This place was on my list to visit while in town and I'm so glad I made it by. I got in right as they opened so it was a few minutes to wait on the croissants which was fine because the smells coming out of that kitchen were heavenly. I ordered a coffee, a regular croissant and a pain au chocolat. A croissant fresh out of the oven is something everyone needs to experience lol. This was the best croissant I've ever had in my life. Soooo buttery and flaky. The pain au chocolate was equally as good and now I will be on a hunt in my area to find something that can even come close to Cafe De L'Opera. The flaky crispy outside with soft doughy layers is heavenly. Come early because they are gone quick! The rectangle lemon stuffed croissants are good, but not as tasty as the chocolate almond ones. The scrumptious veggie panini sandwiches are delicious! The soft ciabatta bread is loaded with veggies and a thick coating of avocado and pesto sauce. Best part? A FREE Macaroon after Yelp Check-In! I stumbled across this cute cafe when all of the cafes around closed their kitchen at 1 PM. Confused about how early places closed their kitchen, I asked the owner about their menu and to my rescue, they had food available! They had actually stopped serving breakfast at 1 but since it was right after 1, the nice man offered to make the omelet himself for me, as long as I didn't mind waiting a few extra minutes. I picked my own options for the omelet and I really liked how it was made - the cheese was perfectly melted and the eggs were pretty fluffy too. I asked for a bit of the ghost pepper cheese and the amount that he put in it was just enough heat. The food quality and service we received from Cafe De L'Opera this Christmas was something to share. I called to see if they might be able to make a gluten free and dairy free quiche for my daughter. The owner Alina said she would be happy to try and let me know if she liked the way it turned out. This was just a few days before Christmas as well. Her response to my inquiry showed that she cares a great deal about her customers needs. Fast forward, we enjoyed 2 of the most delicious quiches we have ever had. One was the special one she made just for us and the other was the standard quiche loraine. Both were absolutely delicious. The almond and blueberry cream cheese croissants were wonderful and Alina made a special gluten dairy free banana bread that was so yummy. What a treat! read more

They change up their pastries but when they have the guava cheese turnover I always take one to go and toast it for breakfast the next morning...mm. This hole in the wall unassuming cafe has the best croissant in downtown San Diego! They bake their croissants in small batches, so they're always warm, fresh, crispy, flaky, buttery and delicious! I have had the chocolate, almond, chocolate with almond, blueberry and cream cheese, and they're delicious! I have also had the creme brûlée toast (which they don't seem to serve anymore), and it's also amazing: pudding-like, custardy. I think this is how the French eat their French toasts. I have also had the breakfast sandwich: egg, cheddar and avocado on ciabatta, and it's very good too. Today, I just tried their cinnamon bun, and it's really delicious! It's made with croissant dough, so it's light and flaky. And it's very cinnamony. Their coffee is 100% organic and very good. Smooth. Not bitter at all. It's owned by this very nice couple. I always order the ham croissant, but I always add a note to substitute bacon instead of ham and no tomato. Sorry for being a pain, Café De L'Opera, but your breakfast croissant sandwiches with bacon is simply heavenly. The Dijon mustard that you put in there is a nice touch to combine all the right flavors in a very satisfying breakfast. I work a block away from here, so whenever I order, I place it before I start my commute, park around the corner in the green 15-minute parking and when I walk up, my order is always ready for me.
