I had just received a major bonus from my job and decided to treat myself and my manager to lunch yo celebrate. We were both talking about our foodie tendencies and I had mentioned being a fan of Peruvian food since a child; she had mentioned a Peruvian dish that I had yet to try Imand I began to have a craving for it. So, we searched Google and looked up some places in the area. We found El Pollo Imperial. They had great reviews and I quickly selected this spot. I placed an order from their lunch special, Saltato De Pollo and drove out there. Given that they don't have outdoor dining, their drive-thru is still in full effect. My manager was not lying when she said that they are generous with their portions, especially for the lunch special which was a great deal for the amount of food that they give. But, the flavor is on a whole different level. I went back the next day and ordered again. This time I included their fried Plantains (extra crispy) and they did not disappoint. I feel as though I'm being biased because this is my favorite dish without having tried anything else, but it's that good. I love El Pollo Imperial. My family picks up (drive through) food from this location every month or so and it's consistently good. I always get the saltado de mariscos (fish, squid, shrimp) and this last time it was FANTASTIC. Like a flavor explosion in my mouth. The chicken + rice soup (which comes with the lunch special) was also great. I highly recommend going during lunch and not dinner because the price jumps by ~$5. Tonight we came here to eat and didn't see our usual server this lady looked bothered to be here and brought our food and bread pretty quick. But we finished half of our food before our drinks arrived and never really had anyone check back in with us. When we asked for a Togo box we hadn't even finished eating and she began to take the plates away I had to grab my bread quickly before she took that as well. Then she told us the total bill and walked away finally we saw a lot more of her when she wanted payment because we were most definitely being rushed. I am updating my review after ordering through their drive thru. The reason for three stars is due to their inflated prices. Three saltado meals was $60! That's $20 a meal, and in my opinion, the food doesn't reflect the price. Secondly, my husband's saltado de pollo tasted like seafood. Freakin' awesome! It's been a while since I had good Peruvian food that I just forgot about it. Until today that is. I ended up at El Pollo Imperial with a coworker and I enjoyed one of the better lunches I've had in a few years. I'm not talking about ambiance or the company - I mean the food! Ordered the Saltado de Pollo for $6.90. Comes with a cup of soup. That was a great start to the meal. I should have asked what it was because I slurped up the soup like it was the last soup I was ever going to have. Bits of chicken for sure - I don't remember what else came with it because I was enjoying it too much. Plate comes out pretty quick. Mine came with a very generous bowl of rice, but on the platter. Veggies and chicken - lots of chicken too, not just all edible plants. My first bite - there was an explosion of flavor that didn't stop until I put my fork down and swallowed the last bite. The dish was that flavorful. The veggies weren't overdone and the rice - well, it's not sticky like I'm used to but it was good nonetheless. It's a smaller place - small parking lot unless you park on the street. Amazing prices for lunch. I don't know what the price points were for dinner. Dining area is clean and the staff was amazing. Finally a Peruvian place that lives up to its hype!!! I am happy to report that all these positive yelp reviews are accurate. This is hands down the best Peruvian food in LA and it definitely beats popular places like Marios, Don Feliz, El Pollo Inka and Mo-Chica. Complimentary stuff: rolls, huacatay sauce and soup. The rolls are pretty basic, small buttered rolls but the green huacatay sauce here is so addictive. A lot of Peruvian places either make it too cilantro-y or too watery but at El Pollo Imperial the huacatay sauce is the perfect combination of cream and cilantro. The green chicken soup here is really good too. They give you a small cup of chicken soup and even though the veggies they use in the soup are frozen and not fresh, the chicken is hand shredded and nicely flavored. It might be their leftover pollo a la brasa. Who know and who cares? Entrees: We ordered a Vainita Saltada (basically a lomo saltado with green beans), a chaufa de camaron (shrimp fried rice) and an order of aji de gallina. I order aji de gallina at every Peruvian place I go because it's my favorite dish, but here it was kind of bland and mushy. I didn't eat very much of it. Luckily the vainita saltada and chaufa were amazing. I was surprised by how many meat strips they give you and how tender the meat strips were. A lot of Peruvian places tend to give you mostly potatoes and onions. Their portions are gigantic. We split the other two entrees and still had enough leftovers for another meal. Ambiance and service: There isn't too much going on in terms of ambiance. This isn't a place with tablecloths or an impressive wine list, it's just a place for some authentic ethnic food. This place has been in my bookmarks FOREVER. But I finally found the time to try this place after the fiance and I were debating what to eat for lunch one afternoon. And boy were we so glad that we did. They have lunch specials during the week ($7-8, what a deal!), but this place get PACKED. Parking lot is small that people tend to park up on the curb next to the building. We were lucky and snagged the last spot in an actual stall and the last table. I ordered the chaufa de camaron and the fiance ordered the saltado de mariscos. We didn't share much because he cleaned his plate. LOL. I had to take half of mines home. Portions were very generous. Just out