Great food, fast service and nice ambience for a good breakfast. I had "swedish pancake" with blueberry compote and whip cream. Served with lots of very fresh fruit. While the pancakes were really more of a crepe, they were delicious. The billion dollar bacon was good and my husband had the nuevos rancheros which came with a side of hash browns. He said they were both delicious. I would highly recommend. We saw the line outside the door and almost left, but it moves quickly and we only waited 10-5 minutes for a table. read more

Great selection! They have anything and everything for anyone and everyone! Hubby and I woke from a long nap after strolling around pier 39. And every place was closed! We were super hungry! This restaurant was down the street from our hotel! Open 24hrs! Everything was delicious! Restrooms were clean! But, you can smell tuna from the dinning area... by the window. That's the only thing! There are a bazillion choices for breakfast when staying in Union square, and I'm glad we chose Mason Diner. We weren't looking for a bougie dining experience and to spend a bunch of money so it was perfect. I got the croque madame which was really good, sweet and savory without being too heavy. My fiance got the seafood crepes which were delicious!! We both got coffee which was OK tasting, our cups never went below half full and it was hot and fresh. The service was a tiny bit slow, but it started to get pretty busy so it was understandable. Prices weren't bad, especially for the area, and the food was good quality and good portions. If we ever find ourselves in need of breakfast in Union Square again Mason Diner will definitely be on our radar! read more

We had brunch here - for nostalgic reasons after 13 years, and should have noticed that perhaps this place was a a pale image of what it once was. Other than the few sprinkled tables of tourists, the restaurant was empty. The food was just ok, but the service was horrible. In a city with great dining options, this place is overpriced for the quality of service and food. We had to ask for napkins, silverware, water, condiments. And the server had one other table! It would have been nice if the coffee I had ordered was served hot (or at least warm). I guess we got our closure - never to return ever again! read more

I was here in May 2019 and I think the name of the restaurant is now Mason Diner. I was on vacation in San Francisco and ate there twice for breakfast. The interior is very nice, the tables and booths are well made and solid, and the food is what you'd expect from a nice Americana restaurant. While I did not eat lunch or dinner there, their menu has a wide variety of cuisine and also has a nice selection of seafood as well. This restaurant has typical American food, it's fresh, tastes good and the wait staff are nice. If you want nice traditionally made American food, this is a nice place to dine. What is amazing is that it's open 24 hours. I walked past this restaurant late at night and I could see many people eating late meals, some people where eating nice big grilled sandwiches and I could see other dishes through the windows. Many restaurants have plain white walls and have very few decorations. But the good news is that Mason Diner (formerly Cafe Mason) has a very contemporary and warm interior. It really, just about, has the look and feeling of a casino restaurant. I recommend this restaurant if you want to eat good food, at a fair price, with a nice comfortable interior, and with a nice wait staff. read more

came here because the hotel we are staying at offers a 20% coupon for this place. my friend tried order around 9am and the phone never stopped ringing. we then just went in person to order and it was moderately busy so the unanswered call was somewhat understandable. i ordered an all meat omelet with mushrooms and wheat bread. the omelette itself was super salty, way too much salt for my liking. the hash browns and toast were average. also, just a heads up the actual photos of the menu on yelp are not updated because when we asked for banana nut bread they looked at us funny so i suggest ordering from the online menu instead. overall, service wasn't spectacular and the omelette was too salty but otherwise pretty average read more

I only went here because it was right next to my hotel and I got a voucher that said 20 percent off. However after tax and the gratuity charge even though I got takeaway and received no service it cost only a dollars less than I would have paid originally; so no bargain. I got the grilled red snapper which can be requested to be blackened in white wine sauce with stir fry beans and rice. While I waited to get my food, the kitchenn staff came out to have their own meals and chat in Spanish. I didn't see any patrons arrive in cafe mason while I was there. My fish smelt delicious and the buttery shiny beans were scrumptious. In contrast, my fish was very dry and hardened and there was minimal white wine sauce at the bottom which had seeped into the cardboard box so I tasted nothing except dry fish. The rice had bits of corn in it and appeared flavored and was quite nice on its own. Its a 24/7 diner and I would go here for convenience rather than for quality food. They don't do all day breakfast or lunch. :( read more

