So good! Walking distance from our hotel! Good delicious! Great service! Packed when we arrived (says a lot), but luckily there were seats at the bar! For years I have gone to Cafe Mason at least once a year in hopes it will be better. There's a reason why this place is often empty. Let me set the stage. Four guests in entire restaurant at 12:45pm, Sunday. Seven staff. Drink orders arrived after 10 minutes. My latte was barely luke-warm. My lunch partner got his food, then 10 minutes later after asking my Mushroom/eggs Benedict arrived. Why the long wait w more staff than patrons?Nothing was prepared as ordered. Over medium eggs were served as over hard. My poached eggs Benedict were in fact hard boiled eggs. Couldn't even find someone soon enough to get our check. Food was meh. Pretty typical city diner, updated decor featuring framed French sidewalk cafe watercolors on the walls. Got pulp? Order the fresh squeezed OJ. First time for everything as we actually used a spoon to eat the glass of juice. I had the homemade corned beef hash and eggs and my girlfriend had huevos rancheros. Both were decent, beyond pedestrian but not exceptional. Food came fast so choose this place for a quick breakfast to fill the tank for a day in the city. read more

Delicious food, excellent wait staff, really nice ambience. We were waiting for a table outside of Pinecrest Diner in the cold and decided, instead, to walk down the street to Cafe Mason. The first time I came here the eggs were not cooked and I was treated badly for bringing it up. I came with a friend the next time and since he knew the owners, we were treated well. The next time I came, they refused to take my gift card , even though it was a visa. I told them they should place this so called "policy" in writing for the customer to see & the owner had an attitude with me. This place seems very picky about who they choose to actually give good service to as as an Afro Latina disabled woman , I don't feel comfortable with how I've been treated here. I will be going to Mel's or just cooking at home because I'm not paying $20 for some eggs and hash browns to be treated like a less than. read more

Food was really great but the service really sucked. My server barely acknowledged I was there and never came by to check on me. After I was done. I had to wait 15 minutes and ask someone for my check. It was delivered by a busboy and he ran my card. My server didn't do anything and trying to complain to management was worthless. Will not be going there again. read more

The food was bad, would even go as far as to say it was good. Here' my problem. I was charged twice for my meal. They will not respond to the multiple private messages I sent, as I really wanted to keep things quite and felt surely they would make things right. Crickets.. They have no way of contacting them and this is the only way to get there attention. I would never recommend Cafe Mason to any one and well continue to share this story to everyone I know going to San Francisco. read more

This was a find! It feels it sells as a " contemporary American Diner and it lived up to its name. Lots of selections a moderate but sufficient wine list I opted for the spinach crêpe $18 served in a shallow bowl really was there were terrific with a side of fresh fruit. My guest had BLTs and we all had Chardonnay. I was very impressed with our server, Roberto, who insisted upon calling us "my ladies"! We were on our way to the Golden Gate theater. This is just a fluke few blocks up the street on Mason. Sadly, no Wi-Fi. However, they looks like they have all the apparatus to create a milkshake like we all remember. I recommend! read more

No doubt Cafe Mason benefits from the long line in front of the breakfast place across the street. That said, I would return to Cafe Mason in the future. The place has a wonderful, relaxing feel to it. Nostalgic, even. My order was the Denver Omelet ($14.95), which was served with some excellent hash browns, toast and butter. The coffee ($2.95) was very good, not bitter and yet nice and eye-opening. Service by Gigi was really good, and she was really busy. The others in our party of four were equally satisfied with their meals and the coffee. Yes, the pricing is very San Francisco, but that's what I saw when I looked out the picture windows. The place was pretty crowded but luckily there was no wait at 11:00am on a Saturday, there was one empty table left that was ours - score!! I've been searching for a place that can do a good seafood crepe. In south san francisco there was a restaurant called Dominic's at oyster point that made some delicious seafood crepes. Unfortunately the whole area is closed and now under reconstruction because they decided to build office towers, hotels, etc. My family and I decided to have brunch at Mason Cafe because we were going to watch Soft Power at Curan theater nearby. We all tried the seafood crepes for $16.95 each, not a terrible price for SF but not a ton of food either. I don't eat much so it was fine for me. Two small crepes filled with a mix of seafood filling topped with cheese and baked. Comes with a variety of fruit which I enjoyed. The crepe was fine and it came out piping hot, but I felt the cheese was overpowering the delicate seafood. read more

