Having an iced coffee doesn't only make me look ~cool~ and ~busy~, but it gives me a flavorful liquid meal that gets me through the day. It is a staple of my diet, and I've come across quite a number of lattes and flat whites in my life. Black Fox coffee has set the bar. It's easy for an espresso drink mixed with milk to taste less flavorful and dour, but the iced flat white I ordered was full-bodied, balanced, and absolutely delicious! My boyfriend ordered an espresso tonic, which I've found difficult to pull off - the last one I tried was so bitter I almost swore them off for the rest of my lifetime. However, Black Fox had me almost stealing my boyfriend's drink - it had an excellent balance of spunky tanginess and the rich cocoa flavor of espresso. Quite easily some of the best espresso-based drinks I've had in my lifetime. TLDR; I'd brave the 1-hr commute from New Jersey via PATH to enjoy a cup every now and then. read more

I've tried about 5 or 6 coffee shops in this area in hopes of finding the best one and finally I found this place! I will not be going anywhere else for coffee in the area ever again. I've never tried their food but the espresso is always top notch: they have two roasts to choose from. They have some unique drinks on their menu as well. I want to try the cardamom hot chocolate next time I need a treat. The baristas are very skilled, friendly, and knowledgeable. They're always warmly welcoming and happy to help you find what you're looking for or answer any questions. This is also a great spot to buy beans to make coffee at home. Always have loved Black Fox have come for a few years now. Would go at least once a week during "normal" times. This is a coffee lovers dream every detail is there. Not your ordinary cafe. Staff is extremely knowledgeable and the drink menu is very creative yet accessible. Retail bean selection is the best in the city and they now have their own roast. Miss coming down here as I work from home now always a treat when stopping by. Cafe has a lot of character , great design and food . Can't say enough. This is the lovely outdoor (rain protected) location on 56th Street off Madison Avenue. The professional landscaping is tended to and lovely. The drinks I have tried have been excellent, cappucino and latte, both iced. Drinks are picked up from a window. And a clean bathroom next door. OMG! I met up with a friend here recently, and it was the perfect place to hang for an hour or two as it poured outside. The inside is spacious, but all the tables are spread apart. They have a pretty extensive drink menu. I wasn't feeling coffee so I got an iced matcha (no milk). Frankly, I was impressed by the quality of the matcha they used. It was very smooth, hardly any bitterness, and the green color was vibrant. Sometimes when you order iced matcha you get a duller green which probably means they're using a lower quality matcha or it's been hanging out on the shelf too long. read more

It's just ok. There is nothing redeeming about this place. Cold brew is their only defining product but for nothing else justifies their exorbitant prices. The oat milk they have used, consistently chunks at the bottom of the cup. The iced green tea is more like green tea flavored water. If they run out of green tea, they just pour water into your cup, I have seen this. The shop is their best asset, the products, not so much. Found out about this place through our accommodation (Sonder on 20th Broad Street). They advertised it as the best coffee shop in lower Manhattan. That's a tall order in NYC, the city with a specialty coffee shop on every corner. We gave it a shot on our last day there and it was so good that we had coffee there twice in the span of 6 hours. The place has a very nice interior with plenty of seating and great ambiance music. They coffee, pastries and also offer a decent variety of breakfast/brunch food. The butter croissants looked so good that we couldn't resist, so we each got one. For drinks we each got a latte. The way it works is you order, get a number for your table and they bring your coffee / food to you. An exception to the rule is that the pastry was served to us on a plate by the person taking our order. I like this system as I often go for coffee for a conversation and I like not having to pay attention to a name being called out. The croissant was delicious, flaky on the outside, buttery and rich, it paired well with the coffee. The latte had perfect art, very well defined lines on the very even crema canvas. Really good job. The taste was magnificent. They also use high quality milk that added a nice mouthfeel and sweetness to the drink. I loved the fact that they had a large variety of great coffees from roasters all across the US. They even had Ritual coffee, one of the roasters I enjoy in California. This is a great coffee shop that you should try when in Manhattan, I'm sure you will enjoy it! read more

It pains me to write this, but Black Fox appears to have committed to a terrible to-go cup vendor that will prohibit my future visits until a new cup is found. I've visited Black Fox on numerous occasions and have easily spent hundreds of dollars on pastries, drinks, and new bags of coffee to roast at home. With the proliferation of $5+ coffee places (I'm talking black coffee) like Suited, Blue Bottle, Blue Spoon, Joe Coffee, and For Five (not to mention cheaper options like Starbucks and Pret), CHOOSING to go to Black Fox was was always just that; a very conscious choice, as it is the best among its competitors in the neighborhood. The coffee is always brewed wonderfully, the pastries rival Michelin star pastry chefs' work, and the staff is always friendly and informative when I want to learn about coffee. Nonetheless, Black Fox's to-go cup of choice however is a terrible design. It seems almost intentionally designed to leak down your hand (or dress shirt, or suit jacket, or onto your shoes, or your bag) and not only force you to lose out on some of the expensive ($5) coffee you've purchased, but ruin some expensive clothes as well. Presumably, the cup is intended to keep the ($5) coffee you've purchased in it, until you're ready to tip it towards your mouth and consume. However, if any amount of coffee touches the rim of the cup maybe because you're walking* to work or hoping to maybe drink some of it, a stream of coffee will almost constantly run out of the lid (at the point where the lid connects to the seam of the cup) down your hand and onto whatever else may be in the way. Black Fox occasionally attempts to alleviate this problem by placing the seam at the farthest point away from the opening to drink, but the ($5) coffee STILL spills and dribbles down your hand, clothes, bags, shoes. I can pay less than $5 a cup if I'm going to throw the coffee all over myself and it looks like that's what I'll be forced to do for the time being. As you can see from the numerous pictures attached, this isn't a one time thing, nor is it a fluke. I had hoped Black Fox might correct this error over time, applying their careful attention to detail to every component of the experience, but they have not so far. Such leakage happens with EVERY SINGLE cup of drip coffee purchased and it's too annoying (and damaging, honestly) to continue drinking from such cups. I truly hope that I can return to Black Fox one day, as it is without a doubt a favorite. It's sad that their stellar coffee cannot be sold in an equally stellar to-go container. *I should note I have a pretty smooth and balanced walk where my shoulders don't bounce and my arms don't swing, not some plodding waddle where I swing my arms wildly in an effort to shift my girth's inertia forward, like many others I witness. read more