Says A LOT when Daniel the Manager reaches out to customers. I wish them all the best. If the food freshness gets rectified, I will come back here in February or March when I visit SF again. We had a 20% coupon for staying at the King George which was amazing but the food is not worth it. The salads we ordered were not fresh and the chocolate cake was stale, it was pretty dried out. I am only writing this review because it is mediocre food that is expensive af. Good service, our waiter was a sweetheart but that blonde guy who seated us, find a new job if you are unhappy. Pull this kind of crap, stale food and pms'y behavior as a host in San Diego or LA and you are out of business. I like extra syrup, and this little individualized pitcher gave even me enough for my short stack: no way I could have eaten a third! A very positive vibe! The food (French toast 2x4) was delicious, warm, and made perfectly. Since I was eating alone I sat at the bar and right away was greeted and served with a smile. From where I was sitting I could see the 3 cooks cooking and smiling and laughing while being so busy. Even all the servers were positive and food never stayed up waiting to be delivered. Where do I begin... We just left this so called restaurant and disappointment doesn't even come close. Its a Tuesday night... Busy... One server... Staff sitting down... Drinking and eating... Our order... Completely messed up... Drinks were wrong... Our party of 6 was verbally assaulted... We called the police because off duty staff hovered over our table... We got a little scared... WORST service ever!!!!!! Very unprofessional. The staff was horrible, no sense of urgency or accuracy when taking your order, 4 of the 6 entrees were wrong, & no drink refills. Our server had a bad attitude from the start, and if you go at night there is NO manager on duty & this is probably the reason these employees don't care about their guests needs. We had an altercation with the staff because of the horrible service & instead of apologizing & making it right they decided to verbally attack us & flip us off. The cops were involved to mediate the situation because the staff was so hostile towards us. We asked the staff for the manager contact info & they refused to give us any information. I came here quite a few times during the week due to it being 24 hours service and my jetlag having become serious around Mon/Tues - we're talking about 1am and 4am fully awake starts to the day - so I had some very early breakfasts and late night dinners here. A proper American restaurant, there's definitely better food out there but it's actually pretty decent considering the average wait time is around 10 mins. I'm in search of a stellar replacement for the amazing corned beef hash from the old Joe's of Westlake so I tried the homemade corned beef hash here this afternoon. It wasn't much better than canned and there wasn't much of it. Lesson learned. That wasn't the cause of the one star. The Crepe Veronica was pretty good and it came with a healthy fruit plate as a side which I think would have really complimented the savory of the crepes. Unfortunately there was a freshly plucked pube garnishing the fruit plate. Her meal was comp'd but still I'm done. It just made me wonder what they do in the kitchen. Busy spot. Food was good and came out quickly despite how busy they were. The coffee and orange juice was good. The only downside is it's relatively small inside, so we were seated shoulder to shoulder with other diners. Again, I always seem to get ONE hot item on my plate and this morning it was the hash browns. It's like they don't have any plate warmers as the food gets placed in front of the cooks for delivery. No time to send it back because of my time constraints. Place is always packed and servers are always moving, but sitting at the counter, you can easily observe that the plates don't sit for long. You don't get much more A-OK than Cafe Mason. At least not on the business end of Union Square (and by business end I mean the part that rubs right up against the TL). They've got quite an array of lunch-and-dinner menu items. More than they need to have. Honestly, their menu could be half its size, and people would still come here. But they put in the extra effort, and while the food isn't the best in the world, it's not bad either. They've also got quite an array of female servers. I only mention their gender because every one I've seen is a woman, and they all seem to be from different countries. There's at least one Belorussian, and there are two others who could be from France, Belgium, or the Netherlands. I'm going with Belgium because each one has both French and Dutch characteristics. It's apparently pretty busy in the morning, but at dinnertime, it's basically empty. But unlike in many empty restaurants, the service is attentive and quick. And it's always clean. My main complaint with the place is that the lettuce in their large salads isn't pre-cut. So you've got to spend some time doing your own food prep. That's not the biggest deal, but it is annoying with a large salad because all the other ingredients (and the dressing?) are already in there, so you're trying to work around stuff for no good reason. read more

