My parents used to love this place. They'd drag us down there every weekend for breakfast if they could. At Christmas my mom would bring boxes of Sees Candy for the employees that they got to know. My parents have since passed away. So randomly I stopped in today and was blown away with all the MAGA Christian Nationalism decor! First time back in years and I was surprised to see how much of the interior/exterior has been refitted with a ton of hybrid patriotic and evangelical christian decor. Even the front entrance has a mural of Jesus next to an American flag. At first I thought we were hearing Christian Rock radio over the soundsystem, but upon listening closer we realized it was a radio station for supporting families impacted by cancer. Everything else inside looks old and lived-in, like the budget to buy restaurant amenities like pepper shakers and seating upholstery was spent on a prayer cross-stitch instead and some flag decals instead. The service was quick & friendly and the food is the kind you look for in American diners. Lots of variety. Greek pita wraps, Mexican omelettes, southern-fried chicken & waffles. I have fond memories of crowding into this place with LBSU students after exams. Now it feels like this cafe has another purpose. I left feeling like there's probably someone battling cancer and the cafe has become a tribute to them. I hope my dollars support them in some way. We come here often and enjoy the junior burger basket special. I especially like the fries with extra seasoned salt. What they put on their fries isn't enough for my taste. Just my preference. In the evenings, there is an employee who I have asked kindly to give me extra season salt and he sprinkles a meager amount into a little dish. On our last visit, he denied me the extra salt. He said he put a little extra on my fries already and that the salt is very expensive. Really now? I am not sure if it's HIS policy or the restaurant's but this is bad business. Always passed by the spot when I exit on Studebaker and wondered if it was worth visiting. I can tell you that it most definitely was! The menu here is very large and they serve breakfast at any time of the day. I got myself a porckchop with some eggs. The whole plate was delicious and I knew it immediately when I first started eating. The service was great and the food came out fast. First thing you may notice is that there's no prices on their menu anymore, and honestly that's for good reason; you would likely shorten your menu options if you knew. I went in about an hour before closing to get food to go. I ordered a pastrami sandwich and a bean and cheese burrito. The staff were busy cleaning and preparing for closing. I ordered at the counter and my food was ready within five minutes. I ate the pastrami and it was delicious. Well constructed, good meat to bread ratio. There weren't big blobs of fat inside like a lot of other pastrami sandwiches I've had. It was lean and tasty. I saved the burrito for tomorrow. The staff were pleasant. On Mother's Day! What should have been a simple $2 kitchen error turned into one of the most hostile and unprofessional experiences my family has ever had at a local restaurant. Instead of just processing the simple refund, the employee decided to hurl personal insults at me in front of my daughter and mock me. Unbelievably, the situation peaked when this employee actually tried to provoke a physical altercation, stepping up and telling me, "Go ahead, let's go right now." Operating a local food and coffee business myself right here in Long Beach, I understand that ticket mistakes happen. What I cannot comprehend is employing volatile staff who actively try to fight customers over a two-dollar refund. I sent a formal email to management regarding this massive safety liability days ago and have received zero response, which shows a complete lack of accountability from the top down. I took my mother to this establishment recently for evening rations. I had a steak sandwich. I ordered the steak medium but it wasn't pink like I expected perhaps because the steak was thin. French Fries were good. I saw a sign that drink refills incurred a charge of something like 75 cents if my memory is correct. I have an expectation that drink refills should be free, especially when self serve is used. As a result I am dinging this establishment a point. This fantastic cafe is my favorite location, so I just had to come here for breakfast on the eve of my birthday! The Fantastic Cafe in Westminster is technically the closest Fantastic Cafe to me, but this location is worth the extra drive because their hash browns are perfectly seasoned! I used to like this place a lot more too because their portion sizes used to be larger than their competitors, especially when talking about their breakfast burritos, but the size of their breakfast burritos have shrunk, especially after they also raised their prices (not a good combination). Even with their recent food serving shrinkage, this place is still worth the extra drive because their food is perfectly seasoned so that it's a bit spicy. Because I usually drive out to this location, I usually call ahead of time and place my order over the phone. On this visit, I did that again and the lady over the phone who took my order, repeated my order back to me to verify that she got it correct (always appreciated when at least one of the orders is modified) and said it would be ready in ten minutes. When I got here, I paid for my order and my food was promptly ready after that- that's my kind of service, on time as estimated and tasty food! This place has a very large menu with lots of options and I can say that everything I've ordered (over the years, it's been about 15 different things), have all been perfectly seasoned and tasty. The inside of the restaurant is pretty large with multiple booths and tables so that large groups, family's and individuals can all be accommodated. There's also some cement picnic tables out in front of the restaurant where you could also enjoy your meal. If you're looking for delicious American food in the LBC by studebaker, look no further.