I had a work meeting here recently, and during the work day, there are lots of working/financial folks constantly rotating in and out of the door. If you walk in during just an off time, you unfortunately may not get a seat despite the shop's relatively ample seating. But if you hang around long enough, there should be a place to grab a spot. I had the short mac (which I don't think I've ever tried before), and a tiny lil cup of espresso it was, haha--even w/a 'lil fox on the small plate. It hit the spot, and was good coffee. If you're in the area and need a place to meet someone for a bit, get caffeinated--it's a good spot. Maybe a work meeting. But getting work done, nah. Too much hustle and bustle in this place--at least when I was there on a Monday afternoon. read more

A bit pricey but a far better choice for coffee than what's offered at the Fairfield Inn down the street, and it's a quick walk from the hotel. Staff is lovely. read more

We were staying in the area and came here on a Saturday morning. It was quiet but had 5-6 other patrons. Beautiful space inside and we lingered a bit. I got a cortado with my breakfast sandwich. The cortado was ok, but the breakfast sandwich with turkey, avocado, pesto, and cheese, was excellent. I had really low expectations for food but was super surprised at how good they were. It's really hard to find a coffee shop that puts effort into making a top tier batch brew. The single-origin Colombia espresso was lovely! Notes of licorice, stone fruit, with a candy-like finish. Great tactile, smooth sweetness, with a drying (in a good way) finish. The flat white was also amazing. The espresso paired really well with the milk and highlighted the nutty and chocolatey profile of the espresso. Amazing service with a focus on beverage quality and efficiency. Love their matcha latte with oat milk (yes, they use Oatly). The matcha is always smooth, and it doesn't come out too lukewarm. The lids on their to go cups are also pretty cool, the way they are constructed doesn't let your coffee spill all over the place when a little splashes onto the lid. Their cookies are huge, amazing, and just melt in your mouth. What also melts in your mouth, in a less fun way, are the paper straws they use here. I know they are more environmentally friendly, but someone really needs to invent a paper straw that doesn't immediately become papier-mâché if you take more than 30 seconds to finish your iced coffee. The other disappointing thing I had here was the banana bread. So dry and too sweet. The space, on the 30th floor of the WeWork at 85 Broad, is really spacious and beautiful. I've also never seen it crowded. Wish I worked in this building, because it would be an awesome place for meetings or lunch, but it's frankly too much a hassle to get in (you have to sign in with security on the ground floor) for me to come here every day. read more

This is definitely my favorite coffee shop in ny, and it has become part of my daily routine. The coffee, food, and the service deserves 5 stars, and it had been consistent over the years. Latte - I love their latte with normal or oat milk. For me, it tastes a lot better than a standard starbucks latte - the flavor of the coffee is not overpowered by the amount of milk. It celebrates the richness of espresso and always adds a nice kick to my morning. Matcha latte - this comes with oat milk. Very nice matcha, no fake sweetener Ginger Matcha Fizz - interesting combination of flavor and it works! I am not sure if this is just seasonal but people needs to try it. Almond croissant - i love this for breakfast. Usually croissant is a bit oily for my taste, but the almond filling somehow makes this super tasty but not at all oily. It is not too sweet either. Scrambled Egg Sandwich - just yum Chocolate chip cookies - i love their cookies! it is baked the day of, and its always so soft and gooey in the middle, and crunchy on the outside. I got it a few times when it just came out of the oven, and it is divine. The shop is very cute and has ample seating. Staff are super nice, and you can ask for punch card if you come often. read more

This is my favorite Fidi coffee joint. Lots of delicious drink options like fresh sodas, Date lattes, malted hot chocolates. They always have amazing baked goods, but I think the absolute best thing they have is the almond croissant- I've never had one better, anywhere. Didn't think the food was that great, nor the seasonal coffee. Serves me right for trying a seasonal thing when I usually drink regular coffee. The croissants were not worth it. Especially for $6+. The ham and cheese one costs more and one sad little slice of ham. They were mostly crust, grease and air. Most of it ended up in flakes on my plate. And the ambivalent, "sigh," I work at a "fancy" coffee shop kind of attitude. People, you can keep that sh$t for your next failed audition. I am a NYer and I've put my time in the service industry so I know what it is like. Real New Yorkers are not a$$holes like you are playing at and pretending to be.
