No lines and no crowds on a rainy day morning with plenty of available parking spots in the huge lot. Nothing attractive on the outside in this old popular plaza. The place turned out great with the old fashioned retro red color style interior and the experience was wonderful. Good vibes and positive feelings when walking into it. My lady server provided excellent service and the Hispanic male worker was quick and efficient. Place is clean and menu had good variety of selections. Breakfast is served all day while lunch items start at 11am. My breakfast was very fulfilling and total was $25.30 with everything included. I paid in cash and tipped them $5. Loved my sweet lady server. There was another older woman at the cash register. She's a local as well. I really enjoyed the stop. I had the Fajitas Omelette breakfast and the steak meats in it were very generous. Delicious breakfast exactly as I had expected. My onions green peppers potatoes were perfect with a side of salsa. Sourdough toast was delicious with the garlic butter taste. I really came for my favorite hot chocolate with whipped cream in the morning. I do miss big American breakfasts, especially in these old fashioned and traditional retro spots. Love it. Why didn't I visit this place much earlier? Because they're always busy or full inside and the plaza parking is usually congested with heavy traffic here. Overall, I love the vibes and the service. It's one of those places where you can just have normal casual conversations with the staffs working inside if you are open to it. Beautiful diner. Yes, I will be revisiting in the future. If you love huge food portions, there's great value here. One plate can easily be shared between two people. Nice.

We moved to Milpitas about a year ago and my son started going to Mil's and is a current 'Regular'. They have good food. So after a while, my husband and I started going there and we too started going there pretty regularly for breakfast, at least once or twice a week. All in all, between the family we drop a few hundred a week. And we do tip well. Most of the wait staff knows us. Today, my husband had to stop on his way home to use the restroom. He doesn't look homeless or unkempt in anyway. When he asked, they told him he couldn't unless he's a 'paying customer'. This was to a newer employee he hadnt seen before. He proceeded to explain that we eat here regularly and she still said no. He asked to speak to the manager, who does know him. He too said no. I find it ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS that for a supposed family atmosphere restaurant, they couldn't extend a small courtesy. What exactly was it going to take away from them? As mentioned, we drop a good chunk of change there, and they didnt want to help out a patron that frequents the restaurant? Well, have no fear, we will NEVER darken your doorstep EVER again.

One time, I recall getting the chilaquiles and asking for extra habaneros and asking if their chef had a secret hot sauce that was stronger than "white people spicy." Miriam brought me a little ramekin of a pepper sauce puree that the chef prepared - and it was EPIC. I don't ask for that every time, but you know whoever was on the line took the request seriously and actually had some fun making my mouth burn. I can't tell you how appreciative I am of their willingness to "play" in the kitchen. Today, I went for breakfast and ordered the Carne En Su Jugo for my first time. Not just here - first time ever eating it anywhere. I had totally forgotten to ask them to make it spicy! I asked Miriam if there was anything they could do to spice it up. She assured me they could. Then I received it. And I tasted it. And it was cathartic. The chefs prepared a PERFECTLY spicy stew, and I downed that whole thing in 7 minutes. We thought that was a thoughtful and considerate gesture. As for myself, I ordered a breakfast burrito with bacon, sausage, eggs, and cheese. Kenny himself is another reason to visit. He's very friendly and chatty. The hostess told us they had no tables, and we could sit at the bar. My daughter stated she would rather be seated at a table, and we could wait. Three customers were walking past us, and the hostess said we could have their table. We were immediately seated in a booth, and we noticed there were at least five empty tables around us, peculiar. Whatever, we had time to look and decide what we each wanted. When our waiter came for our orders, he was quick and efficient. We didn't have to wait long for our meals and drinks to arrive. We generally liked our food, but the country potatoes were a little too firm, and seemed like they weren't cooked all the way through. We had to wait awhile for refills on our drinks. We caught the hostess walking by, and asked if we could get refills and napkins. She said okay, but brought only napkins, and we waited some more for refills on coffee and water. The hostess seemed a bit brusque, on the other hand our waiter was, quick and professional. I will drive a little further to the Alameda location, because the Newbury location is not as great, or team conscious as the other location.

