I placed an order online. When I arrive they tell me they don't have my item in stock. (Which first of all why didn't they call me so I didn't waste my time?????) so then I request a refund. And the Manager Ana says ok and gives me a receipt saying they refunded me. It was a Sunday so I know it could take a few days to get the refund.... TWO WEEKS go by and I haven't gotten my refund. I go back and they said that they can't do anything and to come back tomorrow to talk to the store manager. I work til 7 Mon-Fri and Ana can't even guarantee that the store manager will even be in the office that late. So they basically just stole my money and I can't do anything about it. I assumed this place would be decent as I usually enjoy these fast casual Mexican places, but unfortunately everything was exceptionally bland. I ordered a burrito bowl with rice, beans, pico, chicken and lettuce. Doesn't sound all that exciting but at other places (ahem... Chipotle... ) the meats and salsas are so flavorful that they carry the dish. Well, that was not the case here. Bland on bland on bland, sprinkled with lettuce. Really quite uninspired. I asked for some mango salsa to spruce it up, which I was charged extra for. That was the best part of the dish and the saving grace which resulted in my consumption of the meal. Atmosphere - Vibrant colors and a cool water feature, a wall of water with rotating light colors and bubbles. The little kids that came in were glue to the bubbles. Another place like Qdoba, make your Mexican food as you like and walk the line. Food Drinks - Had a Barq's root beer from the self-service fountain machine. They have some soda in the display case in glass bottles. They also had two beer choices in the case, Bud Light and one bottle of Corona. Neither of those beers called out to me to buy them. Appetizer - none. My Main Course - I went with a burrito. I saw raspberry chicken on the menu board as the protein choice. Raspberry!?! Really, I had to try it. They take their grilled chicken and add a ladle of raspberry liquid goodness. It was worth the try and extra cost compared to the require grilled chicken. Now it will be my only choice to get. A little sweetness and with the heated burrito, perfection! Dessert - none. Service - I had to watch them make their tortillas as I was also trying to figure out what I wanted to eat. Yeah I get distracted easily. Squirrel!! Oh service yeah that is what I need to focus on here. They had three ladies in the kitchen. One focused on the tortillas, one on the customer order and the other the register. We made it to the register and she gave us a total on the food we ordered, and indicated we wanted a drink. Serendipitous moment driving by and seeing that it might be open. Turned out to be a soft opening for "Friends and Family", but the employee at the door welcomed us in with a smile and a to-go menu. The first thing I noticed was the cool color changing water wall that separates the food line from the dining area. Lots of summery colors that give the place a beachy feeling. We followed where the other employees directed us in the line to custom order our food. They educated us on how they daily make from scratch their flour and honey-wheat tortillas, which can be used for salad bowls, burrito and enchilada wraps, or for quesadillas. Then, they informed us on their choice of meats: chicken, steak, or shredded pork, and asked us if we wanted to sample anything. Everything is made fresh, nothing frozen and then reheated. Hubby decided to try the enchiladas, with various sauces and different meats. I opted for the mango salad with grilled chicken, with a side of their very sweet mango dressing and their very yummy cilantro lime dressing. The salad was a great portion of greens, rice, and black beans, mixed with chicken and mango salsa, and topped with crunchy tortilla strips. I was still full from today's breakfast, so I shared the salad with my hubby. One of the owner's spent a great deal of time in conversation with us, and I just hope he enjoyed it as much as we did. I learned that they do try to meet the needs of their gluten-free clients by requesting that those clients identify themselves at the beginning of the line, upon which the protocol is for the employee to change their gloves and stick with that customer through each part of putting his/her food together until the very end. Typically, a plate will be passed along to another employee as parts of the entree are assembled. While some customers may request gluten free as a preference, we do have friends who are actually gluten intolerant, and it is nice to see more venues respond positively to meeting their very sensitive dietary needs. Upon the owner's suggestion, we decided to try the tres leches dessert. OMG, it was amazing! Again, made from scratch, in a serving enough to share with two forks, with the right texture and perfect flavor, topped with whipped cream. It was supposed to come with fresh strawberries, which I'm sure will be a perfect touch, but was not needed to make the dessert any better. The entrance foyer is a generous size, accessorized by a glass surrounding fireplace that can be viewed in and outside the restaurant. There's also a separate entrance for those picking up to-go orders that were placed by phone or online. Other notable marks of decoration include a 'wave wall' along the ceiling, surfboard lights, and bright orange colander lights in their covered patio (with windows that can be opened during the warmer weather). Initially, I wasn't excited about another Fresh-Mex grill coming to the area. But after today's experience, I hope they find great success, and I will do my best to help get the word out. And there was a dessert we missed...the key lime pie...and you can bet I'll be back after Wednesday, March 26th's grand opening to give that a try! read more

