If you go early on a saturday or sunday it is just you and a few seniors. the service is good and the servers are very friendly. I'm a somewhat regular of this Buttercup and really enjoy going there with friends. It has a small town, hometown atmosphere - the wait staff gets to know you pretty well. We usually sit in Debbie's section and she makes sure that we are taken care of. Always knows what everyone wants to drink, my companions usually order the same thing, so she has this down pat - for me, I like a little variety and she takes it all in great stride! Fun personality that really adds to the experience! The food is pretty decent and there is variety with the seasonal menu, the breakfast is the thing to go for. Never had a bad meal or anything that disagreed with me. Well I have to say I wish they never dropped their predecessor, the Buttercup Kitchen. That used to be my favorite breakfast, lunch and dinner spot for years. It had awesome food, service and price. The Buttercup Grill on the other hand has good breakfast food for the most part but it's slightly over-priced for what it is. The fries are a joke and I can't find anything on the lunch and dinner menu that I want. The coffee is only good for cleaning engine parts. I can't complain about the service because it's always been good. There are too many other place in this city to have to have to settle for something I don't really want. I so want to like this place since I know the owners and probably some people that still work here. It ended up being someplace that doesn't serve it's purpose for me anymore. read more

I don't recommend the burgers. I've given them a couple chances, but the juice overwhelms the bun no matter how well done the burger is. I had my car serviced at a nearby Car dealership, and I decided to have a quick breakfast since I was offered a coupon. I normally go the one in Concord, but I have not been to this location in W/C in awhile. I was looking for my usual breakfast of Eggs Benedict, but something caught my eye. I saw that they were offering a $5.99 breakfast that included the following: 2 AAA Eggs cook to your preference and a choice of 2 Bacon or Sausage links and a choice of either the following: 2 Pancakes, Fruit cup, 1/2 Belgium Waffle, Biscuit with Gravy, French Toast, Hash Brown with choice of toast. I decided on 2 Eggs over easy with Bacon. I also opted for the Pancakes. I ordered a coffee while I watched Tennis on the Big screen. They use Tully's coffee and it was very good. (medium bodied) The Waitress filled up my coffee 3x times and was very friendly. The staff seemed very friendly to everyone there since it looked like a lot of the patrons were either locals or regular customers. The breakfast came out quick and it was very perfect as far as portions go. The Eggs were perfectly cooked, and the Bacon was crispy. The Pancakes hit the spot. The bill came out to $8 something without the coupon since they don't take coupons with the special. The special only runs from Mon-Fri 6:00am-11:30am for $5.99. They also offer the same deal after 11:30am Mon-Sun including Holidays for the amount of $6.99. This has to be one of the Best Breakfast deals I seen around for awhile now. Let me begin by saying, "I LOVE ME SOME PANCAKES!!!" I pretty much judge any diner by their pancakes, and Buttercup has some of the best! They are thick, doughy, and really tasty. My friend had the french toast, which was also AWESOME as well. The reason why I couldn't give them a 5, was that the rest of the meal (eggs, bacon/sausage, etc) was really just "A-OK." I stopped in here for brunch after a long night out on the town. We were seated pretty quickly; my only complaint about our booth was that I basically had to disrupt the couple sitting next to us so I could slide into my seat. The tables were that close together. When that couple left, the wife accidentally smacked me in the head with her bag. Ouch. I ordered the chicken apple sausage with scrambled eggs, which came with hash browns and a blueberry muffin. Silly me thought I could finish all of this. So silly of me. The portions were enormous, and I couldn't finish the hash browns, eggs, or muffin. The sausage was delicious, although it was a little on the burnt side. I also got a hot chocolate. Real whipped cream...mmmmm. But no free refills! As Jayme N. and I were finishing our mani/pedi bridal shower shin dig, we were starting to feel the mimosas and immediately pulled out our handy dandy Yelp app. As we arrived we were kindly greeted and immediately sat down. Our server was this super sweet woman who definitely made us out of towners feel super comfortable. Jayme opted for the hot open faced turkey sandwich and I went for the chicken pesto sandwich which came with curly fries. Both of use were totally satisfied with out orders, which didn't take long to get. Even though my chicken was a little on the blackened side, it was still delicious. At brunch time (mid-morning) on weekdays it's usually not super-busy, but you definitely won't be dining alone. Certainly a place to return to. This is probably my favorite breakfast place in the East Bay and also my husband's. I usually get their waffle combo with the cajun sausage. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water. I look forward to Saturday mornings because of this breakfast :) The waffles are light and delicious! I can never seem to get this consistency at home...sigh. We have visited this location multiple times and the server already knows us. I've also tried their omelettes (I forgot which one though) and pancakes. The pastrami sandwich is also great! I haven't been disappointed in their food at all. All of my visits have been very satisfactory. The food is presented very well and they give you a lot for a great price. Sweet cinnamon, plump bread with a crisp side. Blueberry compote was on point, you don't even need syrup. Also shared the vegetable feta omelette with spinach, tomatoes, and artichokes. I wasn't impressed with this place. I went this morning and was disappointed by the customer service. The host did not welcome our breakfast party and the server was not at all attentive. As each of the party members finished a dish, the server took a dish, one at a time, rather than bus the table. The food was also sub par. We all took the recommendations from other reviews and were not impressed. The French Toast was soggy, the bacon greasy, and the scrambled eggs slid on the plate. I finally made it into this little place. What a great diner! At 11am it was filled with regulars, the waitresses knew everyone by name and their orders by heart. I always love that homey feel of diners like this. I was beyond impressed with the "lite" menu. I ordered the bbq chicken which came with brown rice and steamed veggies. It was delicious!! I love having go to places where I can order a quick healthy meal, this place was just added to my arsenal!! The rest of the food looked amazing! All typical diner cuisine. Sandwiches looked loaded with meat, salads were huge, breakfast plates looked plentiful, all customers looked happy!! All great signs! The have an awesome little dessert section with delicious looking pies and cakes. And their signature cinnamon biscuit looked to die for, I'll be back for that when I'm in the mood to spurge and have a few extra calories!! To top of the experience the waitress was beyond great! Their French Dip in particular is one of the best I've had, excepting perhaps the one from Claim Jumper. So far, every other French Dip I've had in Walnut Creek is bland and made with roast beef instead of Prime Rib. It loses a star for poor service. The waitress was rude, impatient and slow. She openly criticized my wife's meal choices and never bothered to mask her frustration, especially when I had the gall to order a latte at the last second. A couple who left the restaurant as we entered openly accused the waitress of being a b**ch before they walked out. If I believed this waitress was representative of the restaurant as a whole, I would downrate it further. For the moment, I'll assume it was the exception rather than the rule. read more

