I have been here twice now and always let down. My lattes are always 90% milk and 10% coffee. And on top of that- it's overly sweet. I'm not sure the baristas know what they're doing back there. The staff, the couple times I've been, have been normal. No smiles to greet when I order, no nothing. Just "what can I get you". I'm not sure why? I don't think I would be back honestly. Get the vanilla oaty!! Omg it's so delicious. It's simple yet one of the best vanilla lattes I've had. The vanilla is rich, the drink is overall balanced and isn't too sweet, and it's topped with Hawaiian black salt. Not sure what the black salt does, maybe it gives the flavor more depth, but whatever it is, the drink is increeeeeedible! Dairy-free with oat milk too. read more

I am sitting on the patio outside of Civil Coffee, eating the bacon and cheese breakfast burrito that I just purchased. While the breakfast burrito is very tasty, the service was so contemptuous that I have to give this establishment a one star review, something that I very rarely do. I purchased a bacon and egg breakfast burrito, an orange juice, and a vanilla matcha latte. The total for this order was $31.75. Here are the three issues of rudeness that I can't abide: - The person behind the counter scowled the entire time that he was taking my order. - The orange juice was served pre-poured, and it wasn't filled. I asked if they could please fill it to the top. They said no. Flat out, no. I was so shocked that I had no words. I've never seen a restaurant refuse to fill a drink to the top before and say that to my face. - I ordered the breakfast plated for here because we were sitting on the patio to eat. They refused. The person taking my order simply said that they were not plating right now. I have never before had a restaurant refuse to plate an order and only serve to go. When I asked why they would not plate, he said: "We're really busy right now." Is this a restaurant or not? Are you in business or not? I just paid $31.75 to have a nice meal on your patio. As delicious as the breakfast burrito was, I just can't come back here. That was way too rude. There are 1 million coffee houses and 1 million breakfast burritos in the Studio City and Sherman Oaks area. This is a pretty cool coffee shop. It's located in studio city in a pretty popular shopping center. We got the Vanilla Oaty and the Matcha. The matcha was nice and subtle, not too sweet. The vanilla oaty was interesting, it had a bit of a salty flavor and it wasn't too sweet either. I'm into sweeter coffee so this was interesting to me. The service is good, the employees are sweet but there was a bit of a wait. It was a busy Saturday afternoon so I'll give them that. Brandon helped us out and he was very sweet. We also got the Blt and it was delicious. It had thick cut bacon and some kind of chipotle sauce on sourdough bread. The ambiance of the outdoor seating area is nice. Now the service is the primary reason for my review. I was asked what are you having? And anything else. With no eye contact and a Very unwelcoming vibe. Management. I think it's great that you allow pets inside the shop but honestly a customer ahead of me held her lap dog so close to the counter where orders ate placed once complete. We waited for a little less than 5 minutes to order and got our coffee kind of fast even though it was a busy Saturday morn. When arriving, the coffee shop is located in The Shops at The Sportsmen's Lodge. Parking is a small lot located behind the shops when you come off of cold water canyon rd. and Ventura. The parking is free for the first 90 minutes and then after that $6 for every 30 additional minutes. The coffee shop is very small but it gives off a very modern feel, very welcoming. The only things we did not like was the inside being so small, it was hard to tell which way the line went and who was in line versus who was waiting for their order. They had a good selection of baked goods as well as a menu of breakfast foods like burritos, tacos, and chilaquiles. We ordered the Iced Vanilla Latte and the Chocolate Chip Cookie. Our order came out very quick! The cookie was okay, it was softer than we were expecting and lacked a little bit of flavor, but it was an average cookie. The Vanilla Latte was amazing! We loved the vanilla syrup they used, as well as how creamy the coffee was! The only negative thing about the coffee is the amount of ice they use. They were large cubes so it took up majority of the cup and I felt like there were only like 10 sips of coffee. Seating is limited inside of the cafe, but they do have outdoor seating to the left of the cafe. There is additional seating to the right side of the cafe, where other restaurants and businesses are located. Overall, this is definitely a nice cafe. It does get busy in the area on the weekends. Went a couple months ago. Service lacks common and basic customer service skills. Cashier was either just unfriendly to us for idk what reason, or is just a miserable person working at a coffee shop. The world may never know.... Coffee was probably 3 or 2.5 out of 