Went for lunch today with my mom. First time at this diner and may or may not be the last. The place is cute with all the bears..on everything. Reminds me of the old Coco's that used to be in this location, though - your basic diner. Which is great, if a diner has great food! We asked for a booth and the hostess immediately said, 'no, we don't have any.' Then, 'oh wait, let me go check.' So she disappeared for what seemed longer than necessary to check, especially since they were not THAT busy. Anyway, she came back and said she had a booth and got us drinks. Looking at the menu, it's a little overwhelming as it's huge. They do serve breakfast all day, which is nice. But we both had a hard time deciding on breakfast or lunch. Our waiter, Gerald, was very friendly and just the kind of person you want waiting on you. He gave us some extra time to decide what to order, which we decided on lunch. But we probably should have had breakfast instead.. I ordered the Reuben, my mom the Patty Melt, both with regular fries. They were brought out pretty quickly, looked good - it was a full plate of food. The fries were really good - the perfect 'diner fries'. The sandwiches were decent, but not anything to write home about, really. I mean, my Reuben was full of Thousand Island (I could have used extra napkins, but Gerald had disappeared), but didn't seem to have a lot of sauerkraut. My mom's Patty Melt, she said, was good, but again, nothing to write home about. No one came to check to see how we were doing, if we liked the food, if we needed anything, like more coffee or soda or those extra napkins.. until we were just about done and my empty soda glass prompted Gerald to ask if I had Pepsi or Dr Pepper. I said I was good, didn't need any more but could use a to-go box and my mom would like more coffee. He gladly brought those out, along with the check. He has a great personality, but might need to pay more attention to his customers. All in all, next time - if there is one, because I can think of many other, local places I'd rather go to - I think I'd get breakfast, whether it's breakfast time or not. It's a little pricey for the quality, at least for what we ordered, anyway. read more

We waited 25 minutes for breakfast on Saturday morning but it was worth it! They menu is very large and offers everything from burgers and chicken fried steak to huevos rancheros. I had the spicy sausage (which they make it house) and eggs, it was very good and came with a huge biscuit! My favorite part of the meal was the hash browns! They are thickly cut and really crispy(not like the underdone ones at some other breakfast places) and while restaurant was slammed, you pay up in the front which makes things a little faster! This was our first experience at the diner. We went three weeks ago on a Saturday night. First off they set us in a window seat when the sun was going down. We asked them if they could put the blinds down, but they stated they were broken. They really couldn't have cared less if the sun was in her eyes or not. A different waitress came by and actually cared, so she moved us to another seat. All was good and we were out of the sun. There were five of us in our party, my dad is in a power wheelchair. The next thing I know the managerIs making a huge scene about us being a fire hazard. She was telling this to an employee loud enough so that we would hear. And she was doing this because she wanted us to hear. Then she went and got another employee and toldThat employee something about a fire hazard. By the third employee I finally got up and confronted her and asked her to please shut her mouth. She stated that she needed to tell her employees that where we were sitting was causing a fire hazard. I replied to her that she should do that in the back, and it was very, very unprofessional. And I'm not sure to this day if she was discriminating against my dad who was in a power wheelchair or what?? We were set at this table by an employee. So I don't understand how that could be a fire hazard. Needless to say she never said anything else to us. She had our waitress come over and apologize for her behavior and offered us free pies. Needless to say we did not take the pies and told the waitress that she wasn't the one that needed to apologize. I waited until Wednesday to call the main office in CA. I left a message with a girl name Sarah. She stated that the district manager would be calling me back. The next Wednesday I called Sarah back again at the main office and said that no one has returned my call. She stated she would once again call the district manager tell him what happened and have them call me. So on the third week after no response I decided That it was time to let the public know how this establishment treats people. Obviously Bla diner does not care how it's employees treat their customers. We will never, ever go back! I don't even remember if the food was good or not because I was so upset with the way they treated us. Update: I contacted Black Bear diner, yet again, with no response from them. So they obviously do not care about their customers! So my recommendation would be to not support businesses that don't care about their customers! read more