I was in the Union Square area the other night and a friend and I were about to go to First Crush around the corner, but we just decided to go here cause it was right next to the King George Hotel, where we were about to attend a workshop. I don't know if I was just jonesing for comfort food that night or I just had the munchies or what (ok actually that could have had a lot to do with it) but I had an outSTANDING dinner here. True, a friend of mine was treating me and the free food factor always makes me less critical, but.... we were raving all night about how much we enjoyed our dinner. We had some kind of batter fried Zuchhini, Tortellini, pumpkin soup, and a caesar salad. At first when I saw the caesar salad I was surprised it looked like just a bunch of romaine leaves spread out on the plate with some parmesan on top. I thought, what the hell kind of a salad is THIS? Couldn't they at least cut up the lettuce? But then when we dug in, me and my friend were going, holy crap this is the best caesar salad ever. The dressing on the leaves was awesome, and it turned out to be the perfect "finger food." My friend commented that she couldn't believe that dinner had absolutely no meat in it. It was soooo tasty and filling. A little greasy, yeah, but soooooooooooo worth it. I liked the reddish interior too, and our waitress was great. No problems whatsoever. 5 Stars. read more

In the best possible meanings of the word, Café Mason is mediocre. It's a place where folks in the kitchen prepare hot food and servers bring it to you, and it's open into the later evening, but that's about it. The food was adequate, the service somewhat sub-par (a few minutes after my hot dishes arrived I finally fetched my own silverware; forget the bread & butter and water which never arrived). The dining area and the bathrooms were clean, and that counts. This is a perfectly adequate place to have a meal, but it's nothing more than that. read more

The staff was friendly, we were greeted upon entering and seated promptly. The decorum is nice and cozy. We were so pleased with our late night snack that we went for breakfast the following morning. The menu offers items prepared on the healthy side. My dish bay shrimp & vegetable frittata: the vegetable melody was a good selection for this dish, none over powered the other. So, the waitresses here are super nice. This bad review is not about the service. The service was excellent. I asked for a medium rare steak. I usually don't take food back, but the steak was so overlooked, it was inedible. I watched as the waitress took the steak back and the two cooks looked at eachother, smirked and gave her a hard time. Poor lady. So she comes back 5 minutes later and the steak comes back almost raw. I used to love this place, so unfortunate. I was there on 4/25/15 around midnight. After I received the response from Daniel the GM, I called and left a message for him with one of the managers. I never heard back from Daniel, so I don't know how serious this establishment with customer service unfortunately. read more

Too drunk to know better ... the herd of drunk sheep and I walked here after partying over at Lot 46 per the suggestion of a bouncer at the club. The dingy fluorescent lights should have been warning enough to run the other way but sheep go where they are told. Although we were seated immediately, it took a long while to finally get acknowledged by the wait staff ... understandable cause it's 3:00 AM and all the drunks are hungry and craving greasy foods. We got an order of sad shriveled little buffalo wings - which I neatly drenched in ranch dressing so they were palatable. My chicken quesadilla was 1/3 cheese and meat (right in the soggy middle) and the rest just tortilla. Imagine putting 1 standard slice of pepperoni in the middle of a frisbee and you get the idea. I ate the Swedish Pancakes (fruit crepes) and they were absolutely wonderful with a crispy, melt-in-your-mouth crust and a lovely mixture of apple-blueberry filling. My mother had a steak and was not as satisfied, so it may not be the best place for meat-based foods, but otherwise my experience was wonderful. read more

Avoid Victoria. Very rude Russian server that also talks about her tables in the back. She does not realize they can still hear her? Unprofessional and has so much attitude with ALL her tables if you watch her. She needs to work with plants, not people. There is an Asian lady that also serves during the lunch hour, she is perfect. Everything Victoria is not actually.. polite, efficient and professional. She also remembers my order! Love this place for a work lunch when the rest of Union Square is packed. Used to go here once or twice a week with co-workers but too many bad experiences with Victoria. Will maybe come back next year. read more
