Absolutely delicious, a stellar experience all and all. Friday night no reservation, we were seated at the chef's counter. It was a lovely experience sitting in front of the wood-fire oven and watching the chefs skillfully work. Although the restaurant was filled with chatter it wasn't loud or overbearing. Starting off they offered complimentary sweet rolls with butter. As a tourist here in NOLA I was accustomed to the bread, but the rolls looked tantalizing and the taste matched. A great start to the night. Quickly after, we were offered an amusé bouche: A pecan-crusted hush puppy topped with crawfish. They were delicious, the crunch and the taste of the pecans complimenting the crawfish. Getting into our actual order, we started off with the Wood Fired Oysters. They were absolutely delicious. Melt in your mouth goodness with the perfect amount of acidity to bring it all together. It was so delicious we had to order another platter. The size of the oysters does vary with our second platter holding much larger oysters overall. The fried alligator was also great! It really does taste like chicken like they all say. I was not too big of a fan, but my boyfriend adored the sauce which we likened to a spicy mayo. Entrees came soon after, the Rabbit and Dumplings were tasty. The carrots (of which I'm not typically a fan) were cooked perfectly. While slightly over-salted the rabbit was tender and the dish was well put together. The Louisiana Cochon (the Pork Neck) looked just as mouthwatering as it tasted. Tender and seared well, it left a lasting impression, although perhaps a bit too fatty for my liking. The Thomas Henry Mystic Mango Soda was refreshing. I was expecting it to be too sweet for my palate but it was proven wrong yet again. The pineapple cake was a winner in its own right as well. The brown butter crust warms the soul and the lemon-coconut sorbet paired nicely. Overall this place completely blew me out of the park. My single complaint is that I wish that had refilled my water If I come to NOLA again this is a must visit for me! One of NOLA's best lunch spots! It's the perfect walk from Burbon St. and we tend to go every time we're there. They do reservations so we never wait, and the staff is so quick and responsive. Wood Fired Oysters w Chili Garlic Butter If you're an oyster fan, you NEED to get their Wood Fired Oysters. They melt in your mouth and my mom literally eats the rest of the sauce with her bread. Louisiana Cochon Another must-try here. The pork is so tender and juicy. Last time mine came with pickled peaches and a bed of green beans, but this time it was fried pork skin and a bed of cabbage. The wood fired oysters were amazing - the acidity and spiciness came through. Be sure to use the bread to soak up the best parts! The gumbo was deep, rich, and filling. Another New Orleans staple on what food you want to remember! The smoked and braised meat was great - soft and chewy. The egg salad with the sauce was a spectacular combo! The pineapple upside down cake was a great way to end the night with all the texture differences and sweet flavor profiles. I also ate the rabbit and dumplings stew - there was bones so I had to take them out but it was the heaviest dish by far. Cochon was one of the highlights of our trip to New Orleans. The food was absolutely worth the visit, and everything we ordered was delicious. We had the burger and the ribs, and both were outstanding. The burger was juicy, flavorful, and cooked perfectly, while the ribs were incredibly tender and packed with cajun flavor. You can definitely tell they take pride in the quality of their food. The customer service was also excellent. Everyone was friendly, attentive, and made us feel welcome without being overbearing. The atmosphere has a great New Orleans vibe--casual, lively, and perfect for enjoying a great meal. Good but not great. The food is excellent and what it claims to be: contemporary fare inspired by Cajun foodways, especially butchering and meat preparation. The atmosphere is appropriate: modern but still a bit folksy, allusions to the South and Louisiana without being too coy or cute. It's comfortable more than anything and compared to neighboring Cochon Butcher it is not bustling and noisy but has the feel of an upscale place for lunch. The food and the atmosphere meet the pretense of the restaurant and leave you feeling you're in good hands. Alas, you're not exactly in good hands. My food--gumbo, okra and tomatoes, and their excellent peanut butter ice box dessert--were all very good. The service was not. It was slow, plodding, and performed between two waiters neither of whom acted as if they were MY waiter but someone who randomly happened by and was doing me a big favor to do most anything at all. They didn't even mention dessert, I had to ask (way to lose a potential sale there, guys) and when I asked for iced tea with my dessert, my dessert arrived long before the tea. Just very unprofessional, uncaring, service. That said, the peanut butter ice box dessert which is like a large ice cream bar in chocolate more than a pie is utterly excellent. The gumbo was good, same with the okra and tomatoes. The rolls served with the meal were mundane, unremarkable. I believe it's a restaurant well worth trying but I do hope service is normally better, however. read more

In preparing for this trip a couple of weeks in advance I made a reservation for this restaurant given the strong reviews. When we arrived we were promptly seated and our friendly and knowledgeable waitress was there to help. I started with my second choice for beer since they were out of the first pick. We began with the shrimp stew which was excellent. The sauce was heavenly as were the dinner rolls. I ordered the redfish which was perfectly prepared. Moist and tender with just the perfect seasoning. We split the Brussel stout special. Very good especially with the bacon. Why can't we make these this good at home? My wife got the chicken and sausage gumbo which was good but we had better earlier this week. We finished with the Banana Pudding which was good though a bit pricey. My Michelin number 2 and had to give this a 5. Our waiter was fantastic and the food was top of line. We started our meal with a Champagne toast for our 10 year anniversary. Accompanied by butter. I started off my cocktail selection by choosing the first rodeo and it was tasty and spirit forward. He started our meal off with the fried alligator along with the chicken liver. I would say the chicken liver was my favorite of the night given the fried texture on the outside, and that signature liver taste of the inside. For our main course we did the smoked brisket accompanied by bacon, enhanced collard greens, and their macaroni and cheese casserole. We also did the rabbit and dumplings which the rabbit meat was sued by the Cajun signature to seasoning and topped with a croquette. We ended our dinner with a focaccia bread pudding topped with the macerated blueberries. Overall, I can see why this was given. It's Michelin stars. Can't wait to go back in the future. read more

