It's been at least 4 or 5 years since my initial review of this place. In that review, I estimated this place wouldn't survive after COVID. Instead, the place survived but its original ownership did not as I've see many signs outside the restaurant advertising "NEW OWNERSHIP". We live close by, so today my husband and I decided to give it another try. It was an absolutely gorgeous day so we walked downtown and thought this would be a good place to try again on a day like this because of their outdoor patio. Man, were we wrong. It was about 1PM on a beautiful, sunny Saturday. We waited at least 5 minutes at the hostess stand. No hostess. Place was not full, but there were two large tables outside. Finally a server came by with her hands full with plates of food. Exasperated, she said to my husband, "How many?" Not "hello", "how are you", "sorry for the wait", "I'll be with you in just one second, let me drop these plates off"--just "how many?" My husband said, "two adults and our baby." She said, "well, you're going to have to wait. We only have two servers on right now. We're short staffed and there's two large tables that I'm waiting on." My husband was like, "Can we just sit at one of the tables that are open here on the patio?" Aggressively, she said, "I just told you, you'll have to wait." We looked at each other in shock and couldn't believe her response. We immediately left and agreed we will NEVER return. New ownership or not--this place is terrible. Please explain to me why you only have two servers working an entire restaurant on a Saturday afternoon in downtown Murrieta? You're short staffed? Okay...then please explain to me why, when I look at your website under job opportunities, you don't have an opening for a server or a hostess??? Only a bartender and line cook! No one available to seat us. The place was empty at noon on a Friday. Walked around inside and then back to the patio when our hostess arrived. She ended up being our waitress. The menu is the same as before. Wife ordered fish tacos and I ordered the Wings. Waitress came back and said tacos would be over 30 min wait because they were thawing. Ok shrimp tacos. We don't have that. Ok Barbacoa Bowl. And the house fries. The waitress forgot what I ordered so I reminded her it was the Special "Wingin It" Wingin' it advertises a wing variety. What I got was cheap party wings from Winco covered in a mediocre buffalo sauce, and ranch that was just mayo and milk. $16 Barbacoa Bowl was as plain as can be. Soggy white rice, some pickled onions and unimpressive beef. $23 Best part was the house fries which has always been their best menu item. Except now the portions are smaller and at 12.50 not worth it. After a beer and a cocktail plus tip we end up payi g $100 for a less than mediocre experience. Never again. Sorry. read more

