Come for the burger, stay for the beer! Unfortunately, the star was for the service and fish and chips. For some background, I have lived in the neighborhood since I was 2 years old and have seen businesses come in and out of that space. I'm happy they've stayed as long as they have and also expanded to Lilah's. That being said the staff there always seems miserable and the host never has a smile on his face. The first time I went I got the burger and sat near the bar at the window facing outwards. This was the only time I had a decent experience there. It was during brunch on Saturday morning, and while it took some time to receive our food it was very tasty with the egg on there. The second time was with my family; we did a full dinner and sat near the back. The only thing I remember this time was the dessert, it was advertised as a doughnut but when we received the dessert it was like a bread pudding (?) came in some melted ice cream or creme anglaise and some like coffee cake in the center. It was so far from a doughnut I had to send it back. The server even tried to convince me it was a doughnut too, which I found somewhat insulting. Then there was a time after that, when my boyfriend and I went back for the burger because it was a hit the first time we went. We also sat at the window and this time had a beer too. This time it was not as good and we didn't visit for a solid year. The beer was better than the burger... The burger felt chunky and greasy. Then, of course because I live so close I went again. This time with 0 expectations because of the hit-or-miss nature of this place. I sat outside on a Friday after a workout so I was ravenous. I settled on an app because I didn't want to be disappointed again. I did the Lamb Suppli and a citrus cucumber salad. To my surprise was delicious and I had to bring my boyfriend back to try it. So somehow I go again, with my boyfriend again. We start with the cucumber salad that was delicious with sunflower seeds and tasty vinagrette. But then, to classic fashion, our main the fish and chips- we SO BAD. The breading was completely soggy and separated from the fish. And to make matters worse there was like a couple tiny pieces of the fish as well. We ate the fries and paid the $27 for this unappealing fish and chips. It's unclear if I'll be back. I found this place on Yelp and wanted to give it a try around 4:15 pm with the family. It seemed promising as it is highly rated so why not go and try it, right? The restaurant was full so we went ahead and sat on the patio to enjoy the breeze. We arrived during the time where they serve their interesting midday menu - 3:00 - 5:00 pm. Dinner options were not available until 5:00 pm. The midday items - especially for the appetizers were scarce. They gave us a big brochure of bar drinks and a small listing of food items at the time. We can see what makes the money here but we were hungry and wanted food! Deviled Eggs - Only 3 and very tiny. Overpriced. Chicken Sandwich - So-So. Americana Burger - Bland and Overpriced. The cocktails on the menu seemed very enticing, so I had to try one. I ordered the Pandan Gin Daquiri. I got it purely based on the ingredients and flavor profile. Perfect after a walk in the Marina green or Fort Mason. We stopped by for a very late lunch around 3:30pm. The space has such a modern, warm design. I loved the decor, the lighting, and the street "parklet" seating. Everything was neat and the service was quick. I was surprised the food came out so quick! We got the burger which comes with a nice salad with a light lemon vinaigrette dressing. You can sub the salad for fries for an extra couple bucks. The burger was phenomenal!! It's def worth the hype. I think they use homemade pickles-I wish I asked for more! The cheese was melted perfectly, the burger had those crispy edges I like. I was stuffed at the end. All the same, the burger was worth every cent we paid! The flavors were balanced, meat high quality, and service timely. The real highlight was the side of crispy onion strings. Wow! They were unlike any other battered onion I've had before; incredibly light and crispy and not at all overpowering on the onion flavor (you can still kiss your cutie after eating these!). They were served in a massive HEAP with more than enough to share with another. The restaurant was very sophisticated with a modern art-deco atmosphere (peep the cool peacocks in the wallpaper!). They were able to squeeze us in at the seats by the window since we didn't have a reservation but it was still really nice. The inside is very colorful and vibrant with a cute bar area while the outside was also nice with more seating. Causwells is a solid bistro/gastropub-type restaurant in the Marina area serving approachable American food. It won't necessarily blow you away but everything will be good at the very least. The service is great and the staff is friendly. The decor is tasteful and creative. No, we did not get the burger. My excuse is that I wanted to add some variety to all of these burger-centric reviews (it's actually because we weren't in the mood for burgers, sorry about it). We came here at 7:30 on a Monday night. It was New Year's Day, meaning that 90% of the restaurants I looked at for this particular night were closed. Causwells was not, and while it was a bit further than I wanted to go, the menu was inviting and the reviews spoke for themselves. As expected, the restaurant wasn't too busy, with the bar full, and only one other party sitting in the dining room area. There was, however, a party sitting outside, which may be the cause of my only negative here. The door was open all night and by the end of the meal I was beginning to frost over. Of course it was the one night that I decided to not bring a jacket, a mistake I will never make again, but I was wearing a sweater and expected to be comfortable. Oh well, I am frosty no longer so it's not a big deal. Because we had properly celebrated New Year's Eve the night before, we were not feeling like drinking much on this particular night. I ended up getting a spritz (the Dasher Spritz w/ 400 conejos mezcal, mommenpop blood orange aperitif, pomegranate, lime, prosecco) which was serviceable in hindsight perhaps I didn't need it. I also enjoyed many a mezcal margarita the night before so perhaps another spirit would've been more appropriate. Live and learn. Food-wise, we did our usual thing and picked a bunch of things to split. We were both pretty hungry and the food was just the right amount. We mostly stuck to appetizers because we didn't want any sandwich-type stuff. Everything was good at the very least, a few things were great. Eats, below: Poke w/ ahi tuna, sesame, gluten free soy, watermelon radish, seaweed, spring onion, elmer's hot honey, taro crisps: A Coming in hot (well, technically cold) was our first course of the night which was perfectly executed and just the right amount of fish. All components worked beautifully together and I appreciated the taro chips served on the side. Cauliflower w/ crispy florets, puree, parsley breadcrumbs, chili: A Very very lightly breaded with panko so not crazy fried ("crispy" can look like a lot of things). The parsely breadcumbs added some nice flavor and the chili gave the dish a bit of kick. One of our favorites of the night. Seared Octopus w/ confit fennel, black vinaigrette, crispy gigante beans, salsa verde: A Another favorite, perfectly cooked octopus and the additions of the vinaigrette and salsa verde gave the dish maximum flavor. Sometimes the little things make all the difference. Brussels sprouts w/ brown butter, pickled red onion, sunflower seeds: B At first I thought these were great but then I quickly realized that they tasted like bread. I cannot explain it because to my knowledge there was no bread to be found in this dish yet the brussels had something going on that made them taste like garlic bread or focaccia. A little odd but not necessarily bad? Trout w/ cornmeal crust, herbed rice pilaf, seasonal local vegetables: B+ A solid main. Trout was steelhead so more similar to salmon. The trout itself was a bit bland but the rice pilaf was super flavorful so getting a bite with everything mixed together was the way to go. read more

And hot chocolate consistency is semi sweet and not too thick. Perfect for the banana bread to soak up the liquid but not get overwhelmed by the chocolate. My Summer stroll continues this time walking in the Marina on Chestnut street .The Marina is one of my favorite neighborhoods in San Francisco. It is surrounded by nature and has good places like bars ,cafes ,and restaurants. The Marina was struck hard with tragedy during the San Francisco earthquake damage of 1989. The Marina stayed resilient and is now the spot of mix locals and tourist who visit the Palace of Fine Arts or the Marina Green and Crissy Field coming from all around the world. I like a spot that serves different types of food and the burger is always the litmus test to see if the rest of the menu will be ordered. This is another revisit to see if the food has stayed consistent at Causwells. First I started with a Tiki drink and I tried the " Mango Sticky Rice" and was tasty amazing. It had forbidden rice cordial, mango, ube, coconut and rum. It is my new favorite tiki drink in San Francisco. On repeat. Tasty like paradise. I then had the Americana burger which was pretty juicy and it was as good as the last time I had it and the onion strings were crispy and so good. Very consistent and a big improvement there so many good things on their menu. A good overall spot in the Marina to grab a drink and food. My advice is to get the drink called the "Mango Sticky Rice" It was a nice surprise with tasty flavors of tropical paradise read more

I've been to causwells a few times for dinner but this was my first time for brunch and during the holiday time so they had their holiday drink menu. We had a reservation at noon and was quickly seated and noticed the restaurant was so busy already! Someone in her party did have a baby, but that wasn't an issue as we sat outside and was able to put the stroller next to the table. I got the shrimp and grits, and this was so good! The grits were perfectly seasoned and the Cajun flavor added a nice touch. For the drink, I got the Blitzen spritz which had persimmon some Prosecco, and it was so tasty and very easy to drink. Had a reservation for a celebratory dinner with a group of ten. The service was amazing! The cocktails were delicious and very unique! I got the porkbelly and it was good, but a little cold and not as crispy as I personally believe porkbelly should be. Overall, great experience. read more

Disappointing dining experience at Causwells. Our group or 5 ordered drinks immediately after being seated. After waiting 20 minutes for our drinks, the waitress takes our orders and in the process informs us they are out of 2 of the 7 entrees on the menu. One of the entrees they were out of was the only vegetarian option. The wait staff should have informed us when they sat us so we could decide if we still want to dine here with a limited menu. It is worth mentioning this was an 8pm reservation, 2.5 hours before closing. A limited menu should always be communicated to the patrons as soon as possible, especially when it is the only vegetarian option.
