Stopped here for a lunch on a beautiful afternoon on a Saturday. Learned they now offer table service on weekends. It was obvious they were working out the kinks because even though we were seated promptly we had to flag down a server to wait on us. Numerous servers kept walking past us but no one stopped. Apparently no one was assigned to our table. That said the food at Cafe Bernardo whichever location is always reliable and good. I had the yummy noodle salad which is often my go-to. My husband had the Turkey burger and sweet potato string fries. Turkey burger was so juicy and wow the amount of fries you get is huge but so delicious he ate every one. read more

Love this location of Cafe Bernardo's. Outdoor patio is great, very comfortable and in the shade. Service is great and waiters are friendly. I ordered the Kimchi Fried Rice with 2 eggs and it was phenomenal. Nice portion and very tasty and presented beautifully. I also had an Oat Latte which was very yummy, really enjoyed it. The indoor eating area is also very pleasant. For breakfast and brunch there are many pastries to choose from. I love having breakfast or brunch here. It never disappoints. Unfortunately, I did not have a great experience here. I came here for breakfast as a part of the next door hotel's included breakfast package. Tip: it seems as though the restaurant is split into a coffee shop with pastries attached to a sit down brunch restaurant; therefore, it was quite confusing in terms of where I had go or who I had to speak with to be seated. I was eventually seated and it literally felt as though I was forgotten about. I felt not only uncomfortable but I had to wait about 10 minutes before someone came over to ask if I had been helped yet. I only bring this up as a family was seated after me right behind me, got their drinks and orders in way before I was even helped. I would understand if they were understaffed but I was passed by waiters, waitresses, the host, etc, multiple times. I was also quite disappointed with the food. I ordered an Arnold Palmer and Bernard's Benedict which came with a side of potatoes. Portion sizes were very small, lacked standard flavor, and potatoes were borderline still raw. The bread that was used for the benedict isn't the typical soft type that can be cut and eaten with the egg and ham on top. It was just difficult to eat. One of the primary positive things that came out of this experience was how pretty the restaurant was. I loved the floor to ceiling windows that opened up onto the street and it felt like a luxurious experience. I am deciding on giving them 2 stars because, the waitress who ended up helping me was very nice! I also know they have a potential to become a really successful business. (This is the other side of the restaurant for my previous post at Fort Sutter, but I thought I would leave it here for anyone thinking about this place because it has the same menu, same kitchen, as well as the Server Alex too) This could not have been a more perfect date night! Whether you want it to be romantic or social, I highly recommend trying a night here! We didn't book a room, we solely came here for dinner and we were not disappointed at all. Alex was our server, she was sweet and bubbly and very knowledgeable about the items. When I asked about a sandwich she went into detail about how all of their sauces are made in house and the bread is freshly baked... FROM THEIR OWN BAKERY. The food was beyond expectations. There was a huge Macrame separation and the decor and aesthetic was so pleasing to the eye. They had an outdoor patio with a HUGE tv screen and we were able to catch some of the football game. The patio seating is comfortable and they have portable warm heaters. I loved the ambiance. The drinks from the bar were so good! I had the El Nacional and I loved it, it wasn't too strong that I couldn't enjoy it but it was well worth my money. The flavors were so delicious. We started off with the nacho appetizer, oh my gosh. There was so many more flavors than it appeared to have and it tasted so fresh! I ordered the Grass-Fed Habanero Burger (Sierra Nevada habanero jack cheese, bacon, iceberg lettuce, tomato, red onion, mayonnaise). I 86'd the bacon, and it was still the best burger I had in a LONG time. Meat cooked to a perfect Medium (I included pictures). My fiance had the Salmon Burger  (Avocado, tomato, pickled red onion, butter leaf, roasted chile mayonnaise) he was very pleased and I had a bite as well, it was great for a salmon option. Our server Alex also included that if you love Salmon you'll really love the Grilled Salmon B.L.T. too! It was really nice that she always had tips for us to add when ordering, it was really worth our money! We really felt like it was a steal to be honest! Their house made dressing on their mixed greens was probably the best vinegarette I ever had. I am usually a blue cheese person but I was really satisfied with it. Alex knew that it was our first time and she said suggested that we sit outside when we were ready and experience that too, so of course we did. It was so fun! I had another drink out there and the people out there chatting during the game were very social and made our night to be honest. The feel at this restaurant is very easy going and feel-good. It is classy and upbeat all at the same time. If you go I recommend asking for Alex just because she was an amazing server and I could tell everyone loved her. I'm