Sun had already set so it was dimly lit inside, we arrived at the counter area assuming that's where you go to be seated but apparently that are correct. Another couple walked in after us, and the hostess asked who was here first to which I replied we were. The other couple however was sat first for some reason, so my girlfriend said something and the hostess apologized and sat us right after. She said something about them being self-service, which I'm not sure what they meant exactly and if you just sit first or if you're supposed to wait to be seated somewhere else. But it's definitely different than the Café Bernardo at the Pavilion and on R Street. Where at both you order at the front counter and then you're seated. At this location it's different apparently which is somewhat confusing. However we didn't let that hiccup ruin our night, and once looked over the menu briefly just to try something new. Our waitress was really nice and friendly, and helped with the girlfriends drink selection after asking for a Gin drink recommendation. My friend and I visited Café Bernardo for a late lunch/early dinner around 3 PM after a nice 5-mile hike on the Consumnes River Trail. This spot was on my friend's bucket list, so we were excited to check it out. Parking & Ambiance: We arrived at a good time and were able to park right in front. Street parking is required, even on Sundays, and costs about $2/hour. The location is on a corner, which might make parking trickier during busier times, but we had no issues. The restaurant wasn't busy--only a few people were dining--so we were seated quickly at a comfortable booth with lumbar pillows, which was a nice touch. Service: The staff was friendly, and we were greeted promptly. I ordered their house-made lemonade and iced water, while my friend ordered the flat iron steak plate. I went with the salad trio (mixed green salad, chopped salad, and mushroom & Jarlsberg salad) and added grilled chicken for protein since gluten-free options were limited. I gave this only two stars and I would normally give Bernardo's about a four. I do like the one in pavilions better. I always like the food at Bernardo's. That's why I hate to give it such a low review and if I could get it, give it 2.5 I would. I took my friend for breakfast there for his birthday. I had the huevos rancheros. It had all the normal elements of huevos rancheros, but there was just no taste to it there wasn't any salsa or even salsa offered on the side. I know salsa's relative but at least a little bit of salsa on the side would've been nice. I had to add the sauce on the table to give it any flavor. The dish was hot and the proportions were large so that was a good thing. I also get the mushroom salad anytime I go to any Bernardo's repair Gary's restaurant. That salad is just the best but this time it was below par we're at par. The mushrooms has always were crisp and fresh. There was not enough cheese, and it just seemed to lack that zing and that zest that I love about the salad. I think that old lemons were used or they let it sit too long. I also ordered the carrot cake for dessert. I sound like a pig, but I'm home a lot and it's better than ordering Doordash! The carrot cake was still yummy as always, but it was just kind of thrown into a box was that pavilions? The slices are even on all sides. I placed nicely in the to go bag. Nothing special here! This is at fort Sutter hotel the old monkey bar! This cafe Bernardo is really the same as the R street one. Except no table service. You order inside up front and your food and drink gets brought to you. First things-- lots of miscommunication going on here. Me and my gf both ordered a mimosa and were. We were told we couldn't get a bottle or a craft. After sitting down outside we saw another table with a craft. Apparently they only do it on the weekend. Even though the person who brought us our food said they didn't offer crafts. Not organized. The food-- meh. Nothing special here. I got the burger and fries. Had some really great interactions with the people also sitting at the bar and I noticed how busy the place was getting. Vibey! Love the atmosphere of this place, it's ambiance, the look and feel. I love that it has bifold doors along the perimeter that open fully, allowing the breeze to flow through the restaurant. My family and I were excited to come out for breakfast on Friday morning. When we arrived we waited in line to be seated. We stood there for a few minutes and once we got to the counter the server mentioned we would order there and the food would be brought to us. We sat outside and had to ask for when our coffees were coming out. When it did, the server carelessly placed it on the table and ended up spilling it. Had to even ask for coffee spoons and silverware which probably made her more annoyed going back and forth, but there just wasn't any attention to detail of the little things - which is unfortunate since it's connected to a hotel. I don't think we should feel like an inconvenience. The only person that seemed to care and make sure we had everything we needed was the manager who brought out our food. Food was nothing special. The best thing in the photo was probably the toast and jam, which says a lot. We're understanding when it comes to fluctuating service, but it was just not it for us here. If you're looking for a place to go just to grab a little something with some coffee this definitely is your place. If you're looking for the full meal experience, this definitely is your place. The salads, the sandwiches, the food selections are all tasty, and like me you'll want to try everything. It's why I keep going back. The french doors are usually opened which makes the restaurant airy and comfortable. Great for family and friends gathering. Once inside, the smell of roasted coffee and sizzling breakfast fare lifts the spirit. Yes, one must order at the counter like a commoner, and yes, the now-standard iPad tip ambush awaits--with its cheery spin of the screen and three guilt-inducing gratuity percentages. Yet somehow, here, it feels less offensive. Perhaps it's the ambiance, perhaps it's the fact that once seated, the service flows with the dignity of a respectable waiter. We are a fan of Cafe Bernardo's and eat there regularly. They cater well to our allergies, and we have yet to have a reaction when eating there. But had an odd occurrence last night. One of our party ordered the chop salad. She doesn't eat meat do she asked to not have the chicken or bacon, and instead include extra avocado, and instead of the house vinegarette to have an oil/vinegar with a slice of lemon. Which they happily did. When we got the bill, it showed everything that was excluded, but they charged an extra .50 for the oil/vinegar (no deductible for the house v, and $2 something for the avocado, no deductible for the removed chicken/bacon. Ok petty, like $3, but seems pretty petty on their part, especially an extra charge for the salad dressing replacement. Asked the waitperson about the extras and got a shrugged shoulder response. C'mon, Bernardo's, we get hit with extra fees all the time, it would still have been a bargain to trade all the protein vs the cost of oil/vinegar and a few slices of avocado. Cheapskates!