This is our first time visiting New Orleans, and we saw that they were some Michelin star restaurants here. We definitely had to try them! We made an early reservation here about two months in advance. Very walkable distance from our hotel. Very nice atmosphere, semi rustic, but classy at the same time we started with the fried alligator and the fried chicken livers. The fried alligator was great and did not taste like any other other fried alligator we had here the breading was better and the sauce was very delicious. The fried chicken livers was incredible because the breading looked exactly like a fried chicken wood! It was very good and a very approachable way to have chicken livers. For our main dish, we try the rabbit and dumplings, which was good. I would say it was a little bit salty but flavorful. The next dish we tried was the smoked brisket with egg salad. The smoked flavor on the brisket was definitely good as well as the egg salad. Finally for sides we tried the greens and the mac & cheese. The mac & cheese was definitely not what I was expecting in a very good way. All in all I can see why this place deserves a Michelin star and would deathly return back. This was the best meal I've had in some time and the best I had in a week of being in New Orleans. It's loud, but it's so lively and the people watching is top tier. I would go with a reservation even if just an hour before arrival, as this is a busy place--but it will work itself out. The corn was a big highlight, so simple--like couldn't be more simple, but it was the freshest, most crisp and though hot, refreshing thing. Other highlights, were the wood fired fish and the bacon braised greens. Wow! Three of us with drinks was about $300 w/ tax and tip and well worth it, as you'll spend 100 per person easy at less wonderful and way less quality places in the area. My wife and I ate here for our anniversary. It was amazing. We had the fried boudin for an appetizer which was cooked perfectly. My wife had the brisket which was so tender and seasoned perfectly. I had the grilled red fish. It was definitely one of the best I have had. For desert she had the pineapple upside down cake and I had the banana pudding. Both were delicious. For drinks I had a bourbon flight by Rabbit Hole. Soooo good, and it came with a description of each (see photo). My wife had an Old Fashioned which was mixed just right. The staff was very attentive and gave us a complimentary glass of champagne for the celebration. The waiter also knew his bourbon well. Finally the restaurant was casual but classy. It is in the warehouse district of New Orleans which is being refurbished and renewed all the time. The restaurant has been open for about 15 years and I hope for many more. We were checked on multiple times by multiple people during our meal by super friendly faces and knowledgeable staff. The menu offers interesting food concepts, but I feel it was quite overpriced for what it is, and execution is somewhat lacking. It might have just been what I ordered, and I would be willing to try other things on the menu if I had the opportunity, but I wound not order what I got originally again. House Cured Boucherie -- 3.5/5 * The meat was very tender and the greens were good, however the dish was a little too acidic overall. Very small portion of meat and a little salty. Oyster & Bacon Sandwich -- 3/5 * It was little dry and bready between all the fried oysters, two slices of toast, and cabbage. Was kind of mouthful and kind of scraped my mouth up. Cons: The server ruined the vibe! The gumbo was forgettable. Our server was snarky and had a bit of an attitude. I don't understand why she seemed rude and put out by asking her a question about the menu. I asked if I could order a grilled cheese to go with the gumbo. A local patron recommend it to me. Her facial expression and demeanor implied that I was an idiot for asking if that was something that could be done. Based on her response I decided not to order it but her whole attitude left me with a negative feeling. Cochon delivers a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere the moment you walk in is like everyone inside has already been hit by the food coma bus (in the best way). The vibe feels comfortable and confident. Service is top notch. The staff knows the menu well, gives thoughtful recommendations, and doesn't try to upsell you they genuinely want you to have the best experience. I also appreciated the dual-server setup. You have your main server and a backup, so you're never waiting long for a refill or anything you need. Now for the food: The fried gator is one dish that could use a small adjustment. It was tossed in sauce when it would've been better served with the sauce on the side. The sauce stole the crunch and softened the crisp, the gator itself leaned slightly on the chewy side. A little tweak there would elevate it. The greens were good, though slightly on the sweet side for my preference. The boudin balls? No complaints , solid and flavorful. The rabbit and dumplings ‍ although in my serving I wish I had more vegetables and protein (I'll chalk it up to myself arriving two hours before closing) absolutely did not disappoint. Rich, comforting, and executed beautifully. That dish alone makes the visit worth it. And the soda with bitters and lime juice OMG. One of the best I've had. You know I love a good soda-bitters-lime combo, and this one was perfectly balanced. The house bread and butter also hit the spot simple, warm, and exactly what it needed to be. Portion sizes are exactly as described on the menu. If you're hungry, don't plan on sharing. If you're not overly hungry, one small plate, a side, and an entrée could comfortably feed two. Overall: Cochon gets a lot right. A couple small tweaks aside, the experience, service, and standout dishes make it a place I'd return to. read more
