I've been coming here for over ten years. I love the family-style cooking here. It's like eating at a nisei or sansei's house. Authentic and with generous portions. Edokko II is my go-to place for ramen. We eat here about once a week. They have a huge variety of different types of ramen noodles for being such a small establishment. The ramen is really tasty and I personally prefer the noodles and the environment to Shoki's. In addition to wonderfully tasty ramen, they offer fried rice, various appetizer's (sesame chicken, fried tofu, rolls, tempura and sashimi). For entrees, they offer the standard bento boxes you'll find in most any Japanese restaurant. Their specialty is the Challenge ramen with various levels of spiciness, assorted vegetables and chicken. It's hard to get through the entire bowl because it is huge, and we wind up bring the leftovers home for a snack. The service is generally good. There are about 12 tables or so with usually only 2-3 servers so it can get busy. Usually there is no wait for a table, but the wait for your food is variable and can be anywhere from 20-40 minutes. Compared to its competitors, there is a lot more seating, they accept credit cards, and to me the spiciness makes the ramen base a lot more palatable. Overall, the dishes are very affordable ($7-$10) with friendly service. ***TIPS*** - Landpark (Sacramento) residents should look for their monthly booklet of coupons and you will find 4 coupons worth $1-$3 off your meal - Try the Challenge ramen with your desired level of spiciness but instead of chicken, substitute for pork. I think it adds a lot more flavor to the soup - If you are a sashimi fan, try the hamichi sashimi appetizer which is 5 thick pieces of yellowtail for about $7-$8. read more

Stopped In for a quick lunch. The sushi was very fresh and tasted good. If there was one thing that could be better, I think the time it took to get my food was far too long, given the fact that I was one of 2 customers in the place. that aside, i will come eat again, for sure. read more

Omg...don't come on a Friday night if you are hungry! It took 45 min before we got the soup... an hour before the sushi roll...another 15 min before the entree! I was already full from 3 glasses of water :/ The chicken was cooked well... not dry, but def not hot-was precooked. Then the left over ramen was given a regular container which leaked all over on the way home! Should have been a soup container. Poorly run. You really don't even need a "cook" ...just several people to assemble the dishes! We've seen it go down since it opened some 20+ yrs ago. :( I wish it was as good as the earlier days. Disappointed that we will not have an iconic neighborhood joint. The men's bathroom was unkept, broken towel dispenser. We were originally going to Zokku, but after checking the Yelps, didn't want to go there, even w/ a 15% off coupon. Yes, that's how much I depend on Yelp to guide me to a pleasant dining experience. Found Edokko w/ a fairly good ratings average, and it was near my friends' house. Though they had an extensive menu, I didn't see chirashi, so I decided to go the hot food route by ordering shio yaki saba and tempura. It was very good and filling. Only had takeout here a couple of times before. It was either inconsistent with the cold noodles, or the first time just tasted too damn delicious. The teriyaki beef was a bit too tough, but the cold noodles here are pretty bomb. 7/7/10 Buckwheat noodles, pretty bomb for something plain and simple. The rice triangles weren't as good as I expected them to be, but perhaps thats because I've never had it before. Situated in a strip mall in the Greenhaven/Pocket area, Edokko can be described as "no frills". This isn't necessarily a bad thing, the food was on the cheaper side and there was plenty of it. (rolls were in the 5-7 dollar range) The quality was exactly where I would like it to be, I got sushi. The pieces were small, the rice was very dry and the "spicy roll" just seemed to have some kind of crushed red pepper flakes on top. Dry on dry, texture wise, not my favorite. My friends and I tried the several roll, but no one seemed very impressed. They had very good green tea, and the place was busy, so I'm sure there more authentic dishes are great. This place is great. If you like Japanese noodle houses, this is a friendly, family oriented, not all fancied up, place to eat. You sit down, they give you a menu, you order. If you want Ultra Service, go pay higher prices. For 7 bucks you will be fed and well. I highly recommend the #70 stir fry with beef. My husbands' family are Edokko fans, at first I wasn't but I was willing to give them another try :) After watching Anthony Bordain in Japan I wanted ramen like how my dad makes it. Edokkos isnt my dads, but I was happy with my pork udon dish. The broth was very tasty, not the type of pork I was hoping for, the veggies were tasty and the noodles well cooked. This place is me and bf's favorite place to go. I heard that they make their own noodles. The ramen i believe is the best. My bf loves getting the edokko ramen which is fried shrimp and grilled chicken on top of ramen. He also gets double the noodle for only $2 more! I like the sansei ramen which is mountain herbs on top of ramen. One of the waitresses there suggested it for me and i love it. I have also tried two of the donburi dishes. My bf ordered the edokko donburi and it has the same stuff as the ramen, fried shrimp and grilled chicken, but they add an egg into and its the best donburi i have ever tasted. I have ordered their katsu-kare donburi which is pork katsu with curry over rice. It comes with carrots, potatoes, and some pickled veggie (not sure what it is but its red and sweet.) I have never had curry that is so good. Yum. I highly recommend this place. They are also very friendly. They actually recognize us now and know exactly what my bf wants (edokko ramen with double noodles.) She actually remembered the double noodles! I brought a few of my friends there and she was very helpful in suggesting different dishes that they might like depending on whether they liked spicy or meat or vegetarian. I wish I had gotten her name so you all know who im talking about but oh well. Talking about this place just makes me hungry. Mmmm. Oh. One bad thing about this place is that it takes about 20-30 minutes if they are not that busy for your food to come to the table, but it is worth it. This is no place to run in and eat and leave. The only thing is that, yes, the ambiance is lacking and the service is exceptionally slow on many nights. My girlfriend and I decided to broaden our ramen palates and went to Edokko. Officially I'd give it a 3.5 stars but just rounded up to give them the benefit of the doubt, despite the fact that they forgot our sushi order. It's understandable that things get busy and orders back up and sometimes lost in the shuffle. Anywho, the food is what's important so here it goes: I ordered the tan tan men and appreciated the miso base and the generous amounts of noodles and meat. Boy howdy do they give you a lot of ground pork and noodles. My only beef with the pork was that it was a little on the salty side. But if you want a hearty bowl of noodles and soup you will definitely get your fill. My girlfriend had the butter corn shio ramen, the broth is less salty and lets the flavors of the broth come out a little more. Will definitely try this place again and see if my opinion changes, but that's it for now. read more