I stumbled across this place by accident; while running errands I was going to stop by The Press Espresso which is in the same little plaza but I saw people walking in and out of this building. I walked in and it was kind of weird just cause I wasn't sure whether or not I was supposed to seat myself as there was no one by the door so I kind of wandered in and someone saw me. She sat me at a table with the menu. Both ladies I interacted with were very polite. It's a somewhat small restaurant with outdoor and indoor seating but even with the busy restaurant I didn't feel too crowded by the two neighboring tables which was very nice. The food was delicious, but I asked for my egg to be medium and they served it to me more hard. Not a big deal to me but I know not everyone would feel the same. Great evening to sit outside. The Down Town PUBlic house has a awsome patio with miniature fire pits on top of the permanent tables. The funky part; you do the typical what we've become accustomed to Covid bar code scan thats glued to the table to see the menu. Once you've reviewed the menu, you order from the app (The Toast TakeOut). At this point, you order everything including your drinks. Unfortunately, you need to pre-plan how many you think you'll drink; 2 maybe 3. Once done, you close out your tab. Not really digging this app. The food was good. I had the Memphis pulled pork and my friend had the Blackened chicken. I'd probably kick this up to 4 stars if they got rid of this app and did what most businesses are doing. This place is under new ownership and so far I'm liking what I'm seeing. Rookie reviewer move, I failed to take pictures of the food my party ordered, but it was so delicious and memorable I can still list and describe it. Appetizers: Mac and cheese with panko crust on top - so creamy Roasted brussel sprouts with Parmesan cheese and bacon - need I say more Hummus plate HAVE to ask for the incredible sourdough bread. You'll thank me. Entrees: Kobe Burger - huge and cooked to perfection Chicken not pie - a beautifully deconstructed chicken pot pie dish. Barbacoa Bowl - can't go wrong with barbacoa brisket and pickled red onions This Chicken is the Real Dill - massive healthy grilled chicken breast on a mashed potato bed. The sauce on the top ties it all together. Only disappointment, we were there right when it opened with no other large parties. I had to get serving spoons and utensils for my group to enjoy our appetizers when they arrived. Server was attentive to our to drinks which I appreciate. I love the coffee shop next door, Press Espresso, and haven't frequented the restaurants around. However my sister was adamant about trying the Korean BBQ style sandwich/burger however their menu must be constantly changing as it wasn't available when we went. No matter, we opted for the potatoes, spicy pasta, and the roasted cauliflower. The pasta was the best item as it had a ton of sauce and a grilled lemon and let's face it - pasta is pretty hard to mess up. The potatoes were a little bland for me and I wish there was more salt or flavoring. It was just potato wedges that had herb on it but really no flavor. We were given their house made ketchup which tasted more like a BBQ sauce. The fan-least-favorite was none other than this roasted cauliflower with a curry sauce. It tasted like a raw vegetable smothered in this overpowering sauce. A few of the bites were good but I'd rather not eat a plain cauliflower that felt very undercooked. I don't know if I misread the description but I'm pretty sure I was expecting it to be cooked. The service was nice as in, you log in your phone, order, pay, and then wait. I do like that you can pay in advance and they were being flexible with Covid restrictions which I feel the whole area of Temecula/Murrieta has disregarded. I didn't like that you have to tip. I marked it as 0.01 and tipped in cash. Overall, I'll come back after I find something I like on their seasonal menu but I would steer clear of the ambitious roasted veggies. Went here for a celebratory dinner with my Comadre. When we arrived, we checked in at the front patio and let the Hostess know that we'd order drinks at the bar and would seat ourselves inside toward the back where the restaurant has a few additional seating while we waited for a table to come open. Wait time we were told was 20 minutes. We'd witness other customers coming in through the back of the restaurant and had been waiting for approx 40 minutes. When I went to check to see if we were any closer to being seated, I saw the hostess seating one of the customers who had come in almost 15 minutes after us while we were still waiting to be seated. Needless to say, we weren't happy with that. I brought it to the hostess's attention, who immediately went to the manager. Long story short the hostess wasn't truthful about having a conversation with us. I even told the manager we let the hostess and an additional staff member know where we'd be waiting. It's a good thing they have a bar because we were able to sip on our drinks during the long wait. The euro fries were good. I ordered the chicken is the real dill. It's just ok. Even the sparkling wine I ordered was flat. The menu is limited and kind of pricey. All in all, the place is just ok. I believe the traffic is due to location and the outside patio with the fireplace is nice. Service and food left much to be desired. I won't say I'll never be back because the manager did her best to accommodate us after we brought our issues to her attention. I hope my next visit will be better. read more

I love this place and only because of my favorite bartender in all of Murrieta and not just this restaurant (Sarah). She is so friendly, professional and really makes sure her customers are happy the entire time they are here. Anyone who says she does the opposite is ridiculously confused. My wife Carolyn and I come here specifically because we love her to death and we love the service and personality (Sarah) has had from day 1 and has never changed it no matter what. If she did change, I'm sure we would stop coming. WE LOVE HER AND SHE IS YOUR BEST BARTENDER, HANDS DOWN. I would love to speak with any of the managers and owners if you want to hear more. Had the cilantro Cesar salad and the humus plate as an app. The salad is definitely shareable added chicken and avocado making it $28 for the salad. The salad was good but not worth the price. The customer service is worth coming because the staff is very friendly. The place is clean and has an outdoor seating available for the bar and dining. No fish options for the salad because they were out of salmon. The hummus was ok however the bread that accompanies the hummus plate is delicious. The bread is baked in house and available to purchase a loaf for $15. Would recommend this place. read more

