Being from Alaska, I was really looking forward to this place. I was missing the style and decor. A few of my colleagues and I ordered for lunch from their website and I went to pick it up. I set the pick up time for 11:15 and arrived on the dot . My first impression was that they do not keep to-go orders under a warmer; they are left in a brown bag on the counter. I don't know how long our food was waiting, but that explains the room temperature dishes. This also includes a salad that they put in the same bag with hot dishes. Why would someone do this? To make matters worse with the salad, they didn't include the dressing, even though the hostess told me everything was in the bag. Dry lettuce for lunch! But now, let's chat about my entree - the meatloaf... it's pretty much inedible. I took a few bites to put something in my stomach; but it's really dry (probably a few days old if I had to guess). I noticed they add celery and carrots to their meatloaf too - eww. If the meat was any good, you wouldn't need that much filler. Essentially, I paid $12.37 for mashed potatoes and a burnt and dry onion ring. The coleslaw was warmer than room temp, and it was bitter. I know my standards for food are very low; and taste is subjective. But of the three of us that ordered here for the first time, we all came to the same consensus of having no desire to return. I have to admit... this was probably one of the worst dining experiences I've had since moving to San Antonio 8 months ago. I wanted to give this place 2 stars but really just can't warrant it even after trying to look at the positives. Below is my detailed review/ experience but for a quick summary.... - Staff does not know the menu and doesn't know which items they have/ don't have - Food took 1+ hour to come out ... and came out incorrectly - Service was awful (I had to ask for a refill on water 3+ times, dirty dishes were never removed from our table, etc.) - Portion sizes are huge, but food was below average tasting We arrived at 2:30PM on a Sunday and were told it would be about an hour wait which wasn't a problem and something we kind of expected. After about an hour, we did receive a text that our table was ready and we headed in to be seated. Once seated... it took quite awhile to have our waitress come and get our drink order. Because it was taking so long, we placed our full order along with our drinks... this is where all the problems began. It seemed like anything we ordered, the waitress responded with "we're out of that". From soups (all soups), to iced tea, to some of the main-meal components... it was constantly repeated "we're out of that". While frustrating, we changed the orders as we went and tried to be reasonable about it all. Another issue for me was that our waitress really had no idea what came with the meal and would make up answers when asked questions. If you tell me something comes with my meal and then it doesn't end up coming... you can't just say "guess I didn't really know". Not to mention, we had to ask multiple times for our food to be checked on as it took over an hour after ordering for our food to come. We all got even more mad when the table next to us (seated after us) was served iced tea, soup, etc and didn't seem to be having the issues we were. They had a different waitress though so service seemed to be the larger issue. We ordered the prime rib dinner (came out well done when rare was requested), the Grizz and the Bob's Big Bear Burger with the intent to all share bits and pieces. All of the portions were huge which was nice, but that's the only thing to rave about. When the prime rib issue of being well done when rare was mentioned, our waitress brought a plate and fork over and grabbed the prime rib off my mother's plate and said another would come out later... a bit weird to handle it that way. This dinner did come with a slice of pie and I will say that was very good.... just the pie. For the Grizz, the sausage, ham and eggs were great! Sadly, the hash browns and pancakes were not. The hash browns were soggy and the pancakes were a bit hard as if they had been precooked and just microwaved. Based on how it looked when it first came out, I was expecting it to taste much better. For the Bob's Big Bear Burger with thousand island dressing and mayo removed... it was pretty good (by far a great burger but much better than the other dishes)! Truthfully, the only item I tried that I would consider reordering. All in all, each meal had something that was good/ decent as a part of it but the overall meal was lack luster or below average AND the service was the bigger issue. We will not be returning to this location or any other Black Bear Diner and wouldn't recommend it. read more

