Unfortunately it's gone downhill. The food was so salty it was inedible. The clam chowder was so bad I left mine after about three spoonfuls. The calamari was chewy and greasy. The fried shrimp was greasy. The baked haddock was tiny, fresh, but the topping way too salty. I should have checked Yelp before we went, but we were looking forward to returning. We took a day trip up to Maine and asked a local for a low key, laid back place to get lunch. On his suggestion, we tried the Cape Neddick Lobster Pound. It was before noon on a soggy Saturday & a few tables were already seated. The view would have been fantastic if it were a nicer day, but I'm not docking points for the rain. We have a toddler and neither the hostess nor our waitress got us crayons & paper for her. They have high chairs and kids are obviously allowed, but that's about the extent of the hospitality. Luckily I come prepared for places like this and we had plenty of our own crayons & toys to keep our daughter busy. The service was rather slow considering there were fewer than 6 tables seated when we went in. I ordered a lobster roll and while it was 'good' it was bland, over priced and not a very generous portion size. (It comes served on a long roll, on a bed of lettuce - easily gave me the idea that I had a bigger portion than I had.) My husband got fish & chips. They came out piping hot, but again, was bland. Honestly the food was fine, but nothing special at all. Our waitress was pleasant, but obviously disorganized. She brought the drinks for our table and another at the same time and served us the drinks to the other table. It also took at least 15 minutes to bring us the bread. The service was so slow that our daughter had lost her patience - my husband took her to the car while I waited to pay for the bill. It took another 5 minutes to deliver the bill to the table for us to leave. There are many better, more affordable and enjoyable places to go in this area for lunch. If you are in it for the view and not much else, then this place will suffice, but I'd rather drive a little further north and go to a place in Ogunquit. read more

I am a regular here. I have to say, this place is very consistent. A personal favorite of mine, and I believe it to be one of their signature dishes, is the baked stuffed lobster. Very, very good. The waitstaff here is also top notch. Very attentive and great with kids. One of the only downfalls of the restaurant is that they lack a kids menu, but the "Lighter Fare" part of the menu suffices for kids from 8-15. I totally recommend giving this place a try. They have a very cool bar and the views are really nice. As a side note, I never fill out a review card, but we went there this week while on vacation and our waitress was one of the best we have ever had at any restaurant in the area so I filled one out. We have been dining out here in the greater York area for over 20 years so I consider myself a bit of a York foodie. read more

As somewhat of a local, I've been frequenting Cape Neddick Lobster Pound for ages. The word consistent is an understatement. Many other restaurants in the area have given me great meals and experiences, but upon returning I've been less than satisfied. Cape Neddick Lobster Pound always delivers and it has become an old standard for myself, my family, and my friends, who find the place to be their favorite in York. The only buyer beware statement I'd give is to be mindful of the prime rib. I have had some of the best pieces of prime rib at Cape Neddick and I've often left with a side-splitting full stomach because of it. It is simply an incredible meal when they have it on special. HOWEVER, if you are very particular with your steaks, be sure to check with the waitress about what kind of cuts are still available. If you show up later in the evening (after 7:00) all of the rare portions tend to be already medium or beyond. This has been a particular issue on a few occasions when we first started frequenting CNLP. Now that I'm a seasoned pro, I know to avoid it so that I'm not disappointed. At this point I've almost had everything on the menu except the lobster dishes. Each meal has been worthy of high praise for a local New England joint. I'm not a personal fan of lobster but I can promise you that everyone I know swears by the Baked-Stuffed Lobster, Lazy Man's Lobster, or the Lobster Bouillabaisse. We had never been here before and just basically searched for "lobster pound" Maine and wound up in Cape Neddick. Went on a Sunday afternoon for a late lunch. Sat outside on the deck and had a great view. All 4 of us had the baked stuffed lobsters. Great stuffing. We also had the steamers and they were exceptional! Clean, sweet tasting and served piping hot! Our server was very friendly and personable as well. We also ordered 2 bottles of the Mumms Napa sparkling. Great price for a restaurant at $40. I've been going there for decades. Under new ownership this venue has retained high prices and a nice location. However:The quality of the food, service and utensils have decrepitated since two years ago. We don't expect plastic implements to attempt to eat steamed lobster in the SHELL at these prices. On a day trip up to Maine yesterday with my parents and dog in tow we were lucky to end up here. We take an annual trip to Chauncy Creek Lobster pond, and I had remembered seeing dogs there in the past. However once we arrived we found out dogs were no longer allowed, fail on my part. So after a quick google search we decided to head to Cape Neddick. They have a small deck area in the back off the bar where dogs are allowed, it is overlooking the water and very chill. The staff was so nice, and we were kind of pains, the dog, a broken glass etc. they got clean water for the dog, were lovely to chat with and never forgot about us out on the little deck. For food, we had steamers and boiled lobsters and everything was great. The steamers were clean ( I hate when they are sandy) and the lobster Delivered on the high expectation of the deliciousness of Maine Lobster. I am hoping to go back soon, sans pooch, so we can sit inside and enjoy the amazing views! read more