of curiosity we ordered the vainita saltada to-go for later. Instead of rice, we substituted beans. What's nice is that even with a to-go order they give you the soup and bread with your order. Nice. The dish itself was just so-so for me. I love this quaint little restaurant nestled in North LB! They offer a great selection of Peruvian dishes. Every meal comes with complementary little bread rolls that are soft, buttery and warm. They also give you this delicious green soup that has chicken and rice. Our favorites are that rotisserie chicken, lomo saltado and papa rellena. The rotisserie chicken is perfectly seasoned with peruvian flavors and spices. It is not too dry and moist. You can pick their delicious French fries which are crispy and fresh to go along with your chicken. The lomo saltado is also well seasoned and the beef is really tender and juicy. The papa rellena is a great appetizer to share. It is similar to a larger version of Porto's potato balls but the filling is actually way better as it contains juicy pieces of beef. The papa rellena is accompanied by a tangy onion slaw that balances out the savory flavors of the potato and beef. Since it is a small restaurant, service is quick and good. I came here last night on 7/30/20. I was tempted to see what the food like, so went on yelp. I automatically saw there was a recent post about there being a roach in the food, it was at that point, where I questioned getting any food here. I gave it a try since i figured, maybe they noticed that review and will try to be more cautious about their infestation problem. I ordered the lomo saltado. It looked good, and tasted good, maybe had more onion than meat... but other than that the taste was good. Long story short, I saw something, that made me spit my food out and made me gag. I saw a dead fly in the lomo saltado, and it was from there, that I decided to throw away all of it. How the hell does a dead fly even show up in there, when you're cooking? Is the food not covered or are you not cooking it fresh out? I had to keep looking for more bugs, and thankfully I didn't see more, but it's unacceptable to even have one in there. I love Peruvian food and this place gives me that at a reasonable price. Nothing fancy but good solid food. I eat here several times a month and I l typically get the whole chicken family meal with a side of plantains and seafood rice. The chicken is typically well seasoned and pairs well with the rice/beans/plantains. On occasion I will order and pick up and it seems as if I received chicken that was either overcooked or that had been reheated (and overcooked ) from the prior day. I removed a star for that reason and because within the past year or so often I can't locate anyway in the restaurant who speaks English. As a result sometimes my order has either been inaccurate or items go missing/excluded from the order. All of the employees are pleasant and I would like to get better in my Spanish at some point, but honestly there should at least be one person working in the restaurant at all times that speaks conversational English; at least enough for us to stumble threw the order. With that said, I'll be back because the food is good and the people work hard and are pleasant. read more

Been coming to El Pollo Imperial since a friend recommended it to me a few years back and is now one of my favorite spots in Long Beach. First of all the green sauce is like crack. I drizzle it on just about everything. The rolls and soup served with every meal are are very tasty appetizers. Ceviche is fresh, firm, crunchy, and limey. The yam adds an interesting texture as well. I usually get vainitas de pollo, chicken and green beans, which is keto friendly (substitute rice for side salad and you're even more healthy) but if you drench the rice in green sauce you're in heaven. People complain about the price, but they have great lunch deals and it's it's a huge serving that ends up being usually being two meals especially if you eat a couple rolls and the soup. Lots of left overs. Lunch time during the week can get crazy and you might have to wait in standing room only, and I have been late getting back to work because of this but I don't work at that place anymore so I don't care. Oh my lanta! I've found my Peruvian spot!! Been here a handful of times and it has been pretty consistent. Fair warning the place is pretty small with an even smaller parking lot, so you might have to wait a bit. It's a family restaurant so nothing too fancy. Great food, good service what more can you ask for? I almost always get the POLLO SALTADO which is delish. The right amount of chicken and fries ratio, they don't skimp on the meat like other places thank goodness! If I'm feeling dangerous I'll do the ARROZ CON MARISCOS which is kind of like a paella. It's full of flavor and loaded with seafood but it is a million calories so you're gonna have to hit the sit ups afterwards. All meals come with bread and a side of soup which are both tasty. I like to dip my bread in the soup cause I'm fancy like that lol. Their green sauce is like crack I put it on everything! Try it for yourself and tell me if you're tempted to slip a bottle in your purse like I am. They do except credit/debit cards so no need to stop by the ATM. Parking is a B word cause their lot holds about 5 cars or so and there is almost nerve street parking. I went with the Lomo Saltado being that there were so many positive reviews - I must admit, it was love at first bite! The dinner meal included a bowl of chicken and rice soup and 2 dinner rolls. The Lomo Saltado was super tasty - especially with the green salsa! The Lomo Saltado consist of red onions, fresh tomatoes, beef, and french fries - stir fried together, with a huge scoop of rice. This place is the real deal, you can tell they have been around for a while, the saltado had that seasoned pan burn flavor that I love!! Hot tip: Pair your meal with the Inca kola!