First off, orange juice is fresh squeezed! Order it for breakfast and taste for yourself. I had a good first impression based on the log cabin motif which I suppose is native to Mt. Shasta. Parking lot was full and there was a surge of customers trying to get in and out so be patient. Employees were nice and I saw them hustling, servers, bussers, hostesses, everybody in constant action to care of business. I like to see that. We waited about 10 mins for a table. I love that they have a tray at the tables which include ketchup, sweeteners, jellies, salt and pepper, a variety of hot sauces and steak sauce. Also they have plenty of creamer and butter on the table. The food was average and what you would expect at a diner. The coffee tasted burned, over roasted, so put alot of sugar to hide that. The sausage had tons of anise seeds, maybe they spilled a bottle when they were making it, but could not eat. Our server replaced it with bacon. Overall, nice place. Walking in on a Saturday morning and very easy to get a table early, I noticed as we sat there it got more packed. The little store up front is cute and full of bear related items. 12/09/22 Very crowded at 6:30pm. We waited about half an hour to be seated. Liberty was our server. After the meal, we decided it was a 'Super Denny's'. The menu is fairly large. Many breakfast items, lunch and dinner. Several of the entrees are offered as 'full course' which adds soup or salad and a corn muffin. The 'lesser' version does not include these items along with less entree. I ordered what I thought was the smaller pot roast and the husband ordered a combo of sirloin slices and chicken strips. I received the large entree pot roast but didn't really realize this until the end when I left most of it. I remarked to Liberty that if this is the small version, how big is regular? She said this was the regular. I pointed out I didn't receive the extra items. She asked if I wanted them to go? Damn, why not just charge me for the small?? Very average experience. We got there around 6pm on a Saturday and it was close to full but we were seated immediately. The menus come as newspapers which is cool but they get very large when you expand them. There are a lot of options. Our server was, ok. She did not check on us often. Had to ask for refills. She also left dirty plates on the table. My meal came with a salad and cornbread but since I turned down the salad she decided I did not need cornbread until I asked for it. Asked for A-1 sauce with my meal and she brought an empty bottle. But she was gone so long I ended up eating it without so it wouldn't get cold. Hope there are better servers there. As for the food, I ordered the prime rib which is only available or on Friday and Saturday. Sides were mashed potatoes and I ordered grits, later was told they were out so settled for fries. My son got chicken and waffles. My younger son had chicken tenders. And my son's mother had the chicken fried steak. The prime rib was dry, which is why I ordered the A-1. Needless to say I ate it dry. Mashed potatoes were lukewarm and the fries were good. Everyone else seemed to enjoy what they had. I heard good things so I was pleased for that. This was a very average experience for me. Service was lacking but most of the food was good. Inside is pretty large and all the tables were filled. There is enough space in between where you don't feel crowded. They are still new so maybe the server is growing into learning what she should do. Went to this location and ordered the fish n chips. The fish was disappointing. I probably could've done better with Mrs. Gordon's. A little fishy and totally unimaginative. She only got one plate because she said it was similar to fish sticks. - Ribs were so tough it was difficult to cut with the steak knife The meat got stuck in your teeth and gums and before you can take it out (floss it out at home) it caused teeth separation similar to having your braces tightened and gave me a headache. So we decided to give this place a shot. We went in on a Friday evening and it wasn't packed, so that should have been a sign. There was no wait. Our server was very friendly and got a our beverages (they only serve Pepsi products - a big bummer). I tried the chicken fried steak, baked potato, coleslaw and salad with corn bread muffin. The muffin was actually flavorful and moist. Unfortunately, the only butter they serve comes in individual packets that are refrigerated, so it didn't melt on the cornbread. The baked potato was a baked potato, hard to mess up, though I did order it with extra butter and I had to ask for extra butter because it didn't come with it. Of course the butter they brought - cold packets - a major downer. The salad was a salad - not bad and not great. They were out of tomatoes. The chicken fried steak was okay. Not a bad flavor but not a great flavor. The coleslaw was a unique one with both mayo and vinegar - I absolutely loved it - honestly the best part of the meal! My wife had the meatloaf, mashed potatoes with gravy and green beans. The meatloaf wasn't great but not bad. The green beans with bacon were nothing to write home about but not bad. The mashed potatoes and brown gravy were odd - they had big chunks of onions in the mashed potatoes which we were not fans of. Overall, it looks like their business model is to make up with the lack of great taste by giving gigantic portions, which some people might want. They do give military discount, which was nice. First off let me say, the food is always delicious - but the service needs work for sure. We've been three times and each time it's taken 10+ minutes to get greeted. At first I thought it was because they had just opened, but it's been a while and this is still a problem. I ordered the smaller portion of chicken fried steak and split it with my boyfriend. I will say that it is absolutely amazing. I'm very hesitant with chicken fried steak because most places it comes out extremely soggy- not here. The breading