The menu is really cure because it looks like a news paper. It was kind of cute looking around around the room and seeing everyone reading their news papers. As for the food, they serve breakfast all day. But I decided to get the Bob's Big Bear Burger because I saw one of the servers carrying it out, on a cart, to another customer and had to give it a try. The price was appealing too, $9.99. It was huge and had to end up taking half of it home. However, there were people around me who did finish it. It tasted ok but the size is what made it. My friends got the chicken fried steak, California omelet, and the eggs benedict. They all seemed to enjoy their food. On the way in we saw these huge bear claw pastries so of course we had to get some on the way out. I got a traditional bear claw and a oatmeal chocolate chip cookie. I gave the bear claw to my parents and they said it was really good. I ate the oatmeal chocolate chip cookie and it was really good as well. TIP- if you want to enjoy their bear claws DON'T look at the description card at your table It tells you the calorie count and that's what detoured me from trying it. The reason I gave them 4 stars is because of the wait time. It took for ever to order and even longer to get our food. The waitress was nice but the waiting time could be approved upon. My family and I have been visiting this Black Bear Diner location for 10 years and they never disappoint! The service at this location is always consistent and they offer very generous serving sizes. I remember a few years back, I was dining with my family here the day after Christmas and left my key chain on the booth when I was leaving - one member of their staff picked up my lost keys and kept them secure and safe until I was able to pick them up. When I arrived to get my keys, there was no confusion or delay - the server at the cash register was able to immediately locate my lost keys based on my brief description. At my family's most recent visit, Sandra (our server) was friendly and attentive, checking in on our table 2-3 times throughout our entire meal. She was very accommodating, quick to respond to any requests we had, and noted our requested order modifications with perfection and ease. When it was time to pay, another member of staff offered us a stamp card so that we can earn a free meal for one person with repeated visits in the future! This is just one recent example of how the entire staff at this Black Bear location is dedicated to continually improving the diners' experience, delivering the best service they can, and making diners feel at home no matter how busy they are. read more

Came into Black Bear Diner hungry... left emotionally attached to our server, Juanita. First off, the food? Incredible. Eggs cooked perfect, hashbrowns crispy enough to make you question your life choices, and biscuits so good I briefly considered ordering a second plate "for the table" (it would not have been for the table). But let's talk about the real MVP: Juanita. This woman had my coffee refilled before I even knew I needed it. I'm pretty sure she can read minds or has some kind of diner superpower. Every time I looked down--boom--full cup again. I felt taken care of on a spiritual level. My kids really like Black Bear. Not sure if they like the theme or the food. Have only had breakfast and it's pretty darn good. The portions are very big and the kids menu has a lot of items. If your a family looking for a breakfast house this would be a good option to try over Denny's and IHOP. Service here is very spotty. The wait staff are forgetful and not the most attentive. You can always tell a good breakfast place when they make sure to keep your coffee filled. Here they seem too busy running around. When you have to flag down the server to fill your cup more than twice that is not a sign of good service. Not to mention always asking for water. It's not the cheapest. The food is better than Denny's but you probably end up paying 35% more. My kids like the place so I'll always be coming back. I just wish they would fine tune the service. read more

Classic, cozy diner with good food and service. I wouldn't consider the food worthy of five stars, but some of their menu items like the black bear wraps are still really delicious. I also suggest trying some of there breakfast plates, my particular favorite being the California benedict (I think that's what it's called) that comes with fresh avocado on top. Service is very close to five stars imo. Sometimes they're a bit slow making the food, but all the waiters/waitresses here are extremely nice and attentive to your table. I should also mention that it's a great diner to take the family out if you have young kids. They have a kids menu for them and I'm sure they'll be amused by all of the pictures and bear carvings that are around. Hell, it still amuses me sometimes lol. with the last reviews I wasn't sure about going but I thought I would give black bear a chance. We loved the wooden bears,We were greeted when we walk in the door by the Manager I believe her name was Christine. It seamed like a very friendly environment. Are server Tony took good care of us and our food came out pretty quick. Half way threw our meal another manager Brandon came to check in on us and asked if we needed anything else, I over heard the table behind us talking to him and he had great interaction with their kids. This place is great for family's and the employees really care about the customers. The only bad thing is the portions are to big, so it means extra time at the gym. I am glad I didn't listen to the negative reviews, I guess you can't please everyone but I was very pleased and will be back. read more