I came here for breakfast on a cloudy Tuesday morning. Don't let the parking lot fool you. I thought it was going to be packed inside but the restaurant was only 1/4 full (it's probably because the superior court shares a parking lot with this restaurant, lol :D) The service here is great. We ordered quickly and our server was very friendly. I would say the only bad thing about the service was that it took HOURS to get our check (and this was because our waiter was talking with other waiters about take home chef or some shiz like that). The food was really good! I got a breakfast special, which included two strips of bacon, eggs, and half a belgian waffle. The waffle tasted buttery and sweet, the bacon was thick yet still fleshy (my favorite!), and the eggs were decent. This was all for 8 dollars? Not super cheap, but it was yummy. I think if I wasn't so full, I would have definitely tried something from their pie menu. It's like a mini Marie Callendars; they offer TONS of DELICIOUS sounding pies. I'll definitely have to come back to try them the next time i'm home :) So overall, this place has good food and good service. But don't let your waiter take 30 minutes to give you the check, biggest waste of time. ever. read more

Thought I would be crowded seeing I was there during the mother's day rush. But they seemed to be moving the food out quick. We waited nearly 10 minutes for a seat, which was on point with there predictions. Our service was great, friendly and accommodating. My only complaint is that my pancakes were not very fresh. It seemed that they cooked a large amount in advance and set them off, so that they would not get behind on the rush. Buttercup is a really interesting place. It serves the old riders of the community, has slightly inventive dishes for a diner, and serves greasy and fancy diner meals. I recently had their Tuna Fish sandwich. Me likey. It's crunchy, on a wheat hamburger bun, and even has avocado. Additionally they bring around mustard and I love to drown my tuna sandwich with mustard. Might be the best tuna fish sandwich up in the Dub Creek. read more

Really cool that they offer chicken and waffles ( I've always wanted to try this combination). Props for being creative, but I would have been just as happy had I not ordered it. The chicken strips had an interesting flavor or spice but they weren't bad. The waffles were however, to die for. Whether it be the butter or the waffles themselves, I'll never know. But those things were delish! Great service, nice staff. Super busy on a weekend morning, but usually plenty of seating outside. We went on a sunday morning and after seeing the humungous line inside, we opted for the outside seating on a beautiful but frigid day and we had it all to ourselves.