First I want to get the positives in since I feel bad about leaving such a low score. I never went into the previous restaurant so I'm not sure how much they renovated, but the interior is lovely, spacious and beachy. There is a large glass/water feature and a fireplace. There is simulated outdoor patio seating that is inclosed in glass (it was affectionatly referred to as the "quiet room" by the older couples seeking refuge from the many kids dining the night I went). Staff is abundant, energetic, and eager. They do offer many options, more so than other similar places. Despite all these great qualities, it comes down to the food and value for me. This is another place that sells inflated portions for inflated prices. Aside from the lack of value, I felt the flavors were geared very much towards a fast food palate with overly sweet sauces, no real distinct spices, and heavily salted. The rice was the parboiled shelf stable type you can buy in microwave pouches. Their hottest sauce was the red enchildada sauce, which was mild enough that my 1 yr old could eat it. (correction, the raspberry sauce was spicier, but also very sugary and jammy, I was seeking a salsa type sauce) I tried to order him a quesadilla ala carte but was charged for a meal deal and given a very strange and wet taco. The sweet pork was very very sweet and saturated in a bbq type sauce. Aside from salty or sugary there were no real flavor profiles in my burrito. Bottom line is I won't be returning. read more

I really like this place and hope they make it in what is becoming a dying strip mall. One of the few places in Reno to offer decent nachos and their burritos have a unique taste. Costa Vida is definitely not the first place of its kind in the area...first I remember Qdoba being the place to be...then Baja Fresh...then it was Chipotle...And for me it still is. While Costa Vida definitely has its own perks, like homemade tortillas and burritos that don't rip while folding, to me nothing compares to the non-Gmo, grass fed, free range deal going on at the other place. So visiting somewhere new, and not staying loyal to my fav was tough when a girlfriend of mine asked me to try Costa Vida, a place she had just tried and loved. As I mentioned above, the tortillas are made in house which really peaked my interest upon ordering. I couldn't see that and not get a burrito! A shredded sweet pork is what caught my eye. The burrito came with sour cream, guacamole and a little lettuce tomato mixture on the side too. The flavor was surprising! I was introduced to Costa Vida by a friend shortly after they opened. He brought me there for the care they give to Gluten-free orders. They know me well now and are changing their gloves before they even take my order. What I like most about the Gluten-Free items is the variety. Where my office is located, for a little while the closest quick mexican food you could buy was Baja Fresh which I do enjoy but it started to get a little old. Now we have Chipotle (meh) and Costa Vida (yay!). I have to say I love this place, one thing I've noticed is that the staff, and especially the manager is very professional and eager to make sure you enjoy your experience here. I have to say that for me, the sweet pork salad is TO DIE FOR. Its delicious. Actually I'm pretty sure everything I've ordered that sweet pork in has been tasty as hell. The dressings you can get on the salads are really good as well - especially the tomatillo ranch. Prices are very reasonable and they have plenty of seating. I would eat here again if I came to this mall. The ingredients were generally good. My burrito was bland, though. They seemed to acknowledge the food doesn't have a lot of spice by pointing to the hot sauces available on a counter after you pay. The problem with that for burritos is that you have to unwrap the burrito to put it on. It seems their hottest salsa is also sweetened. I ordered a sweet pork burrito because I'd never had sweet pork before and then it seems I got a sweet salsa on top of that. It was too much sweet overall. I had recently worked for Susan who had said that I could buy non slip shoes when I had received my first check and the following week I had another manager tell me to get off the floor due to not having the right kind of shoes,so I left and had sent Susan a text letting her know what was going on with no response from her so I tried calling the restaurant and got hung up on so I went to the restaurant and Susan wouldn't respond to me and had other employees talk to me and tell me that she would be in touch which she wasn't, again I went down there and Susan hid in the back of the office avoiding me once again,I asked for my check which I did not have one since Susan refused to fill out the paperwork but took pictures on her phone of my social security card and driver's license...so I contacted HR and let them know what was going on, once again I went back to the restaurant which Susan had to file papers thanks to HR. Susan kept saying she would be in touch when my check arrived and once again failed to do so.i decided to go back to get my check which Susan was not there but had the DM find my check... When Susan had received my check she threw it on the floor and stomped on the