I had the club sandwich on the rye bread - it was one of the best clubs I had ever had. For me, at least, the rye bread really ads the right flavor synergy. I arrived there at 12:15pm and the weight was about 10-15 minutes. Only 2 tables were empty and some people were just finishing up. Lots of activity, and the service was pretty good anyway. While I don't often make my way down the Peninsula for brunch, when I do, it always seems like I end up at Stacks. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing (as they're pretty solid), just that there are some decent alternatives around worth trying...like Christie's! After seeing so many positive reviews for them, and after having bookmarked them years ago, it was nice to finally to check them out after encountering a longer than expected line at Stacks. Although there was a small crowd waiting when we arrived (around 10am on a Saturday), our ten minute wait was a far cry from what you see at most places in SF (as well as Stacks). Similarly, unlike so many of SF's popular brunch spots, Christie's menu is more traditional, mostly made up of diner classics like omelettes, scrambles, pancakes, and waffles. A few dishes caught my eye, but I opted to try the CHICKEN FRIED STEAK ($11.95) that so many Yelpers have seemed to enjoy. Unfortunately though, I can't say I felt the same. Since this isn't something I often get, maybe I just don't have a scale to compare this against? While I did like the gravy and how crispy the steak was, everything else on the plate was rather "meh". The batter was decently seasoned, and the meat was moist, but the steak itself wasn't super flavorful to me (it also could have used more gravy). As for the eggs, they were cooked right (over easy), but they were a little oily to me. Then again, at least they weren't as disappointing as the hash browns were; not very crispy (a thinner layer would have been better), a bit starchy, and otherwise bland. Between the friendly service and the couple of other dishes that caught my eye (like the corned beef hash), I wouldn't be opposed to coming back and giving Christie's another shot. They've gotten enough praise on here to make me wonder if I would have had better luck trying something else. That being said, coming from SF, I'd be more inclined to try out some other places...or maybe going back to Stacks. read more

Ummm, where can I find a place like this in Los Angeles? Sure, we have a lot of diners but none with food or service like this. Stopped by this very warm atmosphere searching for food after leaving San Francisco. And if I didn't live so far I'd eat here multiple times a week. The food is fresh and cooked perfectly. You feel like a family member is in the kitchen. Speaking of which, I wonder if it's a family business? Our waitress was my favorite character. I didn't get her name but she was petite with dark hair, in her 50s with a no nonsense attitude. She has a strong energy and was very warm. Everyone else was professional as well. After our disappointing trip to Half Moon Bay at 3-Zero Cafe a few weeks back, I wanted to wipe that taste off of my mouth and decided to try Christie's after our recent trip to Burlingame. Wifey and I came here for brunch on a weekend as the crowd was dying down. Place was still packed, but we got seated in less than 10 minutes. One of my few complaints about this place is that our server was not as attentive to our table compared to others around us. Other than that, Wifey and I had a decent meal. We ordered the Onion Rings to share and I had the breakfast special. It was either Joe's or Christie's Special that came with Potatoes, Tomatoes, Italian Sausage and two eggs cooked to order. Wifey had the Omelette and their version of Hash Brown. Unlike 3-Zero Cafe, their Onion Rings were much, much, much better. It was crispy, plump and fresh. It wasn't burnt up and nuked unlike the aforementioned restaurant. We truly enjoyed this one and this was the best of our order. As soon as my order came and compared it Wifey's, I immediately had buyer's remorse....especially after tasting hers. I had to search for the sausages in my order and there were way too many potatoes in the dish proportionate to the size on the plate. It's kinda like opening a can of Pork and Beans and you can only find a few morsels of pork. Yeah...it went something like that. The eggs saved the dish as I slathered the yolk everywhere. Wifey's Omelette was definitely better than mine so she enjoyed it as much as I did. Coffee was at least decent and kept the refills going. It was our first time here so we didn't know we had to pay at the counter. Had we known in advance, we could've left sooner instead of wondering what happened to our server. Nice, family-owned diner in Burlingame Ave. I live around the corner and go here at least a few times a month to get my breakfast fix. Food is great, but only if you eat in. They're listed on DoorDash, but only deliver breakfast until 10am, which is kind of odd, and every.single.time I order chicken fried steak, they always forget the gravy. I know they read the special instructions, because that's where you note how your eggs should be cooked, so I know they read there, but how come you forget the one key thing on a chicken fried steak? Jet lag makes you do things that you normally wouldn't do, such as getting up at 3AM on a Saturday & shopping at Safeway after 5AM. Since we were wide awake & hungry, we were searching for a breakfast place open. Everywhere including our nearby favorite, Nini's were closed. Christie's was surprisingly open at 6AM. We walked in and looked at their menu to get to go. I ordered a chicken sausage, bell pepper and avocado with eggs over easy. For my potato choice I chose the home fries. He got an omelet and chose the hashbrowns. The egg yolk remained oozy when punctured on the drive home. Taste wise everything was fine though I added some salt and ketchup to the potatoes. Maybe I'm just used to the home fries at Nini's but the potatoes here were huge cuts and I would prefer them being finer diced. He thought his omelet was solid, and he went with the hashbrowns which I enjoyed more. The sole waitress working that morning was friendly and it seems like Christie's has a loyal longtime local following. I prefer some other breakfast spots, but I could have just ordered the wrong potatoes. The ambiance is your old school typical diner feel, I prefer the seating all the way in the back, clean and not as crowded. The wait was minimal, a few seats out front and a good amount of seating inside. The menu - a good assortment of your typical breakfast options - crepes, pancakes, burgers, and a fair selection of vegi options. Went here right before my flight to NYC for a hearty breakfast - an old school, diner-type breakfast joint with a friendly staff that are all family I believe. Our server, Frieda, was very friendly and made us feel right at home. Although the fresh-squeezed orange juice was tart, she allowed us to sample it before ordering. Additionally, she was a great conversationalist, and even gave us a few recommendations on some Lebanese and Arabic restaurants on the peninsula/South Bay! The food was beautifully presented and definitely satisfied our craving for all-American breakfast food. I ordered the California Egg Benedict, which I thought was delicious and not too heavy. My dad also ordered a different kind of Benedict, but we both believed it could've been a bit more flavorful, but perhaps it means it was a bit healthier?? All in all, these were some solid dishes. A little pricey at $13/plate, but I guess that's to be expected now for that type of breakfast item. Parking was also fairly easy as there were several spots right in front of the place. Finally got to try this place after passing it for years. The food portions here are quite large. The food is good and service is very helpful. Hash browns you can tell are cut fresh because they still have that lather to them when biting into them you can still taste it, the eggs overeasy are ok, the chicken fried steak was regular portion size not to big not to small. The wife had breakfast burrito which was exceptionally good and was more on the food challenge size that she could not finish it. In the burrito was mushrooms, chorizo bits, scrambled eggs, avacado and sauteed onions everything meshed well, she also had hash browns. Our waitress caught me taking pictures of the menu and the food and asked if I was starting my own restuarant if so she was going to take me out and beat me down, stated no I am just a yelper haha.. I think Tanya was her name later during the end of the meal she introduced to me Linda another waitress I think and stated I am going to give them a bad review for service and food haha. Christie's has that old school diner ambiance without the gaudy nature that a franchise like Mel's has. It does get pretty packed on weekends, so be prepared to wait and possibly squeeze into a smaller table if you have a medium/large group. Our table of 5 fit comfortably into a table meant for 4, but the next table over did one better - 9 around a table for 6. Food-wise, it's homestyle. Think big portions without the pretty factor. Take for example, my eggs benedict with a side of homefries....instead of having two cuts of ham, it was just one giant slice lying over two muffins holding up two poached eggs. The homefries also looked overdone...blackened, even. I'll admit, the lack of color did affect how appetizing the meal looked at first. But looks can be deceiving. My benedict was pretty good. The ham was juicy and tender, not too salty. The hollandaise was exceptional - it had a little zing to it too. The potatoes, though dark, had good flavor and also featured a good ratio of soft to crispy pieces. The only fault were my poached eggs...one was overdone - yolk wasn't runny at all...the other was slightly underdone featuring an albumin wigglefest! But at least the latter had the runny yolk. My only other pet peeve was about the shakes/malt...I didn't get one, but for my friends that did put out the $5 for the drink, there is a certain charm about getting glass soda shop cup accompanied with a steel cup of "extra" shake. One of my favorite things to do in this world is to go out for breakfast/brunch and because I do so so often, my breakfast standards are pretty high. Christie's serves a solid breakfast but unfortunately, there was nothing special that makes me really want to come back to try more. Ambience is cool. Has an old classic diner feel. There's counter seating. Seems like a nice neighborhood joint. Saw some locals bump into each other here. Thankfully, my fiance and I hit up the place at 9AM, right before the Saturday morning rush, so there was no wait. We were quickly seated. I was dilly-dallying on the ordering and our waitress came up to us twice in a short span of time and brusquely asked us for our order. I did appreciate how efficient she was trying to be but also felt a little rushed and like I was testing her patience. Coffee was comparable to IHOP coffee. Pretty terrible but hey, it's caffeine! Pluses for breakfast are the serving sizes are fairly large. I was really full after just finishing one chocolate pancake although admittedly, I don't have my full appetite back after a horrible case of food poisoning last week. Fiance got the Louisiana skillet. The scallions felt out of the place in that dish but they didn't skimp on the avocado and there was a very generous serving of potatoes. Sooo many potatoes, and not enough of everything else. Since it was busy the waitress was MIA for our whole meal besides the check and we didn't get any coffee refills. Eh. This place is an okay choice for breakfast if you have a big appetite but if you come anytime after 9:30 AM on the weekend, be prepared to wait for it. Definitely not worth a long wait IMO. It can be a little cramped in here as the seats are pretty close together and there's no real aisle way- you have to weave through the tables, chairs and people. A little uncomfortable.
