but at at least at the Cleveland heights location (where I always used to go) they also had a nice outdoor patio. read more

I came to Barrio with a date after the Cavs game this week. We were seated immediately and were excited because we were very hungry and had a lot of energy--wanted to have a good time. We're both big fans of the queso, so we ordered that along with two bowls. As usual, the flavors were on point. I'm giving the place 3 stars, however, because we were both left a bit disappointed. The bowls came out in paper plates and looked a little sad, as if the ingredients weren't fully fresh and the food was made with haste rather than care. The most disappointing was the margarita pitcher we paid $30 for. As far as we could tell, we got an extremely (sickeningly) sweet pitcher of margarita flavoring, with no actual alcohol in it. I am someone who feels tipsy after a single High Noon, so the fact that I could down three glasses of "margarita" from the pitcher and not feel a thing except perhaps oncoming diabetes was extremely disappointing. It felt like we were actively being ripped off, which is not a great feeling to have in a restaurant. Barrio is a Cleveland staple. I typically frequent the Cleveland Heights location, but we ventured downtown for St. Patrick's Day parade and the service was still great despite the mad rush. Went here today after a yelp elite event at cocos Selfie Space. Service was quick and efficient, but I don't think our server smiled once. Other than that she did a good job taking care of us. Now on to the tacos.... I ordered two on soft corn tortillas, one chicken and one pulled pork. The meat and filings were good, but the tortillas were not heated up. They were literally cold uncooked tortillas from the fridge with the meat and filings added. Like cold to the touch, from the fridge. Having moved here from orange county, CA it's been really tough to find good Mexican food. I'm pretty sure it's not a Cleveland thing to not warm up the tortillas but who knows. The service was great and we didn't wait the 40 min expected. However the food is just not good. It's a make your own taco place but the quality is just poor. A friend recommended this place on my recent place to Cleveland and I'm so glad -- I love this concept of building your own tacos -- they had so many combinations of proteins, toppings, salsas and sauces! I built two of my own creation and ordered one off of the menu of their recommendations. The Coca Cola marinated steak is amazing and all of the salsas are so fresh. We were disappointed with the tacos in the city so far we thought we'd try this because it was the only thing and we were hungry. we were little confused with the menu however, my wife figured it out before I did. Easily one of my favorite taco places in all of Cleveland. The flavors of their tacos always surprise me with how much flavor is packed in each one. Top 5 recommended Cleveland restaurants for decently priced food for me. Go, go, go! My favorite tacos from "El Jefe's Selecciones" (one of the pieces of paper you fill out to order) are El Jefe and La Tierra. All time favorite is La Tierra. The happy hour is pretty awesome with half price margs and $1 off tacos. 3 tacos and a margarita will probably run you about $15 during the happy hour which is plenty! I usually eat 2 and take one home for later because they are very large. The atmosphere is a very bar/quick eats style atmosphere with the bar in the middle of the restaurant with 4 TVs to watch any games on and slightly above average noise level. I'm so happy that I finally visited the often talked about BARRIO. If you are looking for delicious TACO's then this is the place for you. The taco's are probably not as authentic as tacos from Mexico but they appeal to foodies and taste great. Barrio is located in downtown Cleveland close to 5th street Arcade and close to the many restaurants/bars along 4th street. Parking may be a pain because it is most street parking and paid lots. I was over at Voinovich park so I walked over from that park which took about 10 mins. TACO's -- The way ordering works here is that you first pick your tortilla, then your protein option (beans, tofu, chicken, etc), then you pick your toppings, cheese, salsa, and sauces. There is a sheet of paper at the table where you mark down what you want to order. You can pick from a selection of set tacos or make your own from the 'Build Your Own' menu. I choose tacos from the 'Build Your Own' menu. I got 1 chicken taco ($3) plus 1 shrimp taco ($3). The pre-made taco's are $4 each. For my chicken tacos, I chose the hard and soft shell combination ($1 extra) and this turned out to be delicious and it made me more full/satisfied than getting the traditional soft or hard taco shell. I added cilantro-lime rice to my tacos. For my 2nd taco. I ordered the Jalapeño Lime Shrimp that came with lettuce, corn, and tomatoes. I got this taco on a soft shell. Overall, the tacos were delicious so were the chips and salsa. The cilantro pesto sauce was my favourite to dip my taco's into as I ate them. The chicken and shrimp could have been seasoned better but they still tasted yummy. SERVICE -- Service was attentive. Before the tacos were served, the waiter (AJ) brought my friend (Ami) and I some warm chips with salsa to our table. He also asked what drinks we wanted and we just got water with lemon. This was our first time eating here, so instead of building our own, we opted for the El Jefe Vegan Tacos. Between the two of us we ate four of them. Delicious!! And three tacos (2 chorizo, and 1 chicken). The chorizo was a little on the greasy side and kind of messy, but very good. Initially tried coming here on a Saturday afternoon, however there was no parking available because of the Indians game being played close-by. Second attempt was on Sunday morning for brunch, where we were hit with a 20 minute wait because the wait staff was running late. Got a table inside for two people after getting a text to come back. After initially looking at the menu, the waiter came by to breakdown how the ordering process worked (it's not straightforward). Settled on the "El Diablo" Margarita ($7), Bacon Taco ($4ish), and a Build-Your-Own Taco ($4ish). Thankfully, they bring out some free chips and salsa to start that went well with the strong margarita (though not as spicy as the name suggests). My attempt to build a taco was an utter failure - chicken, cheeses, salsa, pork, onions, and pico - an unbalanced monstrosity of my own doing. Their tacos are stuffed with toppings and fairly large in size. By 2 or 3 tacos, you are full and can't possibly imagine having another one, but tacos are so flavourful that I just had to push through it and at least have one bite of every single one. We ordered 7 different tacos, which almost covers every single taco on their menu. None of the tacos disappointed me, but if I had to choose one to NOT get, I would probably skip out on the Mac&Cheese Nashville Fried Chicken one. Then there is the bar...meticulously stocked with all the basics and house made infused tequila that packs the heat. There are stoner shells, crunchy and soft or get a bowl packed full shrimp or tofu, chicken or beef or the December special surf and turf! Barrio's is one cool place. Probably the coolest on the block. The decor is fun with some really bad day of the dead drawings. But then again, art is subjective and maybe who knows some local artist may have done it so I shouldn't go there. The food and drinks are on a different level though. Its a made to order taco kind of a place where you select your shell, your protein, toppings sauces etc and viola, you get one amazing taco. They have some chef specials and some appetizers and they were amazing as well. The Mediterranean guac is out of this world. The cheesy elote was a bit different from what I know and expect but it wasnt all that bad. The drinks were also delish. My only complain are the really cheap flimsy plastic silverware. I've eaten here several times, and I did so recently because it was the only thing open near my hotel. Here's what I don't get: the tacos I get -- always vegetarian, usually with tofu -- are always served ice cold. Not hot. Not room temperature. Cold.