I came with a party of 7 on a Saturday at 930 am. We got a table within 15 min and were waited on rather quickly. And it was very busy!! A lot of people waiting outside to be seated. Service was great and servers came back every 5 min or so to check on us. Breakfast was great with large portions. I would definitly bring the fam back for breakfast! read more

Wife and I ordered burgers. Food seemed mostly ok. Not impressed with limp cool French fries. Onion rings were hot and outstanding. The soup my wife had tasted great but was thick like pudding. Table service was great except for when we got to the table and paying the bill. No one explained anything including the menus which are different. Food came out fast. The checkout counters are awkward for both patrons and cashiers. We had breakfast here and it was pretty good. Lots of food. Very good quality. What a great meal the wife and I had here. Place was packed when we got there, but the service was quick. At first was kinda skeptical about this place since it's from California and normally portions are tiny from California chains, but needless to say the portions here are huge!! The meal we got came with soup and muffins, which were fresh and great. I ordered the Chicken Parmesan, which was perfectly breaded. Not too bready, not too thin, which is something I like. A great place to go, from the point that we got seated til the time that we paid our bill, the service was great. If you leave this place hungry, then you have no one to blame but yourself. The meatloaf was excellent as were the mashed potatoes that I chose to get with it. The eggs were excellently cooked and the sausage was nice and spicy just like the menu advertises and the home fried potatoes were good too. The biscuit was just as good as always. A big OK. I read another review that said if they could give 5 stars for quantity, Black Bear Diner would get it and we both completely agree this unfortunately doesn't make it the best value. The portions are huge but food itself tasted mediocre. The service was good. I just want to go to a restaurant and not overpay for food I could have done a better job making at home. There were several of us in our party and we all ordered breakfast items. The pancakes were cakey, dense and the best thing ordered. The eggs, toast, were average. The bacon was cooked nicely but bacon, eggs, toast aren't really that hard to cook "adequately". White gravy was ok too. I had chicken fried steak which comes from frozen so it was not special although edible and I liked it for what it was. I had higher hopes for this diner but I will have to keep searching a place to call my regular. Baja Cafe is a contender and I'm up for finding other good food finds this next year. read more

I completely understand they're still pretty new, so I wish I could give it 3.5 stars. It was a 20 minute wait to be seated- no biggie, it's busy! After we were seated it took another 20 minutes for our order to be taken. Their water does not taste good, so order something with flavor. My aunt ordered a 1/2 sandwich and soup, and I ordered the classic burger basket- medium burger. Waited about 35 minutes for the food. The portions are great, my aunt's sandwich looked like something I could have thrown together at home, she said the soup was excellent, and my burger was cooked "well-done" and then some. Our waitress came back once after we were finished and asked if we wanted dessert- she didn't check back to see how things were, or if we needed anything. We decided to split the lava cake- turns out they ran out yesterday, second choice was the campfire cookie sundae. Be careful if you have sensitive teeth because, oh golly, the cookie was as hard as a rock! I think it would have been better if it was warm. Sorry but food was disappointing. My granddaughter ordered the cheese burger that the menu specifically states chopped bacon but it had undercooked bacon strips. Our grandson in law ordered his fries loaded. When they brought it to the table they were plain so he told them and they took the plate back to the kitchen an just threw some grated cheese and over cooked bacon on them. Didn't even try to heat them up so the cheese wasn't even melted. I ordered my mashed potatoes with white gravy and got brown. Wife had the tuna melt and it was very good. read more

Just ordered the fish & chips, everything was so cold. The fries appeared to have been cooked earlier in the day, they were sunken in and dry. I called to let them know, but I got an oh well attitude. Never again! It's hard to support your local restaurants, when they don't care about returning customers with this kind of service. The food was spectacular, delicious, generously-portioned, and cheap. While it has a fair amount of calories, that seems to be the result of quantity rather than actually being high-calorie foods. I had the Homemade Meatloaf meal. It came with decent minestrone and an excellent cornbread muffin, along with great mashed potatoes, and excellent seasonal vegetables (broccoli and carrots). The meatloaf itself was sublime, though I had to eat it later due to the amount of food. Best of all, though, was the service. The waiter was extremely polite, astoundingly competent, and very friendly. She was even willing to accommodate slightly unusual requests, like strawberry lemonade (which wasn't technically on the menu). All in all, highly recommended. read more

