We intended on purchasing a few pastries to try this place for our first time- asked the little girl behind the counter sitting at the register if a pastry was filled with blueberries- she looks up from her phone, doesn't ask what it was or get out of her chair, but just says 'I don't know'. She then goes back to tapping on her cell phone. We put everything back on the shelf and walked out. Where do I begin!!!! I stopped in Irvine to put gas... ended up at Tapioca Express... they had a display of this bread and I tried their walnut cranberry. I came back for more! Was craving some dessert so I decided to check out Duke Bakery since it's nearby. Tiramisu (4/5): I love tiramisu and this was pretty good, wish there was a little bit more espresso flavor. Coffee Roll Cake (2/5): I think I was given an older cake because the middle cream was hard, outside cake was good though. Red Bean & Green Tea Roll Cake (4/5): If you want something that's not too sweet this is a good choice, think it could be better if there was some vanilla cream inside as well. I use to love this bakery and still do but I can tell they are cutting corners with their quality. My favorite double cheese Hokkaido Bread use to ooze with yummy cheese. What a great find! This is a small bakery tucked in the middle of a large shopping mall. There is always a wide array of samples to try their different kinds of bread. Today I tried a chocolate Oreo one that was so amazing, almost life-changing. I thought I loved bread already but this one just takes it to a whole other level. We have bought the egg tarts, dirty cake, caramel cheese tart, ham and egg sandwich, and cheesecake. Aside from the sandwich, which I tend to judge more harshly because it's a type of sandwich I've grown up on, every other single thing is perfection. The egg tarts are the perfect balance of creamy and sweet without being overpowering and tiring. The caramel cheese tart is indulgent but the perfect size so that you're not overloaded with sugar. The dirty cake is just chocolate heaven, and honestly a little unexpected thanks to the layer of actual chocolate that adds some crunch. I've never been the biggest fan of American cheese cake, it's just way too sweet you can't really eat more than a few bites. But Asian cheesecake is the money. The consistency and the texture is just far more superior. Duke bakery does it justice. The cashier is really nice every time. She has really steered us in the right direction with her recommendations. I highly recommend picking up more than a few things if you're ever in the area! read more

This review is solely for the cashier working on Monday 10/21/2024 around 12:30pm. I'm surprised this place still got 4.3 stars rating despite all the bad reviews recently. My gf and I came here Monday noon during our lunch time. We spent about 5 mins before checking out and the whole time we were alone. This young lady working as cashier didn't come out from the back until we were ready to check out. By the look of her, she looked like just woke up from a nap, yawning and rubbing her eyes. No greetings nor smiling, not even looking at us and a single word. She was pointing at the credit card machine to told us to pay after ringing up our pastries! I'm not sure if she has social anxiety or just a bad day but give your customer a bad attitude is not okay under any circumstances. We will not come back here anymore, we would rather go to Sunmerry down the block which has much better customer service. read more

The lady who works behind the counter has a bad attitude, and was very rude. Never make eyes contact when talking in a curt and rude tone. The store was quite small, not a lot of varieties in bread. This tiny bakery makes some incredible bread. When you first walk in, grab a tray and tongs. There are several enclosed cases with different types of bread, each labeled with its ingredients, each having unique flavors. These are mostly small loafs of bread not intended for a single person but for several people to enjoy (or one person on multiple occasions). There were easily a couple dozen bread flavors to choose from. Pineapple? Caramel? Cheese? Blueberry? Coconut? So many choices! The nice fellow working there offered me a sample of taro bread which was fantastic but I opted for a loaf of chocolate-coffee bread. I also got a small loaf of sliced milk bread and three slices of strawberry cake to enjoy later with co-workers. The chocolate-coffee bread was soft and fresh while slightly chewy, with both the flavors of chocolate and coffee distinguishable. It had a slight sweetness to it but wasn't sweet like a pastry. Beware: it does give you "chocolate fingers". It's a great bread to enjoy with a glass of wine. The milk bread was superb - a basic white bread perfect for spreading some butter or jam on. The slices are larger than typical American white bread. To me it seemed slightly more dense than the bread I get at Japanese bakeries. The strawberry cake was good; it was delicious but the fruit filling just sort of tasted "fruity" to me and not necessarily strawberry (my co-workers disagree with that assessment). The cake and frosting was lightly sweet (or what I call "Asian Sweet"). The cake itself was light and moist. No tables - grab and go. The store had a steady stream of customers while I was there. I hope this unique bakery does great business because I'm now a loyal customer of their breads (I've subsequently tried their Hawaiian and Pineapple breads - both excellent!). read more

