I've been waiting for this place to open for what feels like forever! Once they did, they were only doing takeout orders for a couple days as a soft opening, so I was left in suspense for a little longer until dine in was offered, and it was really worth all the wait! I bet we can all agree that soup dumplings, or XLB, always tastes better when served fresh. We ordered the pork & dungeness crab XLB, oxtail soup, and short rib dan mein. When the XLB arrived and uncovered, the basket was steaming. But when I ate it, the soup inside was flavorful being both meaty and seafoody, but sadly kind of lukewarm. Perhaps to protect against diner burn complaints? The wrapping itself was also a bit thicker than the gold standard Din Tai Fung, but still nicely delicate. Oxtail soup came in a smaller bowl than expected. I wouldn't recommend it as your only entree, but the broth was rich and nicely complex. My real star was the mein, which had udon, juicy pieces of short rib, and generous mushrooms and yuchoy scattered throughout that were stir fried harmoniously with a delicious dark soy sauce blend. Protip: ask for their housemade chili oil after they take your order, which compliments everything so well. read more

Can't believe this place is averaging over four stars. It is overpriced, small portions and the food is not prepared properly. We ordered the shrimp fried rice, the shrimp and chicken soup dumplings, the beef roll small plate and the Dan chicken noodles. The rice and soup dumplings were ok if not small portioned + overpriced, but the beef roll and ran chicken noodles were way too sweet. If they are overcharging it at least has to be comparable to other similar restaurants. It's possible the dishes are on the candy sweet side to appeal to a western palate read more

Ok here's the deal. I give Dan an Orange County 4, but really, it's an LA 3. If I have to be truly honest, I'd give it a 2. If you don't eat a lot of Asian food, you'll love the soup dumplings (hence the 4). If you are Asian or are familiar with Asian cuisine then you won't be impressed. The service was good, everyone was pleasant. I waited for 20-30min (ordered thru the app). I didn't mind the wait but FYI it might take a little bit longer to get your food. I just got the chicken and shrimp soup dumplings. Tbh, the first time I had soup dumplings I made them myself and they were just...fine (they were gluten free and my crumping technique ruined it). Somehow mine tasted better than these. They're pretty bland and the sauce that comes with it doesn't pair well with them. Also I wish I got more ginger. It seems a waste to put 3 slivers of ginger in a to go cup. Also, I wish I got a to-go spoon. Even for $10, it just seemed pricey. I would definitely come here again but I for the fried rice. I went to Dan modern Chinese and I was pleasantly surprised! Our waiter Eric was the best. He was so sweet and extremely helpful in telling us what to order. He recommended the crispy dumplings, beef roll, Dan mein shortrib noodles, and soup dumplings. We are obsessed with the beef roll and short rib noodles were outstanding! Ordered: Soup dumplings chicken and pork the broth in each soup dumpling was so flavorful it brought tears to my eyes. Was served with a spicy chili sauce and teriyaki sauce mix was hot but soooo good especially paired with the dumplings. Popcorn chicken with a spicy Mayo paired with it was so good!! Perfect for the littles!! The chicken Dan Mein was so delicious perfectly pan fried and seasoning there was even fresh chopped garlic sautéed with broccolini. Chicken was in small cubes which helped getting everything chewed down. Spicy oxtail noodle soup was so smooth even with a kick of spice. The broth was definitely the high light of the dish, short rib was a little over cooked but with the mix of Ramen noodles and baby bok choy and a side of pickles radish or some type of minced pickled veggie to mix in the soup just made it hit different. They don't have any desserts but I'm sure if the did or will have in the mere future the desserts would be amazing too. Prices are great especially the quality of food you get. I was excited that Long Beach was finally getting a xiao long bao restaurant and rushed here once I found out it's opened. I came here on my lunch break during a weekday. It was pretty empty and I was able to easily find parking at the structure for about 90 minutes for free. Inside it was really nice and modern since they just opened. I decided to get the pork xiao long bao and the beef rolls. The soup dumplings were okay, I thought the soup inside was pretty bland and for the amount I paid you only get five pieces. Honestly, I'd rather make the drive to Din Tai Fung for better dumplings and I think even Trader Joe's have better xiao long bao for less! Came to Dan Modern Chines on a Friday night during prime time so we expected a wait. Kelli, our hostess was kind enough to update us and retrieve us as soon as our table was ready. The wait might have been 20 minutes, but it was well worth the wait. Brian our server was very attentive and had a great handle on the entire menu. We went with some of his suggestions and loved everything. His excellent service and professionalism made it for a very lovely experience. We started with "Small Plates" Beef Roll - excellent flavor, something I will need to order every visit. I love the hot and sweet sauces that were served on the side. Scallion pancake - very good, lots of flavor. The "Soup Dumplings" were the reason for our visit. They were absolutely wonderful! We tried the Pork & Crab, and the Pork & Shrimp. Brian explained to me the best way to use the vinegar and ginger side sauces. Since it was our first visit, we opted to try the "Noodles" Short Ribs was the one recommended by Brian. They were wonderful. The potions are perfect for sharing. The food comes out as it is ready and piping hot. The flavors are spot on. The service was excellent. Definitely a place I look forward to coming back. They also have a wine and beer list to choose from. I think t's a great place for groups. A good option for Chinese food in the LB area! My friend and I were craving xiao long bao, and this place popped up. We came to the 2nd and PCH shopping area on a Sunday evening, and there were only a few tables dining in. We were seated right away, and our server was friendly and attentive. I am very biased toward shrimp lol, and these xlb were very tasty and well-cooked. The wrapper was very thin and not too doughy, which I enjoyed. These xlb were also larger than the ones you get at Din Tai Fung, and the soup inside was tasty. My main issue is that the xlb lost their heat pretty quickly, and didn't come out piping hot. Also, these can get pricey if you order a lot since one order is only 5 pieces. However, flavor and texture were great! Pork & crab xlb: 7/10 also pretty good, but I felt that the flavor of these was a bit muted. I would've liked a more flavorful and savory broth and filling. Wrapper was still very nice though! Garlic snow pea leaves: 9/10 delicious! It might be the fact that my friend and I both needed to eat more veggies lol, but these were sooo good. They were cooked perfectly, not mushy and not too firm. The veggies tasted very fresh and garlicky, and the seasoning was simple and well-balanced. Would get this again! The dumplings didn't have that melt in your mouth experience, the green beans weren't as fresh and cooked to perfection like they are at Din Tai Fung. Ordered the "large" beef and vegetables for $20, it had great flavor but overall, but was like an appetizer portion for one person with very little beef and lots of peppers and onions. The rice was in a mini bowl too. We told the waiter we were disappointed in the portion size, and he said he would pass the message on. I think he's heard it before. When we first got there it was pretty and small inside but there was no one to direct us to a seat, and no sign suggesting we seat ourselves. although a waiter helped us out quickly, his service was spotty considering many people weren't there. not bad, just was either there or no where to be seen which is fair. i really liked the food we had spicy pork dumplings, chicken soup dumplings and the beef noodles. i wish the beef were a bit more tender since the meat was chewy, but the flavor was sooo good. The broth in the dumplings were hot and comforting, I wish the filling had a little more flavor but I enjoyed them. I don't think the soup dumplings are terrible priced either, I felt full after two servings which was about 16 bucks or so. The noodles were a bit pricey though, 21 bucks for a bowl. Had been to the LA location so finally came to this one. Love that while the menu is small there's still a lot of vegetarian options. We came in a group of 7 and got the scallion pancakes, vegetarian dumplings, fried rice, Dan mein, garlic green beans and mapo tofu. Everything was delicious but i think the Dan mein was my favorite. My friends and I came here for the first time and were immediately greeted by the staff. Originally I didn't know what to expect, but once the food came out, I can easily say that I didn't take any pictures because the food was so good we forgot to take pictures. When we were seated, our server, Tai, began explaining the menu and telling us about the restaurant itself. We had a lot of questions, but he patiently answered all our questions and recommended his favorites. So compliments to the server for starting our experience off with a bang! We started off with pickled cucumbers, kind of spicy and not my favorite, but my friends loved it. We had two orders (one to take home). We got multiple soup dumplings (pork, pork & crab, and chicken). Some places we've been to the soup dumplings were dry, but at this restaurant, there was a perfect balance of soup and meat. Even the dumpling skin was soft. We also got some stir-fry noodles, mapo tofu, a sautéed spinach and bok choy, and so many more I can't remember. My favorite dish was the chicken fried rice. When I say it was extremely flavorful, it was. We obviously had to get seconds to take home. Throughout our entire experience, our server came to check on us frequently and made sure we had everything we needed. I'm a needy person. I asked him for so many items (extra ginger, extra chili oil, extra this and that). He was very helpful all the way! I would 100% recommend this place and I will be back no doubt. We ordered delivery and was very disappointed in both dishes. The 3-cup chicken was way too salty and the chicken in it was very dry. We could not eat more than a few bites. The mushrooms and greens in the Dan Chicken noodles were inedible -- not cooked through so we couldn't chew through them. The noodles themselves were good and the chicken in this dish was not as dry as the other one. It's a shame because we have enjoyed eating there previously.
