Came here with a group of 6 Saturday night without reservations. The waiter very kindly asked a couple who had just sat down to move over one table to accommodate us and I thought that was really nice (obviously not expected). I feel like you can't go wrong with Thai in the area but I thought the food here was incredible and authentic and compared to Pure Thai. Started with vegetable dumplings and summer rolls. The dumplings were great. For a main I had the eggplant tofu special dish - it was so good! Saucy, spicy, great flavours and textures. Der Krung is one of the many hole in a wall spots lined up along Ninth Avenue that's almost easy to miss but fortunately it caught my eye. I've eaten here in a couple of occasions but have ordered in several times because like most New Yorkers, I don't use my kitchen (that much) and rely (most of the time..) on take out. My favorite dish there is the Eggplant Tofu with Spicy Garlic Sauce with added grilled chicken. They give an option of white or brown rice but watch out, because brown rice costs extra. If you're thinking of saving those couple of extra dollars I would actually suggest spending it on their lychee juice. The LJ is completely fresh and comes with a large, juicy lychee so delicious it could possibly count as dessert. On the two occasions I've come here to eat, I loved their steamed chicken dumplings because they hit the spot but they're quite small. A friends ordered a simple sesame chicken dish to keep it healthy but then next time we visited we ordered spring rolls and the massaman curry (the least spicy - promise!). The way the potatoes, peanuts and onions mixed with the coconut milk was truly delicious. My family and I have been coming to this restaurant for the past 4 years since we've lived in this area, and it is truly the best Thai food! 4 stars for food 2.5 for service First time here for dinner. Went to the standard pad Thai with shrimp and green curry with chicken. Both were very good and plentiful. The pad Thai with shrimp came in a very large portion, large shrimp and overall tangy the way good Thai should be. The green curry had just the right amount of heat without going overboard. A few things we weren't happy with: very dis-interested service, more attention was being paid to the 5-6 delivery guys that came in and out than the dine-in customers, up-charge for brown rice was $3.50(??!!) and there are no dessert options. Not sure why a lot of reviewers called this place a hole in the wall. Though it is a small restaurant (like many places in NYC, it's clean and nothing is falling apart in here). The cement walls and wood flooring are just urban casual. It doesn't make this place more or less authentic? Anyway, I got my usual pad see ew and it was just like I expected it to taste - crunchy Chinese broccoli, flat noodles, sweet soy and oyster sauce plus scrambled egg. Glad to have found this place so close to my work place. Very easy to miss this spot if you're walking by. read more

Typical Thai restaurant for NYC: narrow space, 10 small and somewhat cramped tables, dark walls, and gorgeous and intricate lighting. Still, I'd consider this a gem for the food, service, AND music. You've got your typical Thai fare plus a few nice specials. Stepping out of my Pineapple Fried Rice comfort zone, I went with the braised pork belly with Chinese broocoli, and that was a wise decision on my end. The pork belly was tender and the greens were bright and a good food to counter the richness of the meat. The Thai Iced Tea was shaded a rich orange and was hedonistically creamy. Adam partook in the Pad Thai, and I thought it was pretty tasty, though he says he's had better. (But! He still enjoyed it thoroughly.) The service was great and our waitress was a sweetheart. They were playing some good 90s pop tunes courtesy of Pandora overhead. After jamming away to "I'll Make Love To You" by Boyz II Men and "Nobody Knows" by The Tony Rich Project, recounting to Adam the many awkward and sweary slow dances I had to those songs whilst in middle school (...ahhh, the late 90s...), our waitress came up to our table. "I noticed you've been enjoying the music we've been playing," she remarked gingerly. "I made sure the staff didn't change the music around, just for you." Ha! WIN. :-) There is definite Thai Saturation in this relatively tiny Isle of Manhattan. Hell's Kitchen I do refer to as "Little Thailand" on occasion. It's certainly all around! First off, food was mediocre. The service was horrible from the management. I have a friend visiting from Spain who is vegetarian. They bring out the most fishy vegetarian pad Thai I have ever tasted. When we sent it back the woman in charge not sure if she is the owner lectures me on how she is training her waiters and he has to pay for it because the restaurant isn't paying for his error. She continues to tell me that I need to ask precisely every ingredient when I order vegetarian. Then the boy was so brainwashed thinking everything was his fault. You are not in Asia any more. Excellent Thai food. We stumbled into this dark yet trendy little gem and we were greeted by some very friendly faces. The summer roll was sublime. I wish they would have served the peanut sauce and Sweet Chili sauce on the side. It was drizzled into a mixture on the plate. The crispy calamari was just crisp to perfection, but I had wished the portion size was a tad more. My green shrimp curry was excellent. I asked for very very spicy..and they chef didn't hold back! Too saucy! Not in a good way. Their papaya salad was drenched in their sour fish sauce, and less than half way along, my taste buds died a little from the salt. Okay, so maybe it was just the appetizer, right? NO. The noodle dishes were also waaaay salty and dare I say, TOO "flavorful." We ordered the Pad see ew & drunken noodles. I went here with a friend to grab a bite to eat for dinner on a weeknight. It was around 8:30pm when we arrived, but we were able to be seated right away at one of the few remaining tables. I ended up ordering a thai iced tea which was very tasty and a good size as well. For our meal, we split an order of the green curry, pad thai, and garlic chicken. The garlic chicken and green curry were decent, with the curry being the best of the lot. However, the pad thai just did not do it for me. Something about the way the sauce was on the noodles or how it was cooked did not work. Overall, the service here was friendly and the food here was decent, but not really as high quality as I was hoping for. I don't understand why this place is usually empty when I walk by, it should be full at all times. Der Krung is my go to for Seamless orders. They always deliver within 30 minutes (much faster than what Seamless predicts) and the food is always on point. My go to menu items are the Pad See Ew with Beef and Thai Iced Tea. My friend and I were visiting New York City and decided we were in the mood for Thai food. We came across this little restaurant on 9th Avenue and it looked nice and clean. So, we decided to try it. Oh boy, finding this place is dangerous for me. I love Thai food and can eat it probably every other day. My co-workers found this place and introduced it to me and it doesn't help that it's so close to my office. This place would be considered "a hole in the wall" because it's such a tiny space with only 10 or less seating but you are ecstatic you stopped in because the service/food is just superb. I have tried their pad thai with tofu which was good - I have bad better pad thai before so this wasn't my favorite but their pad see yew was AMAZING. Just writing this review is making my mouth water. Their lunch specials are also so affordable and cheap - the meal comes with soup or salad and it's a pretty decent size portion. It's dangerous because there's been times when I would order take out 3 times a week. The waitstaff are sweet and fast and service is just the same. I want to try everything on the menu because I just know I won't be disappointed but I keep going back to the pad see yew because it's that good! read more

