Pros: the outdoor seating. Cons: service and price. We were here for 2.5 hours because it took 1 hour to get our food and at least 30 min to get serviced. They no longer have happy hour which was the only reason this place was worth it before. The sushi is ok but not the best. Let me start off by saying I'm from Southern California. My girlfriend lives in St. Louis right off of South Grand and we always go to Cafe Mochi when I'm here. Honestly, it's some of the best sushi I've ever had and I've been to some pretty high-end sushi and Japanese restaurants in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, etc. Their salmon, yellow tail, and mackerel sushi is incredible. read more

I recommend this place to all of my friends. The food is amazing and I believe it to be reasonably priced. Every time I have been here, I've had great service. The waiters seem to float between tables and while I thought it was unorganized at first, the friendliness of the staff helped me see that there was always someone to help me if I need something. The only thing about cafe Mochi that I'm not a fan of is the location. It's hard to find parking nearby so if I come with my grandparents I have to drop them off in front and then go find a spot on a side street. Over the summer I like to come here and sit on the patio which is lovely at dinner time except for the homeless people and crackheads who try to collect money from me while I eat. And because Grand is such a busy street, you constantly hear horns and engines being revved which isn't real pleasant. One time I was there and witnessed an accident happen in the middle of the intersection. Despite those things, I still feel like this place deserves all 5 stars. read more

Although there is not a huge selection of beverages to choose from, $2 or $3 per drink and the particularly yummy pink geisha is quite sufficient to make me happy. Sushi was 1/2 price with a few exceptions. I have been here twice so far and I enjoyed the inexpensive eats and drinks. We got delivery from here recently and it was delish! The rolls were huge and worth the price. We also got crab rangoons which my boyfriend said he thinks are the best in the city. They were a good balance of sweet and salty but maintained a bit of fishiness that crab rangoons don't normally have. Like other reviews say, it does take a while to get, I think ours took about an hour, but it was worth the wait! I would definitely order from here again and would recommend it to friends! read more

I will start by saying I am a sushi snob. I have had pretty good sushi in a few different places. This restaurant was a complete let down. The service was really slow. We ordered fried rice which was okay and spring rolls which were also just okay. While they have a lot of options for sushi, the rolls we ordered were not good. We got the Fuji and the caterpillar roll. The caterpillar was not extremely bad, but it was drowned in eel sauce and spicy mayo. The Mount Fuji was awful. Nice sushi bar! We visited this place during happy hours (4:30-6:30pm) for a quick snack and the happy hour deal is pretty solid. All the basic rolls are half off and you can order a lot without spending too much. However their speciality rolls are still full priced and I would recommend trying those too. Normally I'm please with the service, however; this evening I was highly disappointed and felt disrespected. I had dinner with 2 other adults and 3 children ages 2,3 and 5. The waiter brought the bill and charged us extra for a drink. When I brought it to his attention, they adjusted it, but brought the bill back with 20% gratuity which was not on the original bill. When I asked about it, the man was super rude. I asked for my original waiter who never returned to the table and who always provides amazing service, bur didn't return to address my concerns. The menu does state gratuity for 5 or more guest, but come on, with 3 kids on under the age of 5. If that was the case, the gratuity should have been added on the first bill, not when they made a mistake, corrected it and then added the gratuity. Finally, the service did not warrant a 20% tip. We were the first arrive and the food took super long and we had to remind them about our drinks. Again, the service didn't warrant the 20%. I will not be returning. read more

The server finally brought out one entree (which was cold) and said she forgot about the other abs had to have them make it. We had to wait a half hour for the second plate to come out so by the time I got my food my partner was done eating. This is hands down my favorite place for sushi! I live insanely close to cafe mochi and finally wondered in to give it a try. I ordered the lobster roll, miso soup, and crab rangoon. The lobster roll will blow your mind! It was an insane amount of food and every bite was amazing. Café Mochi is a great sushi restaurant located on South Grand's fantastic international dining district. Most people know them for their happy hour in the early evenings that includes a vast variety of their basic roll selection. I find this to be one of the best happy hour deals in town especially if you're a sushi lover. However I have found the service to be quite slow during that time. This visit I came on a Friday night when it was busy for dinner service and sat upstairs with a friend and my baby in tow. The waitress was friendly and accommodating to find us a table with adequate room for my baby carrier. My roll was wonderful and had fried coconut shrimp which is unique to any other sushi restaurant I've tried in town. I had a great meal as usually and will definitely be back many more times in the future. read more

Really charming sushi spot! I'm not totally sure if they still offer their Tuesday happy hour deals on sushi, but if so- that's the time to go. It's really busy during that time, and it creates a really fun atmosphere! We always loved to squeeze in at the bar if there was room and watch the staff prepare our sushi order. We came in for lunch on a Saturday and got the tuna tataki appetizer, the Godzilla roll, and the spider roll. The tuna was very flavorful, and a decent portion for an appetizer. Both rolls were bigger (longer?) than I expected. The Godzilla roll had SO MUCH stuff in it, maybe too many flavors going on for me. I really liked their version of the spider roll. I have no idea why people think sushi here is great. Very sticky rice and almost no seasoning (usually at least vinegar and sugar). Too much rice for the nigiri and as well as rolls. Thin slice of sashimi on top of the rice which I can barely taste salmon. The host said that I can take it to go even tho the price of 1/2 for happy hour. But then when I asked to take it to go, the lady who forgot my water order, told me my left over food need to be full price and blah blah. I asked her I already paid for my meal. I got a little upset because she gave me no apology and didnt even bother to say it nicely about it. I told her "food was not even that good". And she became all defensive about it and almost yelled at me "Why you taking it to go then??!" What ? First of all, I was a server at one of the main restaurant in Washington DC for a year. I normally tip very well and understand every situation that server go through but first, things like this, she should have explained nicely like "Excuse me mam, usually, we do not allow to-gos to be discounted but we will allow you this time" not like she was so right about it and had to scold on me. Secondly, if a customer said that food was not good, she should be apologizing instead of arguing with me nor rolling eyes on me and giving me attitude. Usually servers say "What could I make you happy? What was so bad about it?" politely. I paid $48 for the meal and got no excuse or apology.