Maybe don't go at 9pm...??? Went there Friday night at 9 pm (they close at 10). We were the only customers there. The waiter was vacuuming the dining area when we were seated. He got our drinks then continued to vacuum the dining area right next to us. It was kinda annoying. I understand he had nothing else to do BUT maybe he could have vacuumed the areas not immediately next to where we were sitting. We were getting that lovely "vacuum smell" the whole time. When he got our food order I decided I wanted a soda as well. He put in the food order, and went back to vacuuming. SMH. My BF had to ask him for the soda when he finally finished vacuuming. He was very apologetic and kind. I was just glad he was finally done vacuuming the carpets. Ok about the food now. I had the Cali burger (?? I think that is what it's called. It has pepper jack and advacados). My BF had breakfast (waffle bacon eggs). My burger was cooked how I asked it, but it was kinda bland. The bun was really good. Nice and soft. Good restaurant. Good food and expierence. They don't try and rush you out so you could actually take your time when you're dining, which how it should be everywhere. Has a nice country hometown moutain feel. Makes you feel as if you're at a restaurant on Mount Lemmon. We were greeted upon entering and also greeted upon being seated at our table. Huge portions!! Tasty food and even shareable in size. (See my pict. for details) Very friendly, flexible and co-operative service. The waitress gave us attention, we never had to wonder when our waitress was coming to our table. The whole staff cooperates and looks out for one another. All staff members came up to us just to greet us, and then even when they were walking by, and not just only our waitress either! The whole restaurant works together with one another for their patrons and probably for the sake of the restaurant, co workers and all. I haven't seen this kind of customer service and workability since, sad to say, late '80's and possibly even early '90's. Exceptional service! Everyone knew what they were doing and were knowledgeable about the menu and other operations. Especially for a new restaurant, and being the first restaurant of its name in this town. Well trained employees and happy customers. No one had anything bad to say. Management should be very honored and the owner should be even more honored to have this business running like it is. My friend and I went on Mother's day. Staff was friendly and the wait time was less than 10 minutes. It was busy and the burger I usually get was burnt on the outside while "medium well" was very pink on the inside. It was messy to eat because of the shredded lettuce with 2 small but thick onion rings on top. The fries were perfectly made and so good. Carpet had crumbs and just looked dirty. Been ordering from them online since start of Covid. When its good its good, the problem is that its very hit or miss. Sometimes you get the wrong order or they forget a side. Sometimes the food is not great, biscuits that taste like 3 day old and stale and not ones made that day. Most of the time it is great food but the problem is that its wrong too often. The food is exceptional. The service is decent. The bear theme has a great vibe for either the friendly and welcoming mood for a family with children or people who just love a down home feel. However the two things that are a little trying are the wait times which can get irksome when waiting for twenty plus minutes to eat a chain restaurant that is a step above Denny's and Ihop. March 12, 2022 lunch. We have been going to this Black Bear since it opened. This was the worst meal ever. I usually order the Pot Roast, but this time I thought I would try the Tri Tip---big mistake. I ordered it medium rara and it arrived bloody rare, so I sent it back. It came back a little better. However, it was really tough. But I eat it anyway. The vegetables (broccoli & carrots) were almost raw. I only eat a little. When the server picked up the plate, no questions regarding the barely touched vegetables. This incident will not keep me from returning. I just won't order the Tri Tip again. Fortunately my wife enjoyed her lunch (Pot Roast). First time we came to this restaurant. Inside, it is 1950s atmosphere, with retro juke box, 1955 newspaper which has menu in it. One waitress waited us from the car and open the door, never happened before. But the other waitress left us without any kids menu even though we have 2 with us. Anyway, we ordered our food, and they come not too long, not fast either, acceptable time. Tomato basil soup was really good, my blazin crispy chicken sandwich was really good, and the meatloaf dinner also good. Overall, we are happy with this restaurant, only the service can be improved little bit. We will come back. read more

I didn't know that a new place had moved in to the old Coco's on Broadway. We stopped by and call it luck but we got there before the rush, I got a sourdough burger she got Chicken.
