First timers and the service was great! Ryan was amazing. He suggested some of his favorites and the ones we ordered were delicious. They offer indoor and outdoor seating. The weather was nice so we decided to sit outside, where we found a beautiful plant wall. Sadly we were so focused on eating we didn't get any IG worthy pics near the wall. The stir fry noodles were packed wok flavor. I definitely didn't expect it to be as good as they were. Warning: they do use fresh red peppers, but I loved the spice it gave to the dish. The Mac n cheese was yummy. I could be wrong, but the bread crumbs tasted like a garlic bread crumb. It was different, yet tasty. My boyfriend got the salmon BLT and we both weren't expecting that to be as good as it was either lol. Never heard or thought of a salmon BLT until this day and it works! My BF only ate half the sandwich and brought the rest home. The salmon the next day was still juicy and flavorful. Oh, and the house made ranch we got for the fries was sooo good! I work one block from this Cafe Bernardos location, but until several months ago, I consistently passed it by. One day I decided to go inside to see if they had a decent chai latte. The chai latte there is great, but the service I received from an employee named Destiney brightened my day and along with the chai, made me want to continue coming in. I continue to do so for breakfast chai and lunch and the cinnamon rolls there that I'm addicted to. Destiney continues to make every customer feel special and appreciated. Came here for a work lunch and was very impressed with the interior but not so much the quality of the food for the price point. Nestled down R street with a bunch of eateries, this spot is located very conveniently in downtown. It is an order and pay before you're seated type of location. The service was fairly quick but the portion sizes here are definitely smaller than desired, plus a meager side of fries is $4.50. I ordered the Spicy Fennel Sausage which was good but could've used some greens or acidity to break up the flavors as it was really heavy and one noted. I would come back here for convenience but it would definitely not be my first choice of the options in this area. read more

Ok the Quinoa salad thing is SO GOOD! I got the Salad sampler thing and I got the mushroom one and also mixed greens in addition to the quinoa one. Like I said, the Quinoa one was the best one and the mushroom one was my least favorite, it was too lemony. They ran out of lemonade and only told us AFTER we ordered, no big deal, but they offered us a dessert as an apology and we got the carrot cake which literally cured all of my problems like I'm talking each bite was followed with a "this is so f***ing good". First time at this restaurant today. Loved the environment overall and the concept of the place. Service for ordering and receiving my food was excellent. There is good seating indoor and outside. Sadly, the first impression after ordering was how every many tables were left unbussed; dirty dishes on at least 30% of the outdoor tables for a very long time. Saw people coming in often at a loss of where to sit after they ordered. The Turkey burger was good. I appreciated that they honored my request for no onion but added mushroom. Tasty for lunch. As it came with only a pickle, I was glad I ordered a bowl of Tortilla soup. It was quite good with a surprising spice kick in my first spoonful. Overall, it was satisfying except that it was not really hot, sort of warm. As the place was doing brisk business, it wonder if there is not full attention on prepared food such as the soup for continued good temperature. I had a grass fed burger with fries. That burger was phenomenal. Seasoning was balanced, ingredients were really fresh and cooked to perfection. The fries omg were so so good. My coworker and my eyes were lit up after the first bite of both burger and fries and shared the same surprised eyes. The staff were friendly and nice and the ambiance was welcoming. I cannot wait to tell people how good the food was and for next visit. Thanks the kitchen staff and other employees and owner(s) for serving great food and making the visit a pleasant experience. Got the Cesar and kale salad and was very disappointed. A small salad for $12 and there was very little to no Cesar. Wish they would have put the dressing on the side or even add an extra side. I don't recommend getting the salads to go because the portion is so small. $12 is so overpriced I could've gotten 2 family sized salads for $12 at Safeway. read more