a huge fan of all Bernardo's locations, but this one is special to me - sure, plenty of people probably know this one as a hotel restaurant, but to me it's the closest great spot to eat near the hospital. Like an oasis in the crappy desert life can sometimes be. The first time I visited was in the morning, to grab a meal while waiting for a dear family member to get through major surgery. Knowing it's possible a lot of other people are in there for the same reason adds an interesting air to the place - the challenges of life alongside the joy of a vacation. Major food for thought. And speaking of food, for breakfast I ordered the kimchi fried rice and a cafe au lait, and it was a marvelously soul satisfying meal. So very needed in that moment. The second time was another family surgery, this one fell around lunch time. An odd tradition, but there was no other place I wanted to be. A stressful morning required a comforting lunch, and a gorgeous plate of stir-fry noodles with a whiskey & 7-Up to wash it down took the edge off my anxiety and filled my belly and heart with that feeling of contentment. And it must be said - though I've never had their showstopper meal at this location (and kinda hope the opportunity does NOT present itself), the Thai Noodle Salad is one of the single best dishes in all of Sacramento's restaurants. And so thank you Bernardo for being there - a reminder of normality, a spot of peace and momentary delicious escape. You mean more to me and no doubt many others than you may ever know. I go to take my wallet out to pay the bill and OMG no wallet!! I don't carry a checkbook any more and everything is in that wallet. I told Marisa my dilemma and she asked if I had Apple Pay, I didn't, but I said I had Venmo. She said she would talk to her Manager. I was quite excited when I heard the news of "Cafe Bernardo" opening up in Midtown Sacramento. As many people know, they have a very popular location at 15th & R St's as well as two other locations; one at the Pavilions (off of Fair Oaks Blvd & Howe Ave.) as well as Davis (on D and 3rd St). However, the location that I am reviewing is their newest at 27th & Capitol Ave. which happens to be the location of where Monkey Bar once stood for many years. I must say, this is a beautiful and well-lit building. The restaurant itself is actually joined with the relatively new "Fort Sutter Hotel Sacramento, Tapestry Collection by Hilton". I came here during the early afternoon of Sunday 3/7/2021 at around 12:00pm with a few friends. I actually love the process of how things are run here. You basically order your food first (menu is laid out and easy to read), pay the cashier, you will then be given a number, then seat yourself. It's a way better and less complex method than waiting for a table. I only wish more restaurants would do this. During my visit, Sacramento County was still in the purple-tier with the COVID-19 restrictions which meant no indoor dining. With the layout of how this place was set up, I actually sat "inside" but it was considering "outdoor seating". The restaurant has large clear shuttered doors which helped bring a lot of the outside air inside. The restaurant itself had guests socially distanced with clear partitions to keep any germs from spreading. During our visit, we all felt completely safe as the employees were masked up and following all safety protocols. Since I was starving, I ended up ordering their "Chicken Apple Sausage Scramble" (priced at $11.25). This breakfast entree consisted of seasoned chicken apple sausage, scallions, & smoked mozzarella cheese mixed in the form of an omelet; it was served with herbed potatoes, toast and sides of ketchup & raspberry jam. I also ordered a medium size of their freshly squeezed orange juice. Now this place was be a five-star rating had it not been for my friend waiting.. and waiting.. and waiting some more. In fact from the time we arrived (which was around 12:05pm), I got my food quickly (around 12:25pm) but she did not receive her food until around 12:55pm. In fact, I am someone who never eats before the rest of my party receives their food but my friend told me to eat before my food got cold. As far as my plate, everything was presented nicely and was quite filling. I got a decent amount of food for the price I paid. The egg/sausage mixture was hot while the potatoes were seasoned to perfection. I also loved the toast & side of raspberry jam. Overall, it was an above average breakfast as I made the right choice. My other two friends also got their meals the same time as mine. However, my friend who had to wait forever was being very patient. The server also apologized several times since it took so long. I also have to admit, this place was BUSY and I could almost see the employees being very flustered with the amount of customers that had to be taken care of. It has been very challenging in the restaurant industry especially staffing a balanced amount of employees during the pandemic. I just know that "Cafe Bernardo" did a very decent job from my most recent visit. When I factor in the ambiance, food, prices, and location, it scores tops in my book. Service though does need work though. Therefore, I will have to give them a 4-star rating. read more

