Early evening delivery Worst corned beef hash... ever. Looked and tasted like the stuff that came out of cans decades ago. Itty bitty pieces of corned beef and potatoes all smash together and fried. Ugh. Potatoes-not-O'Brian... hard and cold. Some pieces were actually crackly. Hardly any discernable peppers or onions. I would imagine they were made hours ago and left sitting. Had to toast the English muffin. Scrambled eggs... good! Hubs liked the club sandwich and curly fries, but mentioned it was "nothing to write home about". We did delivery here in August and loved it. So this was a surprise. But I don't think we'll be ordering delivery here again anytime soon. read more

I came here today with my boyfriend and the service was horrible. the waitress Debbie, made a very very bad mannered comment about my boyfriend and proceeded to make such acts to follow up the comment. The comments Debbie made were giving very much body shaming. This made my boyfriend feel very uncomfortable and the experience overall made it horrible. with that being said we will not be returning here. Do no let the old lady Debbie help you. Mixed reviews for today. I ordered the scrambled eggs bacon and hash brown with a blueberry muffin on the side. The eggs and hash brown were solid and cold and were not very great on the taste. The muffin was great but it was a bit too sweet for my taste. However their chorizo omelette was good. The server Jo was great and incredibly nice and had a warm aura. The place itself was your typical dinner. Overall, not too bad but wouldn't stop here if I had other options. read more

When I arrived the gentleman who seated me was quick and friendly. I sat and started looking at the menu and waited for my waiter to come over to introduce himself and offer me coffee or water...this never happened. Another customer was seated by the waiter...which was right in front of me...I hear him ask her did she want coffee etc., he takes her request and walks away. He comes back with her coffee.... At this point I had been sitting for over 10 minutes with no interaction from the waiter. He finally comes over and asked me did I want to order and did I want coffee, I place my order and my food comes pretty quickly. I ate my food which was Cajun eggs Benedict.. It was tasty... the waiter never came back to ask did I need anything, how was the food..nothing. I finish eating my food and I sat for about 15 minutes before the waiter came over to ask did I need more coffee, I say no just the check and a cup of ice.... He pulled the check out of his apron like he was ready for me to leave...At least now I know his name...Carlos you were not a good waiter to me however I watched you be an excellent waiter to the other customers who didn't share my melanin! My wife just celebrated a big birthday, and we wanted to have a get-together in the East Bay with old friends. We chose Buttercup on one experience a few years ago. We remembered the service and staff were great and the food as well. We called to let them know a big group was coming. They prepared the back room in the midst of a busy afternoon. It took us a while to get everyone assembled but they were very cooperative and patient. We were not disappointed with the service and staff (Martin) living up to what I remembered. I had chicken parmigiana. I expected a breaded and fried patty, but got a wonderfully seasoned grilled piece of chicken. The accompanying pasta was also surprisingly tasty. My wife was very happy with her shrimp scampi. Buttercup facilitated a wonderful afternoon. Martin was helpful, knew just how often to pop in, and took a few pictures for us. Buttercup has been favorite place to eat growing up in the area. I have moved away and made sure to stop by to get their wings and pancakes. Well I'm not sure if it's COVID, post-trauma from George Floyd protests, or something else but when you go to your favorite place to eat dinner only to be racially profiled. They're definitely not getting a good review from me. After taking my daughter to the dermatologist, we decided to hit up Buttercup. Upon walking in, they ask to see our vaccination cards. Of course, no big deal. As we are waiting on our food to come to the table, they seat a man at a table diagonal from us for about 9 people. They other people in this party of 9 are entering and no one is even stopping them. They take off their masks, are chatting and not once are the asked for their vaccination card. A man and his daughter arrive, they are brought to the table next to us. Another woman and a kid arrive and go to the same table with no one questioning them. The anger starts to rise as we're trying to eat our dinner. It went from "no problem" to...wait a minute, have over 8 people walked in and them not get asked for proof of vaccination?!?!?! As soon as we were done eating, we left. Why do I think it was racism? Well because we were the only black people in the entire restaurant. The churro waffle was beyond too much and extremely hard in comparison to eating a churro at Disneyland. The children's spaghetti was bland and the noodles were overcooked. My mom said that her spinach and sausage omlete was ok. The wings changes and I'm not sure what they were but we ate them as we were hungry after running around. I will say the food is definitely not what it used to. After more than 20 years of frequenting Buttercup with my family and friends, I would rather take my business where we're welcomed and not profiled. read more

