I was very hesitant to try Fancy Wheat Field Bakery when they first opened probably over a year ago. But my mom was not, she tried it and told me it was good and that they even had Portuguese egg tarts, which I have not been able to find elsewhere in the city. The biggest difference between Portuguese egg tarts and normal egg tarts is that the Portuguese egg tart has a caramelized coating over the egg custard. It is sweeter and very delicious. Although they are smaller and more expensive than normal egg tarts, it is a nice change every so often. Their other pastries are also pretty good, not the best in the city but probably the best in the area. Amazing bread here. I always get the pineapple buns, and my boyfriend gets the one with the hot dogs. It's the best chinese bakery in SF, and pretty clean too. Cash only, most things are between $ 0.50 to $2 so you don't a lot. It's hard for me not to give FWF five stars... This place is becoming a regular morning stop on my way to work. I love to have my taste buds teased, and fancy a good mouth watering followed up by inspiring combinations of deliciousness. FWF does all that and more with the baked goods alone. Yesterday I tried the pineapple bun, today I indulged in a custard filled bun (with a few exciting raisins); this place is already claiming a spot in my "addicted to" tray. Parent used to be a regular at this bakery, they have this self service going on. Price is decent, good selection of Baos. However they always tend to run out fast, and they dont restock fast. I would either come out empty handed, or with something not fresh. I would definately come here for the cakes though. read more

Discovered this place when walking on San Bruno Ave. Their BBQ bun tasted alright . Their hot dog bun was just so-so . Their dinner roll tasted okay but it lacked flavor ... it was neither sweet or salty . Their lemon jelly bread tasted alright . The bread was not bad but the lemon jelly just tasted okay . I didn't expect them to use lemon jelly though ... I expected them to use lemon curd or something like that . It probably would've tasted better if they used lemon curd instead . Lastly , their milk bread was amazing ... it was ight , fluffy , and delicious . They have an nice , interesting selection of breads , buns , and pastries here . After reading all these great reviews about this bakery, I decided to check them out. Besides, I have a wedding coming up in May, so I was also checking out different bakeries and looking at their wedding cakes. I got to the store and was not greeted. But that's okay. I went to the counter and asked the lady that I wanted to look at their wedding cake pictures and samples. She then handed me a photo album. I flipped through it and saw only about 5-6 different styles of wedding cakes. Not too impressive, but of the pictures that they had, they looked really pretty. I then went to the lady (at the counter) and asked for more information. I asked for the price and she did not know how much so she went to the back and asked the "bakery chef". She then came back out with the price of $625. I then asked how much I needed to place the order in advance. She again said she didn't know, and then proceeded to head to the back again and asked the chef. She came back out with the answer one more time. So I asked her how much deposit I need to make and by when will I have to make the deposit by. She AGAIN said she didn't know and AGAIN proceeded to the back and asked again. She again came back out with the answer. HOW RUDE! First of all, it's fine that the front counter ladies KNEW NOTHING at all, but to run back and forth just wasn't very professional. And I bet the "bakery chef" who had all the answers (price, deposit, and other info, etc. ) is the BOSS, or at the very least, a manager of the bakery. If that's the case, why isn't my business good enough for him/her to come out and greet me? It wasn't very nice to have a customer stand around and have a counter lady (who knew nothing!) run back THREE TIMES to get some very very basic answers. I felt unappreciated so I picked up my order and left the store. I also order a chestnut birthday cake and it is not as good as the reviews rave. They were too sweet and the cake wasn't very spongy / soft at all. So if you want rude service and overpriced cake, by all means, this is the place for you. I used to hit this place up all the time.. until they were extremely rude to me. Haven't been back since. Their deserts are yummy, used to always take them back home for my family in the East Bay. If possible I would have give this place a negative star! People are extremely rude especially the cashier. I bought a slice of cake couple days ago and was gonna bring it home for my kid. The cake was collapsed on the plate cuz it's not firm enough. I asked the cashier for a to go box, she refused to give and was COMMANDING me to eat the cake right away in the store due to the cake was collapsed and she was unable to put it into a PAPER BAG. I wonder how could they put a slice of cake into a PAPER BAG if I would like to keep its original shape?!? And I stress VERY small... since most people bump into each other while trying to grab their pastries and etc. I blame my buddy Bobby for introducing me to this place and ever since... I ordered a birthday cake here for my little brother. During the time that I ordered, they were talking crap about me in Chinese thinking I didn't understand. Second of all when I brought the cake home they had spelled my brothers name wrong. My brothers name is Tyler not Tyer. Even worse is that I spelled out his name for them on a piece of paper. Last but not least the cake was dry. It was obvious they made this cake two or three days before I had to pick it up. It was not worth almost $40 for this cake. This small hole in the wall has a surprising selection of wonderful deliciousness that I have never seen anywhere else. But I was conservative in trying the new things in the two times I have been there. Of the four simple things I tried, the worm shape bread is the most memorable and comforting. It is just a bun filled with cream, which other places have and I normally would not get. But this thing is insanely good, with light cream in a cloud-fluffy bun and just the right amount of sweetness to let you to eat the whole thing without filling sick to your stomach. It almost melts in your mouth when eaten warm. And this thing has some sort of magical powers. On my first bite, I felt like I was somewhere else for a split second, and melted all my troubles away. Am I describing drugs? Well, I do recommend it to drug addicts who are trying to quit! :-) The second thing I tried was the green onion bun with dry pork crumble. Again, not entirely original unlike the other things I haven't tried. And I like this from other places too. But this thing has intense flavors, with no different layering whatsoever - everything just blows up in your mouth. Salty from the dry pork crumble and green onion, savory from the mayo/cream in the middle, and light sweet from the bun. Combining with the same super fluffiness as the worm shape bun, this almost took me on a trip again. I normally would not praise so highly of baked buns, but these are definitely some of the best things I ever ate. And I can't wait to go back to try the different things. read more