Interesting. Looks like a healthier version of Asian bread. I would go back to try other pastries. Four stars because: 1. Open at 9a- who goes to work after 9a? So no fresh bread for breakfast? 2. Close when sold out- got there at 6p and it was almost empty. 3. Friendly staff- Rachel is awesome. Best customer service. Hands down. She even helps this annoying lady who requested Rachel to write down all their cake options since they don't have a cake menu. 4. Great Asian bakery with a good selection of breads that aren't too sweet. I almost see this place as a more refined version of 85 degree bakery because it offers a combination of unique flavors. I never really had their full size breads because I come here for their small dessert options, such as cheesecake or cheese tart. The breads start around $3-4 and they have a lot a lot of samples. Even when I stopped by the store near closing time there was a decent amount of bread selection available as well as the samples. However, late in the evening (after 6 PM) you will most likely not have as much bread to choose from. The associate was very warm and friendly upon entering the bakery and the description of the breads make it easy to know what you are choosing. You can see the freshness of the ingredients and even the packaging for the breads looks so darn nice! I really enjoy the caramel cheese tart which is $3.75 with tax included. The tarts are on the smaller side and could probably be finished in less than 10 bites, but they pack a good amount of flavor. Overall, I would rate this place 4 stars because the price is a bit steep compared to other pastries/dessert places, but the consistent service, clean feeling/fresh baked goods, and quality always has me coming back for more! read more

Yuuuummy! It's a small spot but their cakes are delicious. I got a Mango Mousse cake for my friend's bday. The cashier provided friendly service, a "Happy Birthday" sign, and a candle. Their pastries are very delicious, but I have not gone back since I found a piece of metal in one of their taro buns on August 9, 2021 as shown here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/QUVERPWFfPqU73tS7 I brought it back to the store the next day, and they sent pictures of the problem along with my receipt to a manager. I was pleasantly surprised when someone called me right away and said they would investigate the issue with their supplier and get back to me. However, nobody ever reached back out to me. When I followed up 3 weeks later, they couldn't find my receipt and asked me to send it to them again, which tells me they likely forgot about the issue. When I asked what changes were made to their processes to prevent this from happening in the future, they were not able to be specific. They blamed the taro supplier and simply said a "cleaning step" was added. They also said they would refund the charge on my credit card, and that never happened! I found out that they don't make anything at the Irvine location. Everything is made centrally, so I will not be going back to any more Duke Bakeries! read more

Ordered the hot dog roll and the tuna bread. The hot dog roll tasted off and I think that's what gave me a stomach ache. If you're not into mustard, know that it's the first and last flavor you taste. The tuna bread barely had any tuna flavor, it was so light I had to check for specks of tuna just to make sure I bought the right thing. read more

This is a REAL Japanese bakery. Even down to the trays and tongs to choose your selection of breads and sweets. They are authentic and taste amazing. My absolute favorite is the egg tarte in the refrigerated section. Typical Japanese desserts; not too sweet, just perfectly delicious!!!! read more

I like this bakery more than 85C. It's a lot smaller, but the breads taste better to me. There are samples available to help yourself to and they really help sell the product, in my opinion. On this visit, it was a belated birthday trip. My Mom was kind enough to treat me for my birthday, in addition to giving me a gift. I got the garlic bread - so good and a great size (pretty large, in my opinion). This was big enough to share with my husband the next day. This would go well with spaghetti. I also got the chocolate cheese bread. I liked the subtle chocolate taste of the bread and the contrast of the cream cheese type of filling inside. That's the best way I know to describe the filling. We came here after lunch at Miyabi Shabu and there was no line. I would try this bakery if I were you. It's really good. In terms of the price, I'm not sure because my Mom treated me. awful service! I've been to Duke many times. one of their selling points is that you can try the bread before you buy, so you know you'll like it! Unless you have a b working there. We got there around 11 am, and only a few samples were out. We were waiting for specific samples to try, and the woman was behind the counter cutting additional samples. Then, she stopped and was just standing there watching us. Giving us a look. Even though she had many more samples cut, she left them behind the counter. I'm sure she thought that we were just going to try samples and not buy anything. We asked to try one specific sample, and she rolled her eyes and said ok in a terse manner. Well, we bought about $30 worth of bread. After she saw all that we were buying, she changed her attitude a little bit - too little too late That was extremely off-putting. I've also referred some friends there, but maybe I'll do so with a caveat now. Ive also been there many times before and they use Five stars. Yet, somehow, I only had points from today's purchase.... At first I ordered mango mousse cake but they don't have it so I ordered cheese cake instead. I told the lady on the phone "Grace" it's for a birthday she said she will save it for me! I drove half an hour to Irvine to picked it up. Surprised there are no strawberries as advertised, so I said can you please write happy birthday? Grace said we don't do it here! So your a bakery but can't decorate or frost happy birthday words? WTF! Grace offered 1 candle for the cake "are you kidding me?" At this point I am upset and Grace can see that I am upset she offered 10% discount, I told her I don't need the discount I can paid full (btw, they charged full price w/out the strawberries $45 cake). Grace told me I can go to 99 cents store to pick up candles. I want to expressed that Grace is nice person; however, you'd tell the customers up front that the cake is plain and FROZEN (I found that out when I brought the cake home and cut it) since it's frozen no-one can eat it. You just ruin someone bday due to lack of communication! I do t have to buy the cake but I drove 30 mins and it's late to find another bakery. Should have told me over phone up front! BTW! I am not saying the person is racist but I do know when I see customer service shift from good to idgaf depending on who is in the room. How come I was in there and no hello no welcome. I had questions and woman working there or owner ignored me and was very off but when a person of asian decent came in her tone was polite and helpful then another person came in and same thing she was polite.