I was so happy to see that they were open during the pandemic since most of the many Thai restaurants on 9th Ave are closed. I ordered the Calamari See-Eew and it was delicious! I also appreciated the fact that the employee stood by the door wearing a mask to take my order and brought it there when it was ready. This place is always busy, but the service is always great. A colleague and I were in New York for a business trip and used Yelp to locate a Thai place by our hotel. A few suggestions came up - the "top ranked" restaurant had great reviews but said there were long waits. So we gave Der Krung a try. To say the least, it was great. While it is a small place, we were seated right away and served immediately. Service was good and we soon had our appetizers - the spring rolls. Delicious. We ordered Thai Iced Tea (very good) and had Panang Curry with steak and Green Curry with calamari. Both were perfect portions and tasted great. Really good chive cakes. A new early bird special menu that lets you have an appetizer, a main, and a soft drink for $12. And, of course, a glorious happy hour that lasts forever (4:00-9.00 p.m.), when Singha and house wine are just $3. Hell's Kitchen has tons of good cheap dinner options, but not in this weird area on the border with UES and near Lincoln Center. If you find yourself there, give this little place a try. read more

Came here for a late lunch and it was fantastic! Had the Penang curry with pork, the chicken larb, a papaya salad, and a shrimp Tom kha soup. It was a lot of food and had leftovers! The Penang curry sauce is like crack and would make anything taste good. The chicken larb was missing some acid so we ended up mixing it with the curry. The papaya salad was solid and the coconut soup was spot on. Everyone was friendly and they were attentive without being overbearing. Hidden Gem! Went with 2 friends and everything we ordered was amazing. Started with Vegetarian Spring Rolls, Chicken Satay, and their special steamed Der Krung chicken and shrimp Dumplings all excellent. For main course we had their delicious shrimp Pad Thai, the Duck Tamarind and Pork Belly w/Chinese Broccoli - there was not a crumb left we devoured it all and loved every bite. Based on those items, I would have rated this establishment 4 stars; however, the pad see ew was just so dry and flavorless, that I was a bit disappointed. came here for dinner on saturday night. this place is pretty small with seating for maybe 20-25 people, so was happy to score a table in the back. my friend and i shared vegetarian spring rolls, red curry with chicken, kua kai noodles with beef and a bottle of cab. everything was very hot, fresh and tasty. the curry had the perfect amount of mild heat and the noodles were sauced just right. service was very attentive and did a great job keeping our wine and water glasses full. the menu here has a solid variety, so definitely want to come back and try some other things. the pork belly with chinese broccoli really caught my eye! read more