If this is who the new owners are using to represent themselves when they're not there, good luck. She is clearly not financially invested in your success. This was our wedding anniversary dinner and she ruined it. We went to Don Ponchos instead. We won't be back and I suggest others that are considering giving Downtown Public a second chance, don't waste you time or money. As the owner requested I'm calling: I've now called to speak with the owner for a week and left numerous messages with my phone number to return my call. He doesn't seem to be there often or I've "just missed him". I've called around 11am to noon every day hoping to catch him there to no avail. Since changing ownership, in the last several months I have noticed some changes. Mostly with staff. Our favorite bartenders are no longer there and the new ones are not as attentive or professional. This also applies to the staff as well. In my last review I said the service was excellent now it is good but noticeably different. As we left I noticed the 4 servers in the doorway of the kitchen all on their phones. I don't think I would have ever seen that before! The food is still great!! This is a great venue and I hope with time the staff will become as invested in the service as the owners and clientele! Still a beautiful place to dine though! read more

I came for lunch with the family. Food is so delish and the serving is large. We got to share and taste quite a few on the menu. Staff is friendly and very accommodating. Loved their outdoor vibe as California generally have beautiful weather so it's always nice to eat or enjoy your coffee out on the patio. Call me crazy, but these are a few of my favorite things... creamiest and most flavorful hummus served with perfectly toasted 48 hour sour dough bread. FYI, "48 hour" just means you'll be dreaming of it for at least 2 days straight. Beware of that little black iron skillet with the garlic addiction tomatoes. I kid you not! Couldn't stop without using a spoon to scrape out the last of that reduction. Somebody kiss the chef! I came here with family during lunch. The location alone is such a great spot to have this resturant especially in a Historic location. We enjoyed the seating and the ambience. The food alone is delicious and we enjoyed all of the plates we ordered. I love how fresh the food tasted and their ice tea tasted so fresh. We even took tea to go. I will definitely come back because they do change their menu items frequently and I'm excited to try the different dishes they offer. We were going to eat across the street, but they ended up being closed for the Labor Day Weekend. So we tried this spot out. It was very inviting and it was so nice out, we decided to sit outside. The service was quick and we were extremely pleased with how the food looked! It tasted even better!! The Steak was amazing, better than most of the "steakhouses" around the area. You know it's a good steak when you don't need any seasoning or sauce. My wife got a chicken sandwich and it came with fries which were amazing as well. Crispy outside, fluffy inside. And there was a homemade ranch dip that tasted so good with the fresh dill. Really happy the other place was closed! We definitely found our new spot. Give this place a try! It's worth it. read more

The service is horrible. The food is okay. You have to order, pay, and tip before even seeing your server. You have many people stop by and ask how you're doing, but when it comes to getting what you ask for (water, napkins, ranch, another drink, etc.) that takes FOREVER. And it seems like you have many greeters but not an actual server, more like greeting food runners. And they don't communicate with each other either. The Kobe burger was good, although the bun was ridiculously big. The cauliflower appetizer was very good. But the food wasn't enough to want to come back. Fish tacos had to much sauce. French fries were good. But ketchup was way too sweet and the ranch tasted like watered down blue cheese. Very disappointed Birthday dinner. Their new ordering process is to order and pay before your order goes in. If you'd like to add a tip, you also have to do this before you're served. If you want to tip after you've been served, as per any normal establishment, you can either leave cash or you don't tip. Once you send your order in, it's closed. So ass backwards. When I explained this to the manager, he missed the point (twice) saying tipping was optional (no sh!t). I had to explain that tipping is a reward for good food and service, not an entitlement. He said "that's the way we're set up". Good to know, what used to be one of my favorite establishments (both the one in Temecula and Murrieta) has now lost my business.