5. The location is great though. Parking is also okay. Really really loved my first visit here. Staff were wonderful, they were so nice and helpful. First off, their assortment of pastries and croissants were so hard to turn away from, every single one looked delicious and that's rare for me to say. I will 100% be back to start trying them one by one because I need to watch the calorie intake lol. I ordered an iced matcha latte with a hint of lavender as well as their avocado toast. The Matcha latte was great quality. I appreciate the fact that they get ceremonial Matcha and I found out afterwards. They also offer Hojicha on the menu which is so rare to find and I will definitely be trying that the next time around. The avocado toast was one of the best i've ever had the bread was delicious, all the toppings mix so well together - the lebni with the avocado, the mint, and the sweetness from the peas. I loved all of it and devoured it within a minute. It was also a really great portion and the perfect dish for breakfast or lunch. Genuinely happy I finally tried this place. I was disappointed that their iced matcha latte was super light on the matcha and tasted basically like a cup of milk - so I worked up the courage to ask the barista could they please strengthen the matcha flavor a bit. And the answer is, "yes but you have to get back in line and pay $1.25 first." So then I did just that, waited in line and paid because I'd rather it be correct than be unhappy with a cup of milk. read more

I have been wanting to try it for a while and ordered a regular iced latte along with some pastries from Too Good To Go. The open environment enclosed in sections of glass is very inviting and natural, but there are also many flies and bugs nearby, which is a tradeoff. There are tables outside and areas to sit / lounge around at "inside" in the lightly covered main area. The iced latte was on the darker side, though only a hint of bitter. The pastries were all on the super sweet side, not inedible but a common flavor of bear. Great location in the sportsman lodge! However from when I walked in the vibe was off. I asked the guy when I was ordering if the matcha was pre sweetened he said no which is great love that! Then I asked for an iced matcha latte w regular milk and to add extra matcha (I read other reviews on yelp all saying the same thing about the matcha being very milked down and not good and to ask for extra matcha). When I asked a woman working butted in and said it comes with 4grams of matcha how much do you want and I just said I saw online that the matcha is milked down and it didn't look the best in pictures and she rudely said let me see the pictures. Then added that they changed the recipe to 4grams of matcha. So I said ok you know what you're doing and what I like I guess so just do it how you do it (I was so uncomfortable). They were not busy by any means it was a Friday at 12:30 4 people working. Only 1 girl was making the drinks from what I saw and the others were just standing talking. Which valid it's slow but they did still have a few people waiting where they could have had more urgency. Seeing how clumpy this matcha is and what a terrible green color (the picture makes it look darker it's even lighter) I would not come back for the matcha or for the rude woman working. We all have personal preferences which I say a lot in all my reviews. My boyfriend liked the matcha so I gave it to him but he said he only tasted milk as well but he's a big fan of milk so at least it didn't go to complete waste! Perfectly placed at the Shops at Sportsmen Lodge, I like the vibe and people watching here. It's a busy shop and parking around lunch can be rough, but there are so many fun things at the Shops. Civil Coffee is just the caffeination you need to keep chugging along through your day. Bonus, they have a rewards program, yay! I went at peak time during Saturday lunch and was met with a line out the door. It moves pretty quickly but we didn't have a menu to look at until we were at the register. They have 4 menus for people to look at that you can grab when you walk in, but they were all behind a long line of people at the register. Maybe just something for the cashiers to keep an eye on, because if people have the menu sooner, the ordering process will go much faster, and keep that long line going. Incredibly minor infraction aside, I enjoyed what i had from Civil Coffee. Their Jasmine Green was a tad too floral for me, but the Black Tea was perfect. They did perfect latte on our matcha flat white and perfect taste to match. If you all do not get the 1000 Layered Potato for just $8, you're doing life wrong. It's so thinly cut and layered, then cut into cubes. Really interesting approach and I loved it. I didn't love the sauce it came with but ketchup works, lol. And if you wanna impress the world on ig, get their Signature Avocado Toast for $12. Peas on avo toast may seem discombobulating, but it's so darn pretty! Their house sourdough is legit and all the toppings don't just look pretty, they taste real good, too. They're killing