    churro puff
    Sravya V.

After getting hungry while waiting in line for a nearby jazz club, I stepped out of line to grab a snack at Beard Papa's. I wasn't totally sure what to expect, and was surprised to see a store centered on cream puffs. It was fun to think of the different combinations of puffs and creme, and I settled on a churro puff with chocolate filling. The warm puff and cool creme were tasty, and hit the spot while waiting for a spot in the jazz bar. I enjoyed the cinnamon sugar flavoring, but the actual puff and chocolate filling itself did not have much flavor. The store was small but clean, and had a small amount of seating available.

I miss the days when there was actually cream in the cream puffs ...

This isn't for this specific location but for beard papas at street fairs. Which really should have its own listing. But what would be the address? Got 4 for $20, only cause they were buy 3 get 1 free else 4 would cost $26- insane. But that's not why I'm upset. The cream was non existent at the Japan festival, see picture. I wasn't sure I was eating a cream puff or just some puff pastry. Super disappointing

Beard Papa's sells delicious cream puffs with fillings that are not too sweet such as matcha, vanilla, and chocolate. They offer a variety of cream puff shells to choose from and you honestly can't go wrong with any of them. But a favorite in my household is definitely the crispy almond shell. I appreciate that the shells are not soggy and that you can mix and match between the different shell type and fillings. I wouldn't get their iced matcha latte again though, it was way too milky, and there wasn't much matcha flavor in the drink. Definitely on the sweeter side.

I used to love cream puffs from here. Unfortunately, I feel like the quality has gone down. The cream puff was really crispy almost felt more like a croissant texture than a puff. The cream inside tasted really good and they did fill the puff well but unfortunately it didn't make up for the crispy puff. Staff was nice and they gave me the cream puff really fast.

Beard Papa's Créme Brûlée Cream Puff, slathered with delicious custard and topped with a disc of traditional hardened caramelized sugar

Beard Papa's is amazing!!! I've been eating this Japanese bakery's cream puffs since discovering them (at another location) in New York many years ago. Absolutely delicious! This E. 53rd St. location is small with only one café table with 2 chairs, so it's not geared for long stays or accommodating a big group. That being said, all I need is one cream puff to savor (or devour) as soon as I get it in my hand! One might think that it's pricey for the size, but the special varieties are totally satisfying and amazing! This time I tried Beard Papa's Crème Brûlée cream puff. OMG!!!! (See the pic.) Chock full of creamy custard and topped with a traditional Crème brûlée hardened caramelized sugar sheet. Fantastic!!! Test out Beard Papa's different fillings too, including their limited time ones. What a treat! Note - This location also has a loyalty program together with the East Village shop.... which is a tempting proposition that's a danger for me keeping trim.

Info so you can find them.

Feel they should open earlier since most puffs are sweeter. Should have better ventilation, very muggy and slightly smoky in there. Puffs were good. But they were out of one we really wanted to try (Honey butter). And we got there about an hour after they opened. Don't let them sit too long- get a little soggy. But still tasty.

Been wanting to check out this place for a while and when I finally did, I thought it was alright. We got 6 different cream puffs with different shells and different fillings. After eating a couple of them, I thought the cream puffs all started tasting the same even though the shells and filling of each cream puff is different. The flavors were just okay. The service was quick and efficient as the staff works to get you your order as soon as you place the order. Small indoor space and can get cramped easily.

Sweet treats from Beard Papa's make every day better. The perfect balance of rich and creamy cream without being too sweet keeps me coming back. This is my favorite spot if I need to get a cream puff. The variety of flavors and fillings means there's something for everyone. Today, we're trying them all! I love the creme brulee and matcha. You cannot go wrong with any of the flavors. So what is your favorite? Follow @spinx17 for more NYC food recs!

    Creme brûlée and vanilla

The store is super tiny but smells nice. I got the creme brulee with vanilla and I felt that it truly lacked flavor. My husband got the Oreo with ice cream and that was super tasty. If I'm back I'll definitely try one with ice cream instead. I also felt like it was super overpriced for what we got.

Sucks! The cashier didn't ask me what filling, just gave me whatever she has, shell is soft, filling too thick without vanilla taste.
    Irene C.

Worst puff I've ever had, plus worst service! Shell is mot crispy and vanilla cream does not taste vanilla at all and too thick. Ordered an Ube flavor then paid. The cashier didn't ask me what kind of filling, just gave me whatever she has until I asked her why you didn't ask me about filling. She said she thought I'm not the first time here. I'm first time here!! Also, Seriously?!?? That's your job to confirm the order, making sure it's correct!! You don't even know what's the filling that customer ordered, just giving her the leftover! Your money is very easy to make. She didn't give me any money back instead of asking me what's the flavor I want. I didn't want any replacement cuz it tastes not good at all. Shell is not crispy and filling does not have any vanilla taste at all and texture is too thick. $5.50 I paid for a lesson! Don't recommend here! There are many much better puff bakeries in the city!!

Puff Pastry Eclairs in different flavors
    Penelope M.

I came across these sweet stuff while in line to get into their next door neighbor, "tomijazz". It displayed a cute yellow banner waving me to come up, because it was cold and I was getting hungry. There was just a small counter inside and one small cafe table inside. The eclairs come in different flavors, the way mochi donuts do. So I tried the original, strawberry and ube. They may not be wrong when they claimed they make the best eclairs. The flavors I had was more of a glaze, frosting the top of their eclairs. Adorable! The puffs have a crispy shell stuffed with velvety eclairs, creamy but not so rich, so you won't tire of the sweetness. I paired mine with their Jasmine Green Tea. Then I headed back to the line.

so good light abd fluffy. the perfect combination of sweet and salty. will definitely be going back!

My friends decided they wanted an after-dinner treat and decided to have Beard Papa's cream-filled pastries. This company has been around for ages, and it was a nostalgic visit for those of us who had one near our college stomping grounds. My friends ordered the Ube flavor, but decided to wait until they got home to try them. I went with an Original, which is a vanilla cream-filled puff pastry. It tasted just like I remembered when back in college, so the recipe has not changed after all these years. The pastry is airy, but dense enough to hold up to the cream filling at the same time. The creamy interior is sweet, but not cloyingly so. It's just the right amount of sweetness you'll want after a meal.

To drink, I had a Hot Organic Super Matcha Tea for 4.95. It was alright tea, and I wish teas were included in the price point, as otherwise, this place feels pretty traditional. In terms of food, I only ordered from the seasonal menu, so I'm not sure how the rest of the dishes are, but from what I had, I would go back for a light traditional meal. My appetizer was the Dashimaki Tamago/だし巻まき卵たま, or sweet savory omelet with daikon for $6.98. This came with three pieces along with a little dollop of grated radish. The pieces had a light sweetness to them along with a bit of savoriness. They were juicy and a bit bouncy while maintaining some softness. This was standard and good. My main dish was the $19.98 Beef Tan Tan Udon, or ground sirloin beef, spicy broth, baby bok choy, kikurage mushroom, scallions, and sesame seeds. While I have preferred udon from spots like Raku, the udon had a mild chew to it, and they were still good. The broth had a mix of sweetness and spiciness with a nice depth of flavor. The vegetables inside tasted fresh, and the meat added some richness. This was good as well. I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to go here, but the food was good. If you're in the area and looking for no frills Japanese dining in a more comfortable atmosphere at pretty decent Midtown East prices, I would recommend this place.
