First time I've been to this location. The diner on Ackerman is fantastic, so I was looking forward to the same experience at the City Base location. We weren't able to eat inside because we had a chihuahua with us, fair enough. Health code, etc. Can't fault them for that, so we decided just to order online and eat in the parking lot. Disappointing because the atmosphere was very casual dining. Not too loud. Very seemingly laid back. We ordered the turkey club and the Shasta Cheeseburger hold the onions. Twenty minutes later, I went back in to collect my food. On inspection, my cheeseburger had a long curly dyed hair hanging out from under the cheese on the patty. (The burger itself was askew in the box, not sure if that's how it is served or just sloppiness.) Took it back in, they offered no apologies, just said they would have it remade "right away." After standing in the lobby another twenty minutes, they bring out the newly made food. I inspected it this time before taking it back out to the truck, and they had made it with onions. I don't have an hour to wait for a $12 cheeseburger, so I asked to get my money back. They went and found the manager, and she informed me that they would return the money tomorrow because it was an online order. I told her I wasn't leaving until I had a receipt of the refund, and she said she would attempt to refund me now. After waiting another fifteen minutes, she returned with a print out confirmation with the order removed. I now have two pending charges for the meal on my debit card, one for $36 and one for $20. Frustrating to say the least, and although the staff didn't really show and concern they were all very professional. My companion shared her turkey club and French fries with me. The turkey club was alright. French fries were somewhat limp and flavorless. I won't be returning here. The Black Bear Diner on Ackerman is the way to go. read more

We got there around 1pm and were originally quoted an hour wait but were seated in about 10 minutes. There's an extensive menu. It's like a cross between Cracker Barrel and Jim's. I like Black Bear it's good, it's not OMG but it's solid diner food. Thus far everything I've tried I have liked, which it not a lot since I'm a creature of habit. CFS is my go to both dinner and breakfast. Tonight I tried their tri-tip. At first I was a little disappointed in the serving size( yeah i totally want to start bringing a scale to ensure i'm close to that 10oz) but it's not fair since a CFS does cover the entire plate and makes it look huge. Ok the tri-tip was tasty. Though I've never finished my plate with a CFS I did finish my plate in the tri-tip; which I'm sure my doctor would approve of more. Now one thing I'll say about this place is they sure do a great job with their potatoes. Great in fact. I like going mid week for dinner because it looks slow so no waiting; unlike the weekends. It's fair value too with the serving sizes. My wife's only complaint was a tad overcooked on the pesto salmon. When you can see the white fat coming out it means overcooked. read more

The Black Bear Dinner San Antonio is a great place for breakfast, brunch, dinner or dessert. They have a wide selection of items on the menu to choose from. Once of most expansive menus I have seen. The party I was with, everyone really enjoyed there food! We have salad, steak, pancakes, ribs, malts, omelettes and shrimp to name a few items... everything was excellent. Service is not great .... Tried to do an online order and the website wouldn't allow me to. So I called to place the to go order and got put on hold for 20 minutes, so I hung up and called back. Then they told me to come in and place my order and wait. I drive over and give them the print out of my online order. Waited in line and told the hostess the situation who looks over to the other worker and said "you wanna do this to go order I have to cash people out I don't have time right now." So I proceeded to wait another 15 mins for them to acknowledge my to go order. Everyone around me got sat and cashed out. This was an order over $100 for an entire office. One of our staff members recommended this place for our office to add to our monthly rotation. Needless to say we will not be returning. The manager smiled when I told her what was happening. Said zero words other than what was your order. The BLT with extra avocado I ordered was missing after waiting almost an hour. I have worked in the food industry for many years. First time trying this place, I won't be going back. Reason being is cause what I ordered, normal scrambled eggs with cheese was not what I have ever received any where else when I've ordered them. When I asked to clarify I was told yes that is how they make scrambled eggs, folded over just like an omelet is. After reviewing all the different pictures online and on Yelp, the waitress just lied to me about it and there was no reason to correct her since she was so sure of her answer she told me that the folded over egg, that was just like an omelette, is how they are unless you ask for shell or broken, which I've never heard that type of ordering or reasoning either. I mean if you don't know how scrambled eggs are cooked don't cook them, if you don't know what scrambled eggs look like don't lie cause you messed up by not catching it or that it was the cook who is in robot mode and just making the same thing as other orders before have had. I went a few months ago and had a horrible experience. I left a 1 star review, which I no longer see on here. It's been removed. Anyway, after I left the review, I was contacted by a manager at this location. She offered to make things right, and they did. When we went back, they took care of us. It wasn't that busy, so there was no wait. The waiter was very nice and attentive. The food was really good. I can honestly say they made up for the bad experience I had the first 2 times I went. 1st time, we didn't get waited on. No one came to our table. So we left. 2nd time was a little better, but it was still disappointing. we got all you can eat fish. it was not good. Service was not good either. Took an unusual amount of time to get our food. The waiter had no explanation. I recommend giving Black Bear a try. You might have a great experience. You never know. Just don't order the all you can eat fish. It's horrible. Chicken fried steak was good. Breakfast was good. My daughter really liked the Burger. So give them try. If you have an issue, they will make it right. read more