Nice spot for breakfast, plenty of seating so didn't have to wait long, nicely decorated, service was better than average, everyone was very friendly and helpful. Pancakes were light and fluffy and the sausage was tasty and cooked perfectly. Hot Chocolate had an impressive presentation but was overly intense/sweet for my preference. We had a great experience here today. Walked down from the Grand Beacon hotel. Maybe a block or two. Seated right away. Very nice waiter. Breakfast came out pretty quick. Nice portions. Well made. Really loved my pancakes. Not sure if it was the pancakes themselves or the syrup. Very good. Cleaned my plate and waddled out. I would definitely go back when in the neighborhood. read more

When our waiter, Alex Perez came up to our table I jokingly asked "Do you serve Alligator meat?" He never missed a beat and we became instant friends. When we asked for boxes at the end of our meal, he was quick to deliver along with some extra coffee. The food was good but the hostess Abigail cost then 2 stars for her intentional bitchy attitude towards me. Yes I came in and asked if I could just sit at the bar as there was a waiting crowd...but her reprimanding me that I "can't just come in and sit anywhere" was sufficient. So I gave my name, party of 1 and waited. She skipped over me by 5 parties before I came in to ask why I was being skipped. Her reply.." you left" . No I didn't, then she pretended to not see my name on the list, turned it over and was going to put me at the bottom!!? I said no, turned it back over and said " here's my name, the one not crossed out with5 after it crossed out. Then she gave an excuse that it's hard to seat one!! She did all this with smug attitude and a very bitchy tone. She needs better people skills. read more

I liked the vibe inside. But the coffee was really watery - and the hashbrowns oddly enough are only crispy on one side... Eggs over easy were not hot by the time they arrived at our table. Sausage was meh...salty but they were nicely browned. DH got the California omelet - a bit overcooked. Service was fine - nothing special - would not make a special trip to eat here. The staff are so welcoming at first but by the time we had to pay they were very pushy and rude and the atmosphere at the start was fun but by the end it was very pushy! But there is a lot of seating options. We came here for breakfast and the menu wow! It is so big and there is so many options for kids or picky eaters. the food was good but I got the eggs Benedict and the hollandaise source was vinegary and the meet looked a little non-fresh. But the meal was a good one and did the job because I'm not hungry any more. read more

Review is for a big breakfast. I'd figure I need a big energy boost for attending a technical conference over at the Hilton Union Square. After all, it was my turn to moderate one of the morning sessions! Cafe Mason is a large, spacious 24/7 diner that's located between the old-school Pinecrest Diner (my second choice) and the Hilton, which will also serve breakfast at roughy 2x the price of anywhere else. Cafe Mason looks a bit more artsy with its neon lights and retro themed decor on the inside. I ordered the Silver Dollar Special - a breakfast so huge it comes in two separate plates. The savory plate had breakfast potatoes, four decent sausages, and two scrambled eggs. Everything was seasoned well. I wished they offered some ketchup for the eggs. The second plate was 8 mini pecan pancakes with a side of fresh banana and maple syrup. These were pretty good - soft, fluffy, and small enough to enjoy. All this for just under $16. Second time here with my mom we were suppose to leave on a wine tour both times due to problems we didn't go so we stopped in at this diner across the street. First time I got a veggie frittata which was amazing hash browns were w little on the dark side. Mom got the French toast also amazing we got full. This time I got the Veronica with spinach added and my mom got the chicken frittata. Both made really well chicken breast wasn't dry. Hash browns on the dark side again. This time we also tried their billion dollar bacon. Don't get me wrong the bacon is flavored really well but my mother and I prefer bacon on the crispy side. Wouldn't order again but it was tasty. Service was good both times super busy we got in right before the rush but the waiter the first time checked on us consistently and the waitress the current time did the same. Solid establishment if we are ever here in the morning again would definitely stop by. read more

