We were pretty full from dinner, but decided to stop in for 2 cupcakes and a hello dolly bar to go (the cramped seating inside and the benches outside were all taken). Cancelled a cake for my son's birthday party 30 mins before it was supposed to be delivered

the first time i came here was because i found out about how good their carrot cake was; i was left speechless because it was so good! the second time i came by, i ordered in store and paid with card. they also had some outdoor seating with 2 small tables set up. i'm unsure if they currently still have them set up outside, though. apparently, they are also well known for the banana and ice box cakes, so i decided to visit them a second time. if i'm being completely honest, i wasn't that impressed, especially since both slices were around $8 with tax. 9/9/20 -banana cake slice: this was the more disappointing cake of the two that i ordered. the banana flavor was pretty strong and the cake itself had the right amount of sweetness, but i was thrown off by the texture. it wasn't really soft and honestly felt dense like pound cake. i felt like the cream cheese icing was overly sweet, but there wasn't much icing on the slice anyway. definitely wasn't worth the $8, even though the slice was pretty big. it was a shame because i usually love banana flavored sweets! (3/5) -ice box cake slice: this one was great and would've been refreshing to eat on a summer day. it tasted pretty similar to a typical ice cream cake, but had less structure to it? obviously they didn't use ice cream in the cake; instead, they used whipped cream between chocolate wafer cookie layers. i loved how this basically tasted like a cold cookies and cream cake! it was also on the sweeter side as well, but i didn't mind it. the only downside of this slice was obviously its price. the cake slice portion for this one was really small for some reason; i would say it was only 3/4 of the size of the banana cake slice that they gave me. but, i definitely didn't regret buying it, even though $8 for one tiny slice is kind of ridiculous. after all, i couldn't stop eating it and basically finished the whole slice in one sitting! (4.5/5) overall, this place sells pretty good cakes. i'm unsure about their other sweets, since i've only tried three things on their menu. their cake slices used to only be around $6, and i probably would've given this place 4.5 stars if their food was cheaper. this place will definitely drain your wallet, but it's okay to treat yourself! my favorites that i would recommend you must try are the carrot cake and ice box cake. i unfortunately don't see myself coming back any time soon, but i can tell why this is a classic bakery in nyc! read more

I usually love love love Billy's. Its my go to spot for sweet treats when in the city. I really cant wait until the pumpkin cheesecake comes back in the fall but this time I got the strawberry cheesecake and a key lime cheesecake. I hate to say it because I love Billys but it was not good. The crust was dry and tasteless and Im assuming they mixed in fresh strawberries in the mix but it didnt taste good. It was bitter maybe the strawberries werent sweet?? idk but its still my go to spot lol just need to try something different next time. First introduced by a classmate at a midterm NYU celebration/toga party of our Master's program titled "Half done, half dressed", I was first introduced to the yummy treats and have not been able to stop coming back since. Billy's is a great alternative to other more expensive, hyped up cupcake eateries around the city. Billy's is not the cheapest either (rising with every season) @ $2.00 a cupcake, but occasionally their cupcakes taste phenomenal when fresh and are subject to becoming bland and dry from sitting on the shelf for too long. The service has been cold at times while overly helpful in other times. All in all, the mix of two evils balance each other out enough to where its safe to come back every once in awhile despite its inconsistency in a few areas. The seating area is practically non-existent with the exception of a couple of tables, so make sure to order for pickup. For all cupcakes, sometimes reheating them for 5-10 secs makes a world of a difference. And during the summertime in the uber-muggy NYC weather, this place is wonderfully air conditioned, making it an ideal spot to sit down and enjoy their creative desserts. read more

Billy's is an old favorite. I used to buy a dozen and freeze it, eating it slowly, when I didn't live in the city. One of my fellow cupcake lovers and I were recently in that part of town and decided to pay this place a visit... for gifting purposes. We ended up also getting some things. I'm impressed that they have more than the usual chocolate/vanilla/red velvet. And they have chocolate icebox cake. I just got a slice of the vanilla with pink frosting. Sometimes I crave the sickly sweet cupcakes. For those who complain about these homemade style cupcakes being too sweet... go elsewhere. read more