been here dozens of time. The food and service can be great depending who is cooking and who is serving. Both food and service is not consistent. Our last visit my fav Daniel B omelet was burned, ingredients not mixed and even worse had a waiter who did not listen to what we were ordering, and had to flag him several times for coffee refills. In another visit waitress was very rude to our British guest, I guess she did not like accents. Review #244 - 2016 I ended up here with my brother and my nephew after we finished up at the traffic court, right next door, for my nephew. We were seated right away. Our waitress came to take our orders and our food showed up pretty quickly thereafter. I had the corned beef hash and eggs, since their menu advertised it as being the best in the East Bay, and asked if I could substitute my hash browns for fries, which our waitress was very sweet to do for me. I actually liked the corned beef hash, but the fries were so darn good that I couldn't stop eating them and ended up taking my corned beef home to my other nephew, who was very appreciative of it. My brother got their extra omelette, which he said was good. My nephew got the French toast, but commented that he wished that he'd just ordered a big basket of fries since he was stealing mine because he wasn't that hungry & couldn't finish his order. Fresh grilled spinach, grilled tomatoes and avocado on an English muffin topped with poached eggs and hollandaise sauce, served with fresh fruit and potatoes (substituted for sliced tomatoes) The plate was huge! Eggs were poached amazingly, with a runny yolk. Delicious spinach and tomatoes, a little greasy though. English muffin was butted toasted - delicious but little greasy. Loved the side fruit and glad they let me substitute the potatoes for tomatoes for a healthy alternative. Also asked for hollandaise on the side. Overall, solid brunch plate. If I wanted it a bit healthier I would ask for non-buttered english muffin and less oil for spinach. read more

Came here with a friend for breakfast around 10:30am on Sunday. This place was packed! Luckily, my friend arrived about 5 minutes before I did and snagged a table without waiting. We ordered: 1. 2 egg breakfast with sourdough toast, sausage, and fries (instead of hash browns or potatoes) 2. Cinnascuit 3. Biscuit breakfast 4. Apple Pie The frosted cinnascuit was the first thing came out, and I will give Buttercup many props for an amazing biscuit. It was warm, fluffy, but somehow not super, super sweet. We both really enjoyed that. After waiting an awkward 20 minutes, our other breakfast items finally started to come out. That is where everything went downhill. My scrambled eggs were overcooked, to the point of almost being rubbery, and is probably the first time that I haven't finished all my scrambled eggs. The sausage was ok, and the fries were ok. Nothing special. My friend did manage to finish everything that was part of his biscuit breakfast plate, except for the fries. We both ordered fries because the last time he came, he got the potatoes and said that they weren't very good. I contemplated the hash browns, but when I saw them being served at other tables, they looked barely crispy, and I decided to also get fries. He thought that his place was passable. He really liked the biscuit, but everything else was pretty meh. The apple pie was ok. It definitely sounded better on the menu. After eating, I don't understand how this place is so packed on a Sunday morning. The rate at which we got food was extremely slow, and service was really spotty (probably due to not enough servers being on the floor). The food also wasn't that great. My family and I stopped here for dinner knowing the place had recently been renovated. ButtercuP used to be a staple in our household but it had been awhile since we stopped at this location. The main concern we had coming in was that the interior had lost it's cozy atmosphere and the menu had changed. I am happy to report that this ButtercuP still provides amazing service and flavor! I ordered the Sunrise Scramble, which came with fresh tomatoes on top and delicious crispy hash browns underneath. I also requested their blueberry muffin, which they bake on sight and is to die for. The menu is large and comes with all sorts of combinations, so there is definitely something for everyone. The new outdoor patio looks amazing and inside the restaurant still feels cozy and welcoming. I ate every last bite and will definitely return soon. I imagine Buttercup is dependable, reliable quality. It certainly was when I dined here. Good service, fairly large portions and moderately good food quality. Just not super flavorful but certainly satisfying. I had breakfast for dinner. Orange juice was a C for flavor but cold. Omelet had abundant ingredients, although oddly they were mixed more like a scramble than an omelet. Everything was hot. Biscuit was an A. Coffee was a B. But no comparison to the Philz I had this morning. Parking is plentiful in the adjacent lot. Decor is classic dinner. Quiet ambience not overwhelmed by television sports or music. A nice calm environment. Don't expect be blown away with taste and flavors. But you won't have any surprises and will leave full. Recommended. read more

I don't understand reviewers that post many pictures of food that they say they loved here and they leave a three or four star review? If it's picture worthy why only three or four stars? I've so far had breakfast and lunches here. The breakfast is large portions, enough to share! The omelette I had was delicious. A good balance of filling and egg. The muffins and cinnamon rolls are always a favorite of my table. Lunch, I have had sandwiches. I'm always worried a sourdough roll is going to be hard, it's not here! I like the chicken sandwich with grilled to perfection chicken and avocado. A generous serving of avocado on it, not like another place I went I ordered an avocado salad and it had two slivers, but anyways I'm not reviewing that place. The servers here are always nice and attentive. Last time I ate outside on the comfortable patio. My table was the only one occupied out there, yet the server came out often and refilled drinks and checked on us. All in all it's a good place to eat. You won't leave hungry. read more