I'd give this 5 stars but I'll explain later. I'm in LOVE with all of the pastries they have in the front window. They're always fresh, chewy, and if you come at the right time, they're still hot! Very popular spot. The crust of their dan tat (egg tart) is almost like a short-bread, unless you get the "portuguese" style one, which is more often when I see at other Chinese bakeries (it's the flakey one with the browned top). I like the first one better obviously ^_^ The reason for not giving 5 stars: I didn't like any of the things I bought that were in the "pre-packaged" pastry section. Their honeycomb cakes were mediocre, the egg-yolk balls are also very average. And I'm afraid to try the beautifully decorated desserts at the front because the roll cakes and white cakes were really bad. TLDR: Get the stuff up front. It's fresher and always good. read more

To pop my yelp cherry, I decided to review Fancy Wheat Field Bakery. And I can't think of any other place to be my "first". Try their "hot dog buns". They are only 90 cents, and they have the perfect balance of fluffy, slightly sweet bread with a cute, tasty hot dog. My favorite is the pineapple bun, and at only 50 cents, it's possibly the best bargain in San Francisco. They have a wide selection of buns, and also, cakes/desserts at very cheap prices. And the ladies wear the most adorable aprons! If you aren't asian though, be prepared to be stared at the old asian guys that hang out in the limited seating inside the store. Oh, cash only, but at these prices, you could probably dig through your pockets and find enough to buy yourself something to eat. read more

Both Chinatown and San Bruno Ave locations have dirty carpets typical of Chinese owned places, the store on Stockton and Vallejo St in Chinatown has stinky run down bare red carpeting. I used to like getting coffee and hk milktea here but the smell is unacceptable. The goods aren't as good as when they first opened. read more

This place was conveniently open early (I believe 7am to 7pm). What I was interested in finding a cake for my boyfriend's birthday. I am not from the area, but finding the place was quite easy (the sign on the front of the store was fairly big). I found parking quite easily (however, granted I did go early in the morning). When I entered, the cakes were all located near the register in a chilled casing. There were other pastries available as well. I decided to go with a chocolate mouse cake (which ended up being about 20 something dollars). The lady at the register bundled the cake up nice and securely in a cute box. The box was tied in a cute pink bow (which made carrying the box to my car so convenient!) After opening the box I later found that included with the cake was a package full of small plastic forks, small plates, a cake cutter, and even candles!) I was so impressed with all the extra bonuses. The cake tasted great though, sweet and fluffy, and the fruits tasted so fresh! The presentation of the cake was unique and definitely picture worthy! The only downfall to this business would be that they ONLY ACCEPT CASH (so make sure to stop by the ATM before coming in) and the street parking. read more