I came to this location of Café Bernardo, when I arrive downtown for a doctors appointment a little too early. Parking can be a bit of a hassle since it is in a heavily trafficked and popular area. Luckily, I managed to find a street spot around the corner. The location itself is very clean and modern and the staff was very kind and friendly. The menu is identical to their other location and I happened to be there at breakfast time. I opted for their soft scramble, which was a delicious portion of scrambled eggs with cheese, served with potatoes and some of their rustic bread. I also ordered a chai latte with oat milk. All in all, it was a nice dining experience, and the food arrived quickly. read more

I love the vegan grain bowl. It has a great combination of flavors and veggies. With the tofu, it is filling while not making you feel heavy. The only thing that makes it lacking for me and stops me from continuously getting it is the preparation and cost of the tofu. It sucks that they charge you $6.50 for half a block of tofu (when a whole block is $3 at the store) and then they don't even season it. Other than being fried, it's plains Please add some flavor/seasoning to it like you do to the chicken, you don't even have to fry it if that will save you some change! With some flavorful tofu on top of this yummy bowl, vegans will be considering Cafe Bernardo anytime they have to take their meat eating friends out! read more

I ordered a cheeseburger but the server brought me a hamburger. I didn't realize it until I took a bite into a dry tasteless burger. I told the server and he offered to bring me free piece of cheese or refire the burger. I had tickets to a play and he couldn't refire it time (25 minutes) for me to get to the play. His only "comp" was the free slice of cheese. I ordered my bun toasted. It wasn't. Restaurants make mistakes. I get it. My issues are the length of time to remake the burger correctly and the lack of making it right by at least charging me less for the burger, say 50%. The food itself was not very good. I wouldn't go out of my way to get the coffee, but I did like how it was pretty late when I came in and I was still able to get coffee (or drinks!) at a late hour. This was my first visit to the Capitol Ave location and I will say I loved the layout and feel of this restaurant. On this occasion we ordered upfront and sat outside in the comfy booths. I ordered the salmon salad and a fabulous cocktail named the Bee's Knees. The salmon salad was delicious with fresh avocado, endive, golden beets and roasted almonds. The salmon was grilled perfectly and so tasty. The cocktail was made with gin, lemon and honey and it was quite refreshing and perfect with my salad. My friend also ordered the sweet potato fries for us to share. I have never been a sweet potato fry fan, I'm a die hard russet potato girl through and through but I will admit these fries were fantastic. They were crisp, soft inside and cooked absolutely perfect. I also ordered a Cubano sandwich to go for my husband and oh my! It was freaking amazing! Friday night at CB, before a show at The Sofia. A member of our group asked the server for mocktail options as there were none on the menu. Reminder, this CB has the full Four Palms bar. The server asked for flavor preference and mentioned botanicals. My friend requested something fruity. When the drink was brought to the table, it was gradient in color, in a tall glass, with a cherry. She said it's cranberry, pineapple, and a third fruit. Believe me when I tell you this mocktail was literally three juices poured into a glass for which they charged $9!!! What an absolute joke. Conveniently located in front of Sutter medical buildings, this place has a great look and feel. The ambiance was chill. The service? Eh, the waiter kept checking his text messages as I was asking him questions about the menu- I constantly had to repeat myself. The other two waiters we spoke with looked like dear in headlights when I asked about our coffee and also requested hot sauce - I'm sure they're busy as hell, and I get it. The coffee took almost 15 minutes to come out. Then the food came out 5 minutes later, so 20 minutes total wait time for our food. We ordered French toast and eggs Benedict. Both were cold when they were brought out to our table; I'm assuming they have been ready for a while and just sat there catching the cool breeze from the outdoor patio door that is left ajar. I stayed at the Fort Sutter a couple months ago and visited the Four Palms bar, which looks to be part of Cafe Bernardo, the hotel's lobby restaurant. I went with a small group at around 9:00 on a Friday night, some of us drinking and some of us getting food. It was a nice place for both. We took over an attractive patio space in back, with plentiful seating around a fire pit. The atmosphere was comfortable and fun, and service was attentive. I drank something sweet and non-alcoholic, I think a lemonade, and had a banh mi for dinner. It was surprisingly good, a hearty, spicy sandwich of Vietnamese marinated pork, sriracha mayo, pickled vegetables, and cilantro on baguette. My husband also visited Four Palms during our stay, to get cocktails to take up to our room. The bar didn't feel fully integrated into the hotel (no room charges, for instance), but he was able to do this without getting in trouble. We were also directed to Cafe Bernardo when we asked the front desk for utensils. In any case, it's a great place to eat or drink whether or not you're staying at the Fort Sutter. I'd recommend it if you're looking for a hip, relaxing spot in this part of Sacramento. read more