Happened upon this place after waiting in line at Sears Fine Dining a few blocks away and we were very glad we did! Wifey went in while I parked in the garage directly across the street which was so convenient. Public parking starts on the fourth level and the ramps are TIGHT but I made it ok. If you're in a bigger SUV ‍ The food is mostly traditional American diner fare but they have an assortment of crepes and lo and behold, the Croque Madame! Obviously this is a French dish but what's more American than what's basically a grilled ham and cheese on French toast with two fried eggs on top? Holy cow I was was in heaven. So good! Wifey had regular French toast which she said was good. My meal came with an impressive fruit bowl. Fresh strawberries, red apple slices, pineapple, bananas and some melon chunks. The service was OUTSTANDING. They were a little busy so it took a few minutes to get our order in but wasn't too too long. The waiter was cheery and came by a few times to refill our coffee and see how we were liking things. Overall 10/10 highly recommend. This gem is one of our new SF favorites. It ain't fancy like Sears but the food is just as good and a lot less of a wait. read more

Orange juice tasted fresh with lots of pulp. Clean and attractive but very noisy and hard to have a conversation. Service was rushed. We will not be back. read more

It's smack in the middle of a bevy of hotels, right on Mason a block or so from Union Square and the Powell Street cable car line. I think the place formerly was more of a diner, but regardless if it's a diner it's a nice one. All booths with a counter in the back. Very nicely appointed. We went on a Sunday morning and the place was full, but we managed to snag a booth without waiting. Attentive server, right on the spot. These aren't college kids but professional waiters, and it showed with their service. Menu is full of breakfast items including several benedicts. Ordering was quick as was the food. We had traditional breakfasts and they were fabulous. As we sat there looking out the window at the long line at the Pinecrest Diner across the street we chuckled and considered ourselves lucky to be eating here. It's the better of the two. You won't be disappointed. read more

You're not getting skimped, but you're also not biting into a mouthful of a packet of deli meat. They definitely know what they are doing. Service is good and ambiance is a small humble shop on the corner of 12th Ave.

The one casualty of DoorDash was sogginess by the time it arrived. That's not a knock on the sandwich, it's just the reality of ordering something like this for delivery. At $14.50 it's a hearty sandwich at a fair price. I'd recommend it, but eat in.

He raised his voice for all the diners to hear about my allergies, told me I couldn't get any pizza, and when I pointed out that there were options, he told me "I'll triple check if this is possible for you." When he came back and confirmed it was possible, he tells me they can do a gluten free pizza with vegan cheese and vegan pepperoni. It felt like the moment he heard 'gluten' and 'dairy,' he mentally categorized me as 'vegan' and stopped looking for ways to make the experience enjoyable. Yikes! Lol I fully recognize - girl, why did you go to a pizza spot with a gluten and dairy allergy? Yes I am not okay for this hahah but also I felt pretty embarrassed and treated really poorly. This experience doesn't reflect Tony's as a whole, but it was just a terrible interaction and that waiter made it real clear that he has no patience for anything that is inconvenient during his work shift.

wow, never have i ever had a worse experience in a diner in my entire 24 years of life. the menu was great, a lot of variety and i cant complain about the food because i never got a chance to try mine. i was visiting san fran for my friend's bday and she lives out of the city so neither of us really knew the area. me, and four of our friends decided to go here because we were a little drunky and it was the end of the night so of course we wanted some food. two girls in the booth behind us were glaring at my sister so she asked them what was wrong and immediately these girls started screaming in our faces and disrupting the entire restaurant. we told them it's all good, lets just drop it, but they continued to call us names and disrespect every person at our table. they must have been on some sort of drugs because they were screaming a mile a minute and then proceeded to walk up to our table, throw a glass of water on my friend (hitting the booth behind us as well) while the entire restaurant was booing at them. they were threatening us telling us they will "kick our @$$es" and saying "i will kill you b*tch". an older man got up out of his seat and asked the girls to drop it and sit down which then prompted one of the girls to grab her thermus of hot tea and threaten to throw it on him. at this point we were about to call the cops, but instead we asked the server to speak with a manager but she said "we dont have a manager on duty during the late night shift" and i asked if they could at least be asked to leave since they are ruining everyone's experience they said "we cant kick thme out they are regulars". so we asked for our food to be boxed up and we left, at that point our appetite for drunk food was gone so we gave all of our boxed food to some homeless men. i dont think we should have paid for anything in that restaurant and they really need to get either a security guard on duty during the early am hours or they need to hire some staff with common sense. BY FAR the worst customer service in the universe!!!!! we asked our hotel security lguy later about that cafe and he said a lot of the time they find crack pipes and heroin needles in the bathroom. next time you and your friends have the drunk munchies just stick to good ol' Dennys!! read more