This place is kind of a mess. I arrived to the front, where there is a bar area. There was no one to greet me for five minutes. Finally, a bartender showed up and told me the cafe was in the back. When we ordered in the cafe area, we were told we could order from the QR code. It didn't work so we ended up in the line to order anyway. The women's bathroom is creepy. There was dim lighting and the light switch did not work. The food was mediocre at best. We got the Bernardo Benedict and it was nothing to write home about. My caffe latte was served in a bowl. With the lines so long on R St. Cafe Bernardo had open seating. You walk up to the counter, order, pay, and they will serve you. I decided to go with their grass fed burger on a brioche bun and a side of sweet potato fries. My bf decided to order Eggs Benedict served on toast and ham. Results? The worst service! Be warned if you go to this location of Bernardo's. We went in for dinner Sunday night. They got my order wrong 2 twice. After we spent $70 and a 20% tip. I ordered a hamburger with no sauce. It was brought with sauce - no big deal. I sent my order back and it came back as a chicken burger. At that point my husband informed the cashier we did not order a chicken burger and we got up and walked out. I will never go to the R street location again. Solid 4 star review. Outdoor seating/patio + dog friendly?! Check, check! Immediate seating on a Sunday? Check! Before sitting, you go up to the counter, place your order - obtain your order number and grab a seat. My first impression upon walking in was, wow! I loved the ambiance, I loved the decor, I loved how welcoming everything felt. Gal working the register was patient as we reviewed the menu, with it being our first time we wanted to choose wisely. I would have to say from the time we ordered to receiving our food was pretty quick - within 15 minutes! That's what I call service. It was an easy selection for me: Breakfast Burrito add bacon, duh ;) That Verde sauce which they top the burrito in is BOMB! The real star of this breakfast show is the applewood, tasty bacon they serve. MHmMmm-MhmMMmMm! So good! Hubby went for the chilaquiles which was also drenched in that yummy Verde sauce, which was good! Only thing is that it should have had more chorizo, it really lacked that meat protein. My date suggested this spot. We had a rather long wait due to two large parties. The food was really good. I had the beef stew and my date had the steak. Probably my least favorite location in the greater sacramento area. The kimchi fried rice seems like it needs a little more time. I got my regular that i've gotten at least a dozen times, which is the bacon and avo omelet. They cut up the avo and put it inside, making weird moisture -- every other time i've had it them put it on top. The potatoes were pretty soggy and usually they are crispy. Toast was burnt and there's not really an active server checking in so you have to go to the front and ask for it (they forgot a few things). I've been a Café Bernardo regular for 12 years. The food is consistently great. Today, my daughter and I chose it over Paragary's, which doesn't open until 10 AM. When we arrived, I noticed the garden doors were open, and I got seated next to them. I asked the server to move us due to the chilly wind, but she explained it was cold air from inside, and that they had turned off the AC but it takes awhile to get back to normal, which was complete BS and 59 outside. We later asked the manager to close the door and they had only partially closed the door. Despite most tables being empty inside, the server rushed us and handed me the bill before my daughter finished eating. Pure disappointment. I wanted to love this place since I'm a plant mommy and the courtyard is absolutely gorgeous. However, the customer experience can truly make or break the whole collective experience and swayed my opinion. Upon check in there was no greeting at all. I had to ask around for direction on where to sit and for menus. It took a while but finally we were greeted and sat down. The place was busy, we went on a weekend so that was to be expected. I ordered a banana French toast and mimosas. Unfortunately the French toast arrived cold...like it had been sitting out on the counter for a while. I know for a fact it must have been sitting out for a long time because after we placed our order, we waited an hour for food. The only reason our food made it's way to us is because I flagged down our server who disappeared after serving us drinks. After I got his attention and explained that we had been waiting for an hour, he responded with "What do you expect, it's a busy day. It's Mother's Day". That was rude AF and not an explanation as to why we were ignored and forgot about while all the other tables seemed to be getting tended to. My long time friend and I reunited here for brunch one Sunday and were greeted with a long wait time but honestly, the pretty aesthetics and the tasty food made up for the wait time. I have always considered this a favorite. So I was shocked about my latest experience and the lack of the staff to be receptive to critical concerns by customers. We ordered off of the large chalkboard menu, including an item entitled "cornmeal waffle." We were surprised when the item came topped with pecans. In the time of severe nut allergies it surprised me that a restaurant would not have had any kind of labeling of nuts on the menu. When we asked the host she told us that we should've referenced the printed menu. How would we have known that particularly when it is the chalkboard menu that is prominently displayed? When we provided feedback that they really should make a notation on the large menu, we were told they would "take it under advisement". But clearly she had no regard. Why is this important to me? I, like others, have a family member who suffers from severe nut allergies, she wasn't with us this time, but I can imagine the confusion that could have been avoided if she had been, simply by having appropriate notations on a menu. read more

Brunched here for the first time and it was just all sorts of off. I would like to say it's because they were busy but I don't know. The food was not up to par, my friend didn't get his coffee til after he started with his meal already which we had to ask for twice before receiving. Portions are small for the price and quality. Staffs were attentive and so was the manager, but seemed to be long waits for water refill and coffee and my food. They were apologetic about the wait, my turkey burger was last and late to come out, then it wasn't the custom order that I requested. So they too it back and "corrected" it. Got my turkey wrap and had to ask if they can re heat because it appeared undercooked to me. I eat ground Turkey quite often at home so this one didn't sit right with me. But, they were kind enough to make me another one. By the time I got my patty we were about ready to check out. I did enjoy my friends egg she offered and my sweet potato fries, sadly I had to take my patty to go since they took a while to come out. Luckily they generously didn't charge me for my meal. So, I appreciate the managers concern and willingness to make it right but probably won't be returning to this location. My Husband and I really like the Cafe Bernardo at the Pavilions (the food, atmosphere, and staff are awesome), but decided to try the R St restaurant for brunch since it's closer to us. The food was really bad compared to our great experience at the other restaurant. The potatoes were not cooked at all, given some of the cuts were so large it was half a potato lol and had no seasoning. The benedict was so salty and the bread mush because the poached eggs were undercooked and broken when I got them. My husbands food was cold and came with a balled up mess of sad overcooked bacon. We would have sent the food back if the waitress ever came our way, but since we were hungry we eventually began picking at our food as we waited about half an hour for someone to come by. After she was heading our way and hearing her loudly complain about some other table's tipping, we asked for the check to leave. The worst part about the whole experience is when the waitress who we saw once the whole time was finally checking us out, she decided to press the 20% tip button midway through handing me the paypad. It was tactless, embarrassing, and incredibly awkward for me to have to take the paypad from her which she was not about to let go of just to adjust the tip... If she sees this, I just really hope she thinks about whether anything about her service warrants a 20% tip.