Meh ! I have been there for breakfast twice and the first time was an "ok" 3-star experience. The omelettes are decent and nothing to complain about but there was nothing to warrant their higher prices either. The eggs were not salted enough so it tasted bland and the stuffings were ordinary too. The first time around I had the hash browns and they were really really greasy. I do know for a fact that hash browns are by definition pretty greasy dishes but this one outdid the others (if you love butter than you might like as it seems to have been cooked in butter, or something buttery). The second time, today, was 'to go' and I specifically asked them to remove the cheddar cheese. And when I got home to eat --- no prizes for guessing but there were all these yucky gooey cheddar cheese inside my omelette. Thanks for killing my breakfast !!! I know there's nothing wrong with Cheddar but honestly I *UGH* cheese in my food (except Pizza) --- not even on my pasta ! Learning experience from today: I expected the "Ore-ida potatoes" to be like home-fries but instead it was more like hash. That didn't help my breakfast much (though it's not their fault) either. It's been 14 years since I was last in this restaurant. Exactly, the time since the last time I had to go to traffic court next door. It shares the parking lot with the Walnut Creek Superior Court. I was a little early so I went in to read the paper and get some Breakfast. Ordered 2 eggs over easy, hash browns, white toast and 2 Italian Sausages and coffee $14. Every thing was OK except for the Sausages, they were like shoe leather hard. Service was excellent. This is a good place to wait for the court to open. Buttercup Grill & Bar in Downtown Walnut Creek is still 5-stars to me. Why? Maybe it's because I'm one of the locals enjoying their Sunday afternoon brunch. Or maybe it's because of: + Friendly waitresses who call you honey + Tasty, down-home food options + Healthy-sized portions (show up hungry) + Delicious pies (10 kinds!) I also appreciate that we can be seated either near the bar area with the tv to watch sports, or in the main dining room. Another plus is that they have a private room available for rent if you have a big group. Also, I can always find parking in the massive private parking lot. 3/29/12: I have to say this first: Warm, fresh bread with the "just-baked" smell radiating off of it comes prior to your meal. I love their bread! Very, very yumms!!! A legal professional group I belong to has our monthly meeting here and I've tried salmon and chicken dinners on their prix fixe menu. It's just over $20 for the dinner and a non-alcoholic drink, but I assume that's our group rate and not sure what regular menu pricing would be. The salmon has been wonderful! Cooked perfectly, with tender and moist pink flakes. Rice and veggies on the side for a very full plate! The boneless, skinless chicken was in a light wine sauce and while the seasoning was just right, the chicken was slightly overcooked and dry. Also, there were either large pieces of skin or fat that I had to cut off. I'll stick with the fish! 6/11/12 food update: the BEST thing I've eaten here yet is the lemon-peppered chicken. Soooo good! It had a crispy outside and was served with perfectly cooked veggies and buttery rice. Almost a little too buttery, but very tasty. You must like lemon and pepper to order this dish. They are both strong flavors that stood out, but not in a bad way. In an excellent way. EXCELLENT dish. Perfectly cooked. No complaints on service. For a room of 30 people, our server (Tanya) consistently keeps the drinks full. She's fast. She walks quickly and takes care of all of us! Impressive! Some servers can't do this with a table of 4. She also doubles as a bartender (outside of their conference room where we meet) and makes a great Bloody Mary ($5.50). Even salts the rim (I LOVE when places do this on the Bloody Mary.) On a Saturday morning Buttercup was pretty packed; however, that did not stop my friend and I from being seated fairly quickly. Our waiter was pretty non-existent while we ate our meal, and even when he did things like fill our glasses of water, or cleared our plates, he did so while looking the other way. He didn't interact with us at all until it was time to pay the bill. I ordered off there seasonal lunch menu and went with the Italian burger. I ordered it "as rare as you can make it", and it came back as well done as you can make it. Other then the temperature being the complete opposite of what I wanted, the burger patty itself didn't taste good, and it was drowning in balsamic vinegar. My dining partner loves this place, so while I'd give it three and a half stars, I can round up. My friend got a coffee and an order of waffles. I wanted to get something that I can't make myself for breakfast, so I ordered the Cinnascuit. It's an interesting combination between a cinnamon roll and a biscuit. Comes out loaded with butter and some berry jam and maple syrup. Both of us got our eggs cooked to order and with a side of bacon. A step up from Denny's. Has its own free parking lot too, a nice feature in downtown WC. (Even the library can't boast free!) Service is standard. read more