So was in Portsmouth for the afternoon and wanted to get a lobster dinner but didn't want to go to far north up the Maine coast. I drove a little bit and took a shot at lobster pound. This place looks like your typical cape seafood restaurant with the summer regulars enjoying their seafood. The bar is really big and I got a spot there. Had a local Maine brew and ordered the lobster. The bartender was super nice and the price of the lobster was well writhin reason. About 25 bucks or so. It came with potatoes and carrots. The lobster was really sweet and great flavor. Seemed like it was fresh and right out of the ocean. Definitely a cool spot to eat and watch the tide come in. This was the most disappointing meal that we have had in this area. We come every year that we vacation and usually look forward to a great meal with good service, this year was anything but. The hostess (maybe the new owner?) was rude. We called ahead and when we arrived and gave her our name her response was, "okay?... we still don't have a table for you." We should have left right then and there. We ordered the New England clam chowder which was NOT a New England recipe at all. It was extremely thick with little to no clams. We also ordered the fried seafood platter which was usually a favorite. It arrived at half the size, cold, and contained microscopic, freezer bag style shrimp/seafood. The most underwhelming however, was the lazy mans lobster. It also arrived cold, and less lobster meat than you would even get in a regular lobster roll. SAVE YOUR MONEY and SAVE YOUR TIME. We do eat here every Year for Lobsters ..Never again.... The service was excruciatingly Slow. We had 8 people. We all ordered Appetizers. Took 30 minutes to arrive but they forgot mine. 20 more minutes before i got mine but everyone else was done. Took another 30-45 minutes to get the Entrees but again one person ( not me ) didn't get theirs. Another 20-25 minutes for that to come. Apparently our waitress was new ( 2 weeks on the job ). However the food was mediocre at best and the Baked potato was inedible. We stopped by to have a few drinks and apps while driving up the coast. Bad decision. Ordered stuffed clams. Turned them back. Inedible and disgusting to say the least. We then turned to an order of clam chowder. Much the same. Not a New England recipe. The bar tender told us that there was a new chef on board. Evidently a chef who has never cooked New England shellfish. We heard other negative comments from other customers on the way out and in the parking area. Save your money and keep going up the coast. 3 of us Sat at the bar. Watching the kids jump into the water. Sue told us her name at least twice. We ordered a frozen mudslide, and 2 beers. I then asked for a water when she got a minute. We ordered 2 orders of oysters on a half shell, shrimp artichoke dip, 1 crab cake and fried calamari. My friends enjoyed a couple shots. Another order of oysters please (all the apps came except the calamari) while waiting for the calamari. Sue asked if we were all set and we said yes. No big deal she forgot the calamari. Received the bill and the shots were not on it. My friend was checking to be sure the calamari was not on it. It wasn't. She apologies and took it back and adjusted the bill. The oysters were fabulous!! So fresh and delicious! Dip had way too much crackers. Crab cake was over done and not that tasty. I had to ask again for the water. Friends ordered baked stuffed lobsters and couldn't eat the stuffing because it "tasted like sand". My husband ordered surf and turf - smallest filet ever with a teaspoon of lobster meat on top! My salmon was average but the green beans were delicious! As for ambiance, even after the sun set, it was still uncomfortably warm in the restaurant. Won't be a next time for us. read more

Unfortunately this place is a tourist trap. If you are hungry and know your seafood (ie clams and lobster ) there are many other places which provide reasonable portions at a fair price. My wife and I had lobster stew which came in two teacups with about 5 or 6 tablespoons of stew and a couple small chunks of lobster ($19!!). Next we had the fried clams which we split. $30 for a total of 10 clams (5 apiece). This was basically a $30 basket of French fries. I don't mind paying good money for good food and fair portions. This restaurant was overpriced and underserved. In fairness the service was good. Otherwise very disappointing. read more