I came here after seeing someone walk on the street with a cute "Billy's Bakery" bag-actually, my boo noticed it. He's such a sucker for sweets :P Anyways, my office likes to buy cakes from the same nearby store in Queens, so I thought-why not switch it up? I immediately volunteered to buy the cake this time, so I can try some new venues and still get reimbursed for it (sneaky, I know). Figured I'd give Billy's Bakery a try. This place is a bit small, with just a couple of tables to sit at. The line kept coming in, and there were two bits of pieces to sample (none were good, just pieces of cake w/o the frosting). I ordered the ice box cake for $32 (inscriptions have a $2 charge, so I said no thanks). The guy took it out and whoops...he dropped it on the floor. Then he took it to the back (there were no other ice box cakes on display). He came back and we checked-it looked normal (perhaps there are tons in the back, or it just got refrosted?). Either way-I brought it to work and it was enough to feed 15 people. The cake is small, but super thick and tall. It was like eating an oreo shake, very filling so you don't need to have much. However, it wasn't that delectable or tantalizing to the senses. My boss described it as "heavenly," but I've had better cakes. Free pumpkin whoopie pie via Scoutmob until 11/21/11! It smells like a little piece of heaven when you walk into Billy's Bakery. All the goodies were perfectly frosted and looked so yummy! Unfortunately, I had just come from the biggest brunch ever, but wanted to check this place out and claim my freebie. The pumpkin outside was nice and pumpkin-y. A little dense, but still soft. Hubby and I wrapped up an excellent double date here, lingering over a GINORMOUS slice of coconut cake and hefty peanut butter chocolate bar. Both were very heavy and decadent. I didn't sample any of the cupcakes, but I thought the coconut cake was a little on the drier side (a giant cake no-no) so this place gets 3 stars. We were able to snag one of the only 2 tables. Scratch that, I probably have been much more humiliated but still, I was a bit embarrassed and at least this time I didn't wake up covered in mystery fluids! Although friendly, I have never seen people move any more slowly than the workers here. How long does it take to give someone a cookie? I did have a ginger butterscotch cookie which somewhat redeems the place. I regret every time I walk in here and have to deal with such horrible customer service from the manager. She is incredibly rude and unwelcoming. I even witnessed her being curt to her employees while they were helping me. I don't understand how you can work in a bakery, a place people go for delicious treats and a joyful experience, and be in such an awful mood ALL the time. My family and I enjoy the cookies and cupcakes a great deal, we just wish the customer service was much more positive so we don't walk out feeling awful every time. read more

Love this little shop and the banana cream cheese cupcake! Unfortunately when we arrived around 8pm, they were all sold out of the vanilla/vanilla flavor, which looks really great in photos (reminiscent of Magnolias)! The cake in the banana cupcake was very moist though, and the frosting was just what a cream cheese frosting should be. The line was quite tolerable; it was probably a 15 minute wait, which wasn't bad at all. We were also very entertained by the lady expertly frosting the cakes by the front window. My only critique is that any really good cupcakery should know that the to-go boxes need to have separate slots for each of the cupcakes so the frosting doesn't get mixed and mashed! Magnolias does this right, so there's really no excuse for Billy's not to know better. read more

A friend recommended this bakery to us after I told her I didn't really care for the cupcakes at Magnolia. When we stopped by, there were already a few people in line so had to wait about 10 minutes, Good thing we showed up when we did because a few minutes later the line was all the way out the door and pass the little patio in front! Cute little place with delicious looking goodies all around - it was pretty cool watching one of the employees expertly putting the frosting onto a new batch of cupcakes. Service was ehh....not the friendliest I've ever encountered - could I at least get a "hello" or smile for trekking all the way over here from Time Square? Ordered one carrot cupcake and one yellow cupcake with chocolate frosting. I was super nervous when I saw them wrapping it up in wax paper and putting in a paper bag - aren't they suppose to be in boxes with little cutouts to hold them in place? Sigh....at least they wrapped it in wax paper I guess. But when we got home and pulled them out to eat, they were all smushed :( Aestethics aside, we didn't really care for the taste of either of the cupcakes either. The cake itself was really rich and heavy and dense - I like my cupcakes to be on the lighter side. The frosting to cupcake ratio was off - there was way too much frosting and the outer layer of the frosting had already started crystalizing - not good. I was supremely disappointed with these cupcakes - we didn't finish either one. With so many other great bakeries in New York, I think I will pass on this one next time I'm in town. read more

