Such child hood memories! I use to have these cream puffs with my grandmother when I was little. Had them a while back in San Francisco and was surprised to see a Beard Papa's in Midtown NYC. The store is very small, I do not suggest "dining in" at the location. However, the service was quick even though there was only one person behind the counter. The cream puffs are very generous with the vanilla fillings I got. I had the mocha, strawberry and chocolate cream puffs and they were all good. Very cute logo with bright yellow color, pretty eye catching. The store is pretty small yet neat. You can pick the flavor for shell and the flavor for filling. I ordered three, vanilla, strawberry and green tea. They offered discount for first time customer if you sign up for the reward program( make sure you scan the QR code on the banner outside the store, and add the reward card to your Apple wallet). I love how the filling doesn't taste too sugary or overly sweet, the texture of the cream is just perfect. Definitely would be a regular customer going forward. It's been at least 13 years since I last had Beard Papa's: long overdue is a major understatement. I've only tried the classic original with vanilla creme $3.60 and it is exactly the way I last remembered. Expect delicate puff pastries with a delicious creamy vanilla filling that is not too sweet. The kinks being that they had run out of all the fillings except original, ran out of both fondants, ran out out of the honey butter puff and the almond crunch. I was here at around 8:30pm, which means there were still a couple hours of work left yet most of the food items were out. :( The wait was also egregious!! I would definitely recommend ordering pick up through Ritual or calling in an order or something. The space is also tiny, I'd suggest to the owners that they maybe add a bench (so people can sit while waiting..) or a coat rack! At this point you may be wondering why I still gave it 4 stars still. And it's because this place fills their cream puffs so well! Some Beard Papas I've been to in California give me cream puffs that have been sitting out on the counter for god knows how long. I love that this location is so fresh (albeit the wait is way too long) and ugh that Creme Brulee cream puff was way too amazing. TL;DR: Wait is long and space is small, but cream puff is delicious. The pastry is super crisp and fresh here, and the store offers some exciting creations (s'mores and creme brulee?!) in addition to more classic flavors. I really like sticking to the basics here and recommend going with a honey & butter puff with vanilla filling. It tastes sort of like a DKA/Kouign-amann filled with delicate cream and is absolutely delicious. The location is pretty small and only has two chairs, so I wouldn't count on sitting to eat here. You get the treat of desert with a little less sugar than most American deserts. And love that you can get ice cream as your filling. The two drawbacks when I visited this location: first, there is only two chairs - so this is a take away location; and they didn't have all of the fillings available that are on their regular menu. I just tried a Beard Papa's Dulce de Leche creme puff with chocolate filling, it was a pleasant treat. Light pastry, not too sweet. The Carmel on top of the pastry was good but made the creme puff somewhat tough to eat. When I bit into the pastry a lot of the creme came off. I would like the Carmel to be more light. (7/8/20) ive always wanted to try this place because cream puffs from osaka definitely have a special place in my heart. i placed an order for pickup through grubhub, and when i came by the worker told me they needed some extra time because they were running behind on making the cream puffs. it was at the time when they just opened up, so i didnt really mind. i ordered a green tea eclair with green tea filling, but when after waiting an extra 15 minutes for my cream puff i realized that they messed up my order and gave me a green tea eclair with vanilla filling instead. i wasnt gonna say anything and i just ate what they gave me. honestly after all these inconveniences i was gonna just give this place 4 stars, considering the cream puff was still really tasty (but quite expensive- almost $5 with taxes). however, the size wasnt too small imo but definitely not as big as the cream puffs ive purchased from other places. i decided to give this place 5 stars because while i was eating my cream puff outside the worker came out and apologized for messing up my order, which he just realized. he let me keep the cream puff for free and remade my original order for me as well! so, technically i got 2 for the price of 1 (which was much more worth the money, granted it was a rare occasion). i appreciate their service and being honest and owning up to their mistakes. plus, the cream puffs really were delicious! the outside crust had the perfect amount of crunch and the filling inside was cold and refreshing. the green tea shell definitely was messy to eat and melted quickly, so it wasnt a fully enjoyable experience for me (i dont like eating things that are messy). im still gonna give this place 5 stars because i really was satisfied with my experience! not sure if i will come back in the future to try out their other flavors and fillings since it is on the pricier side, but these cream puffs really are the closest things you can get to the ones in japan! read more