What better way to top off a day trip to the southern Maine coast than with a lobster dinner? We'd heard about this place before and when we happened to drive by we decided to give it a shot. It was packed, an hour wait for a table we were told, but we decided we'd stick out the wait. I mean if a place is that crowded there's got to be a reason for it. We were actually seated much more quickly than expected which was nice. Drinks were ordered and delivered promptly, though my Pepsi came out a diet. I was thirsty so I downed it anyway and waited for the waitress to come back so I could get another one. Problem is, she never came back. Two empty cups of soda and two empty waters were never refilled! And as you'll soon see there was plenty of time to get one. It was nearly forty-five minutes after we got our drinks that we next saw our waitress. Forty-five minutes! And she didn't have any food with her. "There's been a small kitchen fire and your food's been delayed, it'll be another 20-30 minutes". Now, I understand this isn't her fault, but I would have hoped to hear the word "apologize" or "sorry" in her explanation to us (even if she didn't care), but nothing of the sort. A brief, curt explanation for the delay. Oh, and no drink refills, as she scooted away before we could ask. We didn't see her again for nearly the half hour it took for her to come back with our food. About the food: Honestly, not bad. I mean it was just a couple of boiled lobsters, something that it seems to me would be rather hard to mess up, but also hard to really make stand out as outstanding. They were good. Quite honestly, when the waitress (finally) came to clear our plates I half-expected her to apologize and tell us they'd give us a free dessert, or comp us one of the meals because quite frankly nobody, anywhere, should be expected to pay full price for a dinner that they waited over an hour and a half to get. Seriously, there was a table of six next to us who were seated after we had placed our order, they received apps, meals, entrees, checks, and were gone before our food arrived. I want to give one star for our awful experience, but I recognize that we probably were just victims of bad luck last night. A kitchen fire: shit happens. Inattentive waitress: could be that she was embarrassed at how long stuff was taking and was trying to avoid confrontation (not that that would be good waitressing). On the other hand, not receiving the simplest of "I'm sorry"'s and actually having to pay full price is, to me, unforgiveable. In the end I'll give two. I know it's not as bad as the experience was for us. If it were closer by I'd even be willing to give it another shot, but for a place that 75+ miles from home and was supposed to be the capper to a nice day-trip it'll probably always leave a bad taste in my mouth. read more

I went on the recommendation that this place had a great lobster roll, so that was what I ordered. The lobster roll was sizable, but served on a giant hot dog bun, which is always a big minus for me and lobster rolls. Went to dinner here on a Saturday night with a group of friends recently. Restaurant has a fun friendly casual atmosphere. drinks were flowing and there was good selection of lobster and seafood items. I got the grilled scallops with feta on spinach with garlic mashed potatoes. It was very good. Side salad was ala carte - blue cheese dressing was yummy. I thought it should have been included in the meal tho. The waitress was very attentive, she allowed us to have separate checks. Plenty of parking with nice views of the water. It was a little expensive but a nice evening out with friends. I gave 3 stars because it was very loud in there and I couldn't hear the conversations. read more