I am so happy went to at the black bear to eat and left my purse. I had no obvious identification in my purse but a very nice and courteous waitress name Sandra searched and searched and searched through my purse till she found a piece of paper with my son's phone number onit and a letter with my name on it made the connection because of the last name and called him thank you so,so,so much to Sandra because most people would not have gone that far to find out who it belong to . She called me and asked me to come and pick it up because there was no identification it and noted she would wait for me to pick it up when I arrive sure enough she was there waiting for me with the purse. The chorizo was good and moist not over cooked. the potatoes was great. i asked to be a little more crispier but they turned out just fine regular. I'll be back again. my only concern I have is that I wish they use a regular biscuit mix like bisquick or something similar. The biscuits they have are more like a cake. I wouldn't call that biscuit exactly. if your making biscuits for the masses, I would think bisquick would be a good choice, you just add water you take spoonfull and dab it on a baking sheet and put it in an oven Or pillsberry buiscuits are good as well. My experience was good. I also like thier roast beef dinner as well. my server was jaunita. Came in on MLK day and sat in Sandra's section. She was very friendly and quick to help me. I noticed they were pretty busy and she let me know right away that it might take a bit longer than usual. I watched as she served everyone around me and she was very busy but still always stopped to refill my soda and make sure I was ok. This is about my 3rd visit here and I've had nothing but wonderful waitresses and the food has tasted fresh and cooked to my specifications. Fannie the manager also came around and asked how I was doing and she was also very friendly and recommended the bread pudding. 10/10! Delicious!! I've been to the one in Gilroy many times before, but it has been at least 5 years since the last time I've been there. I've only ever had breakfast here and in the Gilroy location so I can't vouch for anything else. What I can say is that my meal was great but the pancakes, although large and fluffy, just didn't do it for me. The eggs were fine, the sausage was good, the bacon was extremely good and the hashbrowns were nice and crispy. The hashbrowns are done in strips, very similar to STACKS in campbell, but with much less seasoning which is fine since some people prefer to add their own level of salt and pepper. my grandma, uncle, and i come here for breakfast whenever we have time. we prefer this location over the others because the service is better in our opinion (oh who said that??? must be the wind). the music volume is just right with peak song choices, and we often stay at our table for a while because of how comfortable the environment is. plus, the food portions allow us to yap freely (cuz they feed y'all GOOD!!). nothing out of the ordinary for this particular review! this place always hits. for example, our server for today, jorge, was wholesome and delivered pretty quick service. cannot stress enough how the service is CONSISTENTLY excellent. :) coming from someone who used to work in foods, i see you guys!! best diner to be honest. ^^ read more

She was incredibly personable and friendly from the moment we sat down, just one of those people who makes you feel taken care of without overdoing it. And I'm not exaggerating... after she took our order, the food showed up fast. Like "did they already have this cooking?" fast. Everything came out fresh, hot, and exactly what you want when you're hungry. My wife ordered the skirt steak, and I went with Joe's Hobo Omelette. Both were absolutely on point. I went here on a Monday around 11 and it was busy but not crowded. We were seated immediately and our coffee came quickly. This was my first time going to a Black Bear Diner and although the theme was cheesy I loved it. I wish we could have held onto the menu longer to read the cute fake newspaper stories! I ordered an omelette and was shocked when it arrived because portions here are HUGE. The biscuit alone seemed like it could feed a family of 4. The fruit was fresh and food was delicious. You get what you pay for here: decent food, okay service. The server forgot butter for my biscuit and when I requested it he brought 3 cups of butter so no shortage here. What went well? Actually the customer first with Juanita. For me it's important how a server interacts with me first. First impressions is important. No matter how tired a worker is the attitude reflects on how they serve a customer. Juanita had a friendly smile and she engaged with mini conversations as if I was a regular. I love that. Secondly, the quality and quantity of my country fried chicken omelette was so great; I had left overs to bring home! My sister and I had a great lunch and best experience with Juanita. I've gone here a few times but it's always for breakfast. We celebrate today mother's day, my server as always the same running and busy guy, he always manage to give an excellent and friendly service (maybe he's co owner or something because he's passionate about his job) . Coffee and water always filled (without asking) but the best of all, he treat my mom like a queen, thanks Marcos, mom really fell in love with you, talking about our meal I just had my ultimate favorite joe's omelette. The wait on Mother's Day was a bit longer, but they get to everyone as soon as they can. The decor is a bit dated, as is their furniture. However, we aren't worried about it. We know we're going to get good food and healthy portions. Parking is plentiful in the lot. They do share it with other businesses, but we've never had an issue finding a spot to park.