My mum and I came here today for lunch. We had a dollar off $12 lunch purchase. She had the tempura lunch and I had the chicken katsu. Mum's tempura mix had two shrimp and lots of various vegetables. My plate had two layers of crisp chicken. They were both served with rice, miso and salad. The water tasted a little rubbery or chemically. The bathroom was also dingy, to put it nicely. Floor was chipped and the toilet didn't seem to be clean. The place quickly filled up with regulars who seemed to all know each other, though they all arrived at different times and took over different tables. Good portion size for a good price. So today I had a taste for some soup and since I was in the neighborhood of the Edokko Japanese restaurant, I thought I'd stop in for some udon. First of all the wait was 30 min which is fine, but after I received my soup asked the waiter if there were Utensils and she said yes. Well I get to my car and there were no utensils-- and the soup was boiling hot. So much so that it spilled on my leg and burned it. I still feel the burn. Food should never be serve at this temperature. It's extremely dangerous. When I went back to tell them the clerk laughed it off. I have always wanted to try this place, I went to high school down the street and always passed by it. My best friend and I decided to give the place a try after all the yelp reviews and we were not disappointed. It's a small place and the service isn't bad, but a little slow. The menu has some great selections and it was a little hard to decide what we wanted. But of course we tried the ramen combo they had. You get a small bowl of ramen, fried rice, a little salad and a side (gyoza, karaage, shui mai and etc) for about $11, a pretty good deal. The fried rice was pretty good and tasty, I hate going to restaurants where they used day old rice giving the fried rice a stale taste. But it was nice, soft and fluffy and great portions. The (miso) broth of the ramen was great, a little salty and gave the ramen great flavor. We also order calamari strips, they were wonderfully breaded and fried to a golden brown perfection. The food is definitely good! However... be prepared to wait for it. I have ordered from here twice now, and each time I come at the tail end of the time they give me, usually 15-20 minutes. Both times I've had to sit and wait for my food once I get there. I would love to blame it on being busy, but one time it was durning the lunch service, and it was empty. What are they doing in there? My most recent trip was for dinner on a Friday. Now, I figured they would be maybe a little busy, so again I waited. This time I timed 15 minutes exactly before I left my house, 5 minutes away. I was told over the phone it would take 12 minutes for my order. I arrive, and there are maybe 5 couples dining, and one waiting for food. I check with the waitress/cashier, and lo and behold, I have to wait. My husband and I waited maybe 8-10 minutes more for our food. Our ramen (wonton ramen and tempura ramen) was piping hot, and the natto maki (rolls) was rolled fine. However, another couple came with us to sit down, and were immediately served appetizers. What gives? Not sure if they prioritize sit downs, but if my food should have been cooked already, I should get it when you say it's ready. Omg after not coming to this place in years I decided to try it again and had the worse experience I've had in a while. It was a Tuesday night, I placed a take out order for a ramen dish and Hawaii sushi roll. It took over 45 minutes to get my order. Beef teriyaki tempura bento box please. I get mocked often from friends since that's the most common plate I order. I was introduced to this place by a good friend several years ago and since then I've kept returning. It's a small hole in the wall restaurant with limited seating during peak dinner hours but even then, I won't complain since the food is good with an affordable price. Some of the other good dishes include the Yaki Udon, and edokko don. If you're in for something spicy try the challenge ramen. I had a friend try the most spicy version of it and he ate the entire thing without drinking an ounce of water. Don't take that as the dish being not spicy at all, I believe he just doesn't have taste buds as my other friend and I took a small bite out of his bowl and we went through 2 glasses of water each and still burned up. This is where I go for udon. Clean and bright broth with excellent flavor. Tempura is sometimes a little heavy/oily but typically very good. The variety is nice. They go beyond the standard carrots, broccoli and green bean. Large pieces of sweet potato, winter mellon and lotus root are usually included. Their sushi is good. Rolls are a bit smaller than normal but that works for me because I like ordering several for a variety. read more