envelope leaving shoe prints on my check.... Not busy on Tuesday night at 7:15 pm. Had the Tuesday special: Two sweet pork enchiladas with beans and rice and a soda for $6.99. Great price with a good portion of food. You order at the counter and they prepare the food in front of you. It's fast so if you are looking for a quick place to grab a bite of fresh food, this is for you. For my enchiladas I had corn tortillas, and sweet pork with red sauce. Love the fresh tortillas. The pork was very sweet but the bitter red sauce saved it. The combination balanced out nicely. The pork was moist and tender. The refried beans had a nice smoky taste. My only real complaint is that the staff don't seem to care much about working here. For perspective I prefer Baja Fresh for their flavors in fast casual and Rositas in S Reno for authentic sit down Mexican. If your food sings I don't care what you serve it in or on, I'll eat it out of my hat if I have to. If you won't eat here simply because it's cafeteria style then you and I have very different requirements. That said I found the flavors a little wanting. I had 2 enchiladas, one green chile and one red. The red sauce begs for some flavor, and the green chile was very sweet. It's too bad since the tortilla (corn) and fillings were good and ample. The refried beans were actually the best thing of note and did lean a little salty, but they counter the sweet from the green chile nicely. Lastly, if you're in this genre and not making a variety of salsa, I think you'll struggle. There are a couple to choose during your food build, but they should be offering at least samples of all since there is no salsa bar. Once it's time to eat it's bottled options only. read more

I was craving Mexican food and while driving, I passed by this location. I was really hungry so I said "Heck, i'll give this a try." Upon entering, I liked the decor inside and the cool waterfall stood out. The menu was easy to understand because it lets you choose all the options that goes into making a burrito. While waiting in line, I could see the employees making fresh tortillas. I ended up going with the sweet pork burrito and I'm happy I did. After paying, I noticed Horchata as a drink selection which is awesome. After getting my food and drink, I sat down and started digging in. Wow was I impressed. The quality of the ingredients were excellent. Very fresh and tasty. This was not a burrito you can eat by itself with your hands, you will need a fork and knife. The horchata tasted fresh and delicious. A step above other burrito chains. Overall, the restaurant was very nice and clean. The employees were friendly and the food tasted amazing. So we've been very cautious about going out during this pandemic, but have allowed ourselves to get take-out every couple of weeks and Costa Vida came through for us big time last weekend! The staff was amazing during pickup - going over the entire order to be sure everything was correct, getting me drink holders and a big reusable bag to carry everything out to my car in - above and beyond my expectations! The food was amazing as usual - my favorite grilled chicken salad was enough for 2 days, as were my wife and kids' burritos. We found a new favorite also - we've always loved their sweet pork in burritos, but found it outstanding in a quesadilla our daughter ordered. And of course our favorite queso in the world! I went out for some food and though I didn't catch his name, the first person you see when your food is being prepared was extremely rude. I had lost or misplaced my mask, so I didn't wear one inside. They have signs saying that if you're fully vaccinated, you don't need one. The person preparing my food told me to put on a mask. I politely informed him that I did not have one. He rolled his eyes, tilted his head, and glared at me and said "really? In a snarky attitude, as if i were lying. There are so many places for Mexican and quick Mexican food in town, but this place with its fresh, made in front of you, tortillas stole my heart! I went with the steak burrito and it was so delicious... I don't like warmed up steak, but even the leftovers were still so good! The burrito was HUGE so it was actually 3 meals for me :) The boy went with the sweet pork burrito and it was so good too. A little too sweet for me, but he also had leftovers and he said it was actually less sweet later. We also got some chips and queso and it was pretty good as well. This is a great fast fresh west coast type of Mexican eatery. It truly is fresh with all the tortillas cooked in front of you and the veges are tasty. After the gym, my son and I had two goals. He is trying to gain weight and I am trying to lose weight. We decided on Costa Vida cause it could fit both our criterias. All entrees on the menu gave you the minimum verses maximum calories for a meal depending on the toppings you put on your plate. I opted for a small salad with chicken. I topped it with beans and some fresh mango salsa and Pico de Gallo. They offered two types of salad dressings --a heavier type of cream salad dressing and then they had a light cilantro lime vinaigrette, which I chose. Really delicious salad, very filling and definitely tasted fresh. I love that you can ask for guacamole and they don't charge you extra! My son got two sweet pork tacos loaded with cheese, rice and beans. This was his version of a healthy way to gain weight, while I was able to choose a lighter meal to satisfy my hunger. This place is slow, and the employees are rude. They "forget" to make pick up orders.