But, with a hip new bakeshop on every corner, each with the requisite endorsement from New York Magazine/Daily Candy/Size 0 Actress, how is a picky palate to choose? Fear not, dear readers, NoshGirl is on it. My first stop of my multi-cupcake tour was to Billy's Bakery. Walking into Billy's Bakery is like taking a step 50 years back in time. With locations in both Chelsea and Tribeca, Billy's offers pies, cheesecakes and other goodies, all in a old-fashioned kitchen setting. Despite these tempting choices, we were focused on a goal - finding the perfect cupcake. My eating buddy and I shared a chocolate frosting/vanilla cake and a vanilla/vanilla. The cake for each was neither too crumbly nor dense, but the buttercream frosting was a bit too sweet for my taste. There was so much confectioners sugar in the frosting that each bite had a slightly powdery consistency! While I certainly won't turn down a Billy's cupcake if placed in front of me, the texture of the frosting would make me think twice....then eat it. Stay tuned for more of my cupcake adventures... I wonder what happened to Billy's. I remember this bakery from when I used to intern for this company and they would order cupcakes from them. From what I remember they used to taste phenomenal. But now they don't taste the same. I haven't had Billy's for years, and then I went there last week, expecting the same delicious cupcakes from back then. However, when I bought one of their red velvet cupcakes, which is way overpriced, I felt rather cheated. $4/4.50 for a cupcake is quite ridiculous and it's not even like the size of a Crumb's cupcake. My sister got the lemon one and it was way too sugary. Overall Billy's cupcakes are OK they're not as good as how they used to be and they're not worth the price in my opinion. read more

The best cupcakes in Manhattan! Always a moist, rich cake, and their frosting is just the right amount of sweet. Their pumpkin bars are to die-for. I've tried many cupcake places (Sugar Sweet Sunshine, Crumbs, Magnolia, Buttercup, Cupcake Cafe, and I forgot the name of the place but the place in Chelsea Market...) and I always end up back at Billy's. Despite having a huge dinner at Blossom across the street, there was certainly more than enough room to be made for delicious cupcakes from Billy's Bakery. Luckily we got there before a line started forming outside the door of the small walk-in shop around 8PM on a Sunday night. We ordered three cupcakes to share: Red Velvet, Banana Nut, and Chocolate. All three were tasty though the red velvet was certainly my favorite! A rich, moist red cake with a perfectly whipped cream cheese frosting - was quite a tasty treat! I may have to say that this is the best red velvet that I've had so far in the city. Though the flavors are fairly standard for cupcakes (unlike Spot, Sweet Revenge or even Crumbs), Billy's Bakery does a solid job at traditional cupcakes. We enjoyed dessert here on a Tuesday night. There was no line at that time. We ordered the mint chocolate and banana cupcakes along with a slice of the ice box cake. I found it all to be reasonably priced. Our desserts and a bottle of water came out to $12. Since it wasn't busy we were able to enjoy our treats at one of the tables inside instead of out in the muggy summer weather. The cupcakes were classic in their aesthetics, moist in texture, and sweetly divine in flavor. Being that I am such an icing fiend, I especially love how generous they are with the icing. Overall, I found billy's cupcakes to be much more enjoyable then some of the other hyped-up cupcakeries in the city. Unfortunately, we were too stuffed to finish the ice box cake which tastes just like an ice cream sandwich. read more

I dropped by here for a dessert fix. The man working at the counter was very friendly and helpful. I ended up getting his recommendation of the butterscotch gingerbread whoopie pie. It was a solid 4/5 - a little to the sweet side due to the butterscotch chips but still a nice change from the classic chocolate chip cookie. The ginger/cinnamon spice did cut into some of the sweetness - making it a near perfect combination. Since it came out from the refridgerated section, the whoopie pie was a little hard to bite into. The buttercream sandwiched between the cookies was a little too firm for my liking but still worked well with the overall pie. read more