this place isn't a "fast food joint" or an diner but more an european look and feel now- no longer has the european/american diner clash scenery look. "oh and not forget the prices and service" the New Look- they rearrange the previous owned paintings, add ceiling drop deco, recolor the walls, add the scounces and redid the columns, redid the booth, add new chandliers and track lights (by getting rid of the water fountain ceiling features, white huge wooden box lights that were over every single booth, the red velvet booth w. chrome finishes to wooden booth, and the chrome countertops with granite countertops, got rid of the fake palm trees, the fixed jukebox and that was replaced by an extra table... any of the 50's look) all but the neon lights at the booth its still there but in a way disguise also "now" the espresso machine seems to pop out more with the yellow and red wall interiors as well with the sign above it is more noticeable than before. "parking for italians only" the owner told me personally that- -the parking sign is for the espresso machine and the pasta dishes and that he wanted to focus more on the European interiors like the paintings and the dishes that they serve here and less of an 50's diner feel look- so it was time for an interior upgrade cafe Mason management- it would be also nice to have an host, cashier, food helper to the table, or even an drink refill person/baritas for the fancy coffee especially for "rush hour" p.s. the outside awning was a design from dinnerware thats now in their basement/ storage room read more

Myself and a party of 5 went to Mason's California Cuisine on the first day of the new year 2012, I was excited about going to this restaurant the menu was interesting & the prices were good ,I went to use the restroom there was a female and male sign on the door of restroom ,myself & a man from the kitchen were both waiting he was looking at me so I said hello & wished him a happy new year in english and my broken spanish ,when the other kitchen worker came out he told him I was an ombre this means man in spanish ,I was still waiting for the restroom when he finished using the mens restroom he told me to go use it, I went & told the hostess she was confused then I told another waitress she was also confused ,I had asked for the manger both times neither of the women got him then while I was asking for the names of the owner and worker a man approached and asked what the problem was he said he was the manger at this time, I just wanted to know the name of the kitchen worker who was out of site and the name of the owner ,I called the next day the owner said there was no one that worked there with the name they gave me, I'm a tall woman with a deep voice but it would matter I discriminated against and talked about by the kitchen help ,I was a paying costumer, I was disrespected and nothing was done and in all places San Francisco in 2012 read more

The late night waitress here is just awful. I really think the management should step in and either retrain her or reevaluate her usefulness to the restaurant. The first and last time I will ever dine at this restaurant, the waitress forgot to input one of our meals and all of our appetizers. My friend ordered a mushroom burger with extra mushrooms and no tomatoes. Instead she received some other burger with absolutely no mushrooms. We asked her for ketchup and the waitress brought us everything but (three things of hot sauce and mustard). It just seem like she did not care at all. We confronted her after the ketchup, as that was the last straw of carelessness. She did not apologize at all. She got defensive and asked us what our problem was and what she expected her to do. We simply asked her to do her job, take an order and deliver what we ordered. We all work in retail we understand how shitty some customers can be, but we were nothing but nice and patient up to a point. We all make mistakes, but this waitress got everything wrong. they have Korean cocktail beverages. made with Soju. not Japanese sake. it may be close to Japanese sake but the Russians dining staff loves it even though its not made with vodka. Vodka is 40 % volume while Soju is 25%-30% volume which is under the Beer & Wine license. any hard liquor that over 35% needs the liquor license. hence there's an beverage listed as GangNam Cafe under that category to represent one of the Korean towns/province area in Seoul. And why they carry Korean SoJu Cocktails. they don't have Bloody Mary's but Passion Mary since its made with again Korean SoJu and not VodKa. they started carrying Korean Cocktails since 2006. when one of the owner's kids decided to work full-time. Korean Cocktails in LA and New York has become popular in 2008. This place is owned by an Korean family. Hence, the Korean Soju cocktails list. i used to love this place until september my finance worked here and in jun she requested vacation for august in august . the manager " Daniele " said sure go a ahead, so we went when we came back she asked for her shifts back and never got them after three weeks of waiting they told her there were no shifts available and she was let go. after two weeks she applied for unemployment after waiting for one month with no avail we asked the manager what happened he replied you were fired for no reason, after talking to her while the conversation was being recorded by her iPhone he explained that the management want going to pay more taxes for her unemployment and she should go get a job. Had a wonderful experience at Cafe Mansion! The food was absolutely amazing, and the service was exceptional from start to finish. The staff was very friendly, attentive, and always checking in to make sure we had everything we needed. They truly made us feel welcome and valued as guests. I give one star for being open late and the food can sometimes be decent. The service sucks. If you're drunk and want to look at the cute Russian eye candy then great. I have seen people walk out after being seated and have had no one take their order. During Sunday brunch hours it's not uncommon for the manager to come over and take your plates away or fill your glass. If you want to go for some good hassle free food you might as well just go up to Loris, at least it's consistent and they give you your refill instead of ignoring you after dropping off your food. We went there early on Saturday the 21st and both came away feeling happy and satisfied. We LOVE good food and everything here was perfect. I LOVED my eggs florentine - perfectly cooked eggs and beautiful hollandaise sauce. Potatoes were amazing - I couldn't stop eating them and finished my plate. Fresh squeezed OJ. The food here used to be much better, so I was surprised by today's meals... The servings were quite small, much smaller than We remembered and it was okay.. My wife loved her gnocchi Siciliana. My salmon was okay, but a small filled for 17. The grilled cheese sandwich was about 3.5 inches in length. The salmon fettuccine was pretty good. Was in for a quick takeout. I ordered a vegetable omelette. Cones with side of hash brown and toast. Taste - 2/5 Service- 3/5 (waiter ordered an extra hash brown without asking me? Started out with the pumpkin crepes and the blintzes (with blueberry sauce). Delicious, both. We ended up also getting a omlette with feta and spinich. That was a bit less flavorful, but also may have not been as delicious because we had just polished off two highly flavorful dishes. As far as diners go Cafe Mason is average, but there are a few items on the menu that go beyond a typical cafe. They serve a couple of really nice gnocchi dishes as well as typical diner fare. They are open 24 hours a day and are much better than the other two diners within 100 feet of their location. read more