Ate here twice a week for last 3 years. Last Sunday had the worst experience ever. Normally on weekdays place is ran by an amazing middle aged women. On weekends she does not work and it shows. Ordered online to wait 25 minutes then when I ask about my online order that should have been ready 25 minutes I'm told we are busy I have customers. Again 25 minutes still no acknowledgement. We went to Costa Vida last night and I can NOT rave about this place enough! They were super busy and still had fast, fresh food out in no time at all and their customer service NEVER waivered! They all worked together like a well oiled machine, the food was absolutely amazing and the prices were right on point with the quality of food and EXCELLENT customer service we received. Everyone was very Covid compliant and even offered eat in service as well. I think I've already told everyone I've run into today or talked to that they need to go check out Costa Vida if they haven't already! We will for sure be back! We ordered, a double steak burrito, steal enchiladas, and tres leches cake with horchata....the portions they serve made sure we had leftovers today and it was still super delicious! Honestly, even IF they didn't have great food, I'd go back just because of the customer service. I wish I could remember the young ladies name that helped us... She had two braids and blue eyes, she was about to start making my husband's burrito with a fresh tortilla and even though the tortilla she was about to use seemed fine to us, it wasn't up to their standards and she made him a fresh one all the while helping out with other orders, getting people's checks and having a smile on her face the whole time and from what I could see, that's how the ENTIRE staff was.... I'm so thankful when I came here I had a coupon to put towards my family's meal, because if I paid full price and received the experience I did - I'd be SO much more upset. One shouldn't solely judge things based on payment, but I come bearing a wondrous bounty of disappointment. Nearly all the tables were dirty upon arrival, but that wasn't a big deal. We can wipe down our own surface if we have to, which is exactly what we did. Upon ordering, the service was definitely below average. The lady who built our food wasn't that friendly and was snappy in her remarks. This was my parents' first time coming here. A smile and small explanation would have made a huge difference. She spent more time joking around with the young man sweeping behind the counter next to her. He also didn't seem to respect the fact that she was with a customer, because his own words were distracting and commanded attention. The WORST part of this entire experience was the UNSANITARY PRACTICE of making my nachos. The tortilla chips are kept in a bottom bin that pulls out under the oven. The young man was sweeping with much carelessness of his surroundings. The woman crouched to put the chips in the bowl as the sweeping got thicker. She continued to build the food for my parents and I as DUST FROM THE FLOOR was actually getting everywhere! They were even kidding with each other as if he was trying to 'sweep her shoes'. There was no inclination to pause for either of them. That's dirt in our food, dude. This place is in dire need of awareness when it comes to proper sanitation and customer service technique. It's not wrong to have fun on the job, but it's messed up to have your guests feel SICK after eating your food. Which, is what happened to me. I felt nauseated and I couldn't shake the gritty-ness of my soggy nachos. (Oh, yes, because there were problems with the register, they needed to swipe my card multiple times. And due to that lengthier process, my nachos became soggy.) The saving grace of this review from being rated 1 star was because of the older gentlemen who inevitably saved the transaction by getting my card to swipe properly. He was friendly and social in a positive sense. He was changing out the trash in a comfortable distance from those who were eating. After our meal was finished, he even offered kind acknowledgement to us upon our departure. If anything, this guy would be the reason we'd ever come back after this. If it were just me, I wouldn't have been as peeved. I'd be upset, for sure. But, I was with my elderly parents and I wanted them to have a good first experience since I've been here a couple times before. In the past, it was decent enough. Nothing wowing. I arrived 25 minutes later at an empty restaurant (seriously, one person was leaving), gave my name at the counter, the employee looked around and said the order just came in. When I said when I placed the order, it was "oh, umm, it was busy earlier". When the food was finally made, I asked