it with the added floral touch. The Chocolate Chip Cookie had a huge chunk of chocolate and hit the spot with it's brown butter base. My friend had the Oatmeal Cranberry Cookie and reported equally pleasing results. Was at the new Shops at Sportsmen Lodge, which you must check out, and needed a coffee. We ordered two drinks: The Figueroa: espresso, sweetened condensed milk, cinnamon, milk & a Maria cookie :) Honey Hojicha Flat White: organic roasted matcha, oat milk, honey & dash of cinnamon :) Both were excellent!! Equally rich & creamy and I loved the cookie on mine. This is a busy shop with lines at both ends, order & pickup, but they move quickly while putting out quality drinks with a friendly attitude. The sleek modern design gives a welcoming but efficient vibe in the small space but there is plenty of seating outside and throughout the peaceful tree filled center. I come to sportsmen's lodge for the coffee alone. I cannot say anything bad about their iced coffee selection esp vanilla oaty and they have really good matcha. The customer service is unmatched and I love their seating arrangement outside especially when they open the big window. It's a coffee shop plus cafe vibe. They use purple potatoes and it's accompanied with a side of hot sauce, definitely recommend. The only downsides are that it did take a while to get the food, additionally, there is only outdoor seating which is pretty limited if you want to sit outside of civil coffee specifically. TooGoodToGo is affording me the luxury of trying out new eateries and an assortment of sweet treats and great tasting food. Today I received two surprise bags (that's what they are called because you never know what's going to be in the bag just until you get there.) They were filled with muffins and cakes and pasties and one awesome looking chocolate chip cookie. I have eight people in my house so I am always appreciative when they show me love and give me more than 3-4 pastries, trust me when I say nothing is going to waste in my house and especially during the holidays! This was my first time coming to this hidden gem. Its's actually like a little strip mall behind a wall. Plenty of parking, but you have to pay for it and the good news is the first hour of parking is free. The staff was friendly, they were closing up shop and all smiles. I waited patiently for them to serve the other customers and it paid off, as I was the last TooGoodToGo customer for the day, he offered me the extra bag, so cool! I have to come back to this one! Had such a bad experience this past week at Civil coffee. I took my friend for a coffee and I told her it was one of the best lattes I've ever had. We ordered and her iced latte didn't really taste good and had wayyy to much milk I asked the girl if she could remake it since my friend didn't like it she said No in her own words she said "it tastes like milk because it has regular milk" I was like oh okay but it was almost white of how much milk the latte had. Then I told her what can I do it doesn't taste like coffee much and she's like why did your friend order regular milk then? She was extremely rude it made me feel like never going back. Civil Coffee is located in the plaza right next to Sportsmen Lodge. This is a coffee shop to go to if you want both breakfast and coffee rather than just breakfast. I know it is tough finding good breakfast aside from pastries if you are looking for coffee in this area. The Beef Chorizo Burrito was okay. I felt as if they skimped out on the meat for the burrito. The stuffing in the burrito definitely gave it the weight. The Breakfast Sammi has kicked this coffee shop up my top 5 coffee shops with breakfast. Egg was fluffy, beef patty was juicy (A little spicy for those sensitive to spice), and the brioche was soft to the touch. Many of their bread comes from Bub's and Grandma which is an amazing place in Glassell Park who provides amazing fresh baked bread. Note: Place can get pretty packed after 9AM on a weekend. I was in line to order a latte and Bill Burr decided he wanted to come up and mess with me while I was in line. Speaking of the line, it was quite long, took about 15 minutes to get through it. There's plenty of seating spots outside, lots of people, very lively, also lots of other establishments in the near vicinity to have lunch or do other things, etc. My gripe about the coffee is that it was way way way too sweet. Initially I ordered the latte with vanilla and when I got it, it was almost pure white like a milkshake. I asked them to remake it, which they gladly did, but it still was way too milky. I like a little milk with my coffee, not vice versa. In the end, the actual quality of the coffee was masked by the excess milk. I ordered flat whites (typically less milk than a cappuccino) and this woman made lattes, argued with me about what it was and then REFUSED to remake it saying "this is how WE make it". After calling me rude, she at least refunded the drinks. But Andrea needs a new job because she's clearly not serving Civil Coffee - it's Hostile coffee when she's on the clock. read more