The only food leftover were a few slices of pizza and two wings, which I took home because no one else wanted to and I wasn't about to watch pizza and wings go to waste. Dessert was fantastic. I went with the ice cream sandwich that was made with roasted banana ice cream sandwiched between two lemon cookies. That was great. I also ordered the Peaches Peaches Peaches cocktail, which amused the waiter, and loved it. If you love peach and fruity cocktails, that's the one for you. This seemed to be a good venue for a party of our size. The wait staff didn't seem overwhelmed, we had plenty of room at the long table we were seated at for drinks and plates, and the room was quiet enough that we had no issue hearing each other talk, even down the table. Solid venue for a team dinner with really good food. Just one note though: take a look at the food options in the drink menu. It's in the main lobby opposite Reception. The hotel's Powell Street entrance is now only for Bourbon Steak patrons. To access the hotel proper, one must go around the corner and enter via the door on Geary Street by the porte-cochère. It's a pleasant space, filling one side of the lofty lobby. Marble floor and counters. Wooden café tables. You order food and/or coffee at the counter and if you are dining in, you'll get a number to put on your table and someone will bring your food to you when it's ready. For coffee, just wait around and it will be ready shortly. The menu includes pastries, sandwiches, pizza, and pasta, depending on the time of day. There are grab-and-go pre-made food items in a cooler, along with a variety of beverages. Packaged snacks are also displayed for purchase. The prices for the chips and such are well in excess of what you'd pay a a local shop, of which there are several down on Market Street. You're paying for convenience. In the course of my most recent stay at the St. Francis, I had coffee several times, as well as a breakfast sandwich and a pepperoni pizza. I have had their pasta on previous visits. The food and coffee are generally good and the people behind the counter are nice. I was particularly impressed with the pizza, which is among the better ones I've had from a hotel restaurant. The breakfast sandwich was okay, but nothing to write home about. It was supposed to have prosciutto and tomatoes, but what was on the roll was mostly egg. The pasta is pretty good. I like the Nonna's Ragu, if you're wondering what sauce to choose. It's hotel prices, but pretty solid if you don't want to leave the hotel. They do close at 9:00 p.m. as of this writing, and the hotel doesn't have any other grab-and-go kiosk, so be sure to get what you need before it gets too late. Otherwise your only other option will be to go out or order the pricey in-room dining.

They even offer a few stuffed animals and miscellaneous items here as well so it's worth checking our of you're staying here, but to anyone in the city looking for a place to eat, this is not somewhere I would plan to visit unless you are already a guest in the hotel.
