What a perfect place for a late lunch on a sunny sunday afternoon (whilst also avoiding the Super Bowl). We'd run 12 miles today and have run past this place many times now thinking we should try it out. After a shower and change, we arrived in search of some European flair, reasonable portions, great flavors and real food. We were not disappointed. Husband had the ham and gruyere baguette (perfect, simple, not messed around) and an unbelievably delicious almond croissant accompanied by a perfect macchiato. I had the onion and gruyere baguette and half a beet salad - both equally delicious. Wandered into the wine part post eating - look to have a good selection of local and european wines. What a wonderful surprise! I'm so glad Nishino and Arosa Cafe were closed. I don't know Madisen Park that well, but when I stumbled into the only open cafe - Belle Epicurean - fate was very good to me on a late Thursday afternoon! Hands down the best macaroons I've ever had! Melt in your mouth goodness! They're larger than most macaroons sold around here. The outside has just the right little crunch with the inside being the perfect constantly of airy and chewy. & the buttercream... so creamy and delicious! The best almond croissants I've ever had! They nice and flaky on the outside, with a little bit of crisp if you get it heated, and the inside is what's the winner. There a bit of a almond sort of butter/cream that is the perfect amount of sweet and makes the inside moist. So good, my boyfriend and I go here every weekend as it is up the street from our house. Their coffee is amazing too. I typically get their pumpkin spice or caramel lattes and theirs are the perfect amount of sweet. It's more focused on the flavor than anything. Love this place! Such a delightful stop! I stopped in before a walk through the Arboretum the other day and the server was very helpful and friendly. Not to mention the tasty coffee and macarons! Clueless staff. There is no way this is an "upscale" cafe, as some reviews suggest. I ordered earl grey and got a cup half filled with luke warm water, into which I was supposed to put a teabag myself. Please! This is not how you serve tea. We asked for a side of baguette with a bowl of soup and got a baguette in a paper bag to go. Had to explain to the guy behind the counter what a side of baguette is. They were equally stunned when we wanted butter to go with it and gave us only a tiny amount. The soup was too salty, and the strawberry financier tasted artificial. Oh, and like everywhere else you're supposed to bus your own table, marble-topped or not. There is little here that justifies the higher prices. read more

I've been holding my thoughts for a long time as I've wondered why the large pots out front are allowed to die off each summer? This review is for the French macarons. It should have been a red flag when I didn't see them on display, asked if they had any, and the person working there said "I think so, let me check," and then proceeded to get them out of a cardboard box stored in the fridge. It actually was a red flag, but I proceeded and purchased all 3 flavors out of curiosity. All 3 were a disappointment, of course. Stale. The pineapple was the better one. Strawberry and vanilla were hard, plastic knife was bending when I cut them to share. Terrible. The vanilla was worst, the taste was so bad. Never going back. read more

We love the Croque Madame at Belle Epicurean. Also, the Pain au Chocolat, Ham & Cheese Croissant, and the Twice Baked Almond Croissant are all excellent. I wanted a special breakfast to welcome our employees back into the office after being away for so long. So I ordered a large breakfast order with coffee service, and it did not disappoint! Everyone enjoyed the variety of quiches that I ordered, the breakfast sandwiches, the eggs with truffle salt (those are so the favorite of so many!), the pastries, and the croissants. I love that there is fruit salad, granola bars, and yogurt for our vegan and gluten free friends here. In the past, our clients and guests have enjoyed the food from Belle Epicurean (pre-pandemic), and I was thrilled to see that they were able to deliver downtown from their E. Madison Cafe. Outstanding set up, excellent customer service, great website with easy ordering, and an amazing breakfast that made everyone feel like they were in Paris. The coffee is wonderful too! Thank you to everyone there this morning (from the people who prepared it, to the delivery crew) for making our return to work breakfast celebration so spectacular. Most things are great here but I just bought a frozen family size portion of "Meatballs in Sauce" for $50. The ratio of bread to meat seemed like 70/30, we could see all the bread in each meatball. I had bought noodles as well to make spaghetti and meatballs for 3 people. There was only sauce coating each meatball, no extra inbetween to scoop out for each plate. I really wish the staff were friendlier and quicker, especially the male staff members. There's no sense of urgency when serving patrons and not a lot of appreciation either. I've never waited so long for such expensive coffee. The barista kept leaving his post, I had to remind him I hadn't received my coffee yet. I am saddened that Belle Epicurean's standards have fallen in the past few months. While the fresh good are still worth five stars, they've been keeping baked goods out past their prime. I went in for a few treats on a recent thursday night and was disappointed in the freshness for all three selections. The macaron was so stale that it was inedible. The almond cake had chewy frosting from sitting out too long. And the coconut cake was very dry. Granted, I bought these items at the end of the day. But there is no excuse for three different stale items from a bakery of this caliber. read more

The service is a bit slow and I'm not entirely sure that the staff there know how to make coffee, but I honestly don't care. I like to go here when I want to feel inspired. The decor is lovely and the back patio is beautiful. The coconut cake is unbelievable (I order a big one for special ocassions), but the rest of the food is fairly standard. If you want amazing baked goods, go to Bakery Nouveau, but if you want Parisian atmosphere in Madison Park, this is where you want to be. The service is neither impressive nor attentive. Coffee drinks are fine. The whole menu is a wee bit overpriced, but if you are just looking for a lovely place to share a cup of coffee or a light breakfast, it's enchanting. I have to give one star because when we arrived on Saturday for dessert at 8pm the doors were locked! The hours posted on the website and Yelp state that BE is open until 10pm. When someone came to the door and we asked, "Aren't you open until 10pm as stated on your website." The response was, "Sorry, there was a miscommunication." That left us a little confused. It takes forever just to get a cup of coffee since the person behind the glass counter seems to avoid acknowledgment of customers. Well-heeled Madison Park denizens sit at high chair-style tables while ordinary folks like us are ignored. Upon finally complaining, the brusque manager expelled us us from this place! This is one of those places that would be a problem if I lived a little closer. Everything (sweet and savory) looked so good. I got a cinnamon brioche roll, a red velvet petit four, and the flourless chocolate decadence. All were amazing. I liked the atmosphere too, very French and classy. They have the best Chai in town. All other Chai tea lattes taste the same (the same syrup from a single manufacturer I guess). In contrast, their house Chai is home made and extremely rich in Indian spices including cloves, cardamoms, nutmeg...etc. You can also buy the Chai mix in bulk. They also serve a great coffee from a superb roster (Forte). Their baked goods are good but way overpriced (A tiny mini croissant is 2.95). Baristas are either minimally trained or simply don't care about drink quality. There is no consistency in espresso drinks. The staff is largely unprofessional. A perfect addition to Madison Park, really to any village. I had what they call a bun of the month. They don't make buns like this anywhere in Seattle. Tasty to a point of being sinful. I went back the next day and had a baguette sandwich. I'll never think of a ham and cheese sandwich in the same way. I think they said it was Black Forest Ham. Really a special place.