was thick but not too thick, and crunchy. The gravy was the perfect texture and flavor. The green beans- some of the best I've ever had- and I LOVE green beans. I get them pretty much everywhere I go. The mashed potatoes were okay, probably wouldn't order them again. Kinda doughy and sweet, not at all what I expected. Overall, this place gives you that southern back home feel. We moved to a different area and now have to locate new restaurants... Fun! My companion and I decided to try this place and it was hopping. We waited the 30 minutes and were promptly called up to be seated. That was spot on. While they have lunch food we weren't really impressed with the sandwiches, burgers and salads. We were mainly here for breakfast anyway. I love biscuits and sausage gravy, it's my go to for breakfast so I had to try it. Honestly I thought the other photos I looked at had pieces of sausage. The description was simply 2 biscuits and gravy. Obviously the description was right so I'm not sure what the lumpy things are. The proportions were definitely off on this one and I found it an overall problem. Either we needed 2 more scoops of gravy or 1 less biscuit. Or butter for the second one. The biscuits were well made and the gravy seasoned well. Just not enough gravy!! My companion got the Grizz. He looked forward to the ham steak. It was tiny for its a la carte price of $5.99. The bacon was unevenly cooked, some too limp. One of our 4 pieces was cooked well. I traded him for his sausage links which were meaty. If sausage are your thing this is the place! Neither of us enjoyed his hash browns. Hash browns are the measuring stone for breakfast places and they failed. Under cooked pieces mixed with a handful of browned pieces doesn't cut it. The eggs were both well cooked, seasoned and spot on. The food was all warm and served promptly. The pancakes though... mine were borderline burned. And all very uneven. If you're selling pancakes in a restaurant setting learn to pour each one in a single pour. And their sizes should be fairly uniform. Ours were neither. You can see the uneven edges on my Volcano plate. My companions were better cooked. He just thought their fluffiness was overkill. I guess that's a matter of taste. Overall we didn't regret coming here and the sizes were generous. But it's pricey for so much of the meal not measuring up. Would think about trying for dinner in future but only after this meal has faded in our memories some. read more

I kept hearing how great this place is, so agreed to meet a friend for lunch. We were seated promptly, but the menu was a sheet of long paper, and the print was so small we couldn't read it. The waitress didn't know what she was doing. She found a large menu that we were able to borrow so that we could order. We decided to get a beer, but every time we asked for one , they didn't have it or were out. Both of us ordered the BLT which came with fries, and we both ordered avocado on the side. When she brought our food out, she said we could share the few slices of avocado on the separate plate?? What the heck? I paid for my own and asked her if they were going to split the cost, since they decided we didn't need our own ! In my opinion, this place is WAY overrated... will not go back. Second , our orders were wrong. My husband ordered Prime rib , medium-rare, and I got the steak and fries. My steak was ordered medium. They got them cooked the opposite of how we ordered them. Upon entering the restaurant, we were given unwelcome vibes... definitely not a warm welcoming. My pancakes were fluffy and delicious. I did notice that they may have been cooked about 10 seconds too long on the bottom side but they weren't burned. I really appreciate the fact that the packaged butter that they offer is whipped and at room temperature. It went on nice and smoothly! My husband's eggs Benedict were cooked perfectly... they had just the right amount of ooze. His potatoes could have been cooked a little longer. We're used to our potatoes having a little more crisp rather than being borderline mushy. The fresh fruit was a nice bonus. My husband's plate was way too big for him to finish. We could have probably split his meal and left feeling satisfied. Overall, the food was very good. There were a few tweaks that would have made the food even better, such as cooking the potatoes a little longer and cooking the pancakes a little less. I'm thankful that Evelyn was our waitress because things started off rocky but she was able to curve our experience in a positive direction. Came in on a Saturday night at about 6:45, we were seated immediately. It was busy. When we ordered drinks we were told we'd have to wait because they were brewing some. We order our food and the fries are warm and my burger was also .it could've been warmer. We asked for a refill of tea and were told we'd have to wait because they were brewing more tea. I don't understand how they run out of tea within less than 30 min...were in South Texas... Anyway the food was warm, they ran out of tea and we had to ask for a kids menu and our utensils. read more

The gross lack of customer service does not make up for the excellent quality of the food. I was overcharged and with three calls to three people saying they are managers and nothing has been done. I will never recommend or return to this location. read more