I've recently relocated to Pocket and have yet to find a decent place to eat. I found Edokko II on yelp and saw that most people enjoyed the food while the service not so much. I don't mind waiting if It's worth the wait. And I was pretty pissed off when my wife was 5 minutes late coming out to Edokko II putting on make-up. Anyways, here's a quick review based strictly on my preference. Food: 2/5 Salty, sweet, low quality ingredients Service: 3/5 slow but got things done Ambience: 3/5 nothing much to talk about. But it was very cold inside. My wife and I ordered a special ramen, a ramen and a donburi combo, and a roll. Special ramen was okay, although chicken had that smell (it only takes 1 step to get out if you know how to cook), combo ramen and donburi were both too salty, roll lacked the quality and proportionate ratio between ingredients. Overall, it was not a pleasant dinner, but price was very much affordable so we may comeback to try other things on the menu. read more

I always loved going to Edokko as a young kid for their warm udon soups after a cold day at swim practice. The soups (udon, ramen, yakisoba, etc) are the best dishes to get at this restaurant. The prices are reasonable ($10 for a large Champon ramen bowl) and you get a lot of food and good flavor. Food: - Japanese curry. I like Japanese style curry since it has a sweeter savory taste compared to other Asian curries. Good tasting sauce, tender chicken, sweet carrots and yummy potatoes. - Teriyaki Calamari special. I usually don't order food from a restaurant's "Specials" menu but this was surprisingly good. Grilled calamari strips were hot and tender with plenty of teriyaki sauce and rice to fill you up. There was a good amount of meat too. - Champon Ramen. This soup has beef, shrimp, and squid and plenty of cabbage, onions, and carrots. I had this before and although it was good this time, it was better the previous time I got it. Today's had a little too much cabbage and not enough noodles and broth for my liking. The flavor was still good though as I remembered it but the broth could've been creamier. Tips: - Be prepared to stay a while if you plan to eat here. It takes about 30-45 minutes to get your food, so it's perfect for when you're meeting someone you haven't seen in a while! However, the food is hot and fresh, making it worth the wait. Waiting doesn't matter to me since I feel meals should be eaten slowly and enjoyed with good company socializing to fill the wait times. - I wouldn't recommend the sushi at Edokko since I've had much better elsewhere but try their ramen or udon soups! Those always make regular diners happy. Overall: - I enjoy the small quaint atmosphere compared to the newer hip modern Japanese food spots. I just wish Edokko continued to play traditional Japanese music instead of radio songs, that's what makes them unique! - Convenient for Pocket-Greenhaven residents who don't want to drive far for good Japanese food. The wait for take out became unpredictable and exceedingly longer and longer and the food became very inconsistent; beef teriyaki over done one week and cold (raw) in the middle the next. Sauces would be too sweet one week and overly salty the next. To be fair, I haven't been in quite sometime so hopefully things have improved because the staff are really, really nice but that is5nt enough to make up for the long wait times and inconsistent dishes. read more