Stopped in here on a drive up Maine coast. We had to try the lobster roll of course. BIG mistake. Very small for price and the lobster was minced, say what ? Yes, minced lobster meat. Chopped up very small pieces, couldn't even tell if it was claw or tail. It was also loaded with mayo. So much mayo it was actually runny. Tried the clam chowder too. That wasn't bad, hence the second star. Service was bad too. Very surly waitress. It was 3PM, after lunch and before dinner, and not crowded at all. Who knows what her prob was !? My boyfriend and I stopped in around 3:15p. We were both really excited to try a lobster roll and we were so hungry we didn't want to drive any further. We were seated promptly with a nice view of a little dock. It took awhile for a waitress to greet us, even though it seemed like there were plenty of girls working. We ordered the crab cakes and each got ourselves a lobster roll. The crab cakes took 30 minutes to come out... If you could even call it a crab cake. The inside was scalding hot and the outside was cool. Lots of breading. About 15 minutes later we got our lobster roll - 7/10. I thought it was unprofessional to see servers eating openly. Made reservations for 13 for 5 pm on a Saturday night The steamed mussels were cooked into raisins and the broth was basically dish water. The steamed soft shell clams were cooked into rubber bands. The shrimp scampi was over cooked shrimp served over pasta with garlicky dish water. The boullibase for $36, was over cooked steamed seafood with a glob of marinara sauce slopped on top. The 4 ounces of broiled scallops for $26 were broiled to oblivion. The best things on the menu were the lobster stew app, the lobster avacado salad and the filet mignon on top of lobster stew. To tell you the truth I would go back just for those menu items alone. As a restaurant owner and chef, I can feel the pain of the owners of this establishment. The pool of talented and reliable line cooks and kitchen staff has rapidly deminished over the years. It must be even worse with a seasonal biz. I've noticed a couple of reviews noting Cape Neddick's consistency. I think they're probably right -- consistency is the watchword. As seasonal locals for more than 20 years, we continue to return to CNLP, each summer, even if it's only once per summer. Last night was more miss than hit for me, personally, but for the family as a whole, it was a good experience. We were seated as soon as we walked through the door, which is unusual. The house was full, too, so swift seating was an extra pleasant surprise. Our service was prompt and solid throughout the meal, so hats off to the waitstaff. The food (last night) is where hit/miss comes in. Our party of five (3 kids, two parents) decided against table-wide starters (when we do order family apps, it's usually the crab cakes), because CNLP isn't cheap, and we wanted to actually eat the food for which we'd come. My husband had the lobster stew (I stole a spoonful and it was fantastic) and an order of fish and chips. The stew was extraordinary. The fish and chips were good. I had a cup of clam chowder (on the bland side, even after a liberal sprinkling of pepper), and a lobster roll. At first sight the lobster roll looked amazing, but it was subpar. I don't ding a place for adding celery (which CNLP does NOT) or lettuce (which CNLP does TO A FAULT), unless/until there's more of that in the sandwich than there is lobster meat. CNLP's lobster roll was on an extra long bun. It wasn't, however a New England Style bun, so... boo! Also, there was so much lettuce (and way too fricking much mayo). There was no discernible tail or claw meat in the thing, and it cost nearly $17.00. Right now, in Maine, lobster is cheaper than hamburger, so this mayo-heavy knuckle meat, lettuce overladen sham left me feeling hollow, as well as disappointed in an old York standby restaurant. Also, I ordered a glass of Pinot Noir (which yeah, doesn't go with chowder and lobster rolls, but I know what I like). It was so bad, I couldn't finish it. I later ordered a glass of Shiraz (which was no better and tasted so much like the alleged Pinot Noir that by the end of the night, I was sure they were both glasses of Cabernet from bottles that had been opened two summers ago). Son #1 ordered chicken, but was soon informed they were out, so he got a burger. It was fine, but burgers at CNLP cost far more than they are worth. Daughter ordered Chef's Salmon. She didn't like it, but she thinks that's a matter of her personal taste, rather than execution. It was in a strawberry sauce that was far too heavy for her taste. Youngest Son just got a grilled cheese and fries. They were fine, but we both suspect the fries are frozen jobbies, rather than freshly cut and fried, which is silly. We're in Maine, which, when it isn't all about lobsters, is all about potatoes. Whenever I have the Shore dinner (steamers and lobsters) or just a lobster dinner at CNLP, I leave satisfied and smiling. Whenever I don't (and last night I just wasn't hungry enough to order an old favorite) I know I'm playing Russian Roulette. That said, the views are lovely. Those commenters who didn't like the view (not to mention the legally blind person who said CNLP looks like the Brady Bunch house) need to see their ophthalmologist. The service was, as it always is for us, excellent. Don't confuse front of house ability with back of house SNAFUs. Will we come back next summer? Oh, probably. Will we return again this summer? Probably not. Lobster is so cheap in state right now, that it makes way more sense to have it at home, and since the lobster dinners are CNLP's most reliable meal, there's little immediate incentive to return. Still, the views are lovely, the staff is efficient and friendly, the place is clean and the service is solid. Just order the lobster and you'll be happy. read more

From the outside, this place reminds me of one of those legendary restaurants and I thought I'd regret entering. A darkish bar and restaurant greet you, but I wanted outside. EXTRAORDINARY!! My husband and I hosted a rehearsal dinner at CNLP for 140 people last week and it was the most amazing wonderful event. The look is Maine at its best- a shack with buoys hanging from its side and inside a warm , inviting setting overlooking a sleepy river inlet. But most importantly the food- absolutely delicious- from tasty informal apps like pigs in blanket and shrimp cocktail, to a full lobster bake dinner - the very best clam chowder, the sweetest lobster and mouthwatering blueberry crisp topped with local vanilla ice cream.