However, it was barely discernible, leaving me wondering if it was even present in the dish. The lack of a bold, cheesy flavor was a letdown. Parmesan sourdough cheeseburger, had no wow factor First and foremost, the meat patty was disappointingly flavorless. It lacked the juiciness and succulence one expects from a good burger. Walked in around 1:45pm sat down. Waitress took our order. We then proceeded to wait 45 minutes for a salad and and omelet. (Mind you it's not packed and not busy). After receiving our food I then had to wait another 10 minutes for the missing toppings on my salad. So we have now waited an hour to be able to eat our food. Not to mention the table in front of us had many issues with the same waitress so we were not the only ones. This review is two stars for the management only. I would rate the food 4 stars. I will pre-curse this review by saying I've worked in the food industry. We waited 30 minutes to be seated and the restaurant was operating at half capacity. That should have been an indicator to go elsewhere. But we stayed. It's a cute diner and had high hopes! Our server Sky was friendly and kind, but inattentive to drink refills and bussing the table. Two of the four guests at our table ordered AYCE fish. We did not receive our meals at the same time and were told when serving the other two meals that they were out of ayce fish and could sub 1 meal of cod or we could choose a different entree. Mind you two of us, had already received and started on our dinners. Another server steps in with 1 plate of cod and tells us we can have ayce cod - not catfish- and sets down the 1 plate of fish in his hand. The 4th guest waited 20 more minutes for his plate of cod to come out. That's one hour, from the time we were seated, that it took all of us to get our food. Everyone at the table was finished eating when the fourth plate finally arrived. I asked several times to speak with the manager, Melissa, and when she came to our table, she explained what had happened: our table's food was walked to another table. Melissa needs to be remediated on proper management. She was calling food on the line (per her story), that mistake was on her. But to take 1 hour for us to receive our food and have so many issues with it, what Melissa needed to do was keep the excuses to herself and make it right with our table. I did give two stars because she comped the fish and offered us dessert. However, when one of the desserts came out, the brownie had been warmed too much and was burnt and hard as a rock- inedible. Horrible, horrible experience. Tables around us had issues too with their food not being delivered or orders incorrect. Maybe our server was in the weeds, maybe they were under staffed, maybe there was only one cook on the line - idk exactly the issue, but it comes back down to management. If your server is incapable, then retrain them or find a different position for them; If she were over-seated, that's a hostess issue; If the line is ordering food to the wrong table, address it; and if the kitchen is backed up, then get on the line and help. Don't explain to me what happened. Clearly all of those things happened at one time to us tonight. I will say the two entrees that came out in a fairly reasonable time were the meatloaf and chicken fried steak. They were delicious. The loaded grits and huckleberry ice cream was also wonderful and I recommend them. If corporate is reading this, please send someone to this location. They need help! I see that your chain is fairly new to Texas (2018) and I know the service is not to the level that you expect. If you get a to go order, be sure to check it before you walk out the door. If you go in to eat, and these issues have not been addressed, expect to be disappointed. read more

Just a very average big eating place. The restaurant is a very large plain-decor restaurant not unlike a large Denny's. They sprinkle a few big bear souvenirs around the place to justify its name. Huge menu with very fair prices and large portions. Good service however it took too long for the food to arrive and it was only Luke warm. I ordered a breakfast and the hashbrowns and eggs were only room temperature which is not even warm. The other entrées were similarly not warm like they were sitting too long before being served. This is a very average restaurant with subpar food. I suppose if you were hungry and it was in the neighborhood with no other places to go, you might give it a try. So disappointed when we tried this location as the one in McAllen was soooo good! We tried dinner and all our mashed potatoes were cold. I ordered the roast turkey plate and sent it back as it tasted BAD. It wasn't even appealing. I ordered something else and it took so long to come out that I had to take it to go.