for my tip to be removed from the other. Another employee (there were 7 in the store, and said they were understaffed) told the manager, who said something like "I'll get to him in a bit" and continued to do stock. I loudly said "I would like to speak to the manager who is ignoring me" which at least felt cathartic (remember, there were no other customers in the store), and he went into happy passive-aggressive mode. One issue that many fast food establishments have is people that are there just to earn a paycheck. I can't hold that against the workers. After all, almost everyone of us had to work someplace during high school/college to make some money for pizza and beer. Costa Vida appears to have change the way their workers work! I was greeted when I walked up to the counter to place my order. Despite the fact that one of their menus were malfunctioning and Linux was being displayed instead of various burrito types! Yes, you could say I took a byte out of my taco! HA! I'm too funny. Okay, back to business. I ordered two tacos with grilled chicken. I was asked what type of tortilla I wanted, flour, wheat or corn. I opted for corn. The next station, I was greeted as sir and with a smile. Odd, but very nice. The final station, the cashier, I was greeted with a smile, asked about my beverage, paid and was pleased with the service. I actually was impressed with the service! Doesn't happen that often in a fast food place but the manager their must be doing something and I like it. Environment is good. It still looks nice here. The seats are clean and in good condition. The condiment station was clean and kept nice. Drinks were operational and clean. Everything was fully stocked. The tacos, being the first time I tried them, was surprisingly good! The corn tortillas were fresh and I was pleasantly surprised overall. If you like sweet stuff. I mean really sweet, their raspberry meats are for you. Not my cup of tea. Surprised they 3 stars - This is probably the worst place I've experienced customer service at in Reno. With similar competition in the area, a place like this has to excel in service. I asked for a shrimp bowl with lettuce and was told that I would need to have some of the shrimp (which was already cooking) taken out if I wanted lettuce? The line cook wasn't going to give me a small handful of lettuce even after I said I WOULD PAY FOR IT. Then made me feel uncomfortable with the attitude she gave me because of it. I didn't think the lettuce was reason to make me feel uncomfortable as I had never been to a Costa Vida and didn't understand what came with what. I'd give zero stars if I could. Hubby and I are on the search for good Mexican food in Reno. Growing up in the Southwest, we have been spoiled by having fresh Mexican and New Mexican available at every corner in our hometown. After a couple of hours of braving the crowds at the TJ Maxx and Ross, we decided we needed some food and fast. We still had to venture out to Costco and the grocery store. Across the way from TJs, we saw Costa Vida and as it was something new to us, we decided to try it out. What I would go back for: The freshly made tortillas! That in itself is a true treat in Reno!! Fresh tortillas are so much better than store bought. The mango salsa - it was fresh and sweet and added a nice flavor to my chicken salad. The pinto beans were soft and flavorful The Sweet Pork was interesting, but yummy in a taco The restaurant was clean and had a cool vibe Things that make you go Hmmmmmmmm: The guacamole. If you don't have good fresh guacamole, then you cannot call yourself a Mexican restaurant. (In my opinion of course.) What I saw was the food-prepper mixing good guacamole with pico de gallo to stretch the guac. Yeah...NO! Not a good thing. All I got in my scoop of guac was tomatoes and onions, not much avocado. The chicken was a little dry They gave you a tiny little cup of dressing (I think I like my dressing with a little bit of salad, thank you!) So we'll go back if are in the area, just for the freshness of the tortillas and beans and salsa. And it was fast and it was good enough to get us fueled for Costco. Sometimes it's hard to find somewhere that has fresh and quality ingredients that knows exactly how to use them. Thankfully, Costa Vida is not like that at all. Fresh ingredients put together perfectly and exactly as you ordered it (because you watch them make it). I ordered the small chicken salad and although a salad may be hard to mess up, this one was incredible. They pack as much as they can into your meal so that you get what you pay for. There's not much else to say other than go try it! My favorite of all of the "fresh mex" brand chains. 5/5 service, 5/5 food, 5/5 location. read